Often scattershot and self-indulgent, tribute albums have become a much maligned genre, but Benny Carter's Songbook is the sort of project that justifies the whole concept. Ideal starter for McPartland collection.......2000-02-07

This is a superb introduction to Marian's pianistic talents. It features alto sax legend Benny Carter's compositions and the composer plays on about half the tracks, which is all the more remarkable in that Carter was 82 when this music was recorded. The highlights include the trio versions of "When Lights are Low," which Marian plays frequently at clubs, and "Key Largo." Carter joins the trio for fine versions of "I'm in the Mood for Swing" and "Easy Money." An ideal introduction to McPartland's piano style and Carter's tunes.

On a scale of 1 to 10 this album rates a 15. Elegant compositions of the legendary Carter performed by an all star cast of legends along with a few new voices who prove themselves equally impressive. If you are not familiar with the works of Benny Carter, composer, you owe it to yourself to buy this CD.
