Based on Nicholas Sparks' novel, director Nick Cassavetes film spins the bittersweet tale of a 60-year romance, as seen from the polar perspectives of its promising youth and the travails of an old age cursed by Alzheimer's. Its soundtrack effectively echoes those polar dramatic concerns, with composer Aaron Zigler's gentle orchestral score largely giving voice to the character's melancholy present, while a rich, well-chosen slate of vintage material by Billie Holiday, Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman and Glenn Miller imparts a restless energy to their youth. There's a certain schmaltz to much of Zigman's work here, yet cues like "House Blues/The Porch Dance.." and "Noah's Journey" argue he's achieved something more elusive than mere melodramatic wallpaper with the deceivingly difficult task at hand; it can't be easy to have your work seasoned with the likes of Ellington's sassy "Alabamy Home" and Goodman's still-vibrant "One O'Clock Jump." Sharply contrasting versions of "I'll Be Seeing You" by Holiday and Jimmy Durante bookend the soundtrack, perfectly evoking the story's alternating shades of hope and fading nostalgia and framing Zigman's understated work in the bargain. --Jerry McCulleyAlbum Description
Based on the best selling novel by Nicholas Sparks ("A Walk To Remember", "Message In A Bottle"), "The Notebook" is the story of Noah and Allie, teenage lovers torn apart by WWII and Allie's parents' demands to marry a respectable lawyer. After 14 years apart, they meet again and rekindle their true love. Starring Ryan Gosling, Rachel McAdams, James Garner, and Gena Rowlands. The soundtrack is a propelling force. In addition to classic WWII era pieces, Aaron Zigman's score suites enhance the record with beautifully dramatic themes. Score performed by the Hollywood Studio Symphony.Customer Reviews:
Touching.......2007-07-04
It say's go for the "true love", settle for nothing else no matter what may be in store, because love that is "true" and as beautiful as their's was, is a rare thing!
I absolutely loved the ending.
I also loved that a movie CAN be truly wonderful, beautiful and touching WITHOUT grafic "sex scenes!" Also sadly a rare thing in movies today.
Ever seen "Hanover Street?" Equally beautiful. No SEX scenes either!

Don't Do It!.......2005-02-09
These have to be the most soulless, sterile, uninspiring versions of these songs available. Yeah, it was recorded digitally, but so what? Everything sounds close-miked and unbalanced. Did the drummer on these tracks ever even HEAR an original Miller recording?? Man...way off.
Could have been a good idea, but badly executed. The 15-track Greatest Hits CD (RCA), on the other hand, is remastered with care and sounds a lot better than this plastic recording, Hi-Fi
or not.
Buy it for the booklet and not the music.......2002-10-05
I did assign 3 stars, primarily for the accompanying booklet. It goes far beyond the normal recitations of Miller's life and tragic disappearance, providing insights into his personality along with a treasure trove of little-known facts. For example, how many fans are aware that he authored a reference book about arranging techniques, or that "In the Mood" was originally titled "Tar Paper Stomp"?
Unfortunately even the booklet is not without its problems. There are at least a half-dozen major factual errors, including an entire paragraph referring to Skip MARTIN, rather than Skip NELSON, as the vocalist who followed Ray Eberle in the final months of the civilian band's existence. Yes, there was a Skip Martin in the band as well, but he played sax for a while around 1940 - hardly the same role or time frame. If the music were better I might excuse the gaffes, but I can't.
Always in the mood for this cd.......2001-02-04
It pulsates, it moves, it's good stuff!
Get ready to swing!!.......2001-01-28
So why only 4 stars and not 5?
First, the running time is only a half hour, but seeing it was recorded in 1983 (when the average album's running time was 35-40 minutes), I can understand why. Also, although these recordings are stunning, they are not originals. But that would defeat the purpose of creating a superior sounding CD, which is why these songs were re-recorded with a digital mood!! This is an enjoyabe addition to your Miller collection.
For a great original Miller CD, I highly recommend "The Essential Glenn Miller" (2CD's).

Intimate gem and a wonderful hommage.......2007-04-30
Nevertheless, "Radio Days" is Allen's movie that I enjoy the most, based on a pure emotional impulse. Here you find the perfect mix of fun and love: Allen evocative memory of his infancy is treated with such tenderness and understanding, fun and respect, that even not being born or lived in the radio era you ends loving it as the author did.
And that is precisely a great piece of art: the one that correctly connect the audience with the subject depicted.
Everything here works: the superb music selection, the link between music and situations, the mood of every scene, characters and actors, and Allen's own appearance as the narrator.
A masterpiece.

Beautiful musical landscapes.......2007-01-28
When you came in sight I got that old feeling
The moment you came by I felt a thrill
And when you caught my eye
My heart stood still
Once again I seemed to have that old yearning
And I knew the spark of love was still burning
There'll be no new romance for me
It's foolish to start
For that old feeling is still in my heart
The score to Woody Allen's film Radio Days boasts magnificent classic songs and instrumental numbers mostly from the World War 2 era. Each song has a haunting melody to it with a quiet strength; these songs as a track set produce a stunning CD.
The CD begins with swinging big band flavored "In The Mood" by Glenn Miller and His Orchestra. The CD then turns into a mood that is even more playful with "I Double Dare You" by Larry Clinton and His Orchestra. "Opus No. 1" by Tommy Dorsey and His Orchestra follows--these three songs in succession generate a grand slam opening! Excellent!
Other classic instrumentals on this CD include "Frenesi" by Artie Shaw and His Orchestra; "Body And Soul" by The Benny Goodman Trio and "I'm Getting' Sentimental Over You" performed flawlessly by Tommy Dorsey and His Orchestra. Each instrumental track paints beautiful musical landscapes and each number brings back memories for those of us who lived through those years.
Classic vocal numbers on this CD stun you with their potency. "You And I" by Tommy Dorsey and His Orchestra opens as an instrumental and when Sinatra joins in his vocals are perfect; Sinatra never sings a superfluous note. SMILES "Remember Pearl Harbor" is equally potent and very patriotic; the lyrics order fighting soldiers to win the war at any cost and to never forget the tragedy of Pearl Harbor. Moreover, Guy Lombardo and His Royal Canadians impeccably execute "That Old Feeling," a romantic ballad with unforgettable lyrics.
The CD song stack ends with the potent "One, Two, Three, Kick" by Xavier Cugat and His Waldorf-Astoria Orchestra. The Cuban beat of this song seduces you to listen more--don't be surprised if you play this entire CD over again because just one listen won't make you sick of these fine numbers the second time around!
The liner notes give the credits for the movie and a list of the songs on the CD. I wanted an essay about the movie and its songs; but that's just not here. This is a minor disappointment.
Unfortunately, a more important disappointment exists. The tracks on the CD have too much surface noise which proves not enough care was given to digitally remaster this wonderful numbers. To be fair, perhaps they remastered these numbers with state of the art equipment in 1987 when they released this CD. They could have re-released this CD with superior remastering equipment over the last twenty years. Unfortunately, I have to take off one star for this to make this a four star review.
Overall, this CD provides not only the music from the movie Radio Days; it also helps us all appreciate the wonderful music from the World War 2 era. I recommend this CD for fans of classic pop vocals. Fans of motion picture soundtracks will be very pleased with this album as well.

The first Glenn Miller Compact Disc........2006-04-12
I also bought the "Essential Glenn Miller" collection and I thought it suffered from too much noise reduction and the song selection was too heavy on Eberle ballads. The "Unforgettable Glenn Miller & His Orchestra" collection has just one Eberle song and it's biggest hit "Serenade In Blue."
I've since bought the 3 disc/60 song "Popular Recordings" collection. That too has some of those "scratches and pops," but they just don't bother me at all. Anyway, this disc makes a great starting point, in your Glenn Miller discoveries.
Finally, why can't these compilations of old 78's have a few more seconds between them? Essentially we have a bunch of singles all crammed together, so why not let them have some breathing room. As I recall, the British Beatles albums from 1963 to 1966 had a seven second break between songs. I loved it! It was like letting dust settle before being inundated with another song right away. It basically gives each song it's own spotlight. Oh, the days of one song at a time.
Don't buy this collection unless you prefer scratches and pops.......2006-01-22
All the best...the creme de la creme of the Miller orchestra.......2004-05-04
A must-have!.......2003-11-18
Among the sixteen tunes are such classics as Moonlight Serenade, In the Mood, and Don't Sit Under the Apple Tree. The liner notes are practically nonexistent, which is unfortunate, as I would really like to know who the female singer is on Don't Sit Under the Apple Tree (her voice is wonderful!). So, if you are a fan of swing music, or just want a taste of that 1940s sound, then I highly recommend that you get this CD. It's a must-have!

The Viennese waltz is never far from violinist Andre Rieu's heart, but you won't find a single work from Johann Strauss on Life Is Beautiful. This time around, Rieu is globetrotting for his hummable, danceable melodies--to solid results. "Ole Guapa" is a tango featuring accordion; "Kalinka" is a familiar Russian tune; and "Amazing Grace," "Snow White," and Rieu's "Glenn Miller Melody" are tried-and-true American. Throughout, Rieu and his orchestra perform these works with plenty of style and polish; it's easy to see why he's such a hit with public-television audiences. His shortened version of Bolero may not be the sexiest available, but it is fun. --Jason VerlindeCustomer Reviews:
Romantic.......2003-09-10
I feel the best tracks on this album are the russian-themed ones, like the title track (which I listen to on REPEAT when I am looking through my russian countryside or Romanov family album books). I feel that this and "Lara's Theme" (Maurice Jarre's love theme from the film DR. ZHIVAGO (a wonderful book and DVD)! conveys the passion for homeland which I strongly feel beats strongest in the hearts of all russians, more than than any other people). These compositions are so beautiful that it brings tears to the eyes if one surrenders oneself to them.
