It's no coincidence that Michael Bublé's new album starts with just his voice and some fingersnaps on "The Best Is Yet to Come," a song made famous by Frank Sinatra. The Canadian smoothie looks longingly towards early-'60s Vegas, an impression quickly reinforced when a boisterous horn section makes its grand entrance, about 20 seconds into the track. That Bublé means business is confirmed by the second cut, a fast-paced take on Henry Mancini's "It Had Better Be Tonight," and of course by the CD's very title, another song identified with Sinatra as his cockiest. There are just a few sidesteps from the retro formula that's served Bublé so well so far: a languid duet with Brazilian star Ivan Lins on the bossa "Wonderful Tonight," a gospel choir on "That's Life." Interestingly, Bublé co-wrote the best of those sidesteps, "Everything," a Norah Jones-esque number that alluringly harks back to sunny '70s pop. It's also the only song on the album produced by Bob Rock (best known for his work with Metallica), sending out a strong signal that Bublé should reach out to unlikely collaborators more often. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Buble Swinging and Singing Softly - A VERY Good Effort.......2007-07-19

The follow-up to Buble's last effort, the terrific CD/DVD, which featured his wonderful self-penned song, "Home," may not have some of the energy and verve of that set (and that incredible concert), but this is STILL a fine collection of songs, with several standouts: "Everything," another of Buble's own compositions is upbeat, fun, and swinging (even if some of the lyrics are a bit weak); "I've Got the World on a String," which features members of the band calling out his name, is another winner, and beautifully arranged; "Wonderful Tonight," works perfectly as a Latin tinged duet, which will remind some of Sinatra's work with Antonio Carlos Jobim; and "Dream," which concludes the CD, might be something you'll hear on a late night jazz station and LOVE. The CD is somewhat uneven - I'm not sure we need another version of "Always on My Mind," but it's still well done. "Lost," another Buble composition, doesn't really build well as a song, and "That's Life" doesn't work nearly as well as the great Sinatra original. BUT - there's no doubt this man is a talented singer, who can clearly sing in a variety of styles (if you've seen him in concert, imitating Michael Jackson and others, you'll know he's capable of continued excellence in his singing, phrasing, and song selection). I'd love to hear him do a version of "Alfie," for instance, to sing more of his own upbeat compositions, and collaborate more with some great female singers, but THIS work, though not a completely satisfying CD, is still VERY good and worth purchasing. Many of the songs catch up to you, as Buble, singing without apparent enhancement, allows his voice to be a little rawer than in his debut album. He sounds real and true - and his band, as always, is beyond first rate. They are completely in synch, as they are in their concerts. I think, to quote one of the songs on this fine CD, "The Best is Yet To Come," holds true for this great entertainer. He seems sure to produce some kind of concept album, along the lines of "In the Wee Small Hours," ala Sinatra - and I think he can pick better material in some places. But his voice, his band, some of the fine songs, especially his own hit tune, "Everything," make this a MUST for fans. Bubleland is STILL a fine place to be! And the man is building a terrific body of work.

This is one of the best releases in his growing catalogue of jazz/pop recordings. He's still proping himself up with his Sinatra wantabe interpretations; which is a shame because his voice is strong enough to develop his own material and style. This is a pleasant compilation of songs with a little "salsa" flavor. Easy on the ears and great for dancing.

Awesome CD.......2007-07-15

This CD was such a great purchase. I'd heard "Everything" on the radio but didn't know who sang it and was asking everyone I knew if they knew the song. Luckily, I heard it on the radio again a few days later and I'd ordered it before the song had finished as I loved it so much. Even though I bought the CD for just one song, the rest of it is so great also. "Lost" has such moving lyrics and such a beautiful tune and then there's some great big band numbers.

If you like this genre of music, you'll love this CD.

I love the music on this disc.......2007-07-14

Les Paul and his wife Mary Ford are legends in jazz music. My favorite track on this disc is "I'm Sitting On The Top Of The World." Nobody could play the electric guitar as masterfully as Les Paul. Mary Paul's voice is so sensual on the track "I'm A Fool To Care." I love this track. "Tennessee Waltz" and "Vaya Con Dios" are classic romantic tunes. These tracks makes me think of someone special. "In The Mood" is another excellent song that puts me in a great mood. "Bye Bye Blues" is an uptempo track that stands out as one of the best here. "I Really Don't Want To Know" is a pretty song. I love the tenderness in Mary Ford's voice on this track. This disc is filled with great music.

This must be one of the best CD's available letting new comers to LP&MF hear some of their best tracks from the 50's and they have not dated since then. Unfortunately CAPITAL in their wisdom have omitted others which should have been included. I can name but a few:- La Rossita - Mac the Knife - Three little words - Magic Melody - Hold me in your arms - Old Mexico - What is this thing called love - Walking & Whistling Blues - I'm Jealous - By the light of the Silvery Moon - Chicken Reel. and I'm sure there's more. So it looks like we'll have to wait till Les reaches his 100th Birthday before we see a Box Set.
I am tempted to wait - that's if I can manage to live as long as Les. He's doing great, and I hope he will still be playing when he reaches 100! Well done mate!

Must have.......2005-11-02

The recordings sound very modern. You can't tell this wasn't recorded yesterday; just listen to the samples. Les Paul had an inimitable guitar style. The man was the master, and teamed with the easy, lilting style of Mary Ford AKA (Iris) Colleen Summers (who started out in Western music), how could they not score? This music, while a product of its era, is timeless. This is perfection. This is the stuff dreams are made of. I usually review Classical music, but what can be more classic than this?

I only regret that a box set is not available, since I love everything that Les Paul and Mary Ford ever waxed. A particular favorite of mine that is missing is the Hawaiian love song, "The Moon of Manakoora". It is every bit as beautiful as the version recorded by Alfred Ahola Apaka, the crooning voice of Hawaii, and is recorded better. There are other notable omissions that I won't tire you with here, but this is the best set available until a box set is released. Absolutely wonderful music making. Curl up to the fire and warm with it; You'll love how it gets you in the mood.

Although the music of Norah Jones continues to blend pop, soul, folk, and country with a seasoning of jazz, her third album for Blue Note is the first where she's written (or collaborated on) all the material. Beneath the smooth surface lie darker strains on the album-opening "Wish I Could" (about a boyfriend lost to war), intimations of mortality in "The Sun Doesn't Like You," and the post-election horrors of "My Dear Country." The last seems to channel the inspiration of Brecht/Weill, while the equally bleak "Sinkin' Soon" is set to a jaunty Dixieland rag. Throughout, Jones's vocal intimacy and melodic warmth remain as disarmingly understated as ever. The soulful "Thinking of You," the countryish "Wake Me Up," and the syncopated "Be My Somebody" reflect the captivating style of her previous work. What's not to love about Norah? She once again gives us super music on this cd. Can't think of anything bad to say about it.

The Voice and the Soul.......2007-07-15

Bought this CD after hearing "Wish I Could" on the radio; this is a gorgeous, hauntingly beautiful, moving song.

I too am surprised to see the strongly negative reviews here. Her 3 CDs have sold more than 39 million copies worldwide, so there is clearly a strong fan base somewhere! The added plus on this third CD is that Norah wrote or co-wrote every song, so we are gaining a glimpse into her musical soul as well as hearing the beauty of her voice.

There are some real gems here. "Sinkin' Soon" evokes 1930's jazz with its honky-tonk piano (played by Norah) and its wah-wah trombone. "Until the End" has country roots. "Not My Friend" is a mellow, dreamy, wistful song with dagger-sharp lyrics. "My Dear Country" is a lament about what election day hath wrought. The final title cut, "Not Too late," winds things up on an optimistic note.

It is not surprising that Norah has good musical genes. Her father, Ravi Shankar, brought his sitar to the Beatles and Indian music to a global audience. Norah's seamless blending of country, jazz, blues, pop, and folk brings great talent and aural delight to a new musical generation.

Not as strong as the her first two releases.......2007-07-11

In my opinion, this CD is simply not as strong as her first two CDs. Most of the songs are fine, but forgettable. A couple are just a bit weird-sounding for my taste. Out of her 3 CDs, I preferred "Come Away With Me", although I understand that Ms. Jones feels that her current CD is a truer reflection of her musical style.

Right after I bought this CD, I was privileged enough to see her in concert. She is clearly talented, and has an accomplished band. The concert was wonderful and was over before I knew it. Her performance got rave reviews in the local newspaper the next day.

I look forward to her next release, mostly to see how her artistic style evolves.

Not her best.......2007-07-11

I own all three of her CDs. Come Away with Me is the best IMO. Her passion and talent shine through. Each song was worthy to be on the CD. In Feels Like Home, it seemed she relaxed a bit, had a little more fun, but lost some of the passion, a couple of the songs were not up to what I expected, but passed as entertaining. This third CD is the worst. My impression was that now that she has made a name for herself she can put any track on a CD without much scrutiny. I have listened to it a few times, but it just doesn't do anything exciting for me. A big disappointment.

Insipid and inoffensive, uninspired and uninspiring.......2007-07-08

That's about the highest praise I can muster for this effort. It isn't that it's BAD, but it just never achieves "lift off."

I wish I could wax enthusiastic, but after quite a few listens at this point, I don't think my opinion is likely to change appreciably.

Time for Ms. Jones to find her passion. It isn't evident on this CD.

Having long since shed their image as hip-hop's clown princes, the Beastie Boys now bring what feels like their emeritus recording, a celebratory instrumental memoir of all of the influences (except punk) that brought them to their secure place among hip-hop's fickle elite. The party opens with the aptly titled "B for My Name," its plodding bounce staking claim to the mid-tempo path the album treads almost throughout. "14th St. Break" picks up the pace, especially in the auxiliary percussion breakdown, complete with rally whistle. Then, beginning with "Suco de Tangerina," the album drops into a deep groove cut from dub- and dancehall-tinged ostinati that carry through a full third of its tracks. Among these, "The Gala Event" suffers from a lack of developmental motion that characterizes many of these tracks, but highlights still abound. The CD from a rap band with no words..........2007-07-16

The Beasties have done it again. This is the album a lot of fans wanted- after hearing tastes of the band's musicianship on songs included in previous albums, one can finally hear the funky stylings of what has been one of the most progressive and influential bands of the last 20 years. Casual fans may not get it- for them, I suggest using it as background music for other activities. In that setting, the hooks may draw you in, or, at worst, you create a non-obtrusive atmosphere of funk driven by vintage street cred.

Actually, There is a "Mix-Up" Here..........2007-07-16

...somebody replaced the new Beastie Boys disc with a 1960's cheesy lounge record!

At least that's what it sounds like to this Beastie fan. I've bought all of their albums, but after one listen to the "Mix-Up," I'm going to have to leave this one on the shelf. The "5 Burroughs" album wasn't perfect but it was a step in the right direction (from the bizarre "Hello Nasty"), but this new "all instrumental" album is a bore to listen to. I think that some people will really like it--perhaps I'm just missing their sense of "irony".

More than likely you will fit into one of these three categories, each with a different take on this album:

1. You like the BB's as hip hop artists, especially the funny lyrics, and enjoy the old school beats. You like Hello Nasty and To the Five Boroughs more than Check Your Head. Chances are good that you won't care for this album---don't buy it.

2. Your favorite album is Check Your Head and you really like the funky instrumental interludes on that and other albums of that era. BUT, you are not an avid listener of funk/acid jazz and are not familiar with Medeski, Martin, and Wood, etc. You will probably like this album and should buy it.

3. You fit into Category 2 EXCEPT that you ARE familiar with MMW, recent collaborations by John Scofield, Grey Boy Allstars, etc. You will be disappointed in this album because it just doesn't measure up. Frankly, this album comes off as very amateurish and shows that, though the BB's have developed some chops, they can't pull off a full album of instrumentals. The interludes in Check Your Head were just that---interludes---and you can't support a full album on interlude music. Not being a hater---I love the BB's too---but check out any of Stanton Moore's albums and you will see exactly what I mean.

Wow. Some of the reviews on this page leave my mouth agape with wonder. What in the world is so very wrong with this album? There are a few that are saying there's "no fun' in this record or the 'dynamic is gone'(whatever that means).What record are you listening to? To all of you naysayers I say Fooey and double Fooey! THIS ALBUM IS GREAT. It's a groovy little record period. But that's all it is. It doesn't have to be the next Sgt. Peppers or Paul's Boutique or whatever. You have to take a look at it on it's own. I will say this for this album, no other band is making music like this right now. This is completly original music. Why aren't these guys given the chance to grow and expand? If you don't like this album fine, whatever. Go listen to your 12" of Brass Monkey until your parents kick you out of the basement.
For those of you out there who want something a little groovy and different, get it. Meanwhile I'm going to mix myself a gimlet and listen to a great little combo called the Beastie Boys. Their new album is cool as hell.

Play this CD anytime........2007-07-10

Just put this CD on when you're not specifically trying to listen to music. Just let it play. It's fun, but can't be the center of attention like the Beastie's cds that you're used to. It's not all that entertaining to sit down and listen to (like when driving) even for a fan of jambands like myself, but it's the perfect album for anytime.

Yes, Teddy Thompson's parents are renowned folkies Richard and Linda Thompson. And, sure, he's spent the past few years touring the world with his good friend Rufus Wainwright, who recently wrote a song about their inimitable relationship called "Nobody's off the Hook." But it's Thompson's rich, twangy voice that deserves the spotlight. After turning out two thoroughly underappreciated albums of original material--it would be pushing it to even call them cult favorites--the lovelorn singer-songwriter takes on a dozen classic country tunes on Up Front and Down Low. It's a good fit, the bitter sentiments the inform his own work paired with the sterling melodies of Ernest Tubb's "Walking the Floor Over You" and Elvis Presley's "I'm Left, You're Right, She's Gone." Thompson gives each of the tunes a masterful makeover, polishing them up with an all-star cast of players that includes Iris DeMent, Tift Merritt, and Marc Ribot. Wainwright offers string his own "Down Low" into the mix without breaking the mood. to do country covers. Sure, with his pedigree he gets the finest musicians and broods over his cult following a la Rufus Wainwright, but this wreaks of contractual agreement.

Lean close, Teddy...write your own songs. No you aren't a great songwriter yet and yes, you have issues with Richard and Linda as your parents, but you get no sympathy from this listener.

This album could have been done better by about 1200 country artists just in Tennessee alone.

Maybe you should join Van Morrison on a country tribute tour.

I guess this is technically a country album, but he brings a very folk/alt vibe to these songs. The result is just beautiful. Really, from start to finish. The emotion carried in his voice is so very moving. Just so soulful and touching.
If country isn't your "thing" I still say there is a place in any alt-rock collection for this CD. Perfect for a night of missing that certain someone. Perfect for a night of drowning your sorrows. Perfect for that long trip you didn't want to make in the first place. Ah, it's just perfect.

No longer "just" the son of.............................2007-07-19

Richard and Linda Thompson. I first heard of Teddy Thompson on the Brokeback Mountain soundtrack and have purchased all of his CD's. This one is no disappointment. As a country music fan, I love this CD so far, after just 2 listens. Teddy hits all the right notes, metaphorically speaking, and uses just the right amount of great backup vocals and musicians. I am taking a road trip this weekend and can't wait to crank up the speakers and listen to this CD several times in about 6 hours.

He's too cool for the room (so join the cult).......2007-07-18

When last I considered Teddy Thomp'son, he was building his cult. A very elite cult, because 'Separate Ways seemed to be so special that you could say, well, a lot of people just didn't have ears good enough for it.

Except it wasn't "special." And it wasn't "too good." It was great writing and great music and a remarkable voice, start to finish, without a single dud. I don't know why only a few of my nearest and dearest flipped for it. Maybe because it was depressing, in a wonderfully funny way.

Like this line: "I wish when the phone rang/it wasn't always you."

Not exactly a universal sentiment, is it?

So let's call Teddy Thompson an acquired taste --- until the day one of his songs becomes an unlikely hit and tens of thousands rush back to fall in love with all the great music they so breezily rejected.

And what of the follow-up to "Separate Ways"?

It's no follow-up at all. "Upfront & Down Low" is country. Classic country, if you will: songs by George Jones, Dolly Parton, Merle Haggard, the Everly Brothers, Elvis. Thompson uses a standard backup band, but he adds a string section, courtesy of the arranger responsible for the strings on Nick Drake's CDs.

Sounds like a vanity project? Not in the least. Teddy Thompson --- who didn't hear music that wasn't country until he was 16 --- understands this music completely. And delivers it authentically. But that understates. What happens in "Upfront & Down low" is captured magic, the alchemy of great taste and a compelling voice.

I went to see Teddy Thompson preview this CD in a downtown club. It was one of those rare nights: a small room, no more than a hundred people in the audience, all of them very much on the singer's side. Two violinists, a cellist and a string bass player came onstage first, then a drummer and a slide guitarist, then Thompson. Hard to miss him --- he was wearing a white suit. "I'm from the corporate office of Willie Wonka," he explained.

Naturally he apologized for the tone of the songs: "These songs are depressing. That's what country music is about."

But the songs needed no apology. They were flawless, if not exactly fun, and the title song, which he wrote, just might be the best. That song was, of course, the most depressing. Funny. I can't get it out of my head.

Fresh and emotional interpretations........2007-07-18

Judging by the quality of his two previous solo albums, Teddy Thompson's "son of folk legends Richard and Linda Thompson" tag will soon become redundant: he's a singer and songwriter of very high quality in his own right, with a rich voice and some choice songs that moves easily between pop, folk and rock.
On his latest record, "Upfront & Down Low" he covers country songs of the classic era.
These finely crafted pieces, marked by mournful wit, were penned by writers like Ernest Tubb, Dolly Parton and Boudleaux Bryant and made famous by singers like Merle Haggard, George Jones and Elvis Presley.
Though a first-rate songwriter himself, Thompson only put one of his own pieces into the mix, "Down Low", in which he sings "You're better off dead/ with a bullet in your head/ than comin' back to me..."
He hired the renowned Robert Kirby, the man who distinctively and innovatively scored the prim strings on Nick Drake's albums, to arrange a tidy clutch of cello, violin and viola on the tracks.
"My Blue Tears," also from the album, sounds great with minimal instrumentation, because Rufus Wainwright contributed a "wacky" string arrangement for the piece.
(Just for the record "No One's off the Hook" on Wainwright's new album Release the Stars was written for and about Teddy, who continues to tour with Rufus as an opening act ).
No doubting, of course, that Teddy's choice of guest musicians sets a hell of a seal on the proceedings too - there's his illustrious father Richard Thompson on guitar, his mate Rufus , guitarist Marc Ribot, David Mansfield, Jenni Muldaur, Tift Merritt and Iris DeMent on vocals , Greg Leinz for a start!
But whatever, it's Teddy's excellent choice of material and his very own musical personality that's stamped on these thirteen tracks, encompassing a basic honesty of approach and harnessing a gentle power that's very attractive indeed.

Navigating Van Morrison's extensive catalog since 1993 is a formidable task even diehard fans might not want to attempt. I won't call this definitive, but the collection's got some previously unreleased and seldom heard numbers that merit the price and hype. This is a very listenable CD that's something you can just stick in the changer and let it play. Definitely worth the money.

Continuing writers block.......2007-07-10

Despite having most of this already I paid out my money and what did I get? A reasonable overview with some obscurities, one of which "Blue and Green" is worth the cost on its own. While the music is all first class the compiling has created some jarring between tracks. I've always loved The Skiffle Sessions album but Lost John between Leaves Come Falling Down and Tupelo Honey sounds bizarre. Nearly all the tracks he has re-recorded are done better in their original incarnation and one gets the feeling that with this, the movie "best of" and the country abomination Pay The Devil before them that he has nothing to say at present. I love Morrison's music and sincerely hope there is more of it to come, its now been a fair number of years since there has been an album of original material and he is overdue for his muse to return.

The Legend Continues..........2007-07-04

This 'Best Of' is a must for any Vanatic (Van fan)... but more importantly it is a must for anyone who thinks Van's career ended in the 1970s... all the tracks on "Vol. 3" are from 1993-2005 - Van's later writing and singing are well represented on this compilation and with a superb supporting cast of John Lee Hooker, Ray Charles, Tom Jones, Carl Perkins, Lonnie Donegan, Bobby "Blue" Bland and the great Georgie Fame as they come along for the journey...

Van is still a mighty force in a world that needs more soul and less pop.

An amazing compilation of Van Morrison's enchanting and haunting melodies. Although I am not a big jazz or blues fan, he has managed to put those two elements together in a way that is a lyrical treat. The melodies are addictive and very catchy. As he has matured, his renditions of some of his earlier works are performed now with more conviction, passion, and confidence than ever before. Van is an extremely talented musician and lyricist that successfully impacts music for the ages. I could listen to Van Morrison 24/7.

Michael Brecker's Best Ever........2007-07-09

I think other reviewers have said it better than I could when it comes to Michael Brecker's final album "Pilgrimage" so, I'll be brief. This is his best album ever. The playing as well as the musicianship between Brecker and his all-star line-up of Pat Metheny, Herbie Hancock, Jack DeJohnette, John Patitucci and Brad Mehldau is stellar on every track here. There isn't one weak track recorded here.
"Pilgrimage" features his best playing and his best compositions - truly a testament and high mark in the legacy of this respected sax player. If you don't believe me, read the other reviews here and then buy this CD.
An Instant Classic for 2007.

If you are a fan of Michael Brecker this is a must have. As if the fact that it will be the last cd he ever releases isn't enough reason to purchase it, it is also a remarkable musical masterpiece. I honestly do not know how he managed to play at a level that is above the usual while practically on his death bed. The accompanying musicians are as good as they get as well, so the interaction between players and overall playing is just spectacular throughout.

It is not just the timbre of Norah Jones's voice that is mature beyond her 22 years. Her assured phrasing and precise time are more often found in older singers as well. She is instantly recognizable, blending shades of Billie Holiday and Nina Simone without sounding like anyone but herself. Any way you slice it, she is a singer to be reckoned with. Her readings of the Hank Williams classic "Cold Cold Heart" and Hoagy Carmichael's "The Nearness of You" alone are worth the price of the CD. Jones's own material, while not bad, pales a bit next to such masterpieces. They might have fared better had she and producer Arif Mardin opted for some livelier arrangements, taking better advantage of brilliant sidemen such as Bill Frisell, Kevin Breit, and Brian Blade; or if the tunes had simply been given less laconic performances. Jones has all the tools; what will come with experience and some careful listening to artists like J.J. Cale and Shirley Horn is the knack of remaining low-key without sounding sleepy--sometimes less is not, in fact, more. --Michael Ross

I knew that Nora Jones was good music but i had no idea just how good...My sister-in-law bought me this CD for Father's Day...i have listened to it 3 times today. The way i would describe her lyrics and delivery is equal to "Musical Rose Petals". So smooth and so inviting is her voice. I really love the Piano work also. Her birth name being "Geethali",Nora Jones along with the likes of Michael Buble have added a nice,new,fresh selection of music to today's currently enemic sound. This album made her only the second artist ever to sweep the "Big Four" being Album,Song,Record,& Artist of the Year at the Grammy Awards in 2003. Standouts for me include: "Come Away With Me","Don't Know Why", and i really like her rendition of Hank Williams SR.'s "Cold,Cold Heart". With her throw back to Billie Holiday/Roberta Flack days voice coupled with a very welcomed piano based style, Nora Jones can take me away anytime! Okay, she's not quite a standards specialist, but a lot of people think Norah Jones is well on her way to setting some new standards of her own.

The daughter of famed Indian sitarist Ravi Shankar, Jones grew up in Dallas with her mother, and her work is firmly rooted in the dry Texas soil. The youngest in this survey (she was born in 1979), Jones burst on the scene in 2002 with this debut album of nine original songs plus a handful of country and pop standards. Renowned for her sweet and soulful set of pipes, Jones has often been compared to Billie Holiday. There's also a touch of Roberta Flack and Emmylou Harris in there.

Come Away with Me is an honest-to-goodness country-blues recording that you can sit back with on the front porch rocker on a brisk autumn afternoon. Sort of like an early James Taylor, Jones mixes a little bit of country, folk, and soul into a collection that's the perfect antidote to today's insincere fare. The public must have sensed the same thing, because it bought this CD in boxcar loads, and in 2003 Jones walked away with eight Grammies, including album of the year and best new artist.

The title track, written by Jones, is the first new song I've heard in a long time that's utterly believable. "Come away with me and I'll never stop loving you," she begs, and it's as though she's singing it to you, personally. To Hank Williams's "Cold Cold Heart" she brings an R & B feel, petitioning in anguish to her lover man to come back, body and soul. "I've Got to See You Again" is an exquisite modern torch song in the same vein, while "One Flight Down" is an upbeat tune with chord progressions right out of Paul McCartney's Wings songs, like "Carry That Load." She ends with Hoagy Carmichael's "The Nearness of You." Close your eyes, let Jones's words envelope you with their soulful caress, and you'll sense that she's a lot nearer than your living room speakers.

His sophomore studio follow-up largely turns on the same formula that helped make his considerable vocal prowess so attractive to mainstream audiences, mixing the nigh flawless, if expected Sinatra-channeling ("I've Got You Under My Skin") with more playful and inviting renditions of pop standards like the Gershwin's "A Foggy Day in London Town," "Feeling Good," "Try A Little Tenderness" and Cole Porter's "I've Got You Under My Skin." But it's the eclectic mix of more contemporary material the singer seasons them with -- apt tribute to Bublé hero Bobby Darin -- that keeps him walking the narrow tightrope between artistic intrigue (a blues-tinged vamp of Holland-Dozier-Holland's "How Sweet It Is," Leon Russell's lovely "Song For You," with a guest turn by Chris Botti) and the kitsch-laden abyss ("Quando, Quando, Quando"'s Euro-centric duet with Nelly Furtado, a ring-a-ding-fling with the Beatles' "Can't Buy Me Love" that echoes fellow Canadian crooner/rival Matt Dusk's more successful flirtation with Lennon-McCartney). If you like easy listening music that`s reminiscent of Frank Sinatra, then you`ll love Michael Buble. I haven`t heard any artist this fantastic in years. This CD is the one you put in when you want to relax.

This is a great CD - if you like Michael Buble's current CD (Call Me Irresponsible) you will like this one as well. This album has more slow songs on it than the current album, but still sexy and fun.

He just can't do the blues....only slightly convincing.......2007-07-02

I like Mike. He's a talented guy, but this, and the Call Me Irresponsible CD are just ok. He makes a few attempts in areas where he is not proficient, doesn't have the training, or the voice, but makes a decent go of it. However, the end result simply isn't convincing. He should stick with covers as he did in his opener, and even then, try not to make them his own by changing the musical accompaniment vastly. Good Jazz/Crooner, stick with it! Don't let the producers get in your way.

Greatest Hits? YESSSSSSSSSSSS.......2007-04-16

Perhaps at the time, these were considered their greatest hits. I've had my LP and CD for a very long time. I can't even remember. I love it. She was like an angel singing with herself. They seemed to adore one another on the TV show. She - so beautiful - and he - just beaming at her.
Maybe it's time to do another greatest hits and call it "More Greatest Hits". Other singers do it. And maybe all of us didn't agree with their first "greatest hit". Hey, you guys out there who do these kinds of things, what's taken so long?

Every fan of Guitar music will appreciate this Album.
Les Paul is not only a great Guitarist he is an inventor of modern recording technology.
Dual track recording and his use of up to eight tracks made him an music industry icon.
Mary Ford's strong clear voice makes this duo complete.

Some Glaring Omissions!.......2005-08-06

I'm a huge fan of Les Paul and after reviewing the track list on this CD, I don't see how anyone in their right mind could call it an "all time greatest hits" collection.

While tracks such as "Mockin' Bird Hill", "The World is Waiting for the Sunrise", and "Vaya Con Dios" among the duo's best loved and best known songs, I find the omission of "How High the Moon", one the their biggest hits, to be unforgiveable. Equally astonishing is why "Dry My Tears", the theme song of Les & Mary's 50s radio show, and "Cryin'", arguably the best song Mary Ford has ever sung, were excluded. I would much rather have had those tracks included in the disc than the cover version of Patti Page's "Tennessee Waltz", and the ersatz "Meet Mr. Callaghan". It's also hard to understand why the only Les Paul solo instrumental track on this disc is "Bye Bye Blues". "Lover", the song that propelled Les into the spotlight, and "Nola", a song that enjoyed worldwide popularity, were inexplicably left out.

While this is a decent collection of the work of Les Paul and Mary Ford, it is definitely NOT their all time greatest hits. The record label ought to be sued for false advertising.

Refreshing!.......2004-12-31

I've just discovered this pair, and I'm so sorry I haven't heard them until now. Being a jazz vocalist, I'm always looking for challenging material. I have a few CDs in this genre, but the styling, and caliber of the musicians puts my other CDs to shame. I suspect k.d. lang has borrowed styling from the likes of Mary Ford, as their voices seem to lilt in the same fashion. Les Paul's ability makes me wonder if there are more than two or three guitars playing simultaneously. Many of these cuts are very subtle in their exhibition of complicated material. For those so inclined to listen, it's an auditory adventure.
