5 out of 5 stars Awesome to hear the old masters almost live........2007-03-27

It was an awesome experience to hear Ragtime and early blues played by the masters themselves. When you hear the music from their own hands, if not their own pianos, it makes the music immediate, and makes even clearer the stylistic differences of the various American musical pioneers. The sound quality is excellent. I'd strongly recommend this recording to anyone who enjoys early-20th-century jazz.

5 out of 5 stars The Greatest Ragtime of the Century.......2005-10-30

What a terrific CD. What a joy to add to your life. Everyone should begin their day with this Great Ragtime. We would all be much better.

As a former dancer, Flapper, wth the Charleston in my routine, I do appreciate Great Music. I'm not quite as good as I used to be, but neither are you, Gal. Will be 66 next birthday. Still have the rhythm and love life.

Put some spice in your life and don't let this CD get away. Please, just get it today.

5 out of 5 stars A great introduction and sampling........2005-08-23

Prior to this album, the only ragtime I really knew was "The Entertainer" and "Maple Leaf Rag". I don't know how this album fares for enthusiasts, but I've thoroughly enjoyed it. It introduced me to several different composers. The way the album is organized by giving you a two or three song block by each composer is good. As you listen to this, you can easily hear the different styles from one composer to another. As for the recording quality, I don't have any complaints whatsoever. Each note is clear without much noticable fuzz or hissing. The versions of Scott Joplin's songs are played a bit brash and speedy when compared to Joshua Rifkin, but I think they sound livlier because of it. Overall a solid release.

2 out of 5 stars not to great.......2007-04-04

We were disappointed with this CD, but for the price I guess we can't expect much. I didn't care for the new style presentation of the songs. I like a more traditional rendering.

3 out of 5 stars Not so bad, 100 tunes for 4$.......2005-06-22

I red the comments of two other people who have bought this 4 CD BOX SET and it is not really so bad. I will even add that there are some excellent tunes. However, I must agree with the fact that few tunes seem to have been recorded 40 or 50 years ago, mainly when you hear the scratches of an old turntable but it is just 2 or 3 tunes. Furthermore, if you do not know American music, it is a good BOX SET to buy if you consider that you received 4 CD for 4$ including 100 tunes. On these 4 CD, I have heard some orchestration that I have never heard before and I consider that they are different but interesting. Any way, after hearing these 100 tunes, you will say to yourself that you like this tune, this other tune, this other tune and so on and you will be able to buy a more expensive CD with the tunes that you like. However, I have bought many CDs in the last few weeks and as you know, there are always some tunes that you like and some tunes that you do not like on every CD that you will buy. So, don't buy it at 25$ but at 4 or 5$ dollars, it is a very good choice for 100 tunes.

1 out of 5 stars You get what you pay for........2004-07-04

You get what you pay for. The singers put their own spin on the singing of each song. If you didn't hear the words you would not recognize some of them. Even some of the music sounds like a bad recording of music played on a turntable. Definitely not worth the price.

1 out of 5 stars Now I know why there were no song samples to listen to ..........2004-07-04

I wish this review had been here when I was thinking of purchasing it. I guess you get what you pay for. If you are thinking of buying this, you are better off recording your own CDs (or at least buying one that you can listen to a sampling of the songs). This album includes songs that were mere recordings of the songs playing on an old record player. It's almost so unbelievable that it is funny.

3 out of 5 stars A piece of history.......2006-06-03

Many of the songs on this recording are not available in sheet music, and although the sound quality isn't "leading edge" it makes me feel as though I am listening to actual performers back in the 30's & 40's, with young and gifted singers like Frank Sinatra, Jo Stafford, and Mel Torme, as well as others who are nameless or unknown to me on this album, and a delight to listen to. Manhattan Tower is why I bought this CD, and I got so much more from it than I bargained for. The illusion I have when I play it is that I am a young jazz artist in New York, feeling the pulse of the city and filling up with everything about being a part of New York.

1 out of 5 stars A BIG disappointment!.......2004-08-19

I bought this CD for the Slaughter on Tenth Avenue soundtrack ballet by Richard Rodgers and Lennie Hayton. But none of the tracks on this CD can be appreciated. It is a mono recording, and that immediately leaves you with a very incomplete sound. No amount of treble and bass adjustment can eliminate the awful tinny sound throughout the disc.

4 out of 5 stars Got to like it.......2007-02-01

When I heard samples from this CD, I really wanted to get it. However, when I did and listened the full versions I did not seem to like them that much. There are several pices that I totally do not care for, a few I really like (especially, Bach's pieces), and some I got used to. Overall, I like the CD, but not as much as I though I would.

5 out of 5 stars A gleaming vision of brass sound.......2005-10-18

The Canadian Brass have been a lively and fun force in music for decades, since being brought together in Toronto 'by a gleaming vision of brass sound'. They are now world famous, having delighted and dazzled people in concerts all over the globe. One of the problems for a group such as this is the lack of repertoire readily available, so the group has become expert at arranging pieces for other instruments for their ensemble. They have also commissioned a good number of pieces of their performance.

One such commission is found on this recording, entitled 'The Well-Tampered Bach', a take-off on the Bach work 'The Well-Tempered Clavier'. This is a setting of various pieces by J.S. Bach for brass quintet and drums, worked by Luther Henderson for the ensemble's 1985 appearance in Toronto. Henderson is a frequent arranger and composer for the Canadian Brass, having also put together the 'Tuba Tiger Rag', reminiscent of the World War I era, and jazz pieces like 'Beale Street Blues'.

More traditional composers are represented in arrangement for brass, such as a more standard arrangement for Bach's Fugue in G minor, Mozart's Turkish Rondon, and pieces from Gabrieli, Vivaldi, Strauss, Rossini, Rimsky-Korsakov, and Pachelbel.

The disc has a wonderful blend of pieces classical and modern, 'proper' composition and traditional/folk inspiration, and a very lively and powerful presentation of all the music.

5 out of 5 stars wow.......2001-07-20

This CD is amazing. It's a shame more people don't know about this incredible group. I'm a brass player and I just learned of these guys a few months ago. If you like classical music or brass music, this is a must own!

5 out of 5 stars Essential CD.......2000-12-12

If you like the sound of brass and if your tastes run the gamut from Gabrieli to Handy, with stops hither and yon, this CD is essential to your collection. In it, the Canadian Brass demonstrate their amazing ability to play the early Baroque masters right along side the early jazz masters -- and make it seem perfectly natural! In the process, a bit of Rimsky-Korsakov, Mozart and Lord knows what gets thrown in for good measure. Plus, they play a rousing rendition of Bach's "Little Fugue in G Minor." If the music on this CD doesn't get you going, you need to immediately go to the ER at the nearest hospital!

5 out of 5 stars The Best "Best of" the Canadian Brass.......1999-10-26

If you buy one Canadian Brass CD, buy this one. It contains the widest variety of musical eras and styles. Our favorite CB song, Beale Street Blues is hard to find, but on this CD. There are serious, classical selections and fun songs such as the "Tuba Tiger Rag" and "Flight of the Tuba Bee". This is Brass Quintet music at its best!

William Bolcom is my kind of musician. He writes music that is sometimes adventurous but always based in a recognizable American idiom. And he's a terrific ragtime pianist, the best Joplin player I've heard. With these credentials, of course he's a wonderful Gershwin player. These are the best piano performances of Gershwin I know. After you hear those, Bolcom joins his wife Joan Morris for very flavorful versions of 10 George and Ira Gershwin songs. The whole disc is a delight, and the original analog recordings still sound fine. Highly recommended to all Gershwin lovers. --Leslie Gerber

    3 out of 5 stars Peculiar.......2005-01-26

I can see how someone might enjoy this album. William Bolcom is a top-flight pianist and the idea of playing the tunes as George Gershwin played them at parties is intriguing.

Because my ear is used to it, I guess, I would like to have heard longer performances of fewer songs. Each one sounded to me like a snippet -- over too soon. Because of that, plus the fact that I'm not a fan of Joan Morris' showy voice, I give the album one thumb up.

5 out of 5 stars Gershwin Never Sounded Better!.......2002-06-25

This is a fantastic CD! Back in the 70's, pianist William Bolcom and his singer wife Joan Morris made a delightful series of albums on the Nonesuch label of old songs from the first half of the twentieth century - just glorious voice backed by brilliant piano. As Ira Gershwin might say - who could ask for anything more? The music is not only beautifully performed, you can hear the joy of the performance in every note. And Bolcom and Morris were never better than when doing Gershwin.

A combination of two albums, the first part of this CD is all piano. The Gershwin Songbook consists of brief (some under a minute) versions of some of his more popular songs in the way that Gershwin himself famously played them at parties. They demonstrate that Gershwin was as gifted a pianist as he was a composer. The other instrumental tracks are some of Gershwin's solo piano pieces, including the wonderful Rialto Ripples, a rag written when he was just seventeen. For me, the pinnacle of both Gershwin's and William Bolcom's artistry is reached on the second of the three preludes - a classic study of a bluesy mood.

Just when you think things can't get any better, Joan Morris arrives. She effortlessly sings and swings her way through ten of Gershwin's best songs from the cheeky comedy of By Strauss to the smoky moodiness of Someone To Watch Over Me. Maybe I'm just an incurable old romantic, but the ballads are the best of all.

No Gershwin collection can be complete without this CD. Now if only I could find a copy of that Bolcom/Morris song about Humphrey Bogart...

5 out of 5 stars One of America's great songwriters.......2001-03-09

Amid the Cole Porters, Irving Berlins and George Gershwins of the world, Harold Arlen tends to be forgotten. And yet, when the greatest song of the 20th century was recently voted on by a distinguished panel of critics, whose song came out on top? Mr. Arlen's (Over the Rainbow). Here is a superb cross section of Harold Arlen songs by a cast ranging from Judy Garland to Bing Crosby to Ethel Waters, spanning decades and spanning a wide range of styles, from jazz to ballads, poignant to funny. Although the sound is not ideal, as many of the recordings date from the 30's and Pearl's objective in remastering has always been to achieve the fullest musical sound rather than to reduce surface noise, this is a minor complaint given the rich and mind-opening selection of great music found here.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful, Accessible and Packed with Music.......2004-05-02

I'm usually not a huge fan of the last five decades or so of musical composition -- too much cacophany and obscurity, as if any sort of recognizable theme were a thought crime. This album has helped me grow more comfortable with several composers I did not previously appreciate. It's not easy music, but it's a wonderful, relaxing, and quite melodic listening experience rather than an intellectual exercise. Some pieces, such as the Eldin Burton Sonatina, are now among my favorites.

As an added bonus, this is a long CD -- 20 pieces, taking up 1.3 hours to be exact. So you get a lot for your investment. There's bound to be something in there you like.

This CD is beautiful and haunting! I highly recomend it. It is very relaxing. I found this CD here on Amazon by accident, and ended up ordering it after I listened to the sample songs. Order it! It's great! :)

5 out of 5 stars A Duet Made in Heaven.......2007-03-01

By the time that Blues for Two had been recorded, Joe Pass had made a reputation as an outstanding solo guitarist (Virtuoso) and accompanist of Ella Fitzgerald. This is a rare opportunity for him to interact with the swinging, melodic and inventive Zoot Sims. While Pass indicates in the liner notes that he isn't much of a "four-to-the-bar" accompanist, in truth he is fantastic here, playing around, under and with Zoot as well as spinning his own stories when it's his turn to solo.

The slower-tempo'd songs (Dindi, Forgot to Remember, for example) are beautiful, sensuous examples that real jazz can be musical and inventive at the same time. This is a must-have.

5 out of 5 stars Two of the Best.......2002-01-16

Did Joe Pass ever miss a note? Did Zoot Sims ever stop swinging?Zoot on the sax, Joe on the guitar--the result is one of those recordings that you just have to keep, even if you periodically go through your collection and weed out some of cd's that, well, don't get too much action, too much air time in your house. Some were constantly played when you got them, but, after a while, don't have the immediacy of new purchases or the timelessness of classic recordings.

Two for the Blues is a keeper. A simple concept--two artists feeding off one another's genius--yields wondrous results, and each new playing allows you to find something new to delight in. Pass, of course, with his Virtuoso recordings, made it clear that the guitar was as capable as any instrument of creating true jazz, so it isn't surprising to hear his solos on many of the cuts--Zoot sits down and turns the studio over to Pass.

At other times, they accompany each other, one moving to the background while the other takes the lead. Zoot swings, while Pass comps in the backseat; Pass plucks out some of those crystal lines of his, while Zoot meanders through the melody. Each is respectful of the other, generous with the other, but nothing here is formal or stilted. The tunes just flow.

Listen to Pennies from Heaven, all 7:39 of it. It doesn't seem that this melody would fit on a recording called Blues for Two, but these guys recreate this chestnut. The melody line is distinct in the first thirty or so seconds, and in the final thirty or so seconds. In between, you have about six minutes of improvising, staking out new territory, taking chances. Sims and Pass. Pass and Sims. As equals, or each taking the lead for a while--these guys turn Pennies From Heaven into a quietly swinging, sometimes meditative, but never predictable jazz piece.

Recently, tenorman Scott Hamilton and legendary guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli released a tribute cd to Zoot entitled The Red Door. The more one listens to it, the more it seems that this newer cd is actually a tribute to both Sims and Pass, and the yeoman-like work they do on Blues for Two.

Concord Records, in the eighties and nineties, launched a wonderful duo series, featuring artists such as Ed Bickert and Bill Mays, Dave McKenna and Gray Sargent, Bill Charlap and Michael Moore, Howard Alden and Ken Peplowski. Concord seemed aware of the intimacy and creativity that very special duos can create. Look into the series before all the recordings go out of print.

But...first, get the real deal--Zoot and Joe, endlessly and timelessly swinging in musical and spiritual harmony

      5 out of 5 stars six stars!!!!.......2001-10-02

The communication between these two performers is at the very highest level. Indeed, I usually play this for people and scream "this is what is meant by musical communication". Aside from the technical brilliance and flawless execution of the playing, this is flat-out one of the all time laid-back, mellow-swinging sessions ever produced. Every piece achieves an utterly smooth flow. Think of the hypnotic modal aura behind Kind of Blue, the singular brilliance behind Coltrane's My Favorite Things or the complex moody lyricism behind a Wayne Shorter arrangement -- this stuff gives us a comprehensive view of a particular kind of musical language and it creates whole new emotional environments. Similarly with Blues For Two, which provides an answer to the following question: just how far can a duo format go in terms of sheer rhythmic beauty?

5 out of 5 stars Great Jazz Duo.......2000-02-04

If you like traditional jazz played in a small ensemble setting you'll probably like this recording. The quality on this CD is very good. It sounds as if it were recorded live in the studio, and the interaction between players seems to indicate this. Joe Pass provides first-class accompanying (as usual). Zoot Sims plays well here. His soprano work on "Pennies From Heaven" is some of his best recorded work. He has a melodic style of playing and swinging that speaks for itself. It's "real cool". Definately a great jazz master. One of my favorite recordings.
