This is an exceptional 1981 quartet session with Art Ensemble members Jarman and Moye joined by the stunningly articulate young trombonist Craig Harris and veteran bassist Rafael Garrett. The opening "Zulu Village" features a brilliant display of Moye's hand drumming with the others all contributing to the effect on a variety of flutes and Harris adding potent resonant bass with a didgeridoo. Jarman's "Happiness Is" is a more straightahead blowing tune with fine, booting free tenor from Jarman and quick-thinking fleet trombone from Harris. Garrett, a little-known player who contributed to some of Coltrane's expanded bands in the mid-'60s, is a constant presence, contributing deft lines to a session filled with joy and invention. --Stuart Broomer
