Taking the long road.......2007-02-25
Ruthie Foster shows the full range of her musicianship on this remarkable recording, which captures not only her rich voice but her wonderful sense of humor and love for music that stretches over a broad range of genres. Whether playing on a tango theme or drawing from her wonderful dip bag of folk music, Ruthie never fails to please the listener, especially on this album.
If you can see her live, then: get! If not..........2006-12-04
...then you owe it to yourself to buy this album. You won't miss her on stage again: expect goose bumps, and maybe some damp eyes, just listening to the CD. This is one of the best live recordings -- of anyone -- that I have heard. Buy it now, as the first in your collection, and you can tell your friends later: "Ruthie Foster? Oh yeah, I know her music!"
The Best!!.......2005-06-15
Ruthie Foster is THE BEST pure singer I have ever heard. When she sings Walk On and/or Oh Susannah - chills...
I absolutely LOVE HER - not only her singing but her guitar playing also. Check out/download her video at Kerrville from the internet and see her perform. A genius who can sing anything: blues, folk, whatever. I LOVE her - she is my favorite singer. Both her Stages and Runaway Soul albums- whew!!
Wish she would perform on national TV...
Powerful, Transcendently Beautiful!.......2004-11-11
A couple of weeks ago on a stiflingly sultry afternoon at the Texas Book Festival I heard in the distance this incredible voice singing the old Curtis Mayfield song, "People Get Ready." I moved quickly toward it and caught the last two minutes of Ruthie Foster's one hour set at the Entertainment Tent. In those two minutes, the gritty spirituality of her bluesy gospel rendition of that classic gave me the chills, and, I confess, watery eyes. She shook me. I told my wife that she was the greatest singer I had ever heard, and I'm not sure that I would qualify that even now. I ordered two of her CD's as soon as I could get to the internet and Amazon.com. The studio produced "Runaway Soul" is truly great, and I highly recommend it, but "Stages" is as close to perfection as any human has a right to expect. I agree with the other reviewer. It's the best live CD I own, with the possible exception of "James Brown at the Apollo!" Her rendition of "Oh, Susana," is revelatory. Foster discovers beneath the hokey joy of the tradition tune a transcendently beautiful lament. It is a shockingly insightful performance. Haunting. I could go on and on about other great numbers on the CD, but won't. Just buy it and enjoy it.
Stages is Awesome.......2004-08-09
This is simply the best live album I have heard! Having seen Ruthie Foster live at the Canmore Folk Fest - Stages stays true to her performance and gives the listener insight in to the fabulous range and style of Ruthie Foster - highly recommended.

Skip this one.......2007-05-07
I'm sorry, I don't want to be mean, but this just isn't that good. Why did Duke want to stockpile all of this stuff? I don't feel much of his sensibility through it, and the recording of Sittin' and a Rockin' is downright trivial. The supressed wailing energy is what makes the original such a classic - an amazing Ellingtonian use of understatement, here replaced by "Funky Jazz" cliches. And the idea of using organ is potentially a good one, but Wild Bill Davis isn't the man. And Harold Ashby is the wrong choice for All Too Soon - it's OK, but not more. There are things about late Ellington I don't understand, and many of them are included on this disc. For a man who worked so many amazing changes on the blues form, these blues pieces are just simply substandard.
Small-group Ellington late in his career.......2005-11-15
Duke Ellington, who spent just about every waking moment writing music, loved to assemble his orchestra in recording studios, at his own expense, and try out his musical ideas on the band, making adjustments based on what he heard. (Much of this material was recorded at the time and subsequently issued on CDs.) The first six sides on this CD, which comprise what Duke referred to as THE COMBO SUITE, are of this nature.
Having just returned from a tour of Europe a week earlier, he brought into the studio 8 members of the band to work on some new compositions. The results are very interesting. The title track, which would occasionally be played in later concert appearances, is a nice blues with good solos by Johnny Hodges and Lawrence Brown. OUT SOUTH is a quiet gospel tune, while TELL ME 'BOUT MY BABY is broiling with excellent Cat Anderson on muted trumpet. Paul Gonsalves is featured on the up-tempo NEAR NORTH, and the handsome blues KENTUCKY AVENUE has good solos all around. THE COMBO SUITE is a nice addition to the Ellington repertory, and I'm glad it was recorded that day and brought out by Fantasy 18 years later.
The rest of the material on this CD comes from various sessions in 1970, and some feature Wild Bill Davis on organ. All are small-group recordings; ALL TOO SOON is by a quintet that features Harold Ashby on tenor. JUST A SITTIN' AND A ROCKIN' has Norris Turney playing flute in the part usually played by the whole orchestra as the tenor player (going all the way back to Ben Webster) states the theme. It's a bit of a shock at first, but turns out very classy. This is a most enjoyable CD that Ellington fans should certainly latch on to.
Excellent Find!.......2000-06-26
This completely instrumental album was recorded late in Duke's career in two separate styles...the first half with swinging blues numbers and the second with Duke on the organ during some interesting but tasteful jazz numbers. "Intamacy of the Blues", "Kentucky Avenue, A.C.", and "Out South" are three of my favorites...excellent tracks to listen to and rare finds!

Great Piece.......2001-01-03
I happened to hear one of my friends playing the opening track, "Diane", and was hooked within 30 seconds. "Intimacy" is a truly wonderful Jazz album. Numbers like "Sisters", "Lil Touch of Jazz" and the Title track "Intimacy" keep me coming back to this CD when I have company or want to relax. This one that should be in any Jazz collector's CD stack.
Great album.......2000-05-12
I had never heard of Walter Beasley before this album came out. I heard "If You've Ever Loved Someone and Lost" on the radio and from that song alone decided to buy the album. I wasn't disappointed. From the first track "Dianne" to the final "Intimacy" the work is smooth. I especially love "If You've Ever...", "In the Morning (En La Manana)", "Sisters", "Lil Touch of Jazz" and "Don't Say Goodbye". He sings well and plays the sax well. The album is the kind that you can put on and just sit back and listen to without having to skip songs you don't like. It's smooth.
great debut album.......2000-02-08
This was a great breakthrough album for WB. "If Ever Loved Someone and Lost" "Don't Say Goodbye" and "A Little Touch of Jazz" helped but him on our minds. These were true and honest songs. He is very talented likewise.

Customer Reviews:
Great debut B3 album.......2006-02-08
With the emergence of Joey DeFrancesco in the beginning of the '90's revitalizing the Hammond B3 organ, more great B3 youngsters came to the surface. One of them was Larry Goldings, originally a pianist working with Jon Hendricks and JIm Hall among others, this great CD is his debut album on the organ and his debt to the Jimmy Smith tradition is obvious at the recording time. Pairing with Peter Bernstein on gitar and the "wonderboy" Bill Stewart on drums, this a tight quality trio plays standards like "Skylark" and "When Johnny Comes Marching Home" with demand and control. Veteran tenor saxofonist David "Fathead" Newman add punch and colour to some of the tunes but not at a level expected from that man. For B3 afficiados - notice a unfamiliar jazz organ sound on Goldings B3 since he's using a vibrato registration that is more convenient to the theatre organ tradition...shaky but doesn't diminish the overall quality of the album.
