Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars good memories for me and fun "new" songs for my children.......2007-06-27

We had ordered this for "The Dukes of Hazzard" theme song for our 4yr old and our whole family has fallen in love with the cd. It makes me want to share some of the old fun and simple shows with my children. I forgot about some of those shows. It brings back good memories for my husband and me and the songs are new and exciting for our children. It's a nice change from children's cd's, but our children still think it's fun. The sound quality is good and the songs included on the cd are a great mix. I would definately recommend this one.

5 out of 5 stars memories.......2007-02-22

5 out of 5 stars TV Theme Songs.......2007-01-13

This is a great CD for people who watch a lot of TV -especially TV LAND and reruns of old shows when shows had actual theme songs. I took the CD to work and everyone loved trying to figure out what show the songs were from.

3 out of 5 stars TV themes.......2006-07-05

Not all what I expected, not all of the tunes are the original recordings you remember as the TV themes.

5 out of 5 stars Deja Vu.......2006-02-17

Listening to these familiar themes as performed by the original artists certainly brings back wonderful memories! I was particularly pleased, not only with the quality of the pieces, but with the actual performances themselves, just as we remembered them!

4 out of 5 stars Lockhart's Debut Recording with the Boston Pops.......2004-08-13

RUNNING WILD is collection of Glenn Miller favorites and is Keith Lockhart's debut recording with the Boston Pops Orchestra. The musical quality is good. While it does not demonstrate the style that Lockhart would later develop with the orchestra, it certainly offers glimpses of what is to come. Perhaps the recording's strongest tracks are the musical numbers with guests: John Pizzarelli and the King Singers, especially the album's rendition of "Chattanooga Choo-Choo". One of Lockhart's greatest strengths is selecting guests to accompany the orchestra and this album is a foretaste of what is later to come, particularly on the Celtic and Mexican collections released later in Lockhart's tenure. While the album is good, and Lockhart seems to enjoy conducting these Big Band pieces, his rendition of "In the Mood" is missing something, which is surprising since this work is such a staple at Pops concerts, but even a not quiet the best rendition of any piece by the Boston Pops is still far better than much of what is available.

5 out of 5 stars "Runnin' Wild" will get you "In the Mood" for Big Band tunes.......2003-11-08

When John Williams stepped down as conductor of the Boston Pops Orchestra after 14 successful seasons, the talented young Keith Lockhart was chosen as his replacement. Looking more like a college freshman than music director of one of America's most famous orchestras, Lockhart has proved to be just as adept and popular as Williams and the late Arthur Fiedler.

1996's Runnin' Wild is a collection of songs made famous by Big Band era orchestra leader Glenn Miller, whose civilian and later Army Air Force bands provided audiences with music to dance to (and love to) before and during World War II. Before his mysterious death in December 1944, Miller's band and featured vocalists gave the world such beloved swing standards as "In The Mood," "Chattanooga Choo-Choo," "A String of Pearls," and his signature theme, "Moonlight Serenade."

Listen to this album, close your eyes, and the Boston Pops Orchestra transports you back to the 1940s, with young men in uniform dancing with either their wives, sweethearts, or USO girls to the fast-paced "Runnin' Wild"...gently swaying the sweet "A String of Pearls" (featured in the film The Glenn Miller Story)...or sharing that last sweet bit of lovemaking to the slow beat of "Moonlight Serenade."

Of the 16 selections, "Moonlight Serenade" is the one I am most familiar with, having heard it as incidental music or "source" material in so many World War II movies or documentaries. It's slow, gentle, romantic yet sensual, and it's the only "Glenn Miller" song actually written by the bandleader. Originally titled "Now I Lay Me Down to Weep," it was a big hit in 1939 and was the theme song for both Miller's and Tex Beneke's bands. The Pops' performance of it captures its air of nostalgia perfectly, and the clarinet solo by Thomas Martin is simply fabulous.

Modern standards singer John Pizzarelli and The King's Singers show their stuff on several tracks, most vividly so in "Chattanooga Choo-Choo," which was another chart-topping hit for Miller in 1941, the year the U.S. entered World War II. Pizzarelli has a way of channeling the great vocalists of the era, with his easy-to-listen voice and flawless delivery. The King's Singers are wonderful backup in other songs, including "Serenade in Blue" and "(I've Got a Gal in) Kalamazoo."

As a soloist, Pizzarelli shines in the more romantic (and slower) "The Nearness of You," a song that might have been on a serviceman's mind when reading a letter from his wife or girlfriend.

Another sentimental favorite where Pizzarelli performs well is 1940's "A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square," a song introduced in Britain and popularized not only by Glenn Miller but also Guy Lombardo and Sammy Kay.

Several genres also get the Glenn Miller treatment, such as opera (Verdi's "The Anvil Chorus," from Il Trovatore), vaudeville ("My Blue Heaven") blues ("The St. Louis Blues March") and even Russian traditional songs ("Volga Boatmen").

So if you want to get "In the Mood" and have a good time listening to a fun Boston Pops Orchestra album, Runnin' Wild is definitely worth getting.

5 out of 5 stars Great fun!.......2000-11-02

I bought this CD three days ago and it hasn't left my CD player since. There is nothing like waking up and putting on "In the Mood" to start your day, or listening to "Moonlight Serenade" to end it.

4 out of 5 stars Okay, but lose the cover.......2000-05-31

The Pops are a Boston institution. They have been a tradition for many and familiar to most. I have been to the Pops probably as often as to Fenway Park. I like both and find great comfort in each.

What happens with much of what the Pops attempt here is goofy. The cover art, is I presume, similar to the old Arthur Fiedler covers where he wore a funny coat or hat and tried to look less symphonic and more silly. Give it up.

The strength of the Pops is the traditional, predictable format and arrangements that are as easy to identify as your own child. That too is the unfortunate part of the Pops. There needs to be a little something new here.

So if you enjoy the traditional string arrangements and percussion of the Pops this will not disappoint you. If you are trying to get a youngster excited about this music you might more easily find an elevator and listen to the musak.

Classical arrangements, novelty music and patriotic songs are the best the Pops can provide. The swing music just doesn't do it for me.

Runnin' wild? Maybe with a walker.

5 out of 5 stars Swing at its best!.......2000-01-08

I'll tell you a little story about this CD from Keith Lockhart. I'm a baby-boomer brought up on swing and am constantly looking for quality big band recordings. I bought this album several years ago when it was first released and I loved it. Whenever I played it at home, my 18 y/o daughter gave me the business about my "old fogey" music. One day, however, I happened to come home unexpectedly and there she was in the family room with "String of Pearls" at nearly full volume. I bought her the album when she went to college and she says that she's since converted nearly half the dorm to swing. This is probably the best recording of big band sounds ever. Also look at "Pops Stoppers" which is half big band tunes and "It Don't Mean a Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing)". Both are excellent as well.

Product Description

Jeremy Nicholas writes: “Phrases that chill the heart: ‘I want a volunteer from the audience.’ ‘Is this your car, sir?’ ‘Have we shown you our holiday snaps?’ Or how about “Tonight’s lecture is on the art of writing comedy.” Go to that seminar and one thing you know for sure in advance is that you are consigning yourself to an evening devoid of any humor. Dissecting comedy, analyzing jokes or, in this case, comic songs, has all the allure of pulling off the wings of a butterfly to see how it flies. Setting off writing a comic song is rather like being your own crossword compiler, designing the grid, filling in all the squares, setting your own clues. No, it’s not, really. It’s more like taking a pile of kid’s building bricks and making a spectacular skyscraper from them. No, that’s not it either. But there are elements of both that are pertinent (a good word for seminars).” In other words, comedy (and comic songwriting) is hard work. Think of the last time you told a joke and it didn’t come off. The material was right but maybe the delivery was off. But remember the joy when the response was perfect: not only did they laugh, but you sensed the anticipation: this is going to be funny. And for this album, the anticipation certainly pays off. Anyone who grew up in the 1950’s and 1960’s will recall the wonderful humor of the works of Tom Lehrer, the classic HMV (Angel in this country) LP’s of Michael Flanders and Donald Swann. More recently we’ve seen how Stephen Sondheim and William Bolcom can easily move back and forth between the serious and the humorous. And just to prove that comedy can be serious business, we have the participation of Marc-Andre Hamelin, one of the most highly regarded concert and recital pianists as accompanist and composer, joined by his wife Jody Karin Applebaum. Her resume includes performances of Bach’s Christmas Oratorio and St. Matthew Passion, Handel’s Messiah, to contemporary works by Stephen Albert, Heitor Villa-Lobos and Gorecki. Together they have performed in New York, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Canada, England and the Middle East. Together they have recorded music of Britten, Schoenberg, Bolcom, Wolpe, Weill, Satie and Poulenc. Here both they and you have some fun for a change!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Trancendental Sense of Humor!!!!!!.......2005-07-14

As an amateur pianist, I know how it is to play music of different styles for different occasions. I also have a slightly skewered sense of humor as well as a love of serious classical music. So on my shelves I have Dr. Demento as well as Mahler, Broadway Shows as well as Shostakovich. Marc-Andre Hamelin, one of the best pianist nowadays because he makes the most hardest piece of music sound easy, is married to Jody Karin Applebaum, a wonderful singer. They have recorded the Cabaret songs of Bolcom, Britten and Fredrich Hollaender and now turn their attention to comedy songs from many eras. Much of this repertoire is taken from Sarah Walker's Cd on Hyperion. Applebaum's diction is very clear and every song has a different mood and different voices and accents when needed. Comparisons between William Bolcom and Joan Morris are inevitable. Bolcom's "Lime Jello Marshmallow Cottage Cheese Surprise" is also included. The program notes are written by Jeremy Nicholas, who has provided us with very informative program notes for Hyperion CD's, and who has written some wonderful songs such as "Usherette's Blues" and "Place Settings". Tom Lehrer's classic "Masochism Tango" makes an appearance (which is also on one of Dr. Demento's greatest hits CD's).Hamelin's recordings and performances have one thing that many pianist's do not have-HUMOR (when it's needed, of course). Here, he gets to put it to good use, and you can tell that they're having fun. This is a live recording, so there is much laughing from the audience, and I wouldn't have it any other way. Hamelin keeps suprising me with his CD's and repertoire choices, and this is no exception. Let's have some more, please!!! (maybe Dave Frishberg, more Flanders and Swann?).

4 out of 5 stars Hop on board the Peace Machine.......2007-05-29

You're probably thinking "Oh great - another guy playing a worn Stratocaster thinking he is Stevie Ray Vaughn". Wrong. What drew me to this CD was that the songs were fresh and fun and had no trace of the cliches that can make this music boring - and the playing and musicianship is outstanding.

4 out of 5 stars Awesome guitarist, but................2006-08-07

SAYCE may be one of the greatest new players waiting to be discovered. His playing is stupendous and rivals the very best ( BONAMASSA / GALES etc. ) of the young guns. JOE ROMAGNOLA from GROOVEYARD ( the producer of this cd ) stated that the guitar parts were recorded LIVE in the studio. Almost unbelievable considering the complexity of his playing and the tightness of the arrangements. However....., the songs are nothing more than vehicles for the guitar virtuosity and are juvenile at best. Lyrics......., best not go there either. After saying all that, it is still a must have for any guitar fan that likes to collect the greatest of the new players. This guy should figure largely in the future of guitar musik

2 out of 5 stars Poorly edited CD; dishonest?.......2001-08-26

Very poorly-edited CD; I can't believe that it was "Released by arrangement with the Gerorge Gershwin Estate", as the booklet states. Consider the following: Upon playing the CD for the first time, I noticed that Track 4, "Grievin' For You" was actually was the same as track 11, "Make Believe". Naturally, I was quite surprised that this error wasn't caught pre-release. I was also disappointed, since I was looking forward to hearing "Grievin' for you". Also, in the booklet it states that track 14, "An American in Paris", was recorded in 1928. I was hoping to hear a historical recording when in fact the track contains a stereo recording of the piece, and is thus in all likelihood a post-1957 recording. I wrote to the publisher of the CD, TKOMagnum, but have not received a response. Let the buyer beware!

THIS CD PUTS A SMILE ON MY FACE EVERYTIME I HEAR IT! JUDY KAYE IS A MOST UNDERUTILIZED TALENT ON THE BROADWAY SCENE, AND THIS CD PROVES IT. CLICK THIS RECORDING INTO YOUR CART THIS INSTANT!

    5 out of 5 stars Pure Energy.......2000-09-17

What an incredible recording! What energy, what a fantastic voice! The songs, many of which are rarely recorded, are presented in a wonderful upbeat and stylish mood. It's almost impossible not to love this CD. Her tributes to the greats of the silver screen are very witty and yet not overly campy. Judy manages to almost one up Carmen Miranda, with her Carmen Tribute. I must say I never really liked the song "Thanks alot, but no thanks" until I heard Judy's version. This CD will leave you exhausted but with lots of happy memories. It will also leave you wishing that Judy Kaye recorded more often!!

5 out of 5 stars If Segovia Played Jazz.......2006-04-15

I like to think that if Segovia played jazz, he would have sounded a lot like this album. The virtuosity, tone and playful mastery of Pass's playing is as unsurpassed among jazz guitarists as Segovia's was in the classical realm.

This is Joe Pass solo, and it is simply jaw dropping. If you are an avid jazz listener, you will be amazed and delighted. If like me, you try to play jazz guitar yourself, you will be stupified.

Yes, the brilliant, flawless technique is here, but it isn't showy or forced. The tracks were recorded in 1988, late in Pass's career, and his restraint, taste and maturity reflect it.

The tune selection is a delight. Who could argue with any of them? And Joe's chord voicings, harmonic choices and rhythmic scamperings bring out the playful best in each. They are all played in the chord/melody style that I think no one does better than Joe Pass.

Fun for everyone and an eat-your-heart-out must for all guitar players.

5 out of 5 stars A tremendous tribute and an amazing album.......2003-09-05

I had heard many a Joe Pass LP, and liked most of them - especially one very quirky one - "Porgy and Bess" - where he played a non-electric along with Oscar Peterson playing a clavinet. I seemed to like that mellower style of Pass more than, say, Pass and Ellis' "Two For The Road" kind of frenetic guitar stuff. I was lucky to see Joe, Live, at the very end of his career, and he played "Cheek To Cheek", mentioning the LP he had recorded as a tribute to both Fred Astaire and to American music. I went out and bought the LP forthwith, and was amazed at both the cohesiveness and the gentleness of all of the playing. It is, in my opinion, the best Pass recording made.

5 out of 5 stars Fred Astaire is in awe of this elegant, understated tribute.......2002-03-02

Joe Pass had done solo guitar discs before this one, most noteably the series of Virtuoso discs. In fact, some of the titles on "Blues for Fred" had been recorded by him as solo pieces before the late 80's session that yielded this disc. Susequent to Fred Astaire's death, Joe got the idea of paying tribute by way of a solo set of most of the best known songs from many of Fred's classic films and plays, often the ones written by Cole Porter.

Joe's earliest solo work often contained frenetic pacing and relied almost too heavily on numerous flights of fancy and note-crammed tangents shoved randomly into the song structures, particularly on the first of the "Virtuoso" discs.
On "Blues for Fred", and older, wiser and much more calm Joe Pass is evident. He had aged well to this point in his career; his choices in this set of standards reflects time and again the wisdom of letting fewer notes tell the story, of allowing the melody to shine through without heavy embellishment, of pacing the entire set at more of a trot than a sprint.

There is no question that Joe's virtuosity and mastery of his instrument is still evident. This is not as abrasive sounding as the first Virtuoso disc, but Joe still manages to display jaw-dropping inventiveness and prowess in how he negotiates keeping up with the simultaneous rhythm and lead guitar chores throughout. There is an overall mellow vibe to this set that makes it quite appropriate for accompanyment to a fine meal or time by the fire late at night, but this is not exactly easy listening music, either.

Anyone with a deep appreciation of fine songcraft performed and interpreted with excellence in a solo guitar setting is strongly encouraged to add this essential disc to their collection. You'd have to be a stone-hearted, tin-eared geek not to recognize the fine artistry and amazing depth of the performances on this disc. The world is a poorer place with both Fred's and Joe's departure from it. Someone needs to do a "Blues for Joe" disc to pay tribute the rich legacy of this underappreciated guitar master.

5 out of 5 stars Pass at his Very Finest.......2000-07-30

If you could own just one Joe Pass album, this would be the one. It's all solo guitar, with Joe working through classics such as Night and Day, Cheek to Cheek and The Way You look Tonight. There is an astonishing level of melodic and harmonic inventiveness here, and the music swings, too.
