Better than you would think.......2004-12-16

Noting the quantity of cheap used CD's available for this release, one could assume that this is one of Scott's weaker efforts. Not so. While not as great as "Apple Juice" (my personal Tom Scott fav), it has some memorable work. While most of the tracks are throwaway late 80's/early 90's smooth jazz fusion mess, tracks 2, 6, 7, & 8 are certainly worth a listen. This is nice background music, "musical wallpaper," if you will, but don't compare it to "Apple Juice" or "Born Again." It also amazes me that, in the 90's, labels were continuing to release CD's that clock in at 40 minutes - what a waste of disc space. However, since you can get this release on the cheap, Daddy says pick it up.

Kick back & enjoy.......2006-07-05

A great recording of Sammy with a rhythm section that cooks on every number. Sammy's in great form as well, playing his clarinet with a assured ease that one associates with musical maturity. You can still hear the George Lewis influence but it's incorporated into his own personal sound.
There are 18 tunes on this 72 minute studio recording from 1999. It's a pure New Orleans sound that originated in the 40's with the so called revival. Bunk Johnson, Big Eye Louis Nelson, Charlie Love, Emile Barnes, and many others from this period created a sound that is associated with recordings made by Bill Russell on his American Music label. Sammy's clarinet with Bill Sinclair on piano, Emil Mark on banjo, Colin Bray on string bass, and Big Bill Bissonnette on drums are continueing to make music in this tradition. This particular disc is an exceptional example of music played within that tradition and a superior example of Sammy's clarinet playing...with a rhythm section that, here, is just perfect.
