Elliott Yamin's debut is so agreeable and well-executed it may well convert hardened R&B experts--the kind who'd normally distance themselves from a disc with a TV pedigree. With sincerity and a voice that vaults itself to places no talent-show contestant should be able to go, Yamin bares his soul here in a way that would do his hero, Donny Hathaway, proud. Tracks like "Take My Breath Away" and "You Are the One" find him twisting a wrench around love-stained lyrics; "I'm the Man" and "Find A Way" flow with hat-in-hand grace (and, in the case of the latter, a scat worthy of a vintage jazz stage); and opener "Movin' On" immortalizes the season five judges'-table words of Paula Abdul: Ellliott Yamin is "one funky white boy." As he proves with this five-star album, he is also among the most gifted artists ever to a turn a stint on the show into a recording career. --Tammy La GorceCustomer Reviews:
An exceptional debut that grows on you.......2007-07-20
Indeed when I first bought the album and upon the initial listens, I couldn't help but be disappointed that such a great talent had put out a CD that in my opinion was very forgettable, granted I did like a few songs at first, such as the first single "Wait For You" and "Movin On". Thankfully I refused to give up on the album, and after making myself listen to the tracks multiple times I soon realized my initial impressions of the album were pretty off. No this is not a 5 star album or a classic in my opinion (but then again how many debut albums are?), but I now regard it as a very solid r&b/pop album. The tracks on this album really do grow on you, so I just want to stress to fans of Yamin that if they're not crazy about the album at first give it a chance before making your final judgments.
The album is definitely very R&Bish / soulful (who says white men can't have soul right?), but there are also pop influences present on the album. Almost every song is well written, especially such ones as "Find a Way", a modern R&B track about the unfairness of the world, and how love has to find a way in order to cope with it all. "Free" is another lyrical highlight about how we have the freedom to be able to make our dreams realities if we put our mind to it, although it's not one of my favorite songs melody-wise.
Some of my favorite melodies on the album are the mid tempo first single "Wait For You" which mixes R&B and pop, and the soft and soothing "You Are The One", a straight up love ballad. "Train Wreck" is a pure R&B song, and a favorite of mine, where Yamin's voice is in top form as he sings about a relationship thats heading for a "train wreck", and I love the hook of the song. On the other end, I love the upbeat rhythms of "Movin On", which boasts a hand clapping beat that accompanies lyrics about getting tired of waiting for his significant other to decide what she wants, and "movin on" with his life. "Alright" is another upbeat track, that wouldn't feel out of place in a club, the song definitely has a hip/hop vibe to it and to me sounds similar to something Usher would record. It's a great change of pace and another favorite of mine.
Thats another good thing about the album, there really is a variety of appeal on here, "Wait For You" and "You Are the One" for example would be perfect for ac radio or even pop, whereas I could see songs like "Movin On" and "Alright" fitting in on current R&B/Hip Hop stations, the album really has a range of appeal from old to young, Adult Contemporary to R&B. Even commercially the album has potential, "Wait For You" has so far become a top 20 hit on the Billbaord Hot 100, and I don't think its the only song on here capable of making it into that tier of the charts.
But perhaps the best thing about this album, is Yamin's voice itself. Even when I wasn't too into the songs yet, I still loved listening to Yamin's strong soulful voice, which shines on pretty much every track here, and fans of Yamin should enjoy the "A Song For You" cover, which is definitely a showcase for Yamins vocals. Even the tracks I don't really care for such as "I'm the Man" and "Take My Breath Away" are made much better by the voice thats singing them.
So overall I'm pleased with Elliott's debut, it took some time, but the album is one that I'll be listening to for awhile. If Yamin can improve upon his debut and grow more as an artist, he should have a long, bright career ahead. 4/5 stars

Nobody knows heartache like Mary J. knows heartache. But as she releases her seventh disc, perhaps more important is that nobody understands better how unquenchable our thirst to hear what it sounds like can be. The Breakthrough, contrary to run-up rumors, is no retrospective or greatest-hits package. Rather than reheat, Blige and producers Dr. Dre, Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis, and Will.i.am tasked themselves with stirring a river of hurt into some of the highest-caliber hip-hop/soul to hit the airwaves since she burned up the Waiting to Exhale soundtrack with "Not Gon' Cry." Cameos alone could sell this disc: Brook, Jay-Z, Raphael Saadiq, and Bono step up. But it's the trademark ragged-edged soul of its star that shines brightest throughout the 16 tracks. "A love that tears you down ain't really love," a laid-bare Blige reminds us on "Ain't Really Love," after dedicating "Good Woman Down" to "my troubled sisters." Somewhere in between, she leaves absolutely no room for doubt that she just can't be without her baby ("Be Without You"). It's an exhilarating, love-affirming moment on a CD jammed full of them (check out "Can't Get Enough," with its echoes of a pleading Curtis Mayfield). Blige, never far from the thoughts of the lovelorn, didn't need a breakthrough, but anybody with an ear for artful confession will be glad she's given us The Breakthrough anyway. --Tammy La GorceCustomer Reviews:

Finding her stride on this energetic and brilliantly crafted album, Tiffany's unique and mesmerizing voice is reminiscent of Aretha and Anastacia at their soulful best, and will leave you breathless.Customer Reviews:
Appropriate Album Title for a Terrific Album.......2007-04-16
"Dust off and Dance", is quite likely to be a reference to Tiffany herself dusting off the past (be it harsh reviewes, haters, or the mood of "The Color of Silence"), and quite literally just dancing. At least "Dust off and Dance" doesn't try to be anything more than a dance / disco / Hi NRG album - and a fantastic one at that. Production blends the best of modern day sounds with a bit of the 80's, combined with Tiffany's powerful voice and some great lyrics, most of which are written by her, resulting in an album that is easy to listen to over and over again.
The songs may not seem as deep on the surface as those from her previous album, but they all tell a story and do have important meanings to them, like enjoying life as it is so short. Some of the songs and lyrics are a bit suggestive, but the album was written, according to Tiffany, with her gay fans in mind. It's also appropriate for the dance floor (obviously). While the overall mood of the album is upbeat, there are a couple of ballads, but even they are upbeat. It's great to see that the album has been getting some play on the hit TV series "Ugly Betty". The biggest problem with the album though is that it is too short - only eleven songs, two of which are remixes. But hey, quality over quantity anyday.

Good Job, Colorado Mass Choir.......2007-05-02
Top notch.......2007-03-11
Stands up to repeated listenings -- what a flow.......2006-12-02
As usual with Minister Pace's projects, we have consistently good arrangements, simple lyrics and good soloists who never get carried away. Of note is the brotha who leads the title track, who sounds a LOT like J. Moss. An effective church medley of old-school gospel hits is included and presented in a way that will be satisfying even to younger folks who may not recall the originals. And the overall selection of songs provides the mix of styles this crew is known for.
Again ... there is nothing earth-shattering here, but if you like spiritual music at all you're sure to really like or love PRAISE 'TIL YOU BREAK THROUGH. And fans of Joe Pace and Colorado Mass Choir will love and appreciate it right away, because it is typical in every way of one of their albums. Recommended.

La Palabra really is THE WORD in salsa!.......2004-11-12
La Palabra sigue en talla!.......2004-07-25
La Palabra had an enormous impact on salsa in New York when he came out with the song Lady. It was the first song, I recall, to combine romanticism with salsa and have English lyrics. I loved it just like everyone else. In fact, that song was played numerous times in the clubs each night - just like I'm Going to Shenzhen is when I travel around the world - which I do periodically for my business. (And by the way, Europeans love the slow tempo of Tun Tun de Tu Corazon.) I am a very avid fan of La Palabra because he goes outside of the salsa box and maintains his quality.
I remember listening to Orquesta Aragon when they did a combo song called El Charleston which combined cha cha cha with the Charleston. I also remember our great, Beny More when he combined the big band American sound with Latin music. Both artists brought a new flavor to our music.
For the lady in Hollywood, Florida, perhaps you need to go do some research about our music before you go writing negative reviews about our artists who are keeping our music alive and making the whole world dance.
Only a couple of good songs.......2004-07-18
Although he is a good pianist, I was surprised to learn that La Palabra is from Cuba. Technically he has what it takes to be a Cuban musician, but he has lost the Cuban style. I was also shocked when I read somewhere that the other singer on breakthrough, Gonzalo Chomat is also a Cuban exhile. I left Cuba less than ten years ago and I have never heard of Chomat. The band is based in California so I would have guessed he is from Mexico. Chomat has also lost the Cuban style. He doesn't sing like a Cuban at all. California is not Cuba or Miami, so it appears Orq. La Palabra is trying to soften up or lose the hard Caribbean edge and sell themselves to California Latinos -- very different style from east coast Latinos.
I guess with such boring songs that we hear in elevators and in doctor's offices, like "Feelings" and "Lady" this band is trying to sell themselves not only to California Latinos, but also to American English speaking audiences, however there is only one Miami sound machine. Before they go any further with this, they should enroll the second lead singer, Chomat in some English classes first, he is hardly understandable on either American song. "I'm going to Shen Zen" is a complete waste of time and will make anyone think that Orq. La Palabra should please leave hip hop to those who can do it right -- like Snoop Dog and M&M.
The album is not a total loss however, two very good dance songs are El Temblor and Ahe Ahe. On these songs the band plays the harder energetic salsa the Caribbean is known for, and they show that they are good musicians, they just need to stop pimping themselves so hard and recapture their Cuban roots.
If you buy this CD don't forget to burn the two good songs on it for your salsa dancing pleasure before you give it away to a coworker at the office Christmas party.

Breakdown.......2006-11-17
The second tune is a neglible period piece with Walton moving to Fender Rhodes for this and the succeeding number (at least the latter doesn't employ a fade-out). Then to capture any jazz-listener "pretenders," the program moves to Cedar's take on "Love Story" sans saxophones, followed by a tune as elemental as the blues, Gershwin's "Summertime" (no surprises, other than Hank's hard-edged, suddenly annoying sound and stuck-in-a-rut constructions punctuated by his (desperate) shouts of self-encouragement between phrases).
About this time, I saw Hank behave the same on stage at the Brown Shoe in Chicago, where he had to be escorted off the stage before the end of the first tune. At least he appears to have been fairly straight for this recording session, sufficiently so to go the distance. The set closes (mercifully) with an innocuous swinger based on a couple of modal scales. The presence of Charles Davis does little for ensemble cohesion or the intonation of either saxophonist.
Recommended for Mobley completists not averse to hearing a genius of American music continue his self-destructive ways (aided and abetted by the pressures of the market-place, with its ridiculous, deplorably ignorant musical tastes). In fact, this is essentially Hank's "last gasp" on record. The rhythm section is first-rate, not out to make a "statement," with Walton perfect (albeit predictable) as always and Higgins maintaining his claim as house drummer for Blue Note, Muse or anyone fortunate to secure his services. Audio quality is non-problematic.
Very few listeners--even jazz aficionados--are aware that the real progressive action in music at this time was not with modal, free, funky, or fusion music but with the neglected Art Blakey 1970's ensembles, performing Walter Davis Jr. compositions that towered above the rest of the trendy sonic mayhem.
If you're new to Mobley, don't even consider this one. Start with anything featuring Blakey, Silver, or Miles as leader--or his own Blue Note sessions, 1956-1963, when his was (still is) the most welcome, inexhaustible sound in music.
Thoroughly entertaining.......2000-09-29
Mobley managed to find a thoroughly original voice in the '50s and '60s, despite being a contemporary of tenor giants Coltrane, Rollins and Gordon. His was a mellower, funkier sound, and the ease with which he played belied the complexity of his ideas. Walton's piano sound featured shimmering runs, fleeting quotes and a good dose of humor that is in evidence on this disc. They are joined by underrated baritone man Charles Davis, who also takes some nice turns at the other end of the aural spectrum on soprano, most notably on "The House on Maple Street."
"Breakthrough" jumps from the word go with the steaming title cut, mellows through a Latin-flavored "Sabia" and Walton even manages to wring some lyrical life from the now-dated "Theme from Love Story." The windups, a cooking version of "Summertime" and a superb blues, "Early Morning Stroll," bring the session to an invigorating close with some of Mobley's best playing.
Don't miss throughout the fine drumming of the ubiquitous Billy Higgins, who fires up the title tune and displays superb taste and adds value to every tune with his shifting rhythms. He's a drummer who listens.
"Breakthrough" shows that the '70s wasn't all about fusion. Mobley and Walton keep the spirit of jazz alive with this fine effort and make sure to let you know musician and listener alike should have a little fun along the way.
