5 out of 5 stars Too cool !.......2004-08-02

Coolness is never enough when your name is Paul Gonsalves. This cd is a splendid example of a real jazz record as they should always be. Fantastic musicians on very seat, an "upgraded" Wynton Kelly trio plus Nat Adderley at the cornet and Paul on tenor free to improvise on well known jazz vehicles. The music is cool, this is the perfect word to describe it. Cool mid tempo tunes with the right attitude. A relaxed extremely cool session with few really fast or slow moments which sports some spectacular solos from all the guys on well known standards and jazz progressions. A blues, a minor blues, Yesterdays, a couple of ballads, in the end a really nice program perfect for a blowing session. Paul's sound is extremely nice, you can almost hear his breath, it's extremely confidential. The year is 1960 if I remember well. What ca I add more?
Long Live Fantasy OJC !!!

5 out of 5 stars Ellington Alum's Classic Solo Effort.......2000-07-10

Paul Gonsalves was best known as a member of Duke Ellington's band. But on "Gettin' Together" he trades in his big band charts for some good old quintet jams and improvisations. Just like the Ellington band, Paul's band here is stellar as well with Nat Adderley joining on cornet, and the classic rhythm trio of Wynton Kelly, Sam Jones and Jimmy Cobb providing the backbone. The quintet delivers classic performances on a set of standards that range from "Yesterdays" to "Walkin'." Gonsalves sounds so comfortable in a small group that you'd never know he rarely performed in this context. Good thing the Jazzland label had the the good sense to record him.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Jazz CD for the Saxaphone Enthusiast.......2002-05-17

This is a wonderful CD from that 1950-1965 period when Jazz was at it's best. Art Peppers's saxaphone playing is something to behold if you've never heard it before and the songs on the album are an interesting mix. Very enjoyable.

4 out of 5 stars "Gettin' Together" Has Got It Together.......2000-09-06

When Art Pepper made his classic "Meets The Rhythm Section" in 1957, the trio he used was the same one Miles Davis used in his first classic quintet -- Red Garland, Paul Chambers and Philly Joe Jones. To further capitalize on that album's success, Pepper cut a follow-up of sorts with "Gettin' Together" in 1960, again using Miles Davis' rhythm section. The only difference was that in those three years, two of the members of the Miles Davis group had changed. While Chambers still handled bass duties, Wynton Kelly had replaced Garland on piano and Jimmy Cobb, not Philly Joe, was on drums. To mix things up a little, Pepper has also added Conte Candoli on trumpet to the frontline. As with "Meets the Rhythm Section," the material on "Gettin' Together" is mostly standards -- "The Way You Look Tonight," Monk's "Rhythm-A-Ning," "Softly As In A Morning Sunrise" -- however, Chambers' original "Whims of Chambers" is the album's best track. While it doesn't quite measure up to "Meets the Rhythm Section," "Gettin' Together" has got it together.

4 out of 5 stars A fine blowing session: they'd already "gotten it together"!.......2006-07-27

I agree, in general, with the first reviewer [below], except that, for me, "The Court" and "Do I love You" are the musical high points.
Surely "Gettin' It Together" is something of a misnomer for this mature blowing session.
In the LP era, I used to own a couple of $0.49 or $0.99 anthologies that contained "The Court," "Mr. L." and "Chantized", all Fuller originals.
[One of those LP's had a fine Pepper Adams/Donald Byrd item, too; and the other, by way of delightful contrast, may have had Teddy Wilson's "Sidney's Soliloquy" & an Urbie Green version of the "Mr Lucky" theme on it.]
How I loved those "five-and-dime" miscellany albums!
Anyway, I'm glad at last to be able to hear the entire session.
I urge potential listeners to overlook Scott Yanow's facile dismissal [elsewhere] of this music as an "otherwise unremarkable set".
It's what Dan Morgenstern might call an example of "friendly music" from that period.
And very high quality, to boot.
Data for the original Warwick LP, which was produced by vibist Teddy Charles, indicate that Walter Bishop Jr. (piano), Buddy Catlett (bass) and Stu Martin (drums) were the rhythm section -- which sounds about right.

        5 out of 5 stars Under-rated, Under-mentioned Gem.......2004-12-05

This has got to be one of the most underrated jazz albums of all time.
If your feet and legs don't start moving when this band starts swinging,
you don't have the sound on. Definitely a keeper.

Every tune is excellent, but two songs are the definitive versions, as far
as I am concerned, If I Were A Bell and But Beautiful.
But Beautiful is sometimes played as a dull and boring ballad,
but as played by Curtis Fuller's trombone, it's just "beautiful".
His solos on these tunes are as satisfying as can be, as he
takes the lead on this album, regardless or the marquee order.

Freddie Hubbard does less modern trumpet playing (such as he did with Herbie Hancock)
and less smooth fusion (as he did in some solo albums) and more keep-it-movin'
straight-ahead swinging jazz. Actually, the same could be also said for Curtis Fuller.
He plays more in the hard-bop vein many Art Blakey.

But Yusef Lateef, as under-rated a tenorman as you'll find on an under-rated
album, takes some super solos on tenor sax and flute (on Chantized).

However, the album doesn't list the piano or bass players. This remains a mystery.
The album would not be as good were it not for the super job they do.
Rather than list the possible names I've heard mentioned around the internet
and start rumors, can anyone confirm the state for sure who they are?

Art Pepper's musical ability shines on this C.D. The first thing I notice when listening, is Art's sound. His sound is like a small brook flowing through a wooded area and bustling Los Angeles all at once. Art Pepper was an individual player. Although many players were out trying to be Charlie Parker clones, he stuck to his thing. The final track, "The Way You Look Tonight" is a jazz standard played by many. Art approaches this song melodically and builds his solo quite nicely. In my opinion, this is the best track on the CD. This CD makes an excellent addition to my collection. Bringing Art Pepper into your listening vocabulary is a smart and rewarding thing to do and this CD is a great way to start.
