Album Description

Lou Christie's falsetto was among the most distinctive voices in all of pop music, and he was also one of the first solo performers of the rock era to compose his own material, generating some of the biggest and most memorable hits of the mid-1960s: "Two Faces Have I," "Lightnin' Strikes," "Rhapsody in the Rain," and "I'm Gonna Make You Mine" among others.

5 out of 5 stars Lous Christie . . . Still Electric!!!.......2006-09-10

Two words say it all: LOU CHRISTIE!

back in the mid 1960's i was a high schooler . . . and i owned a small pocket transistor radio (a Japanese El Dorado to be exact) which brought a universe of music to me . . . and one of the stars that shone brighter than the rest was a fellow Pennsylvanian by the name of Lou Christie.

I nick-named him "the stiletto falsetto" beacause lou could make a seemingly seamless transition from a baritone to electric falsetto in a marvelously magical way. And his talent made his rock & roll and balladeering sound simply sonorously electric.

And i find myself now in the new millenium . . .2006 . . .and i obtained cd lou recorded live on October 21, 2003 at The Bottom Line in New York City . . . and Lou has lost none of the magic . . . he's matured and evolved and grown, but retained that youthful exuberance and ability to deliver a song with vibrant energy!

This cd contains "some" of lou's hits done "live": "The Gypsy Cried" . . . "Rhapsody In The Rain" . . . "Two Faces Have I" . . . "I'm Gonna make You Mine" . . . and "Lightning Strikes".

and the cd contains a bonus studio track of "Christmas In New York" -- a nostalgically evocative poem in music re-presenting the spirit and feel of the Christmas time in The Big Apple (as i remember travelling through New York during those holidays when i was coming and going home from prep school making the pilgrimage from Grand Central Station to Port Authority Bus Terminal and killing hours of time seeing "the sights and sounds of New York at Christmas").

Lou has gifted us with great live performances on this cd . . . it is worth the rather inexpenisve cost many many times over since you will doubtless play this disc over and over and over again . . .

Thanks Lou Christie for ALL the great music . . . and i hope for much much more yet to come! :)

5 out of 5 stars Vintage Lou in Concert plus an awesome bonus Christmas tune!.......2005-02-01

This album - Lou's first live recording captured in 2003 during one of the final concerts held at the (now closed) New York City night club The Bottom Line - reveals why he is still considered, at 60ish, a great entertainer.

All of Lou's big hits are here: the early do-wop ditties "The Gypsy Cried" and "Two Faces Have I;" his smash love making odes "Lightning Strikes" and "Rhapsody In The Rain" (the "banned" version); the bubblegum classic "I'm Gonna Make You Mine;" and his '70s country flavored comebacker "Beyond The Blue Horizon" which was later included in the film RAIN MAN.

There's also effective remakes of Mel Carter's "Hold Me, Thirll Me, Kiss Me," Bobby Darin's "Mack The Knife" (first recorded by Lou on his Beyond The Blue Horizon album), and The Association's "Never My Love," plus a tribute to his late, great friend Roy Orbison on "It's Over." The concert's highlight is probably the starkly rhythmic and haunting "Rita, Joanie, and the Wayward Wind." First recorded by Lou on his 1997 album Pledging My Love, it combines the Gogi Grant hit with a story composed by Lou of his encounters with two groupies.

The album's other highlight is its final bonus track: a studio recording of Lou's "Christmas In New York" which is one of the finest modern holiday recordings around. The only other places you can purchase "Christmas In New York" is as a cd-single on Lou's website and on the various artist compilation Rockin' Christmas Party, Volume 1. Live and in the studio, Lou's four octave range, highlighted of course by that amazing falsetto, is still going strong. Don't miss Lou when he comes to your area, and until then, check out this album.

5 out of 5 stars The Prince of the High C's Presents his Greatest and More!.......2004-11-26

Those of us who grew up with the music of Lou Christie will remember his flawless falsettos on such hits as "I'm Gonna Make You Mine" and "Lightning Strikes" - the latter became his signature song and forever after earned him the nickname "Lightning Lou." In this concert, recorded live at the Bottom Line nightclub in New York City in October 2003, Lou proves that he can still reach the high notes without stumbling on the way up the ladder - he offers us his greatest hits, and more, sung in the same key as when he originally recorded them.

After the exciting live intro gets us in the mood, and Lou gets us in the groove with his opening number, "I Still Wanna Rock & Roll With You," the handsome and still-youthful entertainer launches into his first Top 40 record, from 1962, "The Gypsy Cried," which he delivers - yes - in the same key as the original recording. He then goes on to sing an uncensored version of his 1966 offering "Rhapsody in the Rain," a tune which was (gasp!) actually banned by several markets for its risque lyric: "We were makin' out in the rain" (Lou actually had to change this to "We fell in love in the rain" in order to get airplay). What a difference 38 years makes - this song wouldn't even raise an eyebrow these days. Whether it's about makin' out or falling in love, or going "much too far," this song, with its touch of Tchaikovsky, is always a delight to listen to.

The next track is Lou's wonderfully romantic version of the 1965 Mel Carter hit "Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me," delivered with rapturous longing - every lady in the audience that night was surely wishing Lou were singing this song directly to her. Oh, be still my heart! Next on deck, another falsetto-laden early hit, "Two Faces Have I," followed by a vintage number Lou recorded originally in 1974 and which became a Top 20 hit on the Adult Contemporary charts, "Beyond the Blue Horizon." Lou's recording enjoyed a resurgence of popularity when Barry Levinson included it in his 1988 film, Rain Man, which starred Tom Cruise and Oscar winner Dustin Hoffman.

After the uptempo "The Heart of Saturday Night," Lou pays tribute to the late, great Roy Orbison with Orbison's "It's Over." Next up, "I'm Gonna Make You Mine," Lou's top-tenner from 1969 (complete with the high notes, of course!) ... and then a pleasant surprise, my personal favorite of this CD's tracks, a thinly disguised (and oh-so-delicious) autobiographical number titled "Rita, Joanie and the Wayward Wind" ... ahhh, the temptations of an entertainer on the road, and woe to the ladies who fall for him - this isn't your mama's "The Wayward Wind," and if the vamp intro doesn't clue you in, the lyrics surely will. Lou's backup gals, The Crayons step in with some brilliantly executed counterpoint vocals during the final repitition of the verse.

The delightful "Sure Fell in Love With You" follows, and is itself followed by an equally delightful "Mack the Knife," always a crowd pleaser and very well done by Lou - you won't be able to keep your fingers from snapping or your toes from tapping. Lou concludes with his signature song, "Lightnin' Strikes" - still nailing the high notes - before encoring with the Association hit "Never My Love."

This CD also includes a bonus track, Lou's charming "Christmas in New York," featuring The Crayons on backing vocals. Even if you aren't from the Metro NYC area, this song will make you want to visit Rockefeller Center at tree-lighting time, or at the very least snuggle up with your lover in front of the TV to watch it live!

Lightning Lou Christie is a talented, charismatic performer, and this wonderful CD is a must-have for your collection.

    3 out of 5 stars Three stars...easily.......2005-02-23

Steve Forbert and the Rough Squirells are captured live at The Bottom Line and the band offers up 17 nifty tracks for folkers to savor. Forbert's unique vocal stylings are still intact and the band is spry and enthusiastic, and production is very good. Some of my faves are "Strange" and "Goin down to Laurel", and yes, he performs "Romeo's Tune" for anyone who cares to remember his biggest chart hit. Forbert has always been a low key sucess and this seems to suit him and his fans well. Although "Live..." won't set the world ablaze it still asks questions of how a talent such as Forbert can remain so annonymous when others mining the same genre achieve greater commercial sucess. Go figure, and check back at a later date with your response.

3 out of 5 stars Pleasant recording capturing Forberts recent live sound.......2001-10-02

Forbert's latest live release, his third in the past five years, is the first to document his recent compositions and live-show. This seventeen-track disc records a mid-2000 performance at New York's Bottom Line, and highlights music from his last few LPs. Included are six tracks from 2000's "Evergreen Boy," three from 1995's "Mission of the Crossroad Palms," and one from his 1996 release, "Rocking Horse Head." Earlier material is present in "Goin Down to Laurel" and "You Cannot Win (If You Do Not Play)" (the latter in medley with Chuck Berry's "Nadine"), from his 1978 debut, and his only Top-40 hit, "Romeo's Tune" from the 1979 sophomore release, "Jackrabbit Slim."

The early tunes also turned up on Forbert's other two live releases, albeit incarnated by somewhat different touring groups. His latest four-piece edition of the Rough Squirrels shares players with the same-named band on 1997's "Here's Your Pizza" (itself a document of a 1987 date), but 1996's "King Biscuit Flower Hour" (documenting a 1982 performance) has an entirely different band. The current edition of the band is focussed and tight, providing a variety of folk-rock and rock backings, with more than a hint of MG-like soul (especially in the opening guitar that borrows a legendary Steve Cropper riff).

This is mostly a fans-only release, as the flavors it adds to the studio tracks are subtle, rather than revelatory. The dearth of introductory or between-song chatter turns this into more of a restatement of recent recordings than a reproduction of the concert experience. Those whoýve attended Forbertýs shows will enjoy how this recording captures his current set list, but those whoýve yet to cotton to Forbert's songwriting talent and idiosyncratic vocals won't find much of anything new to latch on to here.

3-1/2 stars, if Amazon allowed fractional reviews.

5 out of 5 stars Live from the Bottom Line.......2001-08-19

This is one of Steve Forbert's best c.d.'s. Anytime you can't make it to one of his shows, put on this c.d. and you'll feel like you're right there....

4 out of 5 stars Steve Does NYC--Again.......2001-08-16

This CD seems to center on Steve's last two albums(Evergreen Boy} and (Rocking Horse Head). While I'm not a fan of most live albums, the sound on this recording is superb with the 5 piece Rough Squirrels playing as tight as a studio session. The highlight song is a beautiful version of "Rose Marie" which even duplicates the splendid electrified acoustic sound of the guitar work on Forbert's previous album. The only problem with this CD is it doesn't offer many of Steve's older songs(i.e. Streets of This Town or Born Too Late).

Steve Forbert continues to be one of the best kept secrets around and that is truly baffling to me. His self deprecating humor and songs of unrequited love continue to be gems. I only hope that he continues to record and perform long into the future for those of us who admire and appreciate his talent.

5 out of 5 stars Third live platter and nothin's the matter..........2001-08-15

Steve Forbert's been trolling through his considerable body of work recently and releasing one winner after another. This live,July 2000 concert makes a nice addition to Steve's recent releases 'Young Guitar Days' and the live in '89 'Here's Your Pizza". His earliest live album 'King Biscuit Hour' is still tops in my book, but that's only because I'm such a fan of his early stuff. This release finds him cookin' with gas ably backed by the fearless "Rough Squirrels", one tough and wiry road band that punches up Steve's gentler songs and burns high octane on the rockers. This time around the setlist focuses on post- 'American In Me' material for the most part, with terrific versions of 'Evergreen Boy', 'It Sure Was Better Back Then' and a really tasty version of 'Rose Marie'. There's lotsa stuff from Steve's 90's albums and he brings out the 70's stuff like 'Goin' Down To Laurel', 'Complications' and 'Romeos Tune' for the listening pleasure of old geezers like me. It rocks and it rolls and to quote the man himself it's "..so good to feel good again". Get this one and have yourself a well deserved smile.

5 out of 5 stars Laura Gets Loose, Has Fun And Rocks!.......2006-12-23

This is my favorite Laura Nyro live album.

By the time of this recording (1988), Laura had pretty much outgrown her
"fragile artist" stage. Instead of whispering a few serious, spacey words in between songs to the audience, here she is loose, freewheeling, at times raucous, and appears to be having a ball with a hot-rocking band.

Her other live albums: "Seasons Of Light" (1978) was jazz-fusion based,
"The Loom's Desire" (recorded '93 and '94) was late-period, intimate Nyro
in a small club with just piano and backing vocalists, and "Spread Your Wings" (recorded 1971) captures the first-period hysteria that surrounded (and engulfed her). All show the various stages of her career nicely and all are worth having.

But if you have to have only ONE live Laura, this is it. The band rocks,
Laura never sounded better and more vibrant and the recording quality is great.

This was a one-off project for the small Cypress label in between her main Columbia commitments. It is now out of print.

Will somebody PLEASE re-release this gem?

5 out of 5 stars Attention To Whoever Owns The Master Recording!.......2006-09-17

Reissue this CD NOW. I do not understand what the hold-up is to reissuing this great music by one of the premiere songwriters of the 1960's. The performance by Laura on this recording IS her legacy. It is Laura at her best. There are tons of people out there who want to own a copy of this CD. They want to remember Laura as she was, singing and playing her heart out, and this CD fills that need. Laura would have wanted this. The delay must end NOW. Reissue this CD NOW!

5 out of 5 stars Another GREAT Live Performance.......2005-09-13

I guess I am very lucky to have this cd. I actually picked it up on a BMG clearance sale! I don't even remember how much I paid for it, I basically bought it on a whim. I'm not a die hard Laura Nyro fan, but I was vaguely familiar with her style of music. When I was much younger, I had obtained a promotional copy of her "Nested" album (1978) which is also a "hard-to-find" out of print gem, and I liked her music. This is from a kid who mostly listened to Led Zeppelin and Aerosmith!

The quality of her voice and musical styling really came through and "touched me." I also realised over the years as I collected music that some performers are simply best "Live" and the number of live records offered reflected that. Niel Diamond is another artist with many, many live albums. There is a reason for this. Laura Nyro is no exception. She has such an energy that comes out and can only be captured during a real live performance.

Laura Nyro's "Live at the Bottom Line" has become one of my favorite discs. I can't imagine any of her fans that would be disappointed in this fantastic set of songs. Her voice is absolutely beautiful, and the musicianship and sound quality is excellant! If you are a fan of Laura's, or can simply appreciate good music and a great Live performance, do not hesitate to seek this album out.

If main songwriter Ray Davies was the brains of the Kinks, brother/guitarist Dave was its heart and soul. The younger Davies arguably invented heavy metal with his metallic, bar-chord-crunch guitar style and his brashness fueled the band's energetic live shows. This lively 1997 club show reinforces those notions, as Dave plows through 27 songs with a pace worthy of the Ramones. Smart enough not to let his tumultuous, decades-long rivalry with brother Ray get in the way of his taste, the younger Davies fills fully half of the set list with versions of his older brother's songs, be they familiar ("She's Got Everything," "All Day and All the Night," "You Really Got Me"), cult faves ("David Watts," "I'm Not Like Everybody Else"), or obscurities ("Look Through Any Doorway"). A handful of vintage covers pay homage to Davies's own musical roots, while his own songs stand in gutsy contrast to his elder brother's often ornate constructions, delivered in a voice that's reedier, but instantly familiar. Gritty, humorous and heartfelt, this live recording pays tribute to one of rock's most influential, if consistently underappreciated, talents. --Jerry McCulley

The Dave Davies cd live is fantastic!I would always buy Kinks albums and cd's and be disapointed that only a couple songs were great and the rest ( Ray Davies Stuff ) really put me to sleep!I am into " You Really bGot Me " not " Village Green and such " This guy is a player .....he favors a Fender Telecaster and I must add very well! Heavy chords and riffs with excellent lead breaks make for a worthwhile investment.

Dave Davies puts on a great live show! You get your money's worth with 79 minutes of great non-stop rock and roll. It's split pretty much down the middle between Dave's own songs and old Kinks favorites. His great guitar work is prominent throughout this CD. I especially liked "Imaginations Real", which has some tasty guitar licks, and "I'm not like everybody else", a mean 6 minute scorcher of a rock song that's part of a 4 song encore on here. He gets a little psychedelic with "Psycho Lounge", where he starts out singing Strawberry Fields and ends up doing his rendetion of "Girl From Ipanena", all done tongue in cheek. And then he kicks it in to high gear with my favorite on here "One Night With You", a song written like it was supposed to be played live. You can tell this old rocker, whose been around almost 40 years still enjoys performing. And I enjoyed every minute at the Bottom Line.

5 out of 5 stars "LITTLE BROTHER" ROCKS THE HOUSE.......2000-08-18

Dave was always the rocker in the Kinks. It was his jackhammer riffs that powered the early records, and almost single-handedly created heavy metal. So it's only natural that while Ray flirts with novels, West End musicals and nostalgic revues, Dave is still out there rocking his balls to the wall. This show features all the hits and more, 18 tracks of pure, bottom line (excuse the pun) rock and roll. Sheer freaking bliss.

5 out of 5 stars Bottom Line: No Unfinished Business here..........2000-08-08

This is a terrific CD from start to finish of just pure, unadulterated rock and roll energy. Dave Davies delivers a spunky and heartfelt set of KINKS classics, obscure hits, and songs from his solo career that is guaranteed to delight both KINKS fans and casual listeners alike. A great live document from a true great legend and one of the most influential (and criminally under-appreciated) guitar players in the history of rock and roll. Buy this CD and then go track down the other recent KINKS CD reissues before they go out of print.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Singing, Great Songwriting - A Classic.......2001-04-24

This CD is a showcase for a great singer-songwriter. Many of the songs on this CD are highlights from her two earlier Hightone releases as well as a preview of songs on Highways and Honky Tonks (a future release at the time of the recording). In addition, Heather does cover a few older songs. Not only does Heather have a great Bakersfield sound; her songwriting has the intelligence of a Mary Chapin Carpenter. For someone looking for an introduction to a great performer, this CD serves as a greatest hits primer. Fortunately, there will be many more hits in the future.

    5 out of 5 stars Such a marvelous voice........2007-03-25

At the time of this recording Patti's voice was sort of on the cusp of girl to woman. It was a bit raspy but in a good way. I got this album back in 1981 as a teen because I was a Patti Austin fan. I wasn't disappointed and I still listen to it today.

There are some real gems on this album like "Let's All Live and Give Together." My personal favorite is "Wait A Little While." The album is upbeat and jazzy and sometimes slow and sexy.

We get to hear Patti's silly country side with her remake of Randy Newman's "Rider In The Rain". I still laugh when I listen to it.

I would recommend this. It's cute and funny and actual good music on every track which is rare to find these days. I enjoyed the whole album... Oh, I forgot! She sings "Love Me By Name" on this which is on the "Sounds... And Stuff Like That!" album. It's a really nice live version. The fact that this is live and was only done to get out of the CTI contract doesn't transfer to the quality of the recording.

    Go Patti!

5 out of 5 stars Laura Gets Loose, Has Fun, And Rocks!.......2006-12-15

5 out of 5 stars great fun from the later period.......2004-04-28

This live concert from 1988 is not as serious as Season Of Lights but is so much fun. This was a return to touring and Laura is enjoying herself with a great band backing her up. Her voice is strong and she puts some different and fresh slants on her classics while introducing new material. Again, she lets the band shine with some neat jams and kids-around with the audience. Stand outs are the opening medley of The Confession and High-Heeled Sneakers--it works!!!, and Japanese Restaurant Song. My personal favorites are The Park Song & Companion. It should be re-issued.

This is possibly the funniest CD released in the 1990s. It shows Harvey at his peak as a performer and personality. His recreation of the wig scene from "Valley of the Dolls" is worth the cost of the disc alone. Search for this one, it's worth it!
