Jive at Five.......2005-09-18
This is a great straight-ahead jazz album with 5 musicians doing exactly what they know how to do best: swing. There is a wonderful consistency to the playing here, whether the tune is slow like the 12-bar blues WEDNESDAY'S BLUES or up tempo like the other blues on the CD, CUEIN' THE BLUES. Flanagan is especially good here. And the all-important rhythm section is solid. A most worthwhile date.
First -rate mainstream swing........1999-11-18
Tommy Flanagan is just a marvelous accompanist and soloist and Eddie Jones provides a rock solid swinging bass. I particularly enjoy the drumming of Oliver Jackson whose sound and tasteful accents really give this quintet a lift. My favorite of the well-selected tracks is "Cuein' The Blues."
This CD along with Budd Johnson's "Let's Swing" were two of the best Prestige Swingville recordings.
