Late 50s reunion band that simply jumps out at you..........2003-09-08
This entire series of the "Dream Band", with arrangements by Bill Holman, and great work by Med Flory, Conte Candoli, Joe Maini, and Mel Lewis driving the proceedings is worth the whole set - come to think of it, why isn't there a boxed set of these? From Gibbs' first countdown ("UHH, OOOH, EEE, AHHH...) the swinging is relaxed (not low-energy, just relaxed) and a joy. Great COOL Big Band Live recordings.
you will be movin' and groovin'.......2002-05-16
adding this to your collection. Gibbs played with Goodman in his early years as vibraphonist and that alone brings not just superb craftsmanship but a very swinging head and this does not let you down. The drive, execution and sheer fun that shines on this CD which chronicles live stuff from the late 50's (and beautifully rendered) will have you smiling any hour you turn it on...Mel's sticks and feet toss the beat all over with the thump
and verve of a careeening locomotive while the musicians play their hearts out behind Gibb's mastery and musical wit.
Talk about swinging!.......1999-12-24
I don't know why I bought this albumn, but thank God you can't wear out a CD as it is one of the most enjoyable I own. The Bill Holman arrangements are absolutely as swinging today as the day they were done. The drums of Mel Lewis...impeccable and drive the band to great heights. The album will put you in a good mood. It's bright, fun, creative and one of the most swinging CD you could own. I love it!

WONDERFUL PERSONNEL.......2007-07-06
My very first album, an LP in 1957, was "Vibes on Velvet". Gibbs played his vibes during the entire tune, "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes". I have so many memories tied to that album. In this one, Gibbs was tired and asked Conte Candoli to play the solo. It's beautiful. Pete Jolly has always been one of my favorite piano players and, like Candoli, can really "wing it." West Coast Jazz at it's finest.
gimme some vibes.......2007-06-08
From volumn one to this the last vol. six, every tune just swings and swings, From Gibb's vibes to Med Flory's sax Conte Condoli's horn and Pete Jolly on piano, you'll want to tap your feet and grab your pretty one and dance.

Like I mentioned before...where's the BOX SET?.......2003-09-12
It's rather hard to believe that one of the best, and baddest, Big Bands of the modern era could have 5 seperate LPs, CDs out there of their stuff, and yet no deluxe Box Set, replete with pictures, info, etc...(are you listening, PROPER?). This CD, along with the rest, just simply rips, roars, and romps through a variety of jazz standards (including "Airegin", "Avalon", "It Might As Well Be Spring", and, of course, "Flying Home") with ease, humor, and plain old swing. This is an "uncompromising, 'kicks' band", as plainly stated on the liner notes to the LP, by John Tynan - and man does it ever show! Do yourself a favor...pick up at least one of the five volumes out there and see for yourself what all my fussin' is about.

My favorite Big Band CD of all time.......2004-01-03
This one has the most memorable original compositions and original arrangements of the 6 IMHO. Nose Cone is just a barn burner of a chart and hearing Terry yelling YAAAAAAAAA during the final shout chorus makes the hair on my back stand up and shout "this is what life is all about"...It's better than the greatest. Honest :-)

This is a fast up beat album. Less background noise than than Vols. 1,2 & 3. Since recorded live much more refined placement of "mikes" I had the original LP(lost it to my blk. Lab, he ate it) When I heard they put it on cd.it was purchased immediately. I have listened to it for 41 years. If you enjoy The Clayton Bandw/ Milt Jackson, Bob Florence you'll love this one....TT

ONE OF THE 10 BEST IN THE LAST 50 YEARS!.......2003-07-10
I FIRST HAD THIS ALBUM BACK AROUND 1962 AND WORE THE GROOVES OUT LISTENING TO IT. THE BAND IS SIMPLY THE CREAM OF THE WEST-COAST CROP OF JAZZ SWINGERS. FRANK ROSOLINO'S BONE WORK IS WORTH THE PRICE OF THE ALBUM. THE TUNE "THE BIG CAT" IS ONE OF MY ALL TIME FAVORITES. CONTE CANDOLI, JOE MAINI, MED FLORY, JACK NIMITZ, AMONG MANY OTHERS ARE AT THEIR PRIME. I OWN HUNDREDS OF CONTEMPORARY BIG BAND JAZZ CDS AND ALBUMS AND CONSIDER THIS TO BE IN THE TOP 10 OF THE ESSENCE OF WHAT BIG BAND JAZZ IS ALL ABOUT.

Required Listening..........2004-01-23
Well, it ought to be...This is quite possibly a perfect big band album. Anyone who likes Jazz, thinks they might, or anyone who Hates Jazz should have this disc. If you Love Jazz, You'll Love it more, If you Hate Jazz, It'll change your mind! From the best version of Moonglow since Benny Goodman's to the ROCKIN' The Claw, you will listen to this disc over and over and over. In fact, you might want to just go ahead and buy two copies, cause you'll wear out the first one. Terry Gibbs is possibly the most underrated Jazz player in history. His band is simply amazing on every track, and his cool swing will make you rethink what you thought cool was. (In case you can't tell, I get really excited by this recording.) In my humble opinion, I think everyone ought to own this disc, as well as parade Terry around on our shoulders for his greatness as well as courage in putting and keeping this band together AFTER the Big Bands had died out. Its my understanding that during some of the particularly dry patches he paid the band out of his own pocket just to keep the band together. You may never hear a tighter band, or one that is having as much fun! BUY THIS NOW!!!!!!

Terry Gibbs's best-known dream band was the big band documented on an acclaimed series of unearthed recordings from the late 1950s and early '60s. His least-known dream band is the one featured on this long out-of-print album, which combines a bop-minded jazz quartet headed by Gibbs (on vibraphone and marimba) and a quartet devoted to traditional Jewish music led by his older brother, drummer Sol Gage. (Born Julius Gubenko, Gibbs started out in his violinist father Abe Gubenko's Radio Novelty Orchestra, which Gage later inherited.) The album's stylistic division of labor--bop-driven jazz sections trade off with straightforward Jewish parts--sometimes reduces the music to a battle of the band. But it's a lively experiment that anticipates the recent klezmer revival in jazz; just listen to the swinging and soaring takes on "Bei Mir Bist du Schön" and "My Yiddishe Momme"--and let's not forget Ziggy Elman's "And the Angels Sing." Adding to the offbeat nature of the session is the presence on piano of Alice McCord, later to be known as Alice Coltrane. --Lloyd Sachs
Customer Reviews:
Great Gibbs gig for at least three reasons........2007-03-09
Terry's a bit more subdued on this outing than most, but it's a swinging session if a trifle "over-arranged." Terry imports a klezmer band for some highlighting and variety, but it would have been better if he'd left the ethnic touches to his own spirited group. In his autobiography, "Good Vibes," Terry explains that the session was one of his most enjoyable and that he wanted to call it "Jew Jazz" but that Mercury changed his original title.
The album, you'd think, would remain in print if only for the presence of Alice McCleod, soon to become Ms. John Coltrane. In the book, Terry says of the date, "I was the Jew, and this African-American woman pianist was stealing the show!" (Personally, I think he's being excessively modest, perhaps conscious of Alice's later accomplishments and near-iconic stature in American music. Unlike Terry Pollard, another Detroit female pianist who played with Terry Gibbs, Alice doesn't "lock" into the time and swing; her many-noted, fluid and legato lines are strangely unengaging in this context.)
Klezmer-Jazz ...Fusion?.......2006-05-09
While I dig the Jewish standards and vibist Terry Gibbs compositions presented here,I'm not so sure about the arrangements/collaboration with his brother and drummer Sol Gage.
For me,if this was intended to be Jazz-Klezmer fusion-it just doesn't entirely fuse and as an experiment,I think the balance is a little off, beginning with the first track 'Bi Mir Bis Du Shoen'('To Me You're Beautiful' in Yiddish)which begins and ends with short riffs by Sol Gage's Klezmer- 'Jewish-style group-with
Gibbs' jazz quartet taking over everything else;I think pianist Alice McCord(who later married John Coltrane)steals the show.

Album Description
Tapping the same incredible spirit that has kept him at the forefront of jazz since the birth of bebop, vibraphone legend TERRY GIBBS delivers "Feelin' Good: Live in Studio" recorded at O'Henry Studios in Los Angeles. Famed for his energetic performances, Gibbs draws inspiration from his audience and, for "Feelin' Good," Gibbs takes a lucky crowd with him into the studio to create this memorable 2005 live recording. Backing Gibbs this time around are special guest artists ERIC ALEXANDER (Saxophone), GERRY GIBBS (Drums), JOEY DEFRANCESCO (Hammond B3 organ), DAN FAEHNLE (Guitar), and RAY ARMANDO (Congas).
Customer Reviews:
Feelin' Good is a FEEL GOOD CD!.......2005-12-07
I first heard the first track of this CD listening to NPR on a Sunday night and I had to stop on the side of the road just to fully enjoy the track. At 81, Terry Gibbs is as powerful a performer as he was almost sixty years ago.
This CD flows so smoothly you be begging for more once track twelve ends! Recorded live in a studio, vibraphonist Gibbs is backed by the ever talented Joey DeFrancesco on the Hammond B3, Eric Alexander on the sax, Dan Faehnle on guitar, Ray Armando on the congas and his own son, Gerry Gibbs on drums! As with his other releases, Gibbs performs such classics as "Misty", "This Masquerade", "Wave" and "What's New".
This is a great album to listen to whilst you drive down the PCH with the convertible top down at sunset! Whoo-eee!
It's all about the solos........2005-09-10
This CD has a collection of the greatest musicians in the game. It's not your typical mix of instruments but it works perfectly. The individual solos on vibes, guitar, B3 and sax are incredible. A must have for any serious jazz collection.
