Album Description

Taking Chances combines a mixture of crafty originals and timeless standards. The release kicks off with a fiery intro by Dana Hall on Stafford's A Nick Off The Mark. This Afro-Cuban delight showcases Stafford's extraordinary range and control of the trumpet. Tim Warfield on soprano saxophone and pianist Bruce Barth also contribute engaging solos on this tune. Pegasus, written by Barth, is a bebop-oriented tune that displays the artistic range of the group. The pace slows for a lovely rendition of the ballad Taking A Chance On Love by Duke, Fetter and LaTouche. Warfield on soprano, Stafford on flugelhorn, Barth and Hodge all play exquisite solos. The group has a fresh take on the traditional Jesus Loves Me. The rhythm section vamps while Warfield and Stafford exchange phrases. This culminates when the melody is played in unison with great force. The group finds its groove with Blues For J.T., a funky original by Stafford, which he dedicates to his father. The ballad Old Folks by Hill and Robison showcases Stafford's fluid and lush playing on this standard. Paper Trail by Dana Hall bounces with great energy. Warfield displays why he is one of the great tenor players today. Stafford and Hall build off each other throughout the song with their hard bop phrasing. The evening comes to a close with a bang on Warfield's hip composition Shake It For Me.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Hard Bop.......2007-06-14

If you like hard bop Art Blakey style but with a modern twist then you will love this CD. All the playing is top-notch but of special note is Tim Warfield who blows as good as he ever has. The sound quality is fantastic for a live recording, it makes you feel like you're right there in the middle of all the action. When you look over the track list don't be fooled by the cut Jesus Loves Me. Yes this is the same tune that many of us learned as a little child in our Sunday school class. And it starts out with that same melody but then it transforms in to a hard bop work out as Tim Warfield takes the melody tears it to shreds then puts it back together again. This will easily be one of the top CDs of the year. And one of Terrell Staffords best CDs ever.

Album Description

The trio opens the set with Stompin' at the Savoy (Sampson, Goodman and Webb), a fresh new take on a classic jazz chestnut. Tea and Watercolors (Keezer) is an original inspired by a friend's apartment by the sea, suffused with aromas of brewing chai spices and boldly colored walls decorated with homemade paintings. Koikugari Bushi (Sadao China) is a celestial composition where Geoffrey gives his audience a glimpse into his love of Okinawan music. The trio excites the crowd with Mirrim (Keezer), a catchy original composition that is a `fasten your seat belt' showcase of the strong musicianship of the trio. On Venus As A Boy (Björk) Geoffrey brings an `island easiness' to this popular singers' composition. The Kindest Soul (For J.W.) (Keezer) is a warm gesture to one of his life teachers, the late, great pianist James Williams. Black and Tan Fantasy (Ellington/Miley) is a freshly polished nugget from the treasure chest of the late, great Duke Ellington. The trio swings full on. The set closes with two compelling originals by Geoffrey. Ghost in the Photograph (Keezer) conveys visions of an old ballroom in a forgotten hotel, with sepia toned photographs on the wall of dancers long departed - or maybe the apparition that appears if someone dashes in front of a camera set to long exposure. Breath of the Volcano (Keezer) was inspired by a volcano in Japan that breathes sulphur smoke from its boiling, craggy nostrils.

5 out of 5 stars Like being at the show........2005-12-18

This new Geoff Keezer album is fantastic. It's general genre is straight-ahead jazz, but with the rhythmic and harmonic freshness and virtuosity that characterizes the great new players like Geoff Keezer, Brad Mehldau, Bill Stewart, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Mark Turner, Jorge Rossy, etc. What is specially good about it, though, is the way it captures the "live" experience. Sometimes you go to a club and hear a set that is too good to believe, and you're gripping your seat with a feeling of great urgency, feeling totally seized by the music. That's what it's like to listen to this album. I'm on the edge of my seat from the first note to the last, so much so that I need to stop it sometimes to take a break. It's the best album I've heard in awhile. You can't lose with this album.

5 out of 5 stars I love this album!!!.......2007-02-26

I heard the chains of love song on the blues music cable channel and loved it. I came to amazon.com to see if I could find the album so I could sample the rest of the songs. I listened to it and had to have it. I love the entire album. How often do you find an album where you love (not like) 10 of the 12 songs. Houston Person on the sax and Junior Mance on the piano made this purchase even sweeter. I play the CD all the time. I had to order a second one for my mother. She also loves the CD.

5 out of 5 stars I wish I could've been there!.......2005-12-03

What an amazing voice! And an incredible band! I hadn't known of of the dynamo soulstress Barbara Morrison before a friend introduced me, and I was instantly captivated. This album is mesmerizing from beginning to end. There is definitely magic in the air on this recording.

5 out of 5 stars I love this CD!.......2005-11-30

Barbara Morrison is great! I love the risque swagger of "Sundown" ("I do my best work after dark") and the tender, intense depth of "At Last." Houston Person is one of my favorite sax players, and Junior Mance, who I wasn't that familiar with, burns the blues on piano.

5 out of 5 stars A great Artist - A great CD.......2005-11-26

Barbara is one of the great ladies of jazz and blues who draws comparisons with the legendary singers like Ella and Dinah Washington. This CD showcases her at her very best - live with a dream quartet. Junior Mance and Houston Person are worth the price of this CD alone. This had to be a great live show!

4 out of 5 stars GREAT SINGING BUT CD MASTERING A BIT SUSPECT.......2007-06-23

The great Dakota Staton's glorious voice is in full force on this live recording. It's such a shame that whoever was responsible for the remastering on this live release didnt take a little more care. Dakota sounds a little like she is singing through a slightly muddy sound system. Thats why I given it four stars instead of the five it would have gotten.

The performances are fantastic the vocals awsome the band tight.......remastering could have been a little better. Sadly we have just lost this underated jazz and blues singer to the one above. Ms Dakota may u sing forever in our hearts......

5 out of 5 stars One of the Giants!.......2002-02-22

It was for good reason that Sonny Stitt said that Von Freeman was "one of the guys playing in the big leagues," and that Roland Kirk swore by him and produced the first record under Von's name for Atlantic in the 1960's. Since then Von has only gotten better. The rhythm section for this live date was solid and Von was on fire. His distinctive sound is a mix of Dexter, Gene Ammons, Stitt, Trane and rich tradition. His solos on the up tempo numbers are exciting and inventive. For me, his ballad playing is as moving as anything you've ever heard. If you love jazz, and you love major tenor players, this album, and Von Freeman are for you. Enjoy!

I was at the Dakota for one of the live shows that make up this recording. This disc truly captures the heat and virtuosity of Godinez and her band. Whether touring with George Benson or Prince or leading her own ensemble, Godinez is an A-list, top-flight percussionist and vocalist and well worth the price of this CD.

Toe-tappers to melodic stories to the best fiddler you've heard. I've listened to these guys since the early 70s. Don't play together much anymore. Hard to slip out of the nursing homes at the same time.
