This boxed set is by far one of the best purchases I have ever made. As a Purcell freak, this hits every button I have. The cast of characters include the inequitable Robert King, New College Choir, Bowman, and a host of other venerable persons. Likewise the attention to period performance of these works makes it an essential addition to the library of any serious anglophile/Musicologist etc. Now if only the Britten Realizations of all Purcell's songs could be recorded alongside the originals! You will Love this set!

Surprising outing!!!.......2003-06-22

Run For Your Life is in my view the Yellowjackets hardest push towards "true fusion" and even post bop structures. The musicianship on this album appears to be more serious in a jazz-sense than on past albums. The gents even get a little bluesy on the cut "Even Song" which features group founder and ex-bandmate Robben Ford on guitar. (This song probably is a taste of what the 'Jackets would truly be if he was still in the group.) "City of Lights" and the title cut "Runferyourlife" are absolutely scintillating and a delight to listen to. I've owned this CD for nearly ten years and it continues to enter my deck. Each time I play it for someone, they ask who is that?! Overall, I rank this at the top of their recordings behind Four Corners and Dreamland.

A fun album to listen to.......2002-01-18

This is a very fun album to listen to. The songs have a driving beat that you can tap your fingers to. A nice mix of fusion/funk/jazz. Listen to the first song. I'm not a very good writer, the point I'm trying to get across is that this is worth getting. 5 Stars.

Run from Your Stereo.......2001-01-08

A fusion of acoustic and electric jazz. Tedious at times and very melodic at others. Very good to excellent sonics. Which ever musician is humming should have been muzzled. His oral histrionics add nothing and are patently distracting. Too much noodling and not enough structure, but over all this recording can be enjoyable. For die hard YJ fans and fans of Bob Mintzer.

The hardest thing to get around when starting to listen to the Yellowjackets is their label as "crossover." While this isn't entirely false, it is very misleading. In truth, the Yellowjackets are among the most responsive groups around, with a sound that is both versatile and wonderfully distinctive. This album is perhaps their strongest from a purist's point of view. On tracks like "Jacket Town," the group gets pretty soulful. Yet on "Muhammed" and "City of Lights," they play such adventurous material that the name "smooth jazz" couldn't possibly work. Even at their most pleasant, the Yellowjackets play with a surprising intelligence, Ferrante's gorgeous harmonies and Mintzer's excellent reed work complemented by Haslip's very individual bass playing and Kennedy's perfectly timed drumming. Things never seem manufactured though. On "Muhammed" Bob Mintzer wails away (on tenor) in a style reminiscent of late-period 'Trane and Ferrante pounds it out in an early Chick Corea vein. The Yellowjackets deserve attention from those with a serious interest in improvised music. This album should give evidence to that point.

The right singer for the right music.......2002-12-21

I love music like this that straddles the border between classical and pop or jazz. I had never heard of Valerie Errante before, but she has a perfect voice both for the more classical pieces at the beginning of the CD and the jazzier pieces at the end. She is one of those rare singers (Dawn Upshaw is another) who seems equally comfortable with both styles. If you don't already own a recording of "Blackberry Winter," it's one of those rare songs which can genuinely be said to be worth the price of the entire CD. Wilder reminds me in some ways of another composer who deserves a wider hearing--Ricky Ian Gordon. Hopefully this CD will help bring this composer the attention he deserves.

Northern Line may seem like all the other boy bands...and they are. However, they have a more "bad boy" image and their music is a lil' more tough sounding. Especially "Run for Your Life." There's really hard percussion and it sounds really tough, but it's fun to listen to. The bass is also to a really good beat. I enjoyed this song and the remixes are awesome, as all UK remixes are. :)

I thought "run for your life" was a very catchy first single for the boys. I think that they have worked very hard to promote their latest single "love on the Northen-Line". They deserve to do succeed in pop. Love the worlds biggest Zak groupie.

I went to London recently and heard Northern Line's newest single "Love on the Northern Line" and had to find out more. Then I saw their music video and said "wow! are they hot!" I went to Tower records and got this single and loved it as well. I hope they release something over here in the states because I really want their full length album when it comes out!

This CD is really cool, the song is a bit spooky and is very catchy. I really like the CD extra part on CD1 where you can watch the video and find the songwords. If I had to rate this CD I would give int 10 out of 10!
