Editorial Reviews

From the Artist
One of the fundamental attributes of the art form of jazz is that the future and the past is encompassed in the same vision. We look to the great players of the past for inspiration, and to the music that they played for our foundation. This CD is our homage to these great jazz standards. Each generation of players brings there own musical and cultural sensibilities to the bandstand. WE hope to convey the continuing vitality of the music as it is tempered by our experiences.

In this CD we've tried to capture the feeling of our live performance. Most of the recording was done in one take, with a minimum of studio enhancements. Our goal was to create intimate portraits of the music we love, and believe this to be the essence of jazz.

The duo offers a format for the musician that is unique in music. It gives the player a level of freedom that is not possible in larger groups and provides the backing that is missing in solo performance. It opens the music up and provides room for interaction and a dialog that at times can be astonishing to both the player and the listener.

Product Description
A jazz guitar duet in the tradition of the masters, yet updated by modern sensibilities and influences. Styles include bebop and latin.

"Howard and Doug's treatment of these wonderful jazz standards is there own, but the significant influence of performers who've preceeded them is nicely evident throughout. ... It's difficult to sustain musical interest over an entire CD with just two guitars, but these two men acquit themselves admirably... " Dale Bruning, guitarist, composer, educator.

Amazon.com

This bargain-priced four-CD set presents itself as easy, event-based listening, with the CDs individually titled "Wining," "Dining," "Dancing," and "Romancing." A glimpse at the track list and personnel, however, immediately reveals that, much more than "easy listening," it's an extraordinary collection of jazz performances culled from the Verve archives and including material from the label's classic and recent periods, as well as from subsidiary labels.

The selection has been made with remarkable thoughtfulness, pulling out tracks that may surprise even veteran listeners. John Coltrane plays "You're a Weaver of Dreams" with the Miles Davis rhythm section in a 1959 session. There's also Miles's 1958 rendition of "Round Midnight" with arranger Michel LeGrand. And there's a live Paris recording of "Whisper Not" by Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers with Lee Morgan. When Al Hibbler sings "This Love of Mine," he's backed by the perfectly Ellingtonian horns of Johnny Hodges and Ben Webster.

"Dancing" picks up the tempo and swings with vigor, but the other volumes are almost textbooks on the art of ballad playing, with many of the greatest saxophonists, trumpeters, and vocalists represented, and a healthy sampling of pianists and guitarists as well. Sure, it functions as mood music, but there's none of the usual artificiality or manipulative effects. It's jazz, often of the highest order and filled with a spirit of timeless romance. --Stuart Broomer

5 out of 5 stars The Best!!!!.......2005-08-14

I'm a die-hard Ella Fitzgerald fan, and when I heard her along with Louis Armstrong and such other greats as Sarah Vaughan, Duke Ellington, George Shearing, Chet Baker, Dizzy, and others, I absolutely had to buy it. Have given it as gifts on many occasions, and everyone loves it....even the youngsters ( between 25 and 40)!. Great buy, and great gift for any occasion.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Why Granz deserves his own jazz club in Heaven.......2003-03-06

For his tireless, effective, and classy promotion of first-rate musicians, Norma Granz must surely be one of the great cultural influences of our century, even if no one but jazz types know of him. More admirable (because courageous and selfless)is that he absolutely forbade racial segregation in his audiences and for his musicians. Granz was famous for making sure that ALL his musicians received first-class treatment, without distinction.

And what first-class music his people made! From the "Jazz at the Philharmonic" series to his long tenure with Verve (which he founded), Granz brought together the very, very best jazz musicians, under the best conditions, and let them play what moved them.

This collection is a fine, fine introduction to what Granz accomplished--and extraordinarily fun to hear.

If you're looking for a great intro to jazz, you could do worse than to start here. (For pedagogical purposes, Ken Burns' five-CD set, "The Story of America's Music," is more comprehensive, and it has much to commend it. Listening to that set, though, requires an interest in being educated, as much as an interest in listening to jazz--some of the discs are jarringly uneven in tone, mood, style, and sound quality.)

4 out of 5 stars 50 years of Jazz Bliss.......2001-01-23

What is jazz? Dixieland? Big-band? Kenny G? (Perish the thought!
Forgive me for such heresy!)

I write this review about halfway
through the stunning Ken Burns "Jazz" chronicle on PBS
(January 2001) - I felt compelled to get this set out for my
late-night listening, and am glad I did!

This 4-CD set contains
almost 5 hours of great jazz performances by the giants - Louis
Armstrong, Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Stan Getz,
Ella Fitzgerald, Oscar Peterson... well, you can read the
list.

Sound quality is awesome, especially considering that some of
these recordings are over 50 years old. Verve obviously wanted this
to be a quality product, to commemmorate their golden anniversary.
And the performances - if you have NOT heard them before, you will be
alternately slack-jawed with amazement and grinnin' like a possum
eatin' a sweet potato!

Jazz aficionados will probably already have
most of this material - none of it is new or unissued, all of it is
classic jazz. If you're like me - you've had some exposure to jazz
and want to add some good stuff to your collection - you can't go
wrong with this set. If you get picked to be on Survivor Island, you
just might want to take it with you... I would!

5 out of 5 stars SPECTACULAR!.......1999-11-04

the best compilation of jazz music ever! this is a must for all music lover and you'll know after you've listened

5 out of 5 stars THIS IS A MUST FOR YOUR COLLECTION.......1999-06-07

I scored this at a used "rock&roll shop for 20 bucks. Little did they no the value. This is totally awesome. The best part is the "assortedness" of it. I was leary of sound quality, but it is very good. The version of Dizzy's "Manteca" is almost worth the price. The only person missing is Kenton, but as we know, he wasn't a verve man. BUy it, its worth it.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful introduction to Jazz for the unititiated.......1998-12-31

I spotted this album in a friend's jazz collection. It has become a favorite of mine. Its perfect to give as a gift. Great listening, and a wonderful intro to Jazz.

4 out of 5 stars "What A Diff'rence A Day Made . . . And The Diff'rence Is You".......2007-03-31

If you want to listen to a huge variety of jazz icons all together in one CD, then you're in for a delight with this outstanding compilation CD. Most of the famous jazz giants are represented here - from the majestic royalties Count Basie and Duke Ellington to the original divas Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Dinah Washington, Nina Simone and Billie Holiday, and not to mention Louis Armstrong, Oscar Peterson, Bill Evans, Stan Getz, Chick Corea, Erroll Garner, Dizzy Gillespie and Wes Montgomery.

Louis Armstrong opens up with Cole Porter's "Just One of Those Things" and invites you for a "trip to the moon on gossamer wings." Sarah Vaughan presents her tantalizing vocals in "Lullaby of Birdland" and shows off her versatility in scat singing. Stan Getz performs a Bossa Nova staple "The Girl From Ipanema" with vocals from the husband-and-wife team of João and Astrud Gilberto.

Bill Evans contributes his delicate touch on the ivories as he plays "Here's That Rainy Day." Every tune that Mr. Evans plays becomes a beautiful masterpiece. Erroll Garner plays his signature composition "Misty" with an enchanting arrangement making it one of the best tracks. Count Basie wraps up this presentation with a beautiful tune that takes you back to the fifties, "April In Paris," a composition by Vernon Duke and Yip Harburg.

The First Lady of Song Ella Fitzgerald does a swinging Rodgers & Hart song, "Everything I've Got" while Dinah Washington sings another beautiful version of Maria Grover and Stanley Adams' "What A Diff'rence A Day Made" (the other fabulous version is found in Diana Ross' charming album, Blue).

"What a diff'rence a day made
Twenty-four little hours
Brought the sun and the flowers
Where there used to be rain

My yesterday was blue, dear
Today, I'm a part of you, dear
My lonely nights are thru, dear
Since you said you were mine

What a diff'rence a day makes
There's a rainbow before me
Skies above can't be stormy
Since that moment of bliss

That thrilling kiss
It's heaven when you find romance on your menu
What a diff'rence a day made
And the diff'rence is . . . you."

With this CD, there is something wonderful to unfold if you're a fan of any of these jazz greats. If you're a fan of all of them, then so much the better. It's very rare to find an incredible collection such as this. It's a rare find . . . so check this out and enjoy!

Wholeheartedly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD!!.......2002-07-16

Actually I would have content buying this CD if only one of the songs were on it - Wes Montgomery ... mmm, good!

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful collection.......2000-12-12

This is the perfect cd, not only for people wanting to get into jazz but for jazz lovers in general, who like a bit of variety. Here you have vocal as well as instrumental songs. There are a lot (16) of the BIG names, Louis, Oscar, Dizzy, Sarah, Duke, Chick, Ella, Wes, Nina, Charlie, Bill, Dinah, Stan, Erroll, Billie and Count; none of whom need to have their surnames added. Every song on this disc rates 10 stars. How could it not? Highly recommended.

3 out of 5 stars Georgia on My Mind.......2000-07-20

When I was married and living in Georgia, my wife bought this CD, and when she became my ex-wife, I moved to Ohio and left it with her. I miss it, and now I'm buying it, because it's got some really neat stuff on here -- without buying every single CD in the set (for example, my ex thought the Chick Corea cut, "Captain Marvel" was really cool, then bought more of his stuff and didn't like it (no accounting for taste)). As a music teacher, this is a handy CD to have around because it has a bunch of different styles on one disc; from Satchmo to Fusion and back. Enjoy.

4 out of 5 stars For beginners.......2007-06-18

Jazz compilation without the best (Django Reinhardt) and the most influential (Charlie Christian)?

Naturally, Verve is doing the best it can with its rich vaults, and the number of great guitar players is really impressive (Hall, Burrell, Montgomery, Pass, Kessell, McLaughlin...); some of them are probably represented with their choisiest work...

So, all in all, this is very good for jazz beginners who'd have a hard time comprehending Django's music anyway...

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars a remarkable collection at a great price.......2001-03-04

Like the companion set, Hittin' on All Six (jazz guitar), this collection brings together a wide range of excellent records that date from the earliest jazz recordings going up though early modern. Some of the selections are predictable, some are obscure, but they all are interesting. Lots of Sid Catlett, for example, and excellent choices on the big band side in particular (Cozy Cole, Jimmy Crawford and Jo Jones, to name three). No Lionel Hampton, but the fabulous cymbal beat of Alvin Burroughs with a Hampton small group. And of course, Chick Webb's Liza, which features wonderful drumming but also a really fine trumpet solo by Bobby Stark (the 2nd solo).

5 out of 5 stars Relaxing, loungy music for the background or the foreground.......2006-06-21

I'm not someone who usually listens to bossa nova, but I do love jazz. And this is one of the best CD's in my collection. When I first started listening to this CD, I was concerned that the Bossa Nova beat would get too repetitous, but that has not been a problem. Ike Quebec's soulful style and tone are clear and beautiful here, and Kenny Burrell matches up nicely with Quebec, much in the same way that Grant Green does on Blue and Sentimental. I put this CD on when I'm working and it gently guides me along. I put this CD on while laying out by a pool the other day, and it changed the whole atmosphere.

The only bad thing about this CD is that Blue Note doesn't make it more available at a lower cost. Please, Blue Note, make Ike Quebec more easily available. The world needs to hear his music.

5 out of 5 stars one of the smoothest lp's out there.......2006-05-14

very incredible album all the way thru. the music literally oozes smooth class and stylish tranquility. from the opening track to the finale, this LP effortlessly transports me to a lush, outdoor patio-bar somwhere near a tropical ocean. ultra-smooth saxaphone and guitar dressed in dapper elegance... underpinned by a light bossa nova shuffle and a walking blue bass... people should definitely own this one.

5 out of 5 stars An obscure gem of an underrated genius..........2001-04-28

An excellent interpretation of the Bossa Nova style,Ike Quebeck infuses it with with a tinge of the blues melancholy and his signature light, ethereal tone that lifts you off the ground from the opening track, and your "floating on clouds"till the last track ends and you have to come back down.Ike Quebeck had the magic gift of the "light touch" to his technique which had a distinctly atmospheric, sensuous sound in the way he played.Check out his genius you wont be disappointed!

5 out of 5 stars Bewitching Sax Tone on a Wonderful Album.......2001-04-07

This album is full of music that deserves to be called special. Ike Quebec's tenor sax playing is so rich and lulling that it is possible to get lost in the sheer beauty of his tone, almost (but not quite) losing track of the song that is the reason for the tone - or perhaps the tone is the reason for playing the song. Either way, the accompaniment on this disc, featuring Kenny Burrell, Willie Bobo, Wendell Marshall, and Gavin Masseaux, is both lush and understated. The music may not be, strictly speaking, bossa nova, but it is truly beautiful and deserves greater recognition than it has recieved (the same may be said of Quebec's music as a whole - every Quebec release features moments of joyous saxophone magic). The only regrets that I have concerning this album is that it is not longer (12 tracks, of which the final 3 are alternate takes), and that Ike Quebec was not to make more of this sweet sound - just over three months after this album was recorded, on January 16th, 1963, Ike Quebec succumbed to lung cancer, at the age of 44. His soulful takes on both original tunes and standards reveal him to be a true stylist, a master of effusive understatement, a musician who is able to take any theme, from "See See Rider" to Dvorak, and make it his own. If there were a true heavenly palace of sound, I have no doubt where palace would be found: inside of Ike Quebec's horn.

5 out of 5 stars My favourite Bossa Nova CD.......1999-10-30

I have the original Lp, Japanese re-issue LP, and the CD... Does that tell how good the CD is...:)

This should NOT be a discontinued album. From Ella Fitzgerald faking her way through "Mack The Knife," right up to Chuck Mangione with a symphony orchestra, COMPACT JAZZ * THE SAMPLER is an absolute delight. These superlative VERVE records span the years 1955 to 1979.

    ALBUM HIGHLIGHTS:
Jimmy Smith's swinging "Walk On The Wild Side," which opens with sleigh bells.
Erroll Garner grunting his way through his most famous composition, "Misty," from 1954.
Antonio Carlos Jobim plays piano on his renowned "The Girl From Ipanema." This Stan Getz/Astrud Gilberto version got mega-airplay in America in 1963, and started the Bossa Nova craze here.
The equally well-known Count Basie 1955 recording of "April In Paris" still soars high. ("...One more once!")
Dinah Washington's classic take of "What A Difference A Day Makes," from 1959.
(The Divine) Sarah Vaughan bills and coos on "Lullabye Of Birdland," recorded December, '54.

All of these, save the Smith track, were huge hits. Additionally, this sampler offers an early work by Chick Corea, Lady Day (Billie Holliday) in hi-fi, and Oscar Peterson and Gerry Mulligan, both in top form. A highly recommended collection.

    TOTAL RUNNING TIME -- 63:14

4 out of 5 stars Great varied mix of jazz.......2005-12-21

This old and now deleted album showcases tracks from many titles of the compact jazz label's range. I first heard this cd from my local library 15 years ago. I heard some of it played on a local radio recently and tried to track it down. Amazon is the only place I could find it, new and used.

This album's strength lies in it's wide range of jazz tracks, ranging from a live version of "Mack the knife" performed by Ella Fitzgerald in Berlin, to the acapella-esque swingle singers' "Vendome" and from the original version of (the much abused) "Girl from Ipanema" to the Bill Evan's interpretretation of "I've Got You Under My Skin" (which still sounds fresh and inspiring to my ears many years on). For me, however, the stand out tracks are far and away Chick Corea's exciting "Captain Marvel" and the marvellously up tempo Reinhardt homage "Djangology" by Stephan Grapelli.

The only criticism of this album is perhaps a reliance on many vocal led tracks; 6 out of 16 is probably too many, and 5 of the 6 (if you include "Girl From Ipanema") are solo female voices leading. However, many of these voices are owned by instantly recognised names, so it serves as no surprise as to why they were chosen on this sampler disk.

This disk was part of my introduction to music many years ago and I still enjoy listening to it now that I've tracked it down.

What we have here is a masterpiece of mood. That silky, late night mood that gives birth to all kinds of romantic thoughts--some wistful, some satisfying, some unbearably sad, lonely or even hopeful. Verve has done an incredible job of selecting a wide range of performers, songs, and time periods and succeed in making this an indispensible jazz collection. Dinah Washington's acapella notes at the beginning of the "i'll Close My Eyes" is a perfect curtain-raiser; Stephane Grapelli's short, melancholy "Souvenir de Villagen" is a perfect closing theme. Some true standouts in a collection of them: Oscar Peterson giving one of the most tender piano solos in his career on "I Loves You, Porgy," and a haunting, smokey "My Funny Valentine" from sax great Ben Webster. In the vocal deparment, Billie Holiday turns in a surprisingly upbeat "Darn That Dream" near the end of her life that actually supplies some hope amid her despair; and Joao Gilberto pleading of Brazilian love in "O Grande Amor." The Joe Williams "Embraceable You" is from 1989, and shows the blues great at a different level, more intimate and vulnerable, although he's still creatively jazzy. Other greats are the very sad duets "Maybe September" from Jimmy Smith/Wes Montgomery and "Turn out the Stars" from subtle masters Bill Evans and Jim Hall. Mel Torme's vocal group and Count Basie's orchestra work their usual mastery, and perhaps the most sublime recording is the First Lady of Song herself backed up by that greatest of jazz bands, Duke Ellington and his orchestra in "I Didn't Know About You" which is not a mistake you should make in regarding this album, which is most definetly worth knowing about.

5 out of 5 stars Hail Verve for an amazing Compilation.......2003-08-14

Words fail me when I try to describe the emotions present in the songs on this collection. Verve has truly done masterful work in selecting songs with that certain midnight mood, that star-crossed lover, intimate feeling that jazz romance is supposed to be, all dark blue night and purple horizons. There's a vareity of feeling here, but an overall brillance that makes this worth every penny. The only problem would be length, proving that no good album is too short. Some favorites: Oscar Peterson plays "I Loves You, Porgy" with such a delicate tenderness and wistful longing that it'll make you stop whatever you're doing and just be DRAWN IN. Billie Holiday sings "Darn that Dream" near the end of her life, but there's a surprising hopefulness in this interpretation that sets it off from her gloomier side. A 1989 Joe Williams "Embraceable You" shows a different Joe than the one who scatted with Basie in the 1950s-- this Joe is more emotional and sensitive in his later years, but still not afraid to twist the melody and words in a fun, seductive way. Speaking of seductive, Ben Webster plays the Chet Baker staple "My Funny Valentine" through a smokey mist that enables the listener to hear shades of the tune never contemplated before. The underrated Prysock emotes true heartbreak with the string-backed vocal "Teardrops in the Rain." Ella and Duke work magnificently, as always: "Didn't Know about You" is probably the most romatic cut here, except maybe for Joao Gilberto's gravity-defying stroll through "O Grande Amor." The Evans/Hall and Montgomery/Smith collaborations are atmospheric and contemplative, reminiscent of autumns and lost love...Dinah Washington is one hell of a curtain-opener with "I'll Close My Eyes," alternately hopeful, bluesy, and desperate in it's longing, and it doesn't get much better than that.

5 out of 5 stars Some Extraordinary Stuff from Verve Vaults.......2003-08-10

The people at Verve Records really know how to set a mood when they make a jazz compliation album, as both the "Night Out" box set and the whole "Jazz 'Round Midnight" series prove. This is an alsum for the budget-minded jazz fan who doesn't have the cash for each selection, but Verve makes it worth every penny. There's every style of midnight music here, from wistfulness (Count Basie's "Softly With Feeling") to mounrful sadness (Wes Montgomery and Jimmy Smith's "Maybe September") and of course, romantic happiness (Ella Fitzgerald and Duke's duet on "Didn't Know About You"). There are some great standout tracks here, especially Oscar Peterson playing "I Loves You, Porgy" and making it incredibly cool and beautiful, and Ben Webster sounding mysteriously smoky and sad on "My Funny Valentine." Verve can also be commended for a diverse line-up: where else can you find Sarah Vaughn, Billie Holliday(a surprisingly upbeat "Darn that Dream')Stephane Grapelli, Joa Gilberto, Bill Evans, and Arthur Prysock in the same place? However, this means no Chet Baker or Charlie Parker, and their lack of inclusion os notable. But in the end it doesn't really matter, this is a 16-song album of great material from start to finish, and as the first song openes with Dinah Washingtoon's acapella voice rising on "I'll Close My Eyes," you'll know you made the right purchase.
