Once Chet Baker arrived in California from his native Oklahoma, his career exploded. After landing gigs with Charlie Parker and Gerry Mulligan, Baker soon found himself a solo star and bandleader. Not long after that, he also found himself whispering love songs into a microphone. Baker was not gifted with the most robust voice of the day. Indeed, listening to pure singers like Nat "King" Cole or Johnny Hartman can expose Baker's weaknesses, but what Baker did, he did well. By choosing wistful, so-young, so-in-love tunes, Baker was able to pour his heart into the material, sketching soft, romantic moods and painting himself as the broken-hearted innocent. The effect can be devastating, as Baker's voice clings to the melody, threatening to disintegrate at any moment. Many of his best tunes--"I Fall in Love Too Easily," "But Not for Me," "Let's Get Lost"--are collected here, and as such, there is no better place to begin an appreciation of Baker's unique singing. --S. Duda

There's this kid who worked for me some 40 years ago. i said "Chet Baker is in town. if you dont go hear him, you're fired," he's still thanking me. Chet Baker SINGS...and alot better than most. and thats HIM in the background PLAYING. WOW! Parker came back from the coast after playing with Chetty for a few weeks. he says to Miles, "theres a white boy out there who's going to blow you away." Chet has been blowing & singing some of the Best ever since!!! buy this or you're fired.
WhAt'S "TeChNiCaL StAnDpOiNt"? .......2006-11-09
Technical standpoint? Is that how you listen to music? Sorry. I have no idea as to "technical standpoint". The music makes me feel alive and it makes me feel good, as a bohemian should. Chet baker has over 60 albums and has remained popular for over 50 years. I doubt if anything "heard in local clubs" will ever leave a legacy close to Mr. Baker's. An acquired taste? I was hooked in the first thirty seconds of the first Chet Baker song I ever heard and I've yet to hear anything he has done to change my mind. Most folks I know that like Chet Baker feel the same. Stop thinking and listen, this music is life at its best.
The place to start, and to come back to.......2006-08-06
Over years of listening to jazz, this is the album I most often return to. It has absolutely everything: great songs (some of the greatest). A spectacular voice unlike Frank's or Ella's or Sarah's or anyone's--a voice that's all things to all people. (Whatever you want to hear in Baker's voice--depth, surface, warmth, detachment, male, female, and just about any other pairing of opposites--is right there for the taking.) You get ballads and lilting uptempos. Accessibility (this is not music to struggle to enjoy.) Innocence and experience. Summer-afternoon arrangements to float you away. A brilliant trumpet soloist (who was, however unlikely, the same guy as the amazing vocalist). Melody and improvisation.... If I were introducing a newbie to jazz, this is the album I'd start with. Then, after you listen to a thousand others, play Chet singing again and realize: this one tops them all. How did Baker do it? He probably shouldn't have been able to, given the way he lived lived--and that too feels like a piece of this recording's pleasure.
excellent.......2006-07-06
excellent performances by chet baker. his voice is unique and is highly recommended to all jazz lovers. It is so rare to find so many songs by chet baker in one collection and here are some wonderful songsby a wonderful jaxx singer and player.
Acquired Taste.......2006-03-26
People are a bit too crazy with all the 5 star reviews. From a technical standpoint, he is a pretty poor vocalist. Most of the jazz vocals I have heard in local clubs are better than Chet and as for more widely known, recorded artists, they all leave Chet in the dust. Of course, technical skill is not the whole thing. Certain vocalists have a way of singing that resonates with some people. Chet is one of those kinds of singers. It is certainly possible to love his singing, but for many people, it would be an acquired taste. For those who really put a lot of emphasis on technical skills, it is unlikely that they will ever be able to deal with Chet the singer.

With 20 originals from Louis Jordan's '40s and early '50s heyday at Decca Records, Best Of is the definitive collection of the blues-jazz bandleader-singer's work. Most of the cuts are up-tempo jumpers with lyrics that tell sly tales of the black experience in midcentury: the house-partiers in "Saturday Night Fish Fry" end up in the slam, while the institution of marriage occasions a warning in "Beware." Jordan also dabbled in Latin and Brazilian rhythms on "Run Joe" and "Early in the Morning," and even added a major ballad, "Don't Let the Sun Catch You Cryin'," to the standard repertoire. A major influence on Ray Charles, James Brown, and Chuck Berry, Jordan is a must-hear. --Rickey Wright
Customer Reviews:
As hip today as it was then.......2007-05-13
This collection truly gives insight into the beginnings of Rock 'N Roll. Sassy, big grooves, rockin' and swingin'. Great sax solos. A must-have for a true collection.
The Best of Louis Jordan.......2007-03-28
No wonder he influenced a lot of musicians; Ray Charles, James Brown, Little Richard and many more. Not only is the man a excellent musician, he's also an excellent entertainer. His music is rocking and has a story line.
The Best of Loius Jordan.......2007-01-12
I bought this as a gift for my Dad. He's been looking for the song "Beans and Cornbread" for as far back as I can remember. He loves this CD and keeps it in his shop to listen to whenever he's out there.
Over The Legal Limit For Fun.......2006-04-28
Just do yourself a favor and get it. With 20 stone-cold winners lined up shoulder-to-shoulder, this is not just the best Louis Jordan anthology available, it delivers more jubilation for the buck than just about anything in the Amazon jungle.
"Serious" students of pop music use the word "important" when describing Jordan, a word that always makes me think I am about to encounter something boring that will remind me of medicine. Yes, he was one of the originators of rock & roll. Yes, he was a breakthrough crossover artist who appealed to black and white audiences alike. Yes, he created a distinctive style that used singing/talking in place of an instrument, influencing ersatz practitioners to come. And yes, he used "coded" lyrics that were extremely funny, and salty at times, to cover material that simply never got aired in those days. All well and good. But the net on Louis Jordan is that he is a party waiting to happen; put this CD on and in no time at all you'll find yourself laughing, dancing, and feeling better about life.
Whether on sax, vocals, as a writer, or bandleader, Louis Jordan cooks. Saturday Night Fish Fry is a rockin' classic with a story to tell, as are Beans and Cornbread, Five Guys Named Moe, and Choo Choo Ch'Boogie. Ain't Nobody Here But Us Chickens is a riot, a splendid piece of political incorrectness that uses code to have a little fun (a lot of fun) at the white man's expense. The source is a very old, racist joke that Jordan simply turns on its head and returns with a smile. Caledonia, another foot stomper, is equally irreverent and delightful.
Jordan also shows off his smooth, lady-killer crooning chops on tracks like Blue Light Boogie and Early In The Mornin' - nice. So jump on in, the water's fine. If you want to be wowed by what a pioneering influence he was, that's great. But don't miss out on the real point of Louis Jordan - this cat is over the legal limit for fun.
not a loser in the bunch.......2006-02-08
from the 1st to the last song; all are tremendous...this is the way to make a CD...and that was the way to be an entertainer...

More fun with every listening..........2007-06-29
This CD gives us 14 relatively short tunes, featuring the baritone sax of Mulligan and the trumpet (sans vocals) of Baker, recorded in 1952-53, and one reunion effort from 1957. The first five, from '52, are the least interesting. It seems to me it took Gerry and Chet a half-year to figure out how to play together and separately, what arrangements worked best for their piano-less quartet, and what songs inspired both of them to blow their best. Then comes nine performances from 1953 which are uniformly wonderful, especially the more familiar songs such as "Makin' Whoopee" and "My Old Flame", "Love Me or Leave Me" and "Darn That Dream" and of course, "My Funny Valentine" which went on to be Chet's theme song of sorts. While I have other Baker CD's I like even better, this one rewards repeat plays. I only own one other Mulligan disc, "Two of a Kind" with Paul Desmond, and that one, a studio project which does not work out totally well, does not show off Gerry quite like his own quartet did. If you are a fan of classic jazz, this represents the early '50's West Coast Cool Jazz category quite well.
Maybe the (sorry) essental jazz cd of the Fifties.......2004-07-26
I had been a Baker fan for a few years, and liked GM too, but in my ignorance, I'd never lighted upon this cd until reading James Gavin's wonderful (Deep in a Dream) Baker biography. How one of the most despicable characters in music history could have made such beautiful music is beyond me (and, as he admits, beyond Gavin, too), but by god: Chet Baker had an extraordinary gift which, when combined with the enormous talents of his fellow heroin-addict Mulligan, created a spectacular collaboration on this once-in-a-lifetime cd.
When you read in Gavin's book about the trials and tribulations that Mulligan/Baker were going through in LA as these tracks were being laid down -- Mulligan's conviction and incarceration for possession, remember, ended the quartet's existence, although Chet Baker would make up for not-so-lost time with long stretches in the slammer himself in the years ahead -- it is utterly remarkable that these two lost-in-space cadets got together long enough to do something this remarkable!
If there is a better rendition of Valentine, anywhere, please let me know. In the meantime, Mulligan w/Baker may be the single most essential Fifties jazz cd any novice to the field must buy -- and buy now.
This was where Baker, btw, cut his Funny Valentine chops -- he recorded, methinks, thirty or so versions, at least, of his signature piece -- and anyone who can listen to the magnificent interplay on this cd between two of the greatest of jazz greats who, in 1952-54, had no idea either of them was going anywhere, besides to prison, will make strong men crumble, women weep, and children stand up and pay attention.... k
If you only invest in one Mulligan/Baker album . . ........2001-12-17
. . . this is THE one.
Frankly, it's hard to imagine a partnership of two individuals less likely to succeed: Mulligan, New York-raised, formally trained, tall, fair-haired, his theoretician's instincts already refined by years in several influential late-40s big bands and a successful collaboration with Gil Evans/Miles Davis; Baker, on the other hand, a man who would come to be termed "jazz's 'dark angel," southwest-born and bred, largely self-taught and instinctive in his approach to music, a "problem child" virtually from birth.
The traits they shared were largely negative: histories of drug abuse and an inability to deal with their "inner demons," lousy tempers, and an incredible talent for fatally sabotaging their personal relationships, intellectual impatience versus an inbred inferiority complex. Even their "instrumental philosophies" were at variance; Mulligan was prone to treat his baritone sax almost as a tenor -- or even alto -- in his approach, while Chet Baker consistently seemed to eschew the arrogant brassiness of most trumpeters of his (or, for that matter, the current) era.
Try to imagine these guys "hanging out" together, or -- a bold leap of imagination -- at a barbecue with their families of the moment. Never mind; it never happened.
What did happen -- thankfully -- is that, for eleven months in the early '50s, playing night after night at The Haig in L.A., Gerry Mulligan and Chet Baker found common cause -- a lingua franca -- in the music they made together, and in the sound they helped to develop (the so-called "West Coast" or "cool jazz" school), as here memorialized in a selection of remasterings from original Pacific Jazz 78 rpm singles.
There's a very obvious dynamic presented in the selections herein: That, whatever their relationship may have otherwise been (and by all accounts it was, to say the least, rancorous), as soon as they hit the bandstand -- or the recording studio -- they gave themselves over to the music and found themselves uncannily on the same wavelength. The pull of this common wavelength, by the way, is demonstrated in this collection by the inclusion of "Festive Minor," which they performed together at an abortive 'reunion' six or so years after they had gone their separate ways; nonetheless, it shows that they were still capable of finding that common language. And celebrating together.
If you're unfamiliar with the "Gerry Mulligan Quartet Featuring Chet Baker" (as they were originally billed), particularly if your interest was only recently sparked by a couple of selections from "L.A. Confidential" (both of which --"The Lady Is A Tramp" and "Makin' Whoopee" -- are featured here), this is the CD to start with. Your investment's minimal, the rewards will be great. PLUS . . . if you never go on to pick up the other two Mulligan/Baker CDs currently available (although I suspect you will), you'll still have a solid understanding of their collaboration and its contribution to jazz.
Classical recordings; essential listening for the jazz-fan.......2001-09-25
It is difficult to imagine a serious collection of jazz recordings in which this quartet is not represented. The only quarrel one might have with this CD is that it is not as complete as one would like - but it is, nonetheless, representative, and the music remains irresistibly attractive: fresh, melodious, engaging, original (not least in its orchestration). As Mulligan himself was the first to admit, the idea of a jazz band without piano was not, by itself, new. But the way THIS band was composed and worked certainly WAS new. The interplay between Mulligan and Baker was highly successful, and "made up" for what to some might seem an odd "omission" of a piano, as the baritone and trumpet were very much used as two beautifully interwoven voices. The overall effect was highly spontaneous and inspirational, though these days one would like to hear longer solos (which could not, then, be provided.) Both Mulligan and Baker played great improvised solos, even if short; Baker was probably never more appealing to listen to than in those early years, whether lyrical or crisply fiery, though he still produced good music afterwards. Mulligan changed - in particular, grew more "robust" and venturesome in later years - but did not necessarily play better than he does on these tracks. The other musicians provided excellent backing. This music will not date, even though it is clearly of its time - indeed, provided a milestone, and a sensation, when it was first released.
Doing good.......2000-04-29
This album, containing some of the most well-known Mulligan/Baker numbers, sure is doing good. The spontaneous music created by these two extremely gifted men is so timeless and has such a great deal of classic elegance, many people appreciate that, and there seems to be a bit of a sales boom for their music at the beginning of this new millenium.
Respect is due for these two forefathers of the Cool Jazz movement, and there is nothing bad to say about this album. But if I was going to buy only one album by the Mulligan/Baker quartet, it wouldn't be this one, but the Gerry Mulligan - The Original Quartet With Chet Baker (2CD), where the music is just as fine, and there is more than twice as much of it!

AAAAHHHH......LIKE A BREATH OF FRESH AIR.......2005-10-27
FINALLY US OLD HEADS GET A CHANCE TO REMEMBER WHAT REAL HIP-HOP IS LIKE. IN THE ERA OF THE BLING, MUCH OF THE ART OF STRAIGHT RHYMING HAS BEEN LOST, BUT YET-THERE ARE THOSE FEW- LIKE AN OASIS ON THE HORIZON-WHO CAN TAKE US BACK TO WHAT RAP WAS INTENED TO BE. FROM THE SMOKY-VOICED LEADERSHIP OF GRAND PUBA TO THE LAID BACK SADAT AND LORD JAMAR COMES THE ESSENCE OF THE GAME. WHEN WE WERE HUNGRY TO FIND OUR RIGHTFUL PLACE IN HISTORY AND THE BOOKS WOULDN'T TAKE US, THEY GAVE US A TASTE OF WHAT IT FELT LIKE TO THINK OF OURSELVES AS GODS AND GODESSES...SO MUCH OF WHAT WE COULD USE A DOSE OF TODAY...DON'T LET IT GO TO YOUR HEAD....
"Classic East Coast Flavor"!.......2005-09-02
Back in '89, when I first heard Brand Nubians droppin' science, I knew these guys were gonna' be a force to be reckoned with in the Hip-Hop world. First off, the Brand Nu's are ill MC's! Each one, with their unique, yet compatible styles. Both of their '89 classic singles are included in this compilation and those are; "Brand Nubians" the classic, obscure single breaking down the whole science behind their names and opening your third eye to the whole esoterics and doctrines of the 5% Nation of Islam. And the funky, feel good "FEELS SO GOOD" a bouncy, party track. The rest are classics, as to expect anything less from the Brand Nu's. All the hits are here from their first release (back when it was the original 3). And the classics that they dropped when Grand Puba went on his solo mission. Also, some of Grand Puba's solo material is present, as well. Brand Nubians been putting it down from the conscious era to the Boom-Bap era. True Hip-Hop vets and this is their best of. Classic East Coast sh*t!!
Essential Purchase.......2003-10-26
Brand Nubian were one of the essential NY hip hop groups of the early 90s. Make no mistake - they were opportunists. When it suited them to have a conscience on the first album, they rapped "I wanted to be violent but I'm a lover of black mothers/and black mothers need sons/not children that've been killed by guns." Of course, by the time the next album came out it was all about the gangsta. Hence: "Pass Me The Gat/I gotta fight back/I ain't rollin' over on my MF-in' back". (yawn).
In any case, make no mistake, all that aside, this group WAS great. Puba, Sadat X, and Lord Jamar each had very distinctive styles and were great rappers (Puba the best, obviously) and the beats were usually great.
It's easy to nitpick over song selection though: You only needed the LP version of "Slow Down" and could have left off the horrible "Feels So Good" and mediocore "Allah Akbar". If you like this album and want to check out more, check out "Concerto In X Minor", "The Godz Must Be Crazy" and "Pass The Gat" from the Brand Nubes and "Ya Know How It Goes", "Who Makes The Loot?", "I Like It", and "Soul Controller" from Puba's albums.
If You Like Tribe Called Quest and Melodic, Slammin' hip-hop.......2003-01-04
Tribe's one of my all-time favorites because I love the wordplay and the sheer musicality of it (as opposed to harsh MCs over hook-free tracks or super-sellout bling-blingers rappin' over a Neptunes track).
This album just absolutely kicks. The lyrics are there, the beats are there, the hooks are there... what more could you ask for? I'd put it up there with the aforementioned Tribe and other classic acts like De la Soul.
a potential underground classic. if you don't have'm all.......2001-11-16
Tribe Called Quest?...nope! E.P.M.D.... no! Sonny & Cher.... hell no!...Brand Nubian was the group that broke my heart when they broke up to go solo. One just didn't work for me without the other. Grand Pupa put out a few nice tracks but never a solid CD and the same for the other half of Brand Nubian. This CD takes all of their great gems and pack them into one phat, blazing CD. This crew brought "knowledge of self" to the hip-hop game along with Grand Puba's claim of putting "Tommy Hilfiger" in the hip-hop main stream.....anyway....This CD also includes some of the hard to find remixes that were not included on the original releases. My gems are: "Drop The Bomb", "Wake Up (Reprise In The Sunshine)", "Slow Down (Pete Rock's Newromix)", "360 Degrees (What Goes Around)", "Don't Let It Go To Your Head", "Punks Jump Up To Get Beat Down (Remix featuring Diamond D)", "Love Me Or Leave Me Alone" and a few others. Not all my favorites are here but still a gem to have. This CD is a must for any fan of Brand Nubian.

Pretty good hits collection - possibly 4.5 stars.......2006-12-31
Like all Best of albums there's gonna be some songs some people don't like and some good one's that were omitted ("The Main Ingredient" is this case). With 16 songs you get some of their better works from, "All Souled Out", "Mecca & The Soul Brother", and "The Main Ingredient" with trax from the "Menace II Society" & "Poetic Justice" soundtracks and one form Pete Rock's 1998 "Soul Survivor" album. Pete Rock does all the producing and has 2 solo's (the only 2 songs he raps on). There is no doubt he can produce and has his signature sound is probably one of the best producers ever. CL Smooth raps on 14 of the songs and his smooth voice fits great over Pete's horn filled and sampled beats. Of the 16 songs, 1 is a classic, 4 are ok, and the other 11 are good and mostly real good songs. A must have from one of the best rap duo's in history.

Pete Rock and C L Smooth 'Take You There' With Hits Collections.......2006-03-09
Pete Rock and C.L. Smooth never had a lot of commercial success, but one thing can be said about them: they stayed true to the game. Putting out quality material throughout the 90s, the duo epitomized the sound of East Coast music for many hip-hop heads. Putting out classics like "They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y.)," "I Got A Love," "Lots Of Lovin'" "Take You There," "Mecca And The Soul Brother," "One In A Million," and "Straighten It Out," The Best of Pete Rock and C. L. Smooth delivers both the commercially-released hits and the album track gems that most of their fans have come to love. Many die hard fans already have everything on this disc. But for those youngsters who are just learning about the group, The Best of Pete Rock and C. L. Smooth gives you a good overview of their best selections.
The best rap duo of all time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2005-10-29
Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth are the best rap duo ever, especially their first 3 albums (All Souled Out, Mecca And The Soul Brother & The Main Indregident/Which I owned all 3) For this album, you should've add these tracks to this album(The Basement, Escape, The Main Indriegent, In The Flesh & The Creator/my personal favorites)! You really need to buy those three albums, seriously! It's really worth it! Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth need to make more albums & get back into the rap game! We need more music from you both!
5 stars but get the albums instead.......2005-08-25
This kind of sounds like a little bit of industry rule #4,080 to me (Rhino Records?) but this disc contains a lot of their classic material. But, coming from a guy who claims that PR+CLS might be the best hip hop duo ever, I always had a problem with a "Best Of" album because their three albums, "All Souled Out", "Mecca and the Soul Brother", and "The Main Ingredient" were kind of best of compilations in themselves. As demonstrated on their "Rare Tracks" set, Pete and CL were so particular about what went onto their albums and fit with the flow that some good cuts were even cut off their albums. The only reason a real Pete Rock & CL Smooth fan would get this is for completeness, because it has a few tracks from the "Poetic Justice" and "Menace II Society" soundtracks and a song from Pete's original "Soul Survivor" album. I also kind of find the tracklisting questionable. Almost all the songs from "All Souled Out" (a six song EP) are included. It doesn't really span their careers properly, I don't think. They include songs like "Searching", a fine song by all means but not their best, and omit "The Main Ingredient" and "If It Ain't Rough It Ain't Right". Bottomline, buy the albums before this, because every song on the three albums combined is amazing, I say that "Mecca and the Soul Brother" and "The Main Ingredient" are the best hip hop LPs ever. This is still 5 stars, because hey, it's Pete Rock and CL Smooth, but buy the albums instead.
CL Smooth "American Me" EP coming late 2005/early 2006, Shaman Work Records.
Yes....Classic Material But.............2005-02-17
"Good Life" features some great tracks, including a couple of rare soundtrack joints, but its simply not sufficient for true fans, since it is merely culled material from their two albums and EP. Purchase the albums instead and indulge...rather than gratify the record label by buying this instead.
For the uninitiated however, a definite and accurate estimation of the greatness of Pete Rock and CL Smooth.

The white trumpet contender respect Miles Davis!.......2006-01-06
The story of the Jazz in the Fifties certainly would be remain unfinished without the ominous presence of this outstanding virtuoso. Baker sound still possesses this alluring hook, this magnetic engagement charm, eloquent expressiveness, enrapturing lyricism and contagious rhythm, despite the elapsed time, which confirms by itself the status of his musicianship.
This selection is jus a little sample of the broad universe of his genius. A well thought selection of great musical successes, available, preserved and immortalized by the Digital Technology for our future enjoyment.
Absolutely indispensable in your treasured collection.

welcome to Kansas City.......2005-07-08
Along with Big Joe Turner, Jimmy Rushing is the classic Blues shouter. He was fortunate enough to have the Count Basie Orchestra backing him. These are some of his best cuts with Basie at an incredibly low price. If you're not familiar with Kansas City blues or Jimmy Rushing, this is the placce to start.
18 prime vocals by Rushing with the Basie swing band!.......2004-12-17
This is essntial music at a rediculously low price! These are the seminal sides by Rushing and Basie. Rushing is the quintessential male jazz singer. Rushing is so smooth and yet rough glidig atop Basie's roaring band. Some classics include
Sent For You Yesturday, Jimmy's Blues, Boogie Blues, Take Me Back Baby, and Outskirts of Town. All classic swing vocals!

"The Hip-Hop Masters!".......2007-02-11
Gang-Starr is as Hip-Hop as Hip-Hop can get. Since the 80's, they've put out hit after hit after hit. This is an excellent CD/DVD collection, superior sound quality and a decent video selection, although it could've been better. Missing from this CD/DVD compilation are the classic videos and songs that made everybody love Brooklyn's favorite transplants and claim them as our own. The videos also have an excessive and at times ridiculous blurring of logos. despite the obvious omissions of their more clssic material, it still is a very good collection to own.
