Editorial Reviews

David A. Mitchell, Urban Network Magazine, March , 2004
"Pleasure Principle's debut CD is tailor-made for radio's adult audiences everywhere."

Product Description
The music of Pleasure Principle is varied in its combination of influences. Brazilian bossa nova merges seductively with urban funk. Mellow acoustic guitars support wailing electric guitar solos. Other songs have rich, lush saxophone harmonies and orchestrations that create a shimmering film noir sensibility. While remaining original and authentic, the music of Principle is perfect for the smooth jazz market, as well as for fans of straight-ahead jazz, contemporary jazz, and rock. Pleasure Principle contains the following songs: "Going Home" 4:06 "Distant Star "4:16 "Incognito" 4:09 "Swept Away" 4:35 "More Than I Ever Wanted" 3:18 "New Year's Eve" 4:29 "Horizon" 4:41 "Promise" 4:15 "All That" 5:02 "Today" 5:42

4 out of 5 stars A True New Wave Genius.......2007-06-19

"The Pleasure Principle" is the album that contains Gary Numan's biggest chart hit, "Cars". And "Cars" is the only commercial-radio-friendly song on the album. The other tracks, however, are works of pure genius, especially "M.E.", "Engineers", and the masterpiece "Tracks". "Tracks" might be the best two minute song I have ever heard.

Numan is only now being credited for his work practically inventing the entire New Wave movement, and this album certainly stands the test of time as one the classics of the genre. Order it without hesitation, slip on your headphones, and prepare for a real listening treat.

5 out of 5 stars best album ever.......2007-04-24

Someone once asked me what my favorite album of all time is. That is of course a very difficult question to answer. But I'll have to choose Gary Numan's The Pleasure Principle because it is the only album of which I've been in continuous possession of for the past 25 years; first as a cassette and then a CD. I can't say that of any other album and I've listened to hundreds. If you like this record then go get Replicas and Telekon. If you like those two then try out I, Assassin.

5 out of 5 stars We're so exposed..........2007-03-30

Numan's sole association for some is still his 1979 hit Cars. It's a shame, because the album it hails from is an excellent record and holds up remarkably well all these years later.

This is a notable rock achievement---a rock album with no guitars. The synthesizers (Minimoog and Polymoog) are put through some guitar pedals and create some big, fat, fuzzy sounds that are pitched, distorted, swished, whatever. The bass and drums are `real', and Numan continues the sci-fi-robot-future-Phillip K Dick-inspired rock. As on Replicas, the hooks seem effortless.

There are a number of Numan classis in addition to Cars, some of them still regularly performed live. Films, for instance, is a funky, menacing number. Metal is a live staple, covered and remixed numerous times and still working. Conversation is another rambling, robot-inspired number with a long synth breakdown at the end, similar to Cars. M.E. is another dark and menacing number, now well-known for the Basement Jaxx use of the sample riff.

Many folks now acknowledge this as an important, influential album, yet Numan remains cult (if at all in the US). The Pleasure Principle is cohesive, the sound has aged incredibly well, and it's ahead of it's time for 1979--not bad for a kid. The remastered and reissued Beggar's Banquet discs are all excellent. The b-sides (three of them) are atmospheric and completely in line with the mood of the album--kind of dark, mechanical, but effortlessly catchy. The live tracks (four) are of excellent quality and come from the Living Ornaments series of live albums (also highly recommended). With a `distant' sound, warm synths, and dark lyrics, Numan was in his own world.

5 out of 5 stars A True Gem.......2007-03-08

The Pleasure Principle, the 1979 New Wave outing from synthpop pioneer Gary Numan is a very enjoyable affair. This is almost-pure (Numan adds electric viola, bass, and acoustic drums to his huge Minimoog sound) cold and melodic synthpop that sounds both modern and dated.
Highlights include the songs "Metal", "Films", "ME", "Observer", and the perennial New Wave favorite "Cars". The sound is excellent and this reissue from the fine UK indie label Beggar's Banquet contains extensive liner notes and photos. Ah...that Minimoog sound!

5 out of 5 stars Another Album That Changed Pop Music........2007-02-19

There were many synth pioneers before Gary Numan: Brian Eno, Wendy Carlos, Pierre Boulez and John Cage among others.

Numan's contemporaries like Ultravox never had a hit in the same stratosphere as "Cars".

What makes The Pleasure Principle so crucial, so pivotal in Pop music was that through "Cars", Gary Numan was able to introduce the mainstream audience to synthesizers better than anyone before him. "Cars" brought them to The Pleasure Principle, and The Pleasure Principle introduced them to synthesizers.

David Bowie's Berlin trilogy of Heroes, Low and Lodger(which included Brian Eno playing on much of them) preceded Numan , but they were more ambient(Heroes and Low) and eclectic(Lodger). Hits like "Heroes" had prominent guitars.

The Pleasure Principle has zero guitars.
It does however have Viola.
And Billy Currie of Ultravox also played Violin on a couple of tracks.

No guitars, mostly synth, some violin and viola.

Does that sound like a hit record?

My favorite track is still "Airlane." It is a simple and beautiful piece that opens the album perfectly.

The single Cars was heavy in synths, (even used synth drums) and yet followed a more pop sensibility.

It's not going to have the complexity of a great Philip Glass work or a Brian Eno album.
And that's the point. The Pleasure Principle was an electronic record that showed a whole new audience how beautiful a synthesizer can sound.

A lot of Electronic bands owe a bit of appreciation to the legacy and influence this album left -including Evening Ocean.

The Pleasure Principle is a classic CD that is still amazing today.

Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars This is great.......2004-06-04

I just got this CD the other day and I am buying a couple for gifts.

I haven't stopped listening to it since I got it. The arrangements stay true to the original arrangements and the music is fresh and exciting to listen to.

I think this CD is great and will make great gifts for my friends who like Janet Jackson.

1 out of 5 stars An insult to Janet-loving audiophiles........2004-06-02

Given the lofty title of this recording and the other reviews of it on Amazon.com, I had rather high hopes for this purchase. Now I'm just hoping there's a used CD store in town that will take this sophomoric rubbish.

As the credits on this CD indicate (warn?), this so-called "string quartet" is actually just TWO people: one playing a real violin and the other playing a SAMPLER with some string sounds, drums, and a few miscellaneous synthesizers in a half-assed attempt to make these songs sound vaguely like the real McCoys. Anyone who knows so little about chamber music as to mistake the strings and drums (other than the lead violin) for real instruments and not the sequenced electronic imitations that they are is probably not an appropriate audience for a seemingly high-brow musical concept that one would expect a "string quartet" to be in the first place. In other words, whether you have trouble comprehending the intellectual complexity of a Britney Spears song or you have an advanced degree in musicology, I can't imagine that you'd want to waste your time and money on such a CD.

And if you're thinking about buying it for a good laugh, unfortunately, while this trash is cheesy, it's not bad enough to stretch into campy. Think of it as William Hung after a year of voice lessons. Still awful, but no longer laughable.

Think of it as a tribute to Janet Jackson when you decide to pass on buying such a poorly conceived knock-off. Or let me know if you'd want to buy it from me for a big discount! Just remember that I won't accept a return...no matter how badly you want to give this "earlobe malfunction" back. You can't say I didn't warn you. CJF

I am gushing!!!

This is the most fabulous CD that you can get! First off it's Damita Jo songs which everyone just loves.... But then they are performed with violins and orchestras... It's Grace meets Will with a passion for life!!!

If you have a special event or a romantic rendevous with someone this music will tantilize your senses and make everyone know that you have A1 class!!!

5 out of 5 stars So Awesome! So Janet!.......2004-04-01

OMG!!!

The first String Quartet Tribute I got was Nickelback and I sooooo loved it!!!

I just got this CD today and it is unbelievable!!! Janet MUST have had something to do with making of it because it is SOOOOOO Janet!

My favs are Control, Love Will Never Do Without You, Rhythm Nation, Escapade, Everytime and Pleasure Principle.

The production is amazing! It has drums and bass with a string quartet and it grooves like the original renditions of all the songs.

Rhythm Nation reminded me of the superbowl performance cause it has marching drums in it just like her performance did......KickIt!!!

I'm buying two copies right now for my two best friends who are huge JJ fans like me... I know they'll love it too!!!

5 out of 5 stars Metal Classic!!.......2005-06-28

Treat is one of my favorite bands. I have a hard time deciding whether I like this CD or Dreamhunter better. But this cd has all the hooks, tight musicianship & huge vocals that made the 80's the best music in my opinion. The guitar solos are worth the price of the CD alone. If you are a melodic metal/AOR fan this has to be in your collection.

5 out of 5 stars Want Real 80's music, than this is it! Treat Rules!.......2005-02-15

This is one of the best melodic/Aor/hair/metal albums to come out of the 80's.Released in 1986,Treat have a great sound all their own. Want pounding well made bass lines. There here! Great Rhythm guitar and guitar solos. It's here!Vocals that sound like 80's european/scandinavian bands. Treat has it!
This band has one great song after another.
Rev it Up(9/10) sets the standard. A great song with fun chorus.
Waiting Game(10/10) has some great guitar work and is very cool.
Love Stroke(7/10) is alright, but not the best track on the album. Still good though.
Eyes of Fire(10/10) is my favorite song on this album. I just love the bass line and guitar work.
Take my Hand(7/10) is the slow song of this album(very similar to a europe song like Carrie) not bad.
Fallen Angel(8/10) is a great song(the keyboard riff on the intro sound like She don't know me by early Bon Jovi).
Caught in the line of fire(8/10) really rocks this is fine song with well planned guitar work and good vocals(A very catchy chorus).
Strike without a warning(8/10) another cool track.
Ride me High(10/10) this song really shows a great deal of talent this group had.(One of the best chorus I ever heard)the guitar and bass are suberb.
Steal your heart away(7/10) not a bad song, not the best though.
Bonus Track, Rev It up (live).
Overall this album is a must own if you like the 80's and 80's metal get this album. It is a crime if you don't own this masterpiece of music.
Treat is real music when we need it most, right now! I really hope the 80's come back soon we need quality like this around. Forget today's music go out and buy the new treat album.
Other album to buy from Treat are Scratch and Bite, Dreamhunter and Organized Crime, tht's about it. Enjoy! I did!

5 out of 5 stars Increíble.......2002-01-13

Simplemente compralo y no te arrepentirás.
