A Wonderful Collection.......2007-04-11

As a selection, this is highly representative of Mozart's music. Just seeing the volume of work makes one marvel at Mozart's genius. Hear everything from piano to woodwinds, symphonies to concertos as well as religious pieces and operas. On my cd player, which is not a very expensive model, I get fine tonal quality and dynamics. I would highly recommend this box set to any fan of Mozart's work.

Celebrate Mozart's 250th at a Budget Price.......2006-01-11

This month will mark the 250th anniversary of the birth of one of the giants of the classical music world. While I am certainly not a classical music snob (the only Mozart piece I can identify is "Eine Kleine Nachtmusik," and what little I know of his life came from the 1984 movie "Amadeus"), I recognize his genius and the significance of his music.

This 20-CD box set gathers all of his major symphonies, concertos and operas into one massive collection. All of the selections are performed by European musicians (eg. the Budapest Philharmonic Orchestra, the Berliner Kammerorchester, etc.). While not household names, the music is uniformly excellent.

If you're looking for an inexpensive purchase (I got mine at a national retailer that rhymes with "Clam's Tub" for under $20!) to kick off your "Rock Me Amadeus" party, this is a great choice. RECOMMENDED

Radu Lupu and Murray Perahia should have recorded all of Mozart's piano music for four hands, which includes several neglected masterpieces. This disc reflects their ideal partnership, two artists of great sensitivity collaborating in performances that feature constant interplay of parts, alertness to each other's work, and superb playing as individuals. The Concerto for Two Pianos ripples along without a care in the world, just as it should, and the English Chamber Orchestra doesn't seem to care that nobody is conducting it. The pieces without orchestra are a bit less significant (as is the Concerto for Three Pianos), but the playing is so beautiful you won't care. --Leslie Gerber

Fabulous music performed by fabulous musicians. Mozart is one of my favorite composers. His music is genius. And Muray Perahia and Radu Lupu are two of the greatest pianists of our time.

This is a very good recording of these pieces. Lupu and Perahia take Mozart seriously and play with energy and lyrical power. The chamber orchestra fits very well into the picture. This is a safe bet for these wonderful pieces.

Wow...this is a wondeful recording, plain and simple.

If you haven't listened to the Fanatsia in F minor, originally for mechanical organ, then this is the recording to commence doing so with. This is a fantasic rendition of this piece, full of the darkness that must have pervaded Mozart's final years.

The finale of the E-flat Concerto K365 is also a one-of-a-kind showpiece with wonderful dialogue between the 2 pianos.

Highly recommend this recording as the very best available of the pieces it contains.

Sheer piano lust!.......2002-10-16

This is one of my all time favorite piano works. I have several different versions of K365 and this seems the best combination of punch/musicality/flow. Fantasia K608 is a masterpiece on its own and probably a one of a kind interpretation since it was originally written for the organ, then re-writeen (not by Mozart) for 2 pianos, and last edited by Perahia and Lupu for its final form.

Essential Mozart.......2001-04-01

As a reviewer on another piece noted, the modern world seems bent on presenting Mozart as the wunderkind (Tom Hulce playing him like a Martin Short character from SCTV in 'Amadeus' may have had *something* to do with it ). Anyway, this was the disc that opened my mind up to another view of Mozart. I wouldn't call it masculine, but rather, deep, brooding, emotional and above all monstrously convincing: these pieces and the fantastic playing on this disc will make you realize that Mozart was not just a huge influence on Romantic music, but that he deserves more credit than he's gotten for the emergence of the deeply personal, individualistic styles of the 19th C.

The Fm Fantasia was a revelation worthy of the purchase price, if you haven't heard that piece.

I really enjoy this collection. The notes describe how Mozart did not have these instruments available, so this is the CB demo of what it might have been like.

Mozart's more sublime compositions not well represented.......2005-01-29

If you want to quickly sort out the best performances/ recordings for this masterpiece, all one needs to do is compare the deeply moving third movement of the Gran Partita (adagio) for this CD versus Marriner's or Mackerras's recordings. The intrepretation of that movement on this CD seems to totally miss the gentle, soaring sentiment Mozart wanted to produce with his beloved woodwinds. This is the moving composition early in the movie Amadeus which the eldery Salieri so eloquently describes its sublimitity and seeming transcendence. Instead in this recording here, the pace and character seem more like a march than a meditative movement touching upon heavenly inspirations. There is usually a reason for a low priced CD's (but not always like in the case of Naxos) and this one fits that model. The Marriner ASMF recording is listed as a Gramophone "recommended recording" for the Serenade K361 and is one that captures well the sublime emotion as does the performance under Sir Charles Mackerras. These are both much better choices and do the work its justice.

a bland recording, not one of essential classics' essential CDs...most of the movements are also truncated--missing repeats, variations, etc...and if you like your recordings to have a spacey sound, this recording sounds like they were in a little box...save your money

I found the first selection here to be simply gorgeous. Mozart's music can be simply sublime sometimes. To me, the notes in the score are magical in and of themselves. Having said that, I have not experienced the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields recording of this; so I cannot judge this recording against that one. However, I have no regrets over saving a few dollars and being enraptured by the good music-making done on this disc.

Mozart deserves better treatment.......2000-10-19

I was really disappointed by this lousy performance of the Gran Partita. Sure they get all the notes, but there's no feeling of magic. The Academy of St. Martin in the Fields gives this composition a much better treatment. I also plan to check out the famous Mackerras version in the future. As far as the two Divertimentos for winds, they are minor works, but the recordings of them are better quality. The Fantasia is not for winds and, pardon the expression, a wind arrangement takes the "wind" out of it. Try a recording of it on organ or piano or the mechanical organ it was meant for. The same goes for the last piece on this album.

RARE BASSOONISTS!! Sol Schoenbach AND Milan Turkovic!!.......1999-02-11

It's hard to find any Sol Schoenbach recordings anymore. All of the ensembles are great!! I highly recommend this cd to any wind player. Many highly excellent musicians, all on one cd. It is a very relaxing cd, also.
