A piece of history.......2006-06-03

Many of the songs on this recording are not available in sheet music, and although the sound quality isn't "leading edge" it makes me feel as though I am listening to actual performers back in the 30's & 40's, with young and gifted singers like Frank Sinatra, Jo Stafford, and Mel Torme, as well as others who are nameless or unknown to me on this album, and a delight to listen to. Manhattan Tower is why I bought this CD, and I got so much more from it than I bargained for. The illusion I have when I play it is that I am a young jazz artist in New York, feeling the pulse of the city and filling up with everything about being a part of New York.

A BIG disappointment!.......2004-08-19

I bought this CD for the Slaughter on Tenth Avenue soundtrack ballet by Richard Rodgers and Lennie Hayton. But none of the tracks on this CD can be appreciated. It is a mono recording, and that immediately leaves you with a very incomplete sound. No amount of treble and bass adjustment can eliminate the awful tinny sound throughout the disc.

Best of the 3 Prestige CDs.......2005-03-04

In 1965 Baker returned to the US and in a massive recording session, recorded enough material for 5 LPs. These were later reissued on 3 CDs; although the music on all of them is consistently good, this one is the best of the three. "Cherokee" and "Bevan beeps" are excellent, as are the 2 blues compositions "Chabootie" and "Carpsie's groove," both taken fairly slow. George Coleman on tenor and Kirk Lightsey on piano are in great form, too. Recommended.

JALOUSIE/ STAR DUST- Arthur Fiedler & The Boston Pops.......2007-02-22

If you're a classical music lover, you can't go wrong with this great combination of two nostalgic gems, originally recorded on Lp format by Arthur Fiedler, conducting the Boston Pops Orchestra.
"Jalousie" was definitely one of Fiedler's finest works. The album theme "Jalousie" or "Jealousie" based on a tango composed by Gade, is a work of art. I first heard Fiedler's version of this great music master piece watching the old "B.F.Goodrich" musical program on television back during the early 60's and I immediately realized Fiedler's Boston Pops version of this great classic was absolutely the very best I have ever heard. This great album is complemented by other gorgeous classics, like "Il Guarany", "Jamaican Rhumba" "Danze Piemontese" and others. The second album included on this CD "Stardust" is another recorded milestone by Fiedler, "Stardust", "Clair de Lune" and other beautiful classics will simply delight you. Maestro Arthur Fiedler will always be remembered by music fans as Mr.Boston Pops. Fortunately a portion of his musical works with the Pops have been re-issued for us to enjoy and reminisce. I very highly recommend it. Do not miss this one.

I don't know if this is the full concert or just excerpts. Most of the folks here (all but Lorna Luft actually) were all senior citzens at the time so don't expect their voices to be a strong as in the old movies of yore, still it must have been a thrill for this British crowd to see stars from many decades ago in the flesh at long last. I bought this CD because I love Dorothy Lamour and Jane Russell. Lamour's "South Seas Melody" is actually a quite long melody of her famous movie hits, many of them from non-South Seas films. The lady was a month from turning 75 at the time, she would make her last appearances in the next few years before passing away in 1996 at 81. Her voice is frail at times, yet other times lively and charming, clearly the audience is thrilled to see her judging by the huge ovation she receives at the end of the number. Jane Russell has a briefer hits melody which is oddly includes part of "Tall Man" from her movie of the same name but not the chorus which identifies the song! She sings well too at 68 and her duet of "Bosom Buddies" with Arlene Dahl (in quite good voice) is a lot of fun for both the audience and the CD listener. An odd cd but with nearly all these legends either now gone or quite into retirement, one to be rather cherished.
