5 out of 5 stars Great album.......2006-07-28

In response to the previous review, "Ghost In This House" and "The Moon Over Georgia" indeed were not included in this album. But for obvious reasons. Those two songs had not been recorded yet. They first appeared on Shenandoah's 1990 album, "Extra Mile". This is a great cd and the standout song is clearly the number one hit, "Two Dozen Roses". What a beautiful song. Another number one hit on this album is "The Church on Cumberland Road". Rick Hall, one of the album's producers, didn't really care for a song about a groom running late for his wedding and therefor wasn't really for putting it on the album. It made it and became another number one for the band. "See If I Care", a top ten hit, is another good song. But why put "She Doesn't Cry Anymore" on the album? This song first appeared on their debut album two years earlier and is a great song, but why they decided to re-release it on this album is beyond me. This is truly a great album overall and was their most sucessful one to boot.

4 out of 5 stars original music.......2006-05-15

Great original music from Shenandoah. I gave it only four stars because "Ghost in this House" and "Moon over Georgia" are not on it. Very meaningful lyrics and tunes. Well worth buying especially at a used price.

Had just heard this c.d first time last week. What an unbelievable PLEASANT SURPRISE,it is not often these days to listen to something once and take a liking to it or just plain love it-where was I in '89?-Very fresh and catchy and meaninful.
It just goes to show, learn something new-like something new everyday and always keep a fresh open mind!

    Album Description

The Road Not Taken: French Saxophone Masterpieces is a collection of some of the most influential and important music in the saxophone repertoire. With the exception of the Pieces Caracteristiques of Dubois, no current recording exsisted untill now of these works. The title, "The Road Not Taken", comes of course from the famous poem of Robert Frost, but it was also the title of a 1994 New York Times article discussing the life and music of the French composer Charles Koechlin (1867-1950). Koechlin had lived his creative life as he saw fit, with little regard to fame, fortune, or current trends. If he had then his music would not have been as individual as it was. This approach to creativity could also be used to describe the entire school of French composition. During the later half of the 19th century French composers became extremely nationalistic. The German school of composition was taking over in Europe. The French decided not to allow such a thing to happen in France. Therefore they set out to create what we now call the "French sound". It is beautifully unique. The music on this recording would not have exsisted if the French artistic community had not taken the road that allowed them to find there own voice.

    5 out of 5 stars A Necessary Addition.......2004-12-26

As a classical saxophonist at the New England Conservatory of Music, I have had the chance to hear many saxophonists, live and on recordings. This is actually my second review of this CD, the first was done 3 years ago when I had only 2 saxophone CD's. Now that my collection nears 30 CD's and I have been out into the world of classical music, I have now just started to truly value Richard Hodges' PERFECT intonation, flawless technique, exact articulation, and an amazing pure tone. This is a must have addition to any saxophonists collection.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Ever.......2002-02-15

The Road Not Taken is a great example of what classical saxophone should sound like. The pieces are masterfully played, and i would strongly recomend this CD. The last track is a very special treat, and a very satisfying ending to such a masterpiece.

        Album Description

Review by Alex Henderson Lou Lanza showed promise on his debut album, The Road Not Taken, which tended to be generally more restrained than his sophomore effort, Corner Pocket. Although "Oh, Lady Be Good!" proved that the Philadelphian had no problem swinging in a horn-like fashion at a brisk tempo, Lanza's romantic side dominated the little-known CD. Lanza showed how strong a ballad singer he could be on appealing versions of "Midnight Sun," "My Funny Valentine" and "My Ship," and his talents as a composer were illustrated by romantic originals ranging from the introspective ballad "The Darkness Within" to the poignant "Lilliana" and the bossa nova "I Wish I Knew." Lanza's solid Philly support includes guitarist Jimmy Bruno and saxman Larry McKenna, who was one of the city's top tenor men but had enjoyed little national exposure. Although the more risk-taking Corner Pocket would be a better introduction to Lanza's talents, The Road Not Taken is pleasing and enjoyable.

        Customer Reviews:

        1 out of 5 stars Disappointing recording.......2004-01-18

I had such high hopes for this wonderfully chosen compilation of Randall Thompson's choral music, including Alleluia and Peaceable Kingdom - such masterpieces of American a capella writing. I took a risk on this unknown choral ensemble, and found a deeply disappointing recording. I agree with Mr. Taggart, the first reviewer, who noted the "shrill high end." I would add that the voices sound old but not prime quality. The acoustics are cavernous, and may help cover up some of the choir's shortcomings, but work against a "clean" sound. I wish I knew of a good recording of this same repertoire.

        5 out of 5 stars Underrated, Underplayed.......2003-11-09

Randall Thompson is by many standards one of the most underrated
and underplayed composers of the century.
In this wonderful CD, his music is simplistic-- to the point -- unlike Mozart, Bach, etc... his European counterparts, who are clearly more complex.
Many have rated his one-word piece "Alleluia" as a true masterpiece of subtelty and simplicity.
How many other composers can take just one word and turn it in such small ways to make it the joy that it is?
Whether it be the dramatic uplifting, timeless, and timely "Testament of Freedom", or, his "Frostiana" which humbly gives respect to the poetic works of Robert Frost, Randall Thompson has made major contributions to 20th century music. And, to think, he was an American composer!!

4 out of 5 stars Good enough for the average bear.......2003-01-07

Like one of the other reviewers, I've sung the Alleluia and the Peacable Kingdom. Maybe my ear isn't as refined as some of the other reviewers' ears, but I found the recording a great pleasure to listen to. I have another recording of Thompson's music and the choir on it is nowhere near as good as this one.

3 out of 5 stars For fans only!!!.......2001-11-19

This CD is a good source for a lot of Randall Thompson's less frequently recorded choral works in their full orcestrations. Unfortunately the performances make the recording more a novelty buy for fans rather than a solid CD. The interpetations are routine, if not slow and plodding. The Michael O'Neal singers hold together a lot of the time, but lack color and sound unfinished under these expanded tempos. Nonetheless here we find a solid and touching perfomance of the "Alleluia".

        5 out of 5 stars speechless.......2001-06-09

When I was 16 years old, I sang "the last words of david", "alleluia", and "the peaceable kingdoms". Unless you really listen to the music, and the words, it won't capture you. It is one of the best peices I ever had the pleasure of singing. I highly recommend this cd, if you like beautiful harmonies and dark peices. It will give you goosebumps.
