More Brilliant Recordings Rescued From The Vaults.......2004-01-23

Well the Universal Music Group made good on its promise to release Volume 2 of pianist Clifford Curzon's rare Decca Recordings (from 1941-1972) as part of its second batch of limited edition boxed sets in the "Original Masters" series. While I am delighted that Volume 2 has been made available, unfortunately it is a bit of let down after Volume 1. My reasons are many, but mostly have to do with the fact that the majority of performances are of solo and chamber works, and that the set only contains four concerto recordings, all in mono, compared with seven on Volume 1. Curzon recorded Mozart's 23rd and 24th Concertos with Josef Krips in 1953, but then re-recorded them in stereo with Istvan Kertesz (available on a Decca Legends title) largely because he was unhappy with this initial result. After all the years of reading why these recordings were never released, I can now hear it for myself. Also, while the Brahms PC No. 1 (with van Beinum from 1953) and the Grieg (Fistoulari, 1951) are better in terms of their performances, Curzon's stereo remakes with Szell and Fjeldstad respectively just sound so much better than these mono accounts (see my review of the latter, which by the way is quickly going out-of-print). The solo works -- Schubert's Four Impromptus, D899 (1941) and Piano Sonata, D960 (1970), and Brahms' Piano Sonata No. 3 and two Intermezzos (both 1962) -- are impressive but I already have multiple renditions of these works by other celebrated pianists, and I personally don't collect solo music the way I do orchestral works. The same goes for the two 1962 Dvorak and Franck Piano Qunitet performances that comprise the whole of Disc Four. In all, it is an excellent set for collectors, but most of us would have been happy to buy one 8CD set (like the DG "Original Masters" Fricsay and Markevitch sets -- see my reviews) instead of these two little ones.

A Musical Genius.......2002-09-24

I heard this recording as a child and was transfixed by it. It transformed how I felt about the performance of early music. I have just finished the Douglas-Home biography and was thrilled to discover that the disc had been re-issued. It's simply a must-have, the closest we will ever come to hearing this music performed as it was intended to be.

Woodhouse is in my top 5...and I'm not a harpsichord player........1998-10-30

This disc is one of my favorites of all time. Most notable is her use of rubato or flexible time. I find it facinating that such interesting music can be achieved through an instrument with a relatively limited tonal and dynamic range.

First,there is a mistake in the presentation of this CD:this seventh volume in Roosevelt Sykes' complete recorded works on Document includes tunes recorded between February 1941 and December 1944,not 1942.For the rest,this is Roosevelt at his highest level (like always!!!),and so,piano blues at its highest level too. Mr Roosevelt Sykes (aka "the Honeydripper",or "Easy Papa Johnson,or Willie Kelly) was born January 31,1906,Elmar,Arkansas,and died in New Orleans,July 11,1983,after a rather long carreer for a blues artist.He recorded extensively,and played regularly until his death ,77 years old.He influenced many piano players;among them,Eddie Boyd,Detroit Jr,Willie Mabon,Otis Spann,Memphis Slim,and maybe Henry Townsend,Big Maceo or Smiley Lewis.
THis record offers you great tunes by Roosevelt Sykes,with Sidney Catlett (yes!!!) on drums,Alfred Elkins on bass,and probably Big Bill Broonzy on guitar.Did you ever saw Roosevelt playing and singing ? Of course,I never saw him really,just on TV broadcasts.But it's enough to be impressed by the incredible power of this man,either if he's singing or playing.Really,one of my top three blues pianists,with Montana Taylor and Big Maceo.THis CD is full of very great tunes,and some masterpieces of blues piano playing.
The last four tracks show another side of Roosevelt's talent: in "Honeysuckle rose",he manages to play and sing quite like Fats Waller,and Ted Summitt's guitar introduction and solo reminds me a lot of the great Slim Gaillard;"Mellow queen" also sounds very much like Fats."Jivin' the jive" has a furious left hand,and the tune makes me think of Cecil Gant.Finally,"I wonder" is a love song that was also recorded by Louis Armstrong in the fourties.
Here is a beautiful hour of great piano by a master.It could also be a perfect introduction to Roosevelt Sykes' rich and versatile talent.Don't miss it.
