Wonderful CD for toddlers and up.......2006-06-02

My three year old son loves this CD and listens over and over. We heard Itchie Itchie Ow one morning and he was singing it that afternoon and I knew we had to get the CD. My husband and I enjoy her voice as well, soft, calming and melodious - easy tunes to remember and about things to which kids can relate. She is somewhat similar to Laurie Berkner but Katherine's songs seem to have more relevance, i.e., kids understand muscles and bones and what itchies and owies are. I agree with the other reviewers; you will be listening several times a day so good thing adults enjoy as well!!

My children and I saw Katherine Dines at our library. She is wonderful! We bought two cd's and this is our favorite! Myself my children and all the kids in the neighborhood love her cd's (3-10yr olds). They always ask for it in the car. Muscle and Bones and Hey Sam are hands down the favorites of this cd. I really enjoy listening myself. You won't be disapointed with this cd.

Katherine Dines is the best!.......2000-09-25

My 2-year-old son has had this CD since he was 10 months old, and he loves it! If Mama doesn't play "Sam" (his name for it) at least once a day, she's in trouble! The songs are easy to learn and remember, the tunes are memorable and--great for this adult who has to listen to it over and over--enjoyable! Dines has a real gift for entertaining children as well as educating, and this collection is one of her best.

Bunk with help !.......2001-01-10

I have been a vintage Jazz fan for the last fifty years and I must admit that Lu Watters is one of my least favourite bands. I have always found his beat very heavy and plodding. It must be his reliance on the tuba. To be honest there are many superior revival bands.

The reason that I am reviewing this disc is because of the Bunk recordings. Bunk was oner of the pioneer trumpeters and was rediscovered in 1940. To be honest his technique was really lacking and his constant mistakes exasperated Sydney Bechet when they played together. However, I have always liked his style of playing off the beat and catching up. On this disc he is featured with Lu Watter's sidemen notably Turk Murphy, Ellis Horn and Clancy Hayes. This was a great mix, some of the sides are inspired especially Careless Love with Bunk and Ellis Horn's clarinet. The two gospel sidesz When I Reach for the Sky and Nobody's fault but mine are two of the best I have heard. With the exception of Bunk's atrocious vocal on Down by the Riverside, the remaining sides especially Girls Go Crazy show great ensemble playing and are very musical. Apparently there were other sides cut but these have been lost, which is a pity.

If you like Bunk then listen to his work with George Lewis and also a recent release, The Bunk Project with none other than Woody Allan on a very passable clarinet.

Bunk & Lu practicly started the Dixieland Revival..........2000-09-20

Excellent playing by Bunk Johnson(his absolute best), Lu Watters aint bad either, in fact these two masters practicly started the Dixieland revival(along with Muggsy Spannier) in the late 30's/early 40's. This CD is a must have for Dixieland lovers, and colelctors of Bunk Johnson.

Bunk was an incredble musical force.......2005-08-05

In 2005, one can forget the wonders of a real traditional jazz band. I was just old enough to catch many of the great second and third generation musicians of traditional jazz (Jabbo Smith, Preston Jackson,Ikey Robinson,and the remarkable Franz Jackson, the latter very important to have helped me in my playing and recording this music called jazz), but I was too young (or not in the locale to have heard them)to have caught Kid Thomas, Kid Sheik, Emile Barnes or De De Pierce (though I did get to hear live the Humphrey brothers late in their lives with the Preservation Hall Jazz Band), much less the orginiators like Wooden Joe Nicholas, Kid Ory, Sidney Bechet (though my mother did hear Bechet in France), or the subject of this remarkable CD, Bunk Johnson. While I might not feel that Bunk is the "king of the blues" ( I would give a Mutt Carey, King Oliver or of a later generation, Armstrong or Hot Lips Page this distinction), one has to give Bunk, the ability to phrase the blues with a classist perfection rarely achived (his playing at his best, shows what Virgil Thompson was talking about his freedom, yet melodic sobriety in his improvisations). Bunk concept of where the trumpet's voice is to be in this style of music, and that's not to interfere with the clarinet's clarion register (and he would ,on occasion give George Lewis the lead on clarinet and rest,this being good for both a trumpeter to rest as well as the overall sonic performance to have variety) .We can hear in this CD, why such jazz enthusisatics like Bill Russell, Gene Williams as well as the immortal New Orleans musicians like Armstrong and Bechet were so wanting Bunk to get back into music (I have always felt that Bunk did influence Satchmo in that incredible tone as well as some melodic content and licks from Bunk, though King Oliver had a greater influence on the drive, swing and the variety of registers where Satchmo played). He was a teacher of music as well, and it shows in his classist approach to the music. He was also a link to the very start of jazz itself (along with Wooden Joe Nicholas we can hear something of what New Orleans sounded like circa 1900,in the days of Bolden et all, though one can NEVER recreate another times music), but what really gets to me is the total sonic picture this band reveals (George Lewis and Jim Robinson are simply at their best here, and Lawrence Marrero's banjo proves its the player not the instrument, he with Slow Drag on bass and the immortal Baby Dodds on the drums give a solid yet very supple backing for the horns). The standout track ,for me,is the 9 minite blues "Midnight Blues" (it does put you after hours in a New Orleans dance, and Bunk's lower register solo into the riffs ala "Snag It" puts us back to a mythos of "the good old days"), one of my all time favorite recordings (but then I am a sucker for any era of slow jazz blues, traditional, swing or modern jazz), but really most of the CD is that good. Don't worry that almost all songs are blues, with the same musicians, and recorded within a two week period, there is many different tempos and nuances (and songs like "Weary Blues" and "St Louis Blues" have multiple strains, this does give variety, we also encounter the 8 bar form in "How Long Blues" and "C C Rider"). All in all, a very enjoyable CD that belongs to all who remember early jazz or want to access the roots of today's musics, Yves Francois Smierciak

Historic recording of the New Orleans revival........1999-04-14

Bunk Johnson's first band recordings are rough and ready, poorly recorded and with crude drumming which cannot compare with that of Baby Dodds on later Johnson recordings. And yet, there is something inspiring about the music on this disc. Johnson plays strikingly well, and in "Moose March", the band recorded one of the most joyously invigorating perfomances of the New Orleans revival. The talking records are interesting but should be taken with a pinch of salt.

All reservations apart, it is a historic session, and should be in the collection of all jazz lovers.

A must-have for any Bunk fan........1998-11-05

Eight good to excellent tracks, including - Panama - of the 942 versions of this that I own, this is the the only one with any "Latin" flavor. It must be the only "correct" one.

One track - Yes Lord I am Crippled - that I just I couldn't get interested in.

Track 10 is what makes this a must-have. At 9+ minutes long, it's the three "talking records" pasted together as a single CD track. You have to turn up the volume, sit real close to a speaker, and replay this interview several times to catch all the words. It's a first-person account that begins in 1895!!!

Fun and educational for kids.......2006-08-07

I believe that word play and sounds are important for youngsters mental development so purchased this CD which is great at playing with words. My son enjoys saying/singing the words on this CD. He really enjoys "I'm going on a Huka Lau" and trying to say "Flea Fly Flow Mosquito" several times fast. Katherine Dines' melodious voice and clear pronunciation comes through strongly on this CD.

GET THIS CD!!!.......2004-07-09

My 13 month old is absolutely mesmerized by the music on this CD! All I have to do is put the CD on in his room, and he will sit through the entire thing while playing quietly and staring up at the CD player. It's incredible! AND, I've noticed him trying to make the sounds and "singing along". I cannot tell you how much I love this CD! The songs are contagious!! Watch out or you'll end up singing them all day. Get this CD!

This CD is just plain FUN. The styles are so diverse and the collection is fantastic. The kids really enjoy this one.

Wacky word fun for elementary age wordsters.......2006-08-07

My eight year old granddaughter and I listen, laughing as we try to sing the silly songs (the lyrics are included). As a recently retired teacher, I believe it builds her linguistic skills but she simply finds it silly and fun. Although she likes them all, she is best at Oodles and Oodles of Noodles.
