Album Description

"Voo Doo Chicken," "Ve" and "Glad Rap" showcase Cooling's fascination for Brazilian music, but at the same time she's able to incorporate her stinging , modern style of guitar-playing faintly reminiscent of Emily Remler. Plus, Cooling is a good singer as well. She clearly has what it takes to develop her artistry and record more fine, programmable sides. We're knocked out." - the Gavin Report

5 out of 5 stars How Jazz-Rock was Born. British anyways........2005-07-21

Nucleus's first two albums are some nice pieces of history in the field of jazz-rock. Elastic Rock is kind sounds like Nucleus rushed thought the pieces, but the album does has good rifts and solos mostly by Jenkins and Carr. Highlights on this album here are Twisted Track,an original by Speeding and Peter Brown, that features some nice country blues guitar by Speeding,Torrid Zone and Persephones Blues. Songs like Stonescape,Striantion and Speaking of Myself... are indulgent ideas. Next is a more polished,funk-filled We'll Talk About it Later. Song For a Bearded Lady is a classic and sounds a little better then Hazard Profile from Soft Machine inwhich had Jenkins and Marshall in it, but the song is a gritty funk number with some heavy distored wah-wah piano and slick guitar work. Sun Child follows the theme but with some of the most complex rhythm by Clyde and Mrshall. The gloomy Lullaby For a Lomesome Child is next with a basic rift and head but no solo. The Title Track is a disorganized piece with Speeding holding it together. The long Oasis is an odd piece, you can really get it in your head. Ballad of Joe Pimp is fun to listen to. The unknown singer and simple-minded lyrics get tedious kind of. Easter 1916 is a reprise off of Battle of Boogaloo with some gruff vocal lines making you think of Willam Shatner, but the end of the song is the best with Brian Smith and John Marshall going free-form on us, kind of like Jupiter by Coltrane. A highly recommended double set to own. Recommendation: Six by Soft Machine.

4 out of 5 stars Great Music from a Forgotten Era.......2004-09-30

This CD reminds me that the In a Silent Way did not spring full blown from the forehead of Miles Davis. The first disc is an excellent example of In a Silent Way style modal jazz. It's no wonder from listening to this that the addition of 2 Englishmen made the Miles stuff leap so far ahead. The second disc is even better in my estimation. Some amazing guitar work from the underappreciated Chris Spedding. Great themes from Karl Jenkins and terrific playing from the whole ensemble. A worthwhile purchase for anyone who enjoys the music that Miles made in this era. The fact that the band is led by trumpeter Ian Carr only makes the comparisons more obvious. There's only one Miles, but this stuff holds its weight on its own merits.

5 out of 5 stars What a sound!.......2004-08-21

Ian Carr & Nucleus is a genuine pioneer of British Jazz-Rock Fusion blending free-jazz with psychedelic improvisational rock elements. There is true spirit in their works, far from nowadays pathetic fusion music. Highly-recommended!!!

p.s.: You can see free MP3 file above on this page. Just stop trying to judge IC & Nucleus by it because it is the song of the completely different group with the same name. Amazon should correct this.

4 out of 5 stars British underground jazz-rock.......2002-05-27

I'm quiet surprised to be the first to review this fantastic album. Led by trompetist Ian Carr, and supported by Karl Jenkins and John Marshall (before joining Soft Machine) this band just realized this two albums in 1971. I just can highly recommend this one to anyone who likes Soft Machine and those british jazz-rock bands.

Album Description

Along with ANGLAGARD, ANEKDOTEN is the most famous example of the new Scandinavian School. This trend mixes dark and gloomy influences with an extreme energy a bit in the way of KING CRIMSON on "Red" or UNIVERS ZERO. The orchestration includes Mellotron and cello (All performed by pretty Anna Sofi DAHLBERG !) and allows to turn in one second from a vaporous atmosphere to the paroxysm of frenzy. "Vemod" (1993) can be considered as a total masterpiece, and "Nucleus" follows right in the wake. A music with a rare intensity which let any listener breathless. Not to be missed !

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Pure Prog Excitement.......2006-10-18

I have been breathlessly awaiting this CD since I heard some samples on the band's website. And guess what? I wasn't let down one iota! These cats can play some wicked good music! There is a Crimson vibe, but it is more reminiscent of their later releases in terms of intensity. About the time you relax during a delicious, dark atmospheric interlude, here comes a manic screaching guitar out of left field! So be prepared.... this could cause a coronary in some of our "seasoned" prog lovers. Bizzare time signature changes, dissonant chord structures (hold on, I'm salivating heavily!), awesome song structures and the lyrics aren't too shabby. This is tech- metal meets ambient, meets psych, meets you name it! Quite a smorgasbord. Certainly a disc that merits REPEAT listening (if you can take it!) The only, very slight disappointment is a lack of the beloved mellotron passages. Don't get me wrong, there is ample amount, but I also ordered Anekdoten's debut "Vemod" which should satisfy that craving. If I can't buy Anglagard anywhere, by God I'll take Anekdoten (not a bad replacement, I might add.) I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this to any of my Amazon brethern (or sistern!) Should be in anyone's prog collection.

5 out of 5 stars Heavy, Crunchy Swedish Prog of The First Order!.......2004-09-24

Here, the band sure has come a long way from its beginnings as King Edward (a King Crimson cover band).

By and large, it's a loud 'n noisy maelstrom with a surprising amount of detail and nuance, balanced out by mournful cello and those spooky sounding Mellotrons. The rhythm section is relentless in its heaviness, insistent drumming coupled with angry distorted bass not unlike that of Magma at times. Add to this very tasteful Frippian guitar textures (not a lot of solo pyrotechnics here although Nikolas Berg is a more than capable axe-slinger).

The vocals are not the band's strong point exactly, they're not bad really but not really outstanding either. Compositionally, you can hear traces of the 1972-1974 editions of King Crimson but yet there's something markedly different.

I find it difficult to pick out a favorite track as they're all so strong and beautifully written. One that is VERY different from the rest is the closer "In Freedom", which after all the heaviness and gloom offers a ray of hope, underscored by lyrical cello and violins plus hazy Mellotron vibes (a sound not used very often). "Here" is the album's one "dirge" so to speak, buoyed along by funeral drumming and a mournful harmonium.

Like your Prog intense and toothy with lots of that good 'ol Mellotron? Do check this out!

3 out of 5 stars Great and not so great.......2005-05-12

"Roots" is a really solid, British 70's Fusion album and well worth buying. Great musicianship and very playable.
"Labyrinth" on the other hand is hard work. It has some truly great moments but they are sandwiched between passages of experimental nonsense. The sleeve notes actually quote Ian Carr as being apologetic for the compositional failings. Not a good sign but it shows he has integrity. I suspect that these two albums represent the best and the worst of Nucleus. (Just a hunch.) I'm sure there is someone out there who will suggest that I've got it all the wrong way around but what can you do.

This is a great live record, recorded in Germany in 1977.

Four quietly sizzling and dazzling tracks. Trumpet/flugelhorn, electric piano/synthesiser and sax lines underpinned by brilliant grooves on percussion and superb bass playing, especially the solo on "Mysteries" by Bill Kristian, written by keyboard player Geoff Castle. All other tunes by Ian Carr.

One of my all time favourites from the Nucleus and Soft Machine catalogue.

      4 out of 5 stars Live Nucleus.......2007-02-03

Here we have a dozen live tracks, recorded in March 1970 and February 1971, cagily described as "live in Europe" (possibly because the venue would not license their release). Straight off the soundboard, the sound quality is everything one could hope for, with excellent fidelity in mono (first set) or stereo (second set) and only minimal polite applause between tracks.

The band is only 6 months old in the first set, touring to support their debut album and it shows in the long, jamming, not-particularly-gelled sound. It is the sound of six talented soloists following the barest of charts. John Marshall in particular stands out as a powerhouse drummer holding the explosive ensemble together as best he can.

By the second set, 11 months and two more albums later, they've grown into a cohesive working unit with less emphasis on showoff soloing and more on tight unison themes and mutual support.

The cover includes the standard Nucleus story by Nigel Cross and a few archival travelog photos, though unfortunately none of the band in performance. Humorously the roadside photos from their trip to the Newport Jazz Festival are listed under "Nucleus European Tour" (!)

This release makes a nice adjunct to the Cuneiform release "Live in Bremen" recorded three months later in the midst of the band's first (but by no means last) personnel changes.
