Album Description

The fun songs here are timeless classics that appeal to kids of all ages. By featuring childhood favorites such as "Old McDonald" and "The Muffin Man," both sung by Ella Fitzgerald, as well as more offbeat songs ("Mumbles" by Oscar Peterson featuring Clark Terry), Jazz for Kids makes for a great way to teach youngsters about jazz and swing music as well as some of its most legendary performers.

Little ones can sing along with Lionel Hampton's "Rag Mop" and share in the hand claps on "When the Red, Red, Robin Comes Bob, Bob, Bobbin' Along" performed here by Carmen McRae. Their appetites will surely be fueled by Louis Prima's "Yes! We Have No Bananas" and "Potato Chips" from Slim Gaillard and His Baker's Dozen.

The kid-tested collection (children, nieces and nephews of Verve Records' staff helped make the final selections) also includes "Ain't Nobody Here But Us Chickens" by Louis Jordan and His Tympany Five, "Chicken Rhythm" also by Slim Gaillard, and Blossom Dearie's "Doop-Doo-De-Doop (A Doodlin' Song)."

Jazz for Kids finishes with an inspiring lesson and uplifting message for both youngsters and adults alike in the form of Louis Armstrong's "What a Wonderful World."

As Jazz for Kids makes little girls and boys dance, smile, giggle and ask for more, it is finally a children's album that their parents won't mind listening to again, and again, and again, and again...

5 out of 5 stars Really Fun. My children like it. I like it........2007-06-27

I probably like it more than my children do, but they have enjoyed listening as we drive around.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome!.......2007-06-11

Real Jazz artist...real kids music...perfect pairings for the parent wanting to inspire a love of music and culture in their children! The Old McDonald rendition has since turned my 18 month old son onto listening to my other Jazz alblums. SO much better than the sugar-sweet kids music that drives parents crazy. I have no problem listening to this alblum with other adults in the car.

5 out of 5 stars I wish there were more albums like this one........2007-05-13

Jazzed up versions of songs you know and new funky songs you don't. We bought this CD for our young daughter (6 months at the time). My husband and I can't help singing the "Potato Chips" song whenver we eat them for lunch and the rest of the songs whenever. This is one of our favorite CDs for Kids. Highly recommend it to anyone who wants to introduce jazz to kids (or adults) because it is so fun. You can't help but toe-tap when you hear it.

5 out of 5 stars THE best kids CD I've ever heard........2007-05-03

This CD is fabulous for kids and parents alike.

5 out of 5 stars We love this CD!!!.......2007-04-28

My 4 year old daughter absolutely loves this CD, and so do we - another one of those kid's CDs that both parents and kids can genuinely enjoy together. I guess what I like about this CD above and beyond, though, is that the songs are originals - not new "kids versions" of great songs. My daughter gets to hear this great music, by the original musicians, without it being watered down at all for her...and yet it is still music that is completely appropriate for her age. The songs on this CD are incredibly energetic, lively, and fun, and the times dancing and singing to them with my daughter have been among my favorite experiences with her!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars GREAT for kids and parents, too!.......2007-04-13

I rarely write reviews, but just had to write about this amazing CD. It's not your typical kiddie-fare. My three kids (ages 4, 6, and 8) listen to this one over and over again, and my husband and I are hooked, too. We are not into jazz at all, but the songs here are so catchy and fun. It's cool enough that you could even play it at an adult function, and everyone would like it. In fact, I'm buying it for my mom, who is 64, because I know that she'll be singing it around the house in no time at all -- just like we do!

4 out of 5 stars cute for kids.......2006-08-13

I bought "Nicky's Jazz Lullabies" before my baby was born and loved it, so I decided to purchase this CD. My baby is a little young for it yet, but it fun to listen to while we play. The songs are cute and catchy, and I'm sure she'll love it eventually. I'm a jazz lover and hope to introduce her to some of the greats. Plus, in my opinion, this beats those cheesy kids songs any day.

5 out of 5 stars Everybody listens when they come to my house.......2006-07-25

This is a delightful program of songs that will please everyone with a garden of word-tune delights. My family and I loved it. We've played it over and over again for our friends. I bought it for several other children I know. They loved it. One 4-year-old is determined to learn every song. And that means learning lots of words, rhymes, syncopation, from great artists of American jazz culture. A verbal infusion for the young that is great fun.

5 out of 5 stars A gem!.......2006-01-23

I rarely write reviews, but I need to comment on how fantastic this compilation is. I have a four-year-old and an eighteen-month-old, and this CD is in heavy rotation at our house. My husband and I love the music at least as much as they do -- it's stylish and sets a great mood as we're making dinner and doing dishes. The kids love it too, needless to say. My four-year-old's favorites are Three Blind Mice (she loves when the farmer's wife squeaks that she'll give back the tails) and the final track by Peggy Lee (where she says the word *poop*, as in "party poop" -- endless laughter ensues). Ella Fitzgerald's A-Tisket, A-Tasket and Chew, Chew Your Bubblegum are priceless. All in all, I highly recommend this CD -- everyone will be happy to hear it again and again.

5 out of 5 stars One of the most under rated cd's on the market.......2005-05-03

This cd has won awards and delighted anyone who has listened. Why it isn't a requirement for kids learning about music, especially in the US where Jazz became Jazz, is beyond me. Perfectly charming songs from the best of the best who made Jazz, lots of passionate Jazz.

5 out of 5 stars Great Music for Toddlers and Mom, but Dad isn't a Fan.......2006-11-13

Simply stated, the entire CD is fantastic. It is a nice change from the traditional sing-along tunes and exposes a new generation to music from another era. Personally I love it because it contains songs that my grandmother sang to me and now my little ones can learn the lyrics to sing the songs to her. Our three-year-olds giggle during Woody Woodpecker and Three Little Fishes, hiss on cue during The Pussy Cat Song (Nyow! Nyot Nyow!), they do The Hokey Pokey in their carseats, and sing along to Jeepers Creepers, Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah, and Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo.

4 out of 5 stars Come out and play with me........2006-09-21

This CD features Capitol Records recording artists performing "kids songs". Kids songs is this case are songs based on nursery rhymes, or songs from Disney movies, or silly novelty songs that kids like. The performers are mostly "pop singers" from the pre-rock and roll era. People like Nat King Cole, Tony Bennett and the Lettermen. Sadly, Frank Sinatra singing "Old MacDonald" is not included. But the songs that are included are pretty entertaining. This is a fun, lighthearted CD.

    5 out of 5 stars I LOVE this CD!!!.......2006-06-15

My cousin gave this CD to me when my daughter was 2, that was 3 years ago... I didn't even open it for about 6 months after it was given to me, it just didn't look like something I would like. I was SO wrong.

We just moved and this CD was somehow destroyed, and I was devestated, I am so happy that I can purchase it here. I am having "withdrawl" symptoms!! Fun and happy, I can't imagine anyone NOT enjoying this music.

I am thrilled that I can listen to music that does not drive me insane (Barney-type songs), and that my children are learning different musical styles. They enjoy this CD more than any of the others.. which goes to show that truly good music, performed by wonderfully talented performers, will never go out of style.

5 out of 5 stars Another interesting musical anthology from Capitol's artists.......2005-08-16

The Capitol Sings collection is one of my favorite musical anthology series. During the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s the record label basically had its artists singing just about every song ever written (well, it sure seems that way). Most of the volumes I had are devoted to a particular composer or team thereof (e.g., Cole Porter, Rodgers & Hammerstein), but "Small Fry: Capitol Sings Kids' Songs for Grownups" takes a different approach, providing some of Capitol's big names, such as Nat King Cole and Gordon MacRae, singing what are essentially novelty songs.

That means you will recognize the songs, such as "Teddy Bear's Picnic" and "Swinging on a Star," but you probably have never heard these versions, done respectively by Frank DeVol and the Four Freshman. There might be some exceptions to this rule, such as Johnny Mercer's "Glow Worm" and "Mairzy Doats" by the Pied Pipers, but you get the idea. There is something charming about Gordon MacRae doing the "Pussycat Song (Nyot Nyow)" and "'A' You're Adorable (The Alphabet Song)" (he likes parenthetical song titles apparently). Sometimes you just have to smile at the idea of the Merry Macs recording "Pop Goes the Weasel" or Tony Bennett doing "Jepers Creepers." You have no other choice when Mel Blanc does the "Woody Woodpecker Song."

I had never heard the whole version of "Bushel and a Peck," so it was nice to finally hear that and everybody needs to know about the "Hokey Pokey." It is also interesting to hear covers of a lot of tunes from Disney films, with June Christy doing "Give a Little Whistle," the Jubalaires singing "A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes," Mercer doing "Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah," MacRae's "Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo," and the Lettermen doing "When You Wish Upon a Star." You also get a couple of nice lullabies from Nat King Cole, "There's a Train Out for Dreamland" and "(Go to Sleep) My Sleepy Head." You will recognize enough of the songs and the artists to appreciate that you will probably enjoy the rest. All of these Capitol Sings albums are worth at least a listen for those who appreciate such musical stylings.

5 out of 5 stars The best compromise!!.......2004-04-22

My Sister-in-Law gave us this when my daughter (now 15 months) was born. It is "her" CD when we are in the car - and she kicks along to the rhythm of the songs! But the best part is that it's great to listen to for adults too...
Not your usual, insipid, sing-songy giggly-gaggle-of-children songs... classics by big bands and great artists!
Sure, one or two WILL get on your nerves after several repetitions - but that's what the fast-forward button is for!

Best CD for both adults and kids I've found!!

If Lisa Yves's Jazz for Kids (Everybody's Boppin') flies off shelves the way it ought to, any remaining jazz-circle hubbub over whether bebop lives will finally fizzle, for now and at least a generation to come. This unfortunately unjazzily titled record--the smooth-singing Massachusetts-based music teacher's debut--mixes up a batch of classics and originals--everything from Louis Prima's "Sing Sing Sing" and Duke Ellington's "In a Mellow Tone" to her "Counting to Ten," which imaginatively and impressively teaches kids to count to 10 in 5/4 time, and "Alphabet Scat," an ABCs-based scatting primer.

But Yves, who also demonstrates her talents as producer and co-arranger here, isn't in possession of the only golden pipes on this 18-song, hourlong CD. Accompanying her on scats are a handful of students of various ages, a couple of whom step out as soloists (most notably Sarah Konowitz, whose rendition of the Neal Hefti-Stanley Styne tune "Cute" is a let's-hear-it-again gem). Sharp musicianship is especially evident on "The Dry Cleaner from Des Moines" and "Colors of the Blues," with sax, flute, bass, trumpet, and piano all handled with equal aplomb by a skilled group of studio musicians who sometimes soar, other times set a mood that's smoky, soulful, or subdued.

Best of all, though, is Jazz for Kids's effectiveness as an unstuffy introduction to this sometimes complex musical world. Yves, in her clear-headed, swingy way, flings open the genre's doors and celebrates its heroes. A few run-throughs and future scatters will come away ready to step up to the sounds of Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Ellington, and Louis Armstrong. After Yves's thoughtful, thorough introduction, they'll savor such icons all the more. --Tammy La Gorce

5 out of 5 stars Fun for moms & kids.......2005-07-24

I got this for my 15-month old daughter. She seems to really enjoy it, and it's a lot of fun for me, too. Very nicely done and, unlike some CDs, I don't find it annoying when the kids are singing. They really add to the songs.

5 out of 5 stars Great for kids and adults.......2001-10-27

This CD contains jazz standards as well as original music by Lisa Yves. The music is sung by both Lisa and her students who appear to be between the ages of about 8 and 15 years old. All of the music is performed in an engaging style. Lisa Yves is one of the most musical people doing music for children; everything she does just grabs you (and your kids).

Her originals tend to educate about jazz, both about music and the history and personalities. One of the most aggressive (and successful) of these is "Counting to Ten" which teaches the concept of 5/4 time. I never though I'd see my 8 year old coping with music in 5/4 but that's the magic of a good teacher.

I HIGHLY recommend this (and her other CD "Vocalese" to any parent that wants to turn their children onto jazz music. It sure beats The A Teens or Backstreet Boys.

5 out of 5 stars a cd for adults who think about jazz as kids do broccoli.......2000-11-25

this is a great kids cd but also doubles as a jazz cd for adults who consider jazz in the same way kids may treat broccoli. no pun intended: this is a tasty album. i have given this album to over fifteen parents with children aged 4-15 and all parents say this cd is their kid's favorite. sorry barney. and everyone knows kids are the toughest critics. just ask the broccoli.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent CD for kids AND adults.......2000-09-27

This CD is very upbeat. My favorite is Alphabet Scat. I highly recommend it

5 out of 5 stars Jazz for "Kids" of All Ages.......2000-06-17

First, let's acknowledge what this cd isn't: it isn't cute, gimmicky, cliche-ridden, patronizing, watered-down, compromising, dull, sappy, etc., etc., which so many sessions aimed at a particular non-traditional audience usually are. On her own merits - for a moment taking the wonderful kids out of it - Lisa Yves is a remarkable musician with beautiful phrasing and a warm fluid voice that scats effortlessly, even when she's working in a register more suited to the kids. Her writing is hip, engaging and inventive, and she holds her own on Jon Hendricks' turf. But now, add these extraordinary kids. Where did they develop chops at such an early age? Usually, you hear kids trying to scat or sing jazz, they sound strained, off-tempo, uncomfortable, as if they'd prefer crooning with Raffi. But these youngsters relate to the music. They glide, slur, punch, skip, doubletime and all of it, like pros. I love them and I love this recording. I'ts what music & kids should be about and Ms. Yves gracefully puts it all into a comfortable context with references to folks from Bach to Monk - and many in between. My six year old & I ride around the Green Mountains listening to Jazz for Kids and happily scatting together. I wish Yves were teaching in his school.

      Album Description

Many great songs have been written about the places in America where we live, visit and learn about. In this album, Lisa Yves and the Young Beboppers take you to some of these great states through traditional jazz standards while they pay tribute to some of the places where jazz originated and to one of the great jazz poets and author of the novel, On the Road, Jack kerouac. As a special added bonus, Lisa Yves has added a second cd, Lisa Yves-solo on the road.

Once again, Lisa Yves has given us a unique kid friendly, musically terrific Jazz for Kids CD. I teach Music Together classes (family music program) and we listen to music each week. Kids love to hear other kids sing, and especially love the beat of jazz! Lisa's vocals are exceptional and the talented Young Beboppers are amazing! Definitely family friendly and interesting enough for adults! A winning combination!

I just purchased this CD, and am pleased with the variety of jazz styles. I dropped my rating by one star as Kenny G's song nearly put me to sleep.
