About the Artist
"Wild Man Blues" is a solo jazz piano CD featuring new versions of pre-1920’s jazz piano styles, including stride, ragtime, and boogie-woogie. This is not a historically accurate recording. Entire strains are missing, melodies have been re-harmonized, and in a few cases the tunes have been juxtaposed on a rhythmic feel the composer would barely recognize. It is a loving attempt at synthesizing the styles of Joplin, Jelly Roll, and James P. Johnson, and moving them 70 or 80 years into the future in a loving and respectful fashion. Composer/pianist Scott Warner has amassed a wide range of experience in both the classical and jazz fields. He holds the Doctoral degree in Composition from the University of Michigan where he was teaching assistant to Pulitzer prize-winning composers Leslie Bassett and William Bolcom. For the composition of both classical and jazz music Mr. Warner has received grants and awards from The Minnesota, Michigan, and Iowa Councils for the Arts, The Jerome Foundation of Minneapolis, and many, many others. Most recently, Mr. Warner was commissioned to write a work for the internationally-renowned Eroica Trio, a group nominated for best classical Grammy in 2000.

As pianist, Scott Warner has performed on the concert stage and in the recording studio at the highest professional level in virtually every imaginable keyboard setting. At The University Michigan, Mr. Warner was pianist with both the New Music Ensemble and the Faculty Jazz Quartet. A member of the prestigious chamber music school of the Cleveland Orchestra, and for twenty-five years a regular piano recitalist, he now focuses primarily on jazz piano performance. In 1999 Mr. Warner was invited to perform a series of workshops in improvisation at the Moscow Conservatory in Russia. 2 out of 5 stars not to great.......2007-04-04

We were disappointed with this CD, but for the price I guess we can't expect much. I didn't care for the new style presentation of the songs. I like a more traditional rendering.

3 out of 5 stars Not so bad, 100 tunes for 4$.......2005-06-22

I red the comments of two other people who have bought this 4 CD BOX SET and it is not really so bad. I will even add that there are some excellent tunes. However, I must agree with the fact that few tunes seem to have been recorded 40 or 50 years ago, mainly when you hear the scratches of an old turntable but it is just 2 or 3 tunes. Furthermore, if you do not know American music, it is a good BOX SET to buy if you consider that you received 4 CD for 4$ including 100 tunes. On these 4 CD, I have heard some orchestration that I have never heard before and I consider that they are different but interesting. Any way, after hearing these 100 tunes, you will say to yourself that you like this tune, this other tune, this other tune and so on and you will be able to buy a more expensive CD with the tunes that you like. However, I have bought many CDs in the last few weeks and as you know, there are always some tunes that you like and some tunes that you do not like on every CD that you will buy. So, don't buy it at 25$ but at 4 or 5$ dollars, it is a very good choice for 100 tunes.

1 out of 5 stars You get what you pay for........2004-07-04

You get what you pay for. The singers put their own spin on the singing of each song. If you didn't hear the words you would not recognize some of them. Even some of the music sounds like a bad recording of music played on a turntable. Definitely not worth the price.

1 out of 5 stars Now I know why there were no song samples to listen to ..........2004-07-04

I wish this review had been here when I was thinking of purchasing it. I guess you get what you pay for. If you are thinking of buying this, you are better off recording your own CDs (or at least buying one that you can listen to a sampling of the songs). This album includes songs that were mere recordings of the songs playing on an old record player. It's almost so unbelievable that it is funny.

With this disc, Chanticleer, the internationally renowned, all-male 12-voice chamber choir, celebrates its 25th anniversary. Presenting songs from earlier albums plus one not previously recorded, the selection displays the group's remarkable stylistic and linguistic versatility, as well as all the qualities that have made it famous: the impeccable precision and intonation; the pristine tonal purity; the deep, inner expressiveness; the infinitely variable range of colors, textures, dynamics and moods; and the incredible vocal control that allows voices to stand out as well as to blend into a seamless, sonorous whole. Not for nothing has the group been called "an orchestra of voices" with its ability to sound like a big band in chordal passages and to imitate bass pizzicati as well as patter-songs and gospel shouts. The sopranos take off into stratospheric heights with florid coloratura; it is hard to believe that these are male voices. The program ranges from Gregorian chant and liturgical music of the 16th and 17th century, through traditional and jazz-influenced folk songs and spirituals (some in deplorably bad arrangements), to works by contemporary composers. Chanticleer's mostly vibrato-less vocal style still reflects its roots in its original Renaissance repertoire, but the way the singers use their voices in the popular, jazzy songs makes one aware of the evolving kinship between the two traditions. Though primarily an a capella ensemble, Chanticleer is occasionally joined by various instrumental groups, from period instrument orchestras to a jazz trio, and Dawn Upshaw adds her radiant, smiling, unmistakably "real" soprano to a delightful, high-spirited performance of a Spanish Carol. This disc is a fine, varied sampling of Chanticleer's discography and should inspire listeners to search out all the complete albums. --Edith Eisler

4 out of 5 stars My idea of heaven.......2007-02-17

If you liked Norman Luboff's Song's of the Sea's "Shenandoah", the price of this CD is worth it alone. That's why I ordered the CD. I heard Chanticleer's version and immediately ordered it. The rest is just the icing on the cake.

Then there is the one Kiri Tekanawa (sp?) offering, which is the only female voice on the recording.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful, but not quite the best of I had hoped.......2006-07-18

Some great material truly shines on this album, but I wsih that the group had been a little less populist in their choice of repertoire. There is a little too many arrangements and folk-like material, with the exception of the wonderful "Dulaman", and I would like to have heard some more varied repertoire. That said this is an excellent starting point for this amazing group.

5 out of 5 stars A treasury.......2005-11-06

As you can tell from the samples, the music here is amazing and covers a wide territory. It is less obvious that much of this is available on other CDs. I am confident, for example, that "We Shall Walk Through the Valley In Peace" is the same track that you will find on their phenomenal and highly recommended gospel collection, _Where the Sun Shall Never Go Down_, and I see a number of familiar-looking titles from other CDs. My advice is: if you're looking for a broad sample of the group's repertoire, then you can't go wrong here -- but if you've already got several Chanticleer albums, then you'll want to check your existing collection for potential duplications before buying this 'treasury.'

5 out of 5 stars Chanticleer: A Portrait.......2005-10-26

This is a marvelous singing group of all males with a little addition of Dawn Upshaw on a couple of pieces. They are thourally amazing at what they can sing with Male Voices usually unaccompanied. Obviously they have good strong Contra-Tenors that can manage the high notes without any problems. I would recommend this album to anyone who enjoys vocal music, unaccompanied and like Male Voices

2 out of 5 stars Quantity Over Quality.......2007-01-15

As a musician myself, I know too well that one of the most important ingredients in ANY performance (live or recorded) is passion. The recordings here generally lack the same passion and sheer drama of the originals. Much of the instrumentation has been reduced to a cheezy, thin, plastic synthesized replica. The performances are simply a watered-down lackluster version of the classic originals. If it were not for the sheer volume of tracks compiled here, I would have rated the comp only "one star".

3 out of 5 stars Mediocre.......2006-05-17

The sound quality for this collection isn't much better than the samples offered by Amazon.

4 out of 5 stars One Hundred Greatest TV Themes.......2005-08-06

I have watched almost all the shows that are on these 4 cd's. Many were made before I started watching TV. Most I've seen once or twice before.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty close to original recordings.......2005-07-24

Definitely not as good as the originals. You'll probably notice the slight differences since it's stuff you saw and listened to every week or everyday in reruns growing up, but it's still an amazing collection.

5 out of 5 stars Really Good Collection.......2004-07-11

I bought this in part because it had soundtracks to tv shows that are unavailable. My husband and I watch aome British programming. Many of the theme songs are for what seems like obscure British shows. That said; it has been enjoyable to hear music that I would normally never hear. Some music does sound tinny; some are very very rich, and some music is derived from actual preformances from the original artists. I think this is worth buying because is has a wonderful blend of music. The pieces are full soundtracks so they includes the parts of the theme song which are often edited out. I think the orchestra's who preformed the music did a great job. I have MonsterMania which redoes the soundtracks to the Godzilla movies. The interpretation is less heavy and stark than the preformance we associate with the original soundtrack; but I regard it as a new way to appreciate the music and all the componets which make the song unique.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful music!.......2003-05-26

I too bought this CD after seeing Woody play at the Cafe Carlyle, New York which was absolutely wonderful. This album captures the beauty and soaring tunes the band plays as well as the memorable mood of the evening. I urge everyone to buy this CD; this is true jazz at its best. I have played it over and over since buying it whilst the music remains in your heart and mind long after you switch off. The music soars, the songs are utterly happy yet also painfully sad at the same time. A real gem. Please make more of this music Woody and Eddie!

5 out of 5 stars Woody shares some soul.......2001-12-12

If you think New Orleans jazz is dated, peppy and thin, and that Woody Allen is nothing more than an eccentric celebrity filmmaker, buy this CD. Not only is the music fine and intelligent, but Woody shows us a side of him that his films don't capture. There's a sadness in the best pieces that goes beyond wistfulness, a beauty in unexpected places. Woody is serious about the music, but not preachy. The band and he make a lively, compelling, and thoughtful statement about music being one of the best aspects of existence.

First of all there are only two tracks on the CD that are in the film. Also the trombone player is different, as is the drummer. Never the less this is an excellent CD. I've been collecting traditional jazz records since 1937 and I don't normally like the New Orleans style but this band just clicks and I love it. Be prepared that out of 15 tracks, 8 are just a trio with clarinet, banjo and bass. I highly recommend the CD to any one that likes dixieland music.

5 out of 5 stars Another genius trait of Woody.......1999-11-19

Well. I admire Woody Allen as a Movie director, writter and Actor. This CD, is really "different" in the sense of the type of song, rhythm and his particular interpretation style. Just another positive aspect of "Woody"

5 out of 5 stars An excellent album/CD........1999-09-02

This is one of the best CD that I have ever collected. I thank Mr. Woody Allen, producer and arranger Mr. Eddy Davis and their group for giving us such a wonderfull album. Listining to this CD gave me the ultimate mind blowing experience and I consider this to be the one of the best CD that I have in my collection. At the begining I was almost addicted to this CD. I am a collector of jazz music for some time. But at one point, I realized that many of them are similar and frankly speaking, a bit monotonous too. Then this CD, Wild Man Blues has really enliven my enthusiasm for music again. These CD does not leave any question about Mr.Allen's musical spirit. My request to Mr. Allen, Mr. Davis and their New Orleans Jazz Band is to produce more CDs of this genre of New Orleans Jazz and of such caliber. You can be sure that I will collect that. I recommend anyone who loves music to collect this CD now.

Johnny Dodds was the most prominent and prolific of the great New Orleans clarinetists, a key voice in the music as it moved to Chicago in the early 1920s. This compilation spans his career, including early tracks on which he can be heard as an essential sideman with King Oliver, Louis Armstrong's Hot Five and Hot Seven, and Jelly Roll Morton. Rooted deeply in the blues, Dodds can even be heard with Blind Blake on the great blues-ragtime guitarist's "South Bound Rag." He can be heard as well in the varied groups that he led on record--usually including his brother, the gifted drummer Baby Dodds, who sometimes plays washboard. The version of "Wild Man Blues" heard here is by Dodds's Black Bottom Stompers with Louis Armstrong, and it makes an interesting contrast to Armstrong's own recording, with Dodds, of the same tune. Whether raw and expressive or fluently liquid, Dodds's clarinet is heard to ideal advantage on his trio versions of "Clarinet Wobble" and "Indigo Stomp." --Stuart Broomer

5 out of 5 stars WildMan Blues, Johnny Dodds.......2006-03-18

This is a really "wild" CD, and since this is the kind of music I listen to the most, it was a great addition to my collection. I play jazz clarinet and Johnny is someone I like to emulate.

5 out of 5 stars One of the all time great ones.......2003-12-15

Johnny Dodds is one of those rare musicians whose sound has been heard by millions, and yet few know them by name. Anyone familiar with Louis Armstrong's Hot Five and Seven recordings from the mid Twenties is familiar with Dodds' warm clarinet sound and perfect phrasing.
He had few competitors when it came to playing the blues or New Orleans rags. Only Sidney Bechet could match his swing and deep feeling of the music. Bechet had much more charisma and thus became much more popular.
But for me there is no substitute for Dodds when it comes to playing honest and exciting New Orleans jazz. Armstrong made no mistake when he made him his regular sideman.

This is a very good compilation of Johnny Dodds' music. It has a few tracks with Armstrongs, others in a trio format and a balanced spread of blues and rags. And because Johnny Dodds is one of the greatest musicians to have played jazz, this compilation belongs in every music collection.
