Amazon.com essential recording
A vast audience received its first exposure to the music of György Ligeti through Stanley Kubrick's use of his haunting "Lux Aeterna" (despite the composer's lack of consent) in the film 2001: A Space Odyssey. This collection--part of Sony's invaluable Ligeti edition--places "Lux aeterna" in the context of Ligeti's other a cappella choral works, which together provide an overview of the evolving phases of one of the 20th century's most intriguing composers. In his booklet notes to the disc, Ligeti recalls the influence of Bartók and Kodály on his early folkloric compositions, from arrangements of traditional material to free, polyrhythmically inflected inventions on Hungarian folk texts, a format that allowed him some degree of experimental freedom from the strictures of "socialist realism" before he fled the Hungarian Communist regime. The breakthrough "Lux aeterna" is a classic example of Ligeti's trademark technique of "micropolyphony," enveloping the listener in mesmerizingly dense textures of cloudlike harmonies. From Ligeti's late period comes a triptych of "Hölderlin Phantasies." Their 16-voice polyphony transcends the simplistic distinction between tonality and atonality to explore "new kinds of half diatonic, half chromatic harmonies." The resulting sound world of fragmentary, dislocated epiphanies mirrors the unfathomable richness of the great visionary poet to uncanny effect. Throughout, the acoustical balance and conviction of the London Sinfonietta Voices give vivid shape to Ligeti's genius. -Thomas MayCustomer Reviews:
Surprising Variety in Modern A Capepella Choral works.......2006-08-24
Mostly unlistenable...........2006-08-23
I bought this CD and am returning it. It's just more & more of the sameness throughout the whole CD.
I realize that Ligeti is avant garde but I heard that if you like Gregorian chant (which I do) this CD is similar. I don't think it is. It's very disquieting and full of tension (great, if that's the mood you're looking for).
a handful of great Ligeti works........2004-09-06
brilliant choral music.......2003-07-21
is brilliant. Ligeti choral works is the first cd have got choral music on it and i love it.Now im going to get the other two cds in the ligeti edition.

Exquisite use of the voice.......2002-07-11
This album is a collection of a cappella choral works and which highlights Ligeti's great talent and skill in the use of the voice as a musical instrument. He, together with Yoko Ono, have excelled in this field though from different, sometimes conflicting directions.
When I listen to this I revel in it's glory. The sounds are ethereal and atmospheric, ghostly and angelic in a way that no-one but the composer can make them sound. I never want those sounds to end and in a way it is like having a sort of dependence.
I could go on and on and on about this but I had better stop. This is one essentila component of anyone's classical music collection yet it really defies categorisation. This is timeless, awesome music, not just for a generation but for a world. Lest Zeus strike me with a thunderbolt, these voices are sweeter and more angelic than the voices of the angels themselves.
Exquiiste. Words are insufficient to describe such beauty.

An Amazing West Coast jazz recording.......2004-06-22
Okay, so you take two West Coast jazz legends, Gerry Mulligan (who played with legends such as Chet Baker, Billie Holiday, Lester Young, Coleman Hawkins, and many others) and Paul Desmond (who also played with an illustrious group of musicians, but was best known for his work with Dave Brubeck), throw in some jazz/pop standards (All the Things You Are, Stardust, Way You Look Tonight, Out of Nowhere, Easy Living), add some of this and that (Two of a Mind, Blight of the Fumble Bee) and out comes this album, full of flavor and drive that one wouldn't think 2 white men with an alto and a bari could produce. It's upbeat, fresh, and simply wonderful if you're starting a collection of modern jazz.

mozart in my mind..........2006-08-04
Wonderful Selection of not as famous but good works!.......2002-11-13
The Sonata in D Major for two pianos is incredibly brilliant. The first piano holds the main melody while the second piano mimicks it, and then a huge crescendo and BOOM! It is all over the place! (My father and I are both Pianists, and we both specialize in Mozart piano concertos and sonatas.) This piece is wonderful to listen to, and I plan to learn it. The three piano concertos are also spectacular and the Jupiter Finale is superb. There isn't a piece on this CD I can honestly say is even close to okay, they are all exceptionally good. I suggest buying this CD to add to your mozart collection.
RESULTS.......2000-07-29
AFTER LISTENING TO THIS CD BUT A FEW TIMES I BECAME OVERWHELMED BY THE NEED TO KNOW MORE ABOUT THIS COMPOSER.
FOUR MONTHS LATER, I COMPLETED AN OPERA COVERING ALL THE WONDERFUL EVENTS OF THE EUROPEAN TOURS OF LEOPOLD AND WOLFGANG...WITH WOLFGANG'S ORIGINAL MUSIC.
I DO NOT BELIEVE I COULD HAVE DONE THIS BUT FOR THE INCREASE IN MY IQ FROM LISTENING TO THIS CD.
"MY FAVORITE MOZART CD".......2000-05-23
A decent selection of Mozart's greatest uptempo hits.......2000-05-10
Blasphemy, you say? Well, I enjoyed all the tracks equally at first, but as I collected more Mozart CDs and became more acquainted with his style, some of the tracks on this album grew weary from repeated playing. The movements from the Two-Piano Sonata, the Haffner Symphony, the Wind Serenade, and the "other" G minor Symphony (track 7) were the first to start grating on my ears. These are perhaps the "bottom of the barrel" on the CD -- melodic tracks that serve as a good introduction to Mozart's style, but are certainly not his greatest works. However, most of the other tracks are solid material that you can listen to again and again. The Magic Flute Overture (which I mentioned earlier) is the star selection of this album; it's a true masterpiece which benefits from a spirited performance. The selections from the Piano Concertos are also my personal favorites, and no-one can resist the triumphant Finale from the Jupiter Symphony.
But is it really "for your mind"? Well, if you think that you can gain several IQ points (or a few more A's on your report card) by simply listening to this CD, think again. Mozart won't make you smarter. Hard work and study will. Think of this CD as a "study aid" -- you can put it on while you're working, and the pleasant effect of the music will improve the efficiency of your thought processes. And of course, you'll become more musically knowledgable at the same time!
Highly recommended for beginning Mozart enthusiasts, and fans of classical music in general.

Recorded live at the Prince Music Theater in Philadelphia, this double CD is one heck of an extensive tribute to Stephen Sondheim. Backed only by Paul Ford on piano, Mandy Patinkin gets through nearly three dozen songs penned by the Broadway master. Some are obvious (excerpts from Sunday in the Park with George, in which the singer created the title role), others less so ("If You Can Find Me I'm Here" from Evening Primrose). Patinkin is often mocked for his shivering falsetto, but here, it's actually when his voice explores a lower register that it falters. What's more interesting is when he tackles songs usually sung by women, such as Follies' "Broadway Baby" and Company's "Another Hundred People" and "You Could Drive a Person Crazy"--the latter hammed up so much that you can hear the chewing of the scenery. A distinctively mannered interpreter, Patinkin remains an acquired taste, but fans of his will be in heaven with this set. --Elisabeth VincentelliCustomer Reviews:

Adequate performance; poor entertainment.......2003-05-04
a very disappointed fan.......2003-02-05
But (much of) this recording is disappointing, mainly because Mr. Patinkin's voice in the lower range sounds muddled and forced, as though he's lost ability to control it (however, the more falsetto sounds are as clear and sharp as ever).
And I don't care for the format of this performance. Live recordings should have live audience reactions: one (often unrelated) song after another without applause had me wondering when--if ever--was the audience was going to be allowed to react.
Also, while I've never had the privilege of attending a Patinkin concert, I imagined that--above all-- he would be passionate. Perhaps he was. But what (mostly) comes across on the CD is a somber--almost technical--performance.
I hope he's healthy, that mixed quality of singing on this recording was just a fluke, and that his next CD will be a Five-star as all his previous ones have been

Album Description
How come you've never heard of this record by a band that's sold millions? And why did it only sell 25,000 copies when it came out on dot.com startup Musicblitz.com in 2000?Well, it wasn't because the record isn't great. 'Freaked Out And Small' got rave reviews in CMJ, Alternative Press and All Music Guide, among others.
Presidents guitarist Dave Dederer offers a full explanation: "In 2000, the Presidents didn't even exist. We'd been split up for almost three years. A family friend of mine was doing A&R at this startup, and he offered us some dough up front to go in and cut a record for a download-only release. We told him we weren't a band, we weren't reuniting, we weren't going to play any shows, we weren't doing any promo and we'd make whatever the hell record we wanted to make. By the time we were making the record, Musicblitz realized that the web thing wasn't going to work. They decided overnight to become a brick-and-mortar record company, something they knew nothing about. And then they went bankrupt just a couple of months after the record came out. Personally, I'm blown away that it sold as many records as it did. And I'm proud of the record - it's probably my favorite thing we've recorded."
The Presidents are, of course, reunited. They've been touring the U.S. since early 2003 and released a new album, 'Love Everybody,' in August 2004. All three of the Presidents' NAIL releases are on the band's own PUSA Music label.

The Presidents at their BEST!.......2006-03-04
Lots of goofy content here, some that I'm probably wise not trying to figure out. But some rocking songs like "Tiny Explosions," "Nuthin but love," "Last Girl on Earth," and "Jupiter." Also some neat slower songs in the mix. The demos are interesting - many are the same tune but with some major differences - instrumentation, tempo, etc.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for any Presidents fan (and anybody who loves fun, toe-tapping music).
pure Presidents.......2005-07-11
You may think you have the disk on repeat, because the first half is the finished songs, and the second half is most of the same songs over again, in demo versions. This may be a little much -- the polished versions are all better than the demo versions. There's a reason why demos don't usually get released.
However, even if they hadn't included the demos this disk would be well worth buying. It's almost impossible not to dance to. It's also better than the recent comeback album. This was the Presidents at their peak -- at least, at their peak in the first go-around.

Having earned his composing stripes after the 1960s, John Adams had the pioneering work of Steve Reich, Philip Glass, and Terry Riley close at hand as he ventured into his trade. And, while minimalism's historical continuum helps place Adams, he used Reich, Glass, and Riley (among others) only as a starting point. And here's proof: a 10-CD retrospective of nearly all Adams's recorded compositions on Nonesuch Records, the label that also issued Steve Reich 1965-1995 and Kronos Quartet: 25 Years. Adams's Harmonium, a choral work of startling energy and effervescence, appears here in a new recording, as do distillations of both The Death of Klinghoffer and Nixon in China, two path-clearing operas. Over the span of a career covered by Earbox, Adams has returned minimalism to traditional instrumental ensembles as well as to projects that at once advanced a political commentary and took that commentary back to orchestral audiences. And so, in far less time than his predecessors, Adams created works that now play like standard repertoire pieces: The Wound Dresser and Shaker Loops and the Violin Concerto--all of them are here. What these works demonstrate is a fierce creativity on the one hand and perhaps a hunger for commercial advances on the other. Adams may at times be a bustling free thinker, but he sounds ever conscious of what audiences are listening to. As for the works themselves, they remain every bit as daunting as when written. Some may object to particular selections. I Was Looking at the Ceiling and Then I Saw the Sky, for example, hardly ranks with Adams's best work. But this box isn't a mere best-of; it's an almost-all-of. At times terrifically American--especially in the news-aware operas and their narrative pragmatism--Adams well deserves a major box set, and its coverage is appropriate to his varied, stylistically diverse output. As with any large-scale retrospective, Earbox--which fairly bristles with Adams's new composition, Slonimsky's Earbox--has spots where fans might balk at the quality of the composer's writing. But it's got a fantastic accompanying booklet along with its many hours of inarguably modern and thoroughly listener-friendly music. --Andrew Bartlett

harmonia in excelsis.......2001-11-12
Interesting, and likely intentional, is that two names in the extensive liner book fail to mention two great and glaringly obvious precursors: Carl Orff and Raymond Scott. Without "Carmina Burana," there would be no "Harmonium." Orff has his mark all over Adams's gifted and epic compositions. Similarly, though there are glib references to "cartoon music," the polymath engineer/musician Scott is a seminal figure in American music, and casts a large shadow over the witty juxtapositions and sense of play one loves in Adams's work. In all, an excellent career overview.
Our greatest living composer.......2001-07-22
That anyone can use the words "spoiled, overrated" amazes me. I emphatically disagree with "A music fan"'s review.
I don't think it's "mind-numbing"; I think it's spiritual and exciting. To me it's the most substantial music being created in our times.
I'm really sorry that anyone could fail to enjoy it, and really recommend others to listen for themselves.
Wonderful CD.......2000-04-02
