4 out of 5 stars Film Music of Ralph Vaughan Williams, Vol. 2.......2007-01-06

This CD features the score Vaughan Williams wrote for the 1941 British film 49th Parallel. The music is a series of musical portraits of various parts of the film. The film itself was an effort to bring to the United States the story of how Canada was helping the British war effort. The hope was that the United States would soon become an ally of Great Britain in its war against the Nazi's. While the music for the film has been preserved, there is no current DVD copy of the film for region 1. Turner Classic Movies shows the film from time to time.

5 out of 5 stars Ralph Vaughan Williams and his Film Music.......2006-10-31

Ralph Vaughan Williams' film scores are outstanding. What images he created when you listen to CD. I found this CD in a used bin. I was really surprised. I no longer have to wait to hear them on public radio!

4 out of 5 stars A curiosity with the familiar Garland touch.......2005-02-15

No pianist commanded more respect and attracted more imitators than Red Garland during his tenure with Miles and Coltrane in the 1950's. His influence was equally apparent in the best-selling trio albums issued under his name in the early 1960's.

By the late 1960's most mainstream musicians were being drowned out and were all but forgotten during the dismal disco days of the 1970's. On this late l977 recording Red demonstrates that although the music, along with the volume levels, had changed, he hadn't. His playing is as impeccable as ever, all the more remarkable for its lack of straining at a time when the few older guys who were still working had "plugged in."

That said, it must be admitted that this is a pretty flat, uninspired meeting of major players. If there's anything close to a "surprise," it's the playing of the amazing multi-instrumentalist Ira Sullivan, who sticks to tenor sax yet doesn't yield an inch to his counterpart, tenor giant Harold Land. Red seems content to turn the repertory over to his side men, including two unmemorable originals by Nat Adderley (although Nat's "Red Alert" is as good an excuse as any for jamming on a Bb blues).

Characteristic of every recording made during this time, Ron Carter's bass is overly amplified while Frank Butler (I honestly can't think of a more underrated and underrecorded drummer in jazz) is sentenced to the background--a mix that contributes to the session's overall feeling of dryness if not sterility. Nonetheless, if you're a Garland or Ira fan, you probably ought to add this one to your shopping list.

5 out of 5 stars How did this get overlooked?.......2000-09-25

On the continuim between elevator music and great jazz you will find Gene Ammons, Stan Getz, Zoot Simms, Stanly Turrentine and Art pepper on both ends -- all of them capable of hard swinging as well as flaccid popular garbage. Howard Land, the featured sax player here, seems able to exploit the softer sounds of jazz without ever slipping away from the raspy blues idiom into Gershwin mushy goo. This CD is a perfect example of how to maintain swinging soul in every context: blues, ballad and bop. And don't forget about the rhythem section -- one of the best ever.

    Album Description

Warp 11's sophomore release "Red Alert" demonstrates the evolution the band made in the two years since "Suck My Spock", from sci-fi garage punks into interstellar rock gods. The first single from "Red Alert", "Everything I Do (I Do With William Shatner)" took off in 2003 to widespread media praise and college and alternative rock radio airplay.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Singing about Star Trek? Come on, why wouldn't this be cool?.......2007-05-12

This band's music rocks and it's nice to have the ability to control how it is imported to your computer. Far better than the, sorry you paid but are a criminal, attitude iTunes gives you. Or the recording industry as whole to boot. Rock on guys!

5 out of 5 stars Alert: Worth Purchasing.......2007-04-02

I just really enjoyed this album. It's a great blend of sex, rock and star trek. Makes you feel like Trekkies can be normal people too. Warp 11 writes inspired and creative music that is damned catchy. From the down to earth tones of 'Old Country Dr.' to the metal inspired 'Sto Vo Kor' Red Alert is a worthy purchase for Trekkie or anyone looking for a new take on the rock genre.

    5 out of 5 stars Warp 11 rocks!!!!!.......2005-10-06

Wow, this band is great. If your a star trek fan get all three of there cd's. Trust me you won't regret it. "Red Alert" is the best song on the album.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Band.......2004-12-27

Somewhere between Green Day and Frank Zappa, Warp 11 shows true talent and a great sense of humor. Not since The Who's "Tommy", Rush's "2112", or Pink Floyd's "Dark Side Of The Moon" have I felt compelled to listen to an entire album from start to finish.

No member of this band will likely be voted anything 'of the year', but together they create music that makes you want to dance, shout, laugh, bang your head, sing along, and mosh in your Star Trek uniform, all at the same time.

    5 out of 5 stars A Personal Favorite.......2004-10-01

Okay, I am biased. I love rock. I love sci-fi. But I have to say that the music on this album is beyond amazing! I listen to a lot of music. I own over 300 CD's. Warp 11's Red Alert is the first thing I turn on when I am looking for something that will entertain me and my friends.

First, Karl Miller's vocals are incredible as are the bass lines he lays down. Just listen to the opening of the title song and you will understand what I mean. Then listen to the guitar stylings of Mr. Brian Moore. He rivals just about any other rock guitarist out there. If Jeff Hewitt's drumming doesn't drive you to dance, you can't be breathing. What you don't hear on the albums that you get in the live shows is rock goddess, Kiki Stockhammer. The combination of these four powerful talents is something to be reckoned with.

Now, just be warned, they are a Star Trek band. With every song they pay a tongue-in-cheek homage to the beast the is the Star Trek franchise. You will fall in love with songs like "Trekkie Girl" and "Replicate (My Love)".

Having been to many shows and planning to go to more and to get any future releases, I definately recommend Red Alert and Suck my Spock to anyone looking for good music, good sci-fi and good humor all in one package!

One of the best songs Basement Jaxx has made! Although, don't get it confused with the UK version, both songs are totally different. Used in various commercials (food, drinks, clothing) and more, Red Alert is a classic by Basement Jaxx. If you want anoter good Jaxx song, check out: Do Your Thing

          5 out of 5 stars Cool!.......2001-08-17

There is nothing more to say other than this is a cool classic clubtune you will never get tired of!!

          5 out of 5 stars (No title).......2000-01-25

I'm a classical musician. Quite often, with the world around me, I fall out of touch; In efforts to keep up, I try to keep on top of the music it puts out. Music is, afterall, my language, and furthermore, it's the most accurate and compelling form of communicative expression of and amongst ourselves to whatever may be called the human spirit.

I don't remember exactly how I first came into contact with Basement Jaxx, but, however it was, it was a god send, an absolute blessing.

From the beginning YoYoYo's of the radio edit of Red Alert, I was instantly addicted.

It is Basement Jaxx which keeps alive my hope for any future in this world's music, but not only this, the fact that they exist RIGHT NOW and are making such music, it makes living a very wonderful thing!

If you want really great music, the kind for which the world's musically-educated elite will forever be ashamed to admit their love for the simple reason that it is not classical, it doesn't involve any intensive studies, it puts to waste their years of training and experience, it's just there right in front of you waiting to be enjoyed, the kind that infects your very existence and haunts you day and night, you will have to seek no further than tracks 2 and 3 of this maxi-single.

If I were forced to choose a cds worth of music and would never thereafter again be able to listen to any other music, surely, without doubt, I would devote the first 15 minutes which are the first three tracks of this disc...

4 out of 5 stars the return of disco?.......1999-12-04

every time i hear this song it always gets me hyped up and makes me want to dance and my friend always calls it 90's disco. the only fault is the music video because isn't it kind of stupid to watch cops arrest people for playing music?

5 out of 5 stars burger king music.......1999-10-04

it is a really cool dance song. but my friend calls it burger king music(???). anyways i think it is way better than the music that is out now. way better than LFO.

I bought this CD awhile ago for one particular track because of the slammin' beat (track#8) and gave me memories of listening to ''kool DJ Red Alert'' back in the days. This comp has some alright tracks and cool tracks that'll bring some way back memories. All Dance hall hip hop. Stuff that u won't listen as often on the radio nowadays. Only if it's on a mix show.
