5 out of 5 stars some things just get better with time.......2006-08-15

and this is one of those releases that is just as compelling to listen to as when it was first released in 1970....heck lot better than the Sabbath Grand Funk Zep ELP Tull platters that were being mercilessly cranked for the longing public ear!!!

But more so...Dave Mason is still VIABLE now as back then....live he IS totally incredible....though I feel his subsequent releases including the overlooked DAVE MASON disk from 1974 is just as extrordinary. They guy knows how to sing a good lyric with a good melody...I mean does one need those augmented 7ths and ninths all the time to convey a GOOD SONG - hey those NAMES will not be mentioned....but are in the GUITAR HERO vein..... Thanks DM for some of the best tunes written of all times.

3 out of 5 stars An old friend..........2006-05-19

That I never owned before myself, but bought for a friend once. Dave Mason was one of the major songwriters for the late 60s British progressive rock group Traffic, a group whose ouvre spread out all over the place, from jazz-rock to honky-tonk to folk-rock and so on. His stuff was the stuff that didn't have a hint of jazziness in it. "Vagabond Virgin" from the second album is his, for instance. On this album, he forsakes Traffic's jazzy sound even more so, for this album has a DEFINITE folk/country-rock flavor, sounding a lot like certain American groups. You'll be reminded of Buffalo Springfield, CS&N, The Lovin' Spoonful and other sodbustin' rockers with this album, with songs like "World in Changes", "Only You Know And I Know", and "Look At You, Look At Me". His stuff is AWFULLY reminiscent of Stephen Stills' work.

One thing bothers me, though...When I first heard this album 36 years ago, (NGANGH!), I was actually pretty impressed by it, but listening to it now, there're only three, maybe four, songs that are really memorable on it. I seem to remember a few more hummables than this on it, but apparently, I misremembered. Or the re-masterers got a hold of the wrong session tape...who knows.

Originally, this album, on vinyl, came on a disc that had an earth-toned swirl pattern in the plastic and it immediately became a collectable, not to mention the fact that it started a trend that picked up years later among legendary prog-rock and new wave artists, using special plastics to put their music on, such as clear red, photo-imbedded vinyl, etc., to also make their albums collectables. Too bad that didn't trickle down to the CD, but there you have it. A good nostalgic piece with SOME good work on it from one of the major talents of the Woodstock era.

Not bad...not bad.

5 out of 5 stars A Re-Discovery.......2006-03-14

I had this album back in the early '70's with it's multi fold-out cover; now a collectible. Of course as happens when taste changes, I sold my copy 20 years ago. However, after hearing from some guitarists that Eric Clapton played on this LP, I had to find it again. Unattainable in my country on CD, thank goodness for Amazon. I'm now playing it continually, it has songs you instantly love. Dave Mason is a fantastic singer and guitarist and knowing he's supported by E.C. (uncredited on the original LP and this re-release!!) makes it sound even better. The style of music is well..... bluesy, somewhat Gary Moore style without the overdrive. I have no hesitation to say get it, you will be amazed. A lost classic that should be re-discovered by all.

5 out of 5 stars A Lesser Known Classic.......2006-02-01

The whole package. Great tunes, words, effortless guitar playing on every single song. If you love the Beatles, Cream, CSN&Y, Jefferson Airplane etc. you have to get this CD. I guess you could call it "folk rock" but Dave Mason is one of a kind, especially on this CD. Also, if you can find the original record, the multicolored disk and fold out picture of Dave is a collector's item. Oh, the good old days...

I thought it was the best then and It's still one of the best.

5 out of 5 stars Crowded House: Their Best Album yet.......2007-06-29

Recently I have become a big fan of Crowded House. Altogether I have four CH albums.
Neil Finn is a genius and a very strong, highly skilled songwriter. His skills bloom on this album the most.
'Together Alone' released in 1993 is their best album. Sure, their album before - 'Woodface' is good too, but I believe this album is better produced and filled with properly formed songs throughout. Atmospheric melodic pop, darker and more somber then earlier recordings with much more consistency.
May not contain the 'radio hits' like 'Together Alone's' predecessors, but it certainly has better songs as a whole. After many listens I still can't find a bad song, no filler fluff at all.
Highlights include "Nails In My Feet" - "Pineapple Head" - "Private Universe" - "Walking On the Spot" - "Catherine Wheels" (no not the band) and my personal favorite "Distant Sun"-
So many near perfect gems, it's really hard not to just include every song (13 in all) as a favorite of mine.
After a long break, Crowded House is back in 2007. After buying their first four albums very quickly, one after the other I will definitely get their new one as soon as it is released in July.

5 out of 5 stars The depth of this album, still so strong after all these years.......2007-02-13

I own over 800 cd's and consider myself someone who knows about great music. As much as i adore all CH albums this one stands out every time. To hear new things after 100 listens is simply magic. In my opinion Crowded House and (Radiohead Ok computer) are the only ones who come very close to the mighty Beatles. Together with Abbey Road and Ok Computer, Together Alone must be included in the best albums I posess. Very underrated.

3 out of 5 stars First Impressions.......2007-01-28

I was not familiar with Crowded House's work until this album. I'm not very impressed, lead singers voice and musicianship of group was mediocre, lyrics were interesting. To compare this album with works by the Beatles(one of the reasons I ordered it) is sacrilegious. For every Eva Cassidy,100's of performers and groups are relatively obscure for a purpose. However, don't tear down if you can't build up, the last(title) cut combining extensive Maori chorus with log drumming was exquisite. "Tis a gift to be simple"

3 out of 5 stars Good, but not memorable.......2006-05-06

I ran across this on ****** and downloaded the CD to check it out. It is a very fine set of songs, and the vocals and musicianship is first rate. But Beatles? One of the top albums of all time? No way, that's just silly. I'm not a Beatles fan, though I grew up with them, but I can hum every song off Revolver if you play the first note. I just listened to this and I can't hum anything. Pleasant music, but no hooks, nothing to grab onto. It always feels like they're about to reach one, but they never get there. The distance between good music and something that sticks is only a note or two, but it's a gulf as wide as the universe. The muse simply didn't live here, which is why this is "undiscovered". And will remain so.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Greatest Albums of All Time.......2006-03-01

This album is Beatlesque. Others have pointed that out. Niel Finn has a voice that's almost 50/50 in sounding like Lennon or McCartney.

The songs are hook-laden.

I can't think of many other albums that have this large a collection of great songs.

I rank this one up there with Smiley Smile and Revolver. Pity so few people bought this album or know any of the songs on it.

There's no better example of American pop culture's hall-of-mirrors ethos than producer Alan Carr's relentlessly buoyant 1978 film adaptation of the stage musical Grease. Inspired by that decade's rampant 50's nostalgia, it now paradoxically evokes the campy 70's excesses that spawned it. That sense of recycled decades in collision is underscored repeatedly on this deluxe, double-disc Grease-fest, especially on the set's second disc of bonus materials that spans vintage singles of the title track (its instrumental B-side) and "Greased Lightnin'," some sing-along karaoke tracks, and a handful of alternately slick/techo-savvy remixes (originally produced for the film's 20th anniversary) that are testament to its enduring, era-defying appeal. The original soundtrack itself has been treated to a stellar digital remastering that fills disc one, and remains a joyous monument to camp, sheer ambition, and exuberant nostalgic illusions. Includes a slip-cased, double-fold-out case and new booklet with complete song lyrics. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars You 're The One That I Want.......2007-04-03

The complete Grease experience. This cd is a two disc-set with disc one being the complete soundtrack, while disc two is all bonus material including the popular Grease Megamix. Fans of the movie would want to make this cd an essential part of their music collection.

5 out of 5 stars Prepare to be transported to Summer Nights.......2006-03-26

Well here we are with a great piece of history.

This album has not only captured the spirit of the movie but the essence of a 1970's version of the 1950's. I have seen this play live and yes some things are different. Yet I grew up on the movie. I even find myself singing some of the songs now and then. Of course you will never see me singing "Look At Me, I'm Sandra Dee." However I do keep this in my car as great driving music. This album is not you can pick apart and say things like missing songs, in the wrong order etc. It sounds and feels just right. There will be many versions yet this one is the Grease - Deluxe Edition [ORIGINAL RECORDING REMASTERED] [SOUNDTRACK] gives you more information about each of the tracks allowing you to feel that you have inside information and to feel that you know more of what went into the making of each song.

5 out of 5 stars Great Soundtrack & Fun Extras from an Enduring Musical........2004-07-06

I'm enjoying listening to this great soundtrack that I loved as a child after a long hiatus. I had it on 8-track 25 years ago. So it's fitting that I should get the 25th Anniversary Edition on CD. The 24 songs from the movie are just as everyone remembers them, so I'll talk about the Bonus Disc, which contains 10 alternative versions of the songs plus 2 previously unreleased instrumentals from the film.

Track 1 on the Bonus Disc is an instrumental version of the film's theme, "Grease", written and produced by Barry Gibb. Frankie Valli's voice has been replaced by a saxophone. The chorus is vocal, but the voices are not those in the original song. You could use this as a sing-along version, as it would be easy to sing over the sax. Tracks 2-5 are officially sing-along versions. "Summer Nights" includes the chorus vocals from the film and sounds good. "You're the One That I Want" has new chorus vocals of questionable merit. "Sandy" is a new arrangement. It's not as good as the film version, but you can sing along. Track 6 is the single version of "Greased Lightning" that you may have heard on the radio back in the day. It's differs from the original in that the bad words have been replaced for radio airplay. Tracks 7-8 are previously unreleased instrumentals from the film. "Greased Up and Ready to Go" is lively. Tracks 9-10 are mixes that I occasionally hear on the radio. The "Grease Megamix" and the "Grease Dream Mix" are fun, if awkward. Tracks 11-12 are Martian Remixes of "Summer Nights" and "You're the One That I Want". They retain the original vocals, but set them to a Latin rhythm. They make pretty good dance tracks.

This 2-disc set isn't in a jewel case. The case is paperboard with 4 panels that fold out. This is inside of a clear vinyl slip case on which the tracks are written. This isn't convenient packaging. On the bright side, the case won't crack in the mail. Tucked inside one of the panels is a booklet that contains lyrics and credits.

The "Grease: 25th Anniversary Deluxe Edition" is a terrifically fun soundtrack to one of the all-time great movie musicals. And for all those preteen girls who go wild over the movie with each new generation, the bonus material is perfect for parties and horsing around.

3 out of 5 stars If You Love Grease, You'll Love This - Only 1 Major Flaw.......2004-05-15

Disc 1 is like the original album, which I also own. 1 major flaw is that "Love Is A Many Splendored Thing" cuts off at the very end of it! I was upset by this, hence the 3 stars instead of 4. Disc 2 is a lot of fun w/some remixes and sing-a-longs, all in all, I'm pretty happy with it being that I'm a HUGE Grease fan. If you like Grease, you'll love this, it's fun. Too bad when they "remastered" it, they didn't catch there 1 mistake. Oh well, at least I have it on another album.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Better than you remember.......2007-04-03

Worth the money just for the Alone Together portion. The re-mastering quality is just excellent and I hear all sorts of instrumentation I missed on the vinyl. Who is the terrific piano player?

Alas, the booklet contains little or no information, sort of a waste, and the Headkeeper live set is forgettable.

Okay, so it doesn't have the swirling colors like the LP. Just listen to the music. Dave's best, far and away.

4 out of 5 stars But where's "SATIN RED & BLACK VELVET WOMAN"????.......2006-11-17

Right after "Alone Together", blue Thumb issued a single called 'Satin Red & Black Velvet Woman", which is nice as anything on the LP, and it wasn't included on the very patchy "Headkeeper". It's become a lost track, even tho it actually charted a week or two!

What a dang shame that BGO didn't bother to fit it on this CD...which is the only reason why I haven't bought it, yet.

I'm disappointed that it isn't included.

Since "Headkeeper" is a such a patchy LP, I would've issued "Alone Together" with something close to the original nifty packaging and splatter CD, and included three lost Mason tracks:

"Just for You" and "Little Woman", issued as a solo single for UK Island and both sides features Family as the accompanying musicians. "Just For You" was subsequently included on "Last Exit", but it wasn't a Traffic track.

"Satin Red & Black Velvet Woman"

Then, they could've coupled "Headkeeper" with the also patchy "Dave Mason & Cass Elliot" blue Thumb LP!

5 out of 5 stars Feelin' Alright About this Purchase.......2006-03-27

I absolutely LOVE this double CD! There are some duplicate songs however the ones off of the Headkeeper are live versions, which is fine by me. I have been listening to this CD non-stop since I got it and would HIGHLY recommend it to anyone interested in Dave Mason. The live Feelin' Alright is wonderful and funky. This Cd will be in heavy rotation on my 12 disc CD players so BUY IT NOW, you will not be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Alone Together/Headkeeper remastered: Priceless........2005-10-09

In anticipation of the August 5, 2005 release of this disc, I sold off my MCA copy of 'Alone Together', and watched the price of the few 'Headkeeper' CD's on the market fall from thirty dollars plus into the five dollar range. The import release came first in early August, and I assumed a US (less expensive) version of the disc would follow shortly. When that didn't happen by early October, I broke down and purchased the British release. Despite the extra expense, I can already tell you that this is a musical trophy.

The remastering of 'Alone Together' has clearly produced the finest finished version of Dave Mason's seminal work. It's the only Dave Mason studio recording to provide a balanced mix of acoustic and electric passages, and each of the offerings is a classic composition. The disc stands as one of the most complete artistic pieces from rock and roll's most illustrious era. If it's acoustic ballads you seek, 'Can't Stop Worrying, Can't Stop Loving', 'World In Changes', 'Sad and Deep As You', and 'Just a Song' are four of Dave's finest. If it's vibrant electric rock you seek, 'Only You Know and I Know', 'Waiting On You', 'Shouldn't Have Took More Than You Gave', and 'Look At You Look At Me' are also four of Dave's finest. The recording boasts a who's who of rock luminaries, including Leon Russell, Jim Capaldi, Delaney and Bonnie Bramlett, and Rita Coolidge, just to name a few.

'Headkeeper' was Mason's follow-up to 'Alone Together', and it features five studio tracks and five live recordings. The studio numbers, save the title track, show Dave already digging headfirst into the soft-rock, acoustic genre that would dominate his productions in the 1970's, and admittedly become rather tedious. The best of the five numbers are the opener, 'To Be Free' a piano based duet with Graham Nash, which blends nicely with the acoustic numbers from 'Alone Together', and the fouth song, 'A Heartache, A Shadow, A Lifetime', again featuring Nash. Sandwiched between are two more acoustic numbers. 'In My Mind' features a George Harrison-like slide guitar, while 'Here We Go Again' features an acoustic guitar plucked to sound like a mandolin. Both are less distinguished than anything heard previously on the disc. The title track winds up the studio offerings, and Dave finally pulls out the electric guitar and wah-pedal once again, but the song is weaker than the electric tracks offered on 'Alone Together', especially the lyrical content.

The disc comes to life again on the five live performances, all recorded during shows at The Troubador in Los Angeles. The opening and closing tracks, 'Pearly Queen' and the funk-rock 'Feelin' Alright' sound fresh and energetic with some fine guitar leads from Mason. Surprisingly, two of the more subdued tracks offered from 'Alone Together', 'Just a Song' and 'World In Changes', are beefed-up with the presence of vibrant organ runs and more pronounced drumming courtesy of "Dr." Rick Jaeger, and some nice conga from Flaco (Felix Falcon). 'Can't Stop Worrying, Can't Stop Loving' is actually more subdued than its studio counterpart, performed as a solo acoustic track by Mason.

The only disappointing aspect of this release is the packaging. The cardboard cover sleeve offers nothing not found elsewhere in the package, so it is rendered superfluous. The insert is dominated by John Tobler's biography of Dave Mason, but Tobler apparently had few resources to base his notes on beyond what one might find on the Internet. On several occasions Tobler "fills in the blanks" in Mason's career retrospective by speculating on what "presumably" or "apparently" was going on in his life. I also find it disappointing that no alternate takes or additional tracks were offered on the disc. To top it all off, the song listing appears four times in the inserts and on the disc itself, but nowhere are we offered the running times for the individual tracks. Thus, while the package looks nice, the substance is lacking. Despite these shortcomings, however, the fabulous work Dave Mason and crew did in writing and recording these numbers demands nothing less than a five-star rating. It is undoubtedly one of the finest musical productions I own.

5 out of 5 stars Dave Mason Revisited!.......2005-08-08

Dave Mason remains one of classic rocks long under-appreciated guitarists and singers. In 1970, fresh from his break-up with Traffic, Mason released one of the great rock albums of the early seventies rock era. "Alone Together" is without question his greatest recorded achievement. Never has Mason sounded better, with help from some cutting edge musicians of the day, like Leon Russell, Jim Capaldi, Jim Keltner, Jim Gordon, Carl Radle, Delaney and Bonnie, Rita Coolidge, Claudia Lennear, and Don Preston. The power of such rock anthems as "Shouldn't Have Took More Than You Gave", with it's catchy Wah-Wah pedal and lyric is simply stunning. "Only You Know and I Know", was a top 40 hit for Mason, and has been a hit for "Delany and Bonnie", and "Rita Coolidge", on the cover circuit. "Look At You, Look At Me", is the best tune on a classic album that contains absolutely NO FILLER. "World In Changes" remains a concert favorite to this day. The world certainly has changed since then. The second album on this CD "Headkeeper", was an album Mason did not want released, due to contract problems with the record company. Hot on the heels of "Alone Together", the company had five studio recordings to work with, and to supplement the album, five live recordings were added. Some of the studio standouts here, is "To Be Free", which is a Mason closet classic, which sounds like it was recorded during the "Alone Together", sessions, complete with slow intro, eventually thundering into an all out guitar/gospel chorus which features Graham Nash, Rita Coolidge, and Spencer Davis. Songs like "Headkeeper", "In My Mind" and "A Heartache, A Shadow, A Lifetime", are all well crafted with catchy melodies and lyrics, and most of all well played. The live recordings are also done well, and may have been recorded in a small club environment. The highlights include: "Pearly Queen", and his signature tune, which became a huge hit for Joe Cocker, "Feelin Alright". The Cd has been remastered, and the sound is flawless and better than the cheap MCA version, which is a budget priced cd that doesn,t even afford you a liner note! That is a horrible way to treat a classic CD of this magnitude. This version gives you an eight page booklet, which include seven pages of very informative liner notes by John Tobler, along with many photo's from that time period. Finally, after all these years, Dave Mason's classic "Alone Together", has been released on CD with the artistic respect it truly deserves. If you are a fan of Dave mason, or just fan from that great era in rock history, this is a must have for your music library. Don't miss this one.

5 out of 5 stars The absolute greatest EVER!.......2007-06-23

I have studied piano for over 30 years. I have been all over the US and have heard many of the greats: Peter Nero, Roger Williams, Liberace and Oscar Peterson. There is no doubt, all the aforementioned are excellent players, however, I would have exchanged seeing them all for a chance to have heard Cavallaro! His technique was flawless and he changed keys three times in most of his songs. Nobody puts in the little grace notes like he does, cause most people can't! Sure, he was not a super presence in the jazz field or on stages for classical concerts. However he defines the world of cocktail piano. It was even admitted by Liberace that he got the musical part of his act from Carmen Cavallaro.

One thing I don't understand is why he really never got his due. It is really hard to find info about Carmen. I would love to read his autobiography, or talk to some of his family members.

Anyway, this album will put a shiver down your spine with the usual Cavallaro magic. Despite the fact that some of the tracks are a little quiet, the talent still overwhelms you. I have just about every one of his alubums in vinyl, and have found this to be a great addition to my CD collection. You will too!

5 out of 5 stars easy listening @ cocktail time.......2005-09-16

My review is not typical or routine because this is the type of music I listen to and try obtain. I find it relaxing and stress defiant. Carmen Cavallaro along with Beegie Adair are two of my favorites. Both good for background music at a dinner party.

5 out of 5 stars He is the best I ever heard at cocktail piano.......2004-12-29

I study bepop style piano with a specialist in that area. He tells me all I ever need hear is Charlie Parker, Bud Powell, Art Tatum, Lester Young, Thelonius Monk, etc. Well, ever since I saw this Carman Cavallaro CD and grabbed it I've been listening to it over and over. It gets better the more I listen to it. Cavallaro is amazing. You cannot go wrong buying this Cd. Cavallaro is the Art Tatum of cocktail piano. Wow. I'm blown away. He has turned cocktail piano into an art form. Great CD.

4 out of 5 stars Waltzing Cavallaro.......2002-11-05

This album consists of mostly pre-war recordings, which sometimes affects sound quality. Selection includes also several recordings
from 1950-60 period, after Cavallaro disbanded his orchestra and decided again to perform as a soloist. For numerous enthusiasts of his decorative pianistics this album is hopefully the first among many to come.
Particularly the period 1950-1970 brought about many albums worth
attention: "Waltzing in the Dark", "The best of Carmen Cavallaro', "Carmen Cavallaro Remembers Eddy Duchin", "Poetry in Ivory" and many others, which deserve to be re-released on discs.
Reviewed CD will make happy all Cavallaro's fans and should become
shortly a collectible item. Nobody played like him and there is nobody who could replace his popular piano virtuosity.

4 out of 5 stars great music, spotty recording.......2004-05-11

I love the music on this album. The sound is so warm and inviting, I always want to turn up the volume and immerse myself completely in the music. But unfortunately if I do that I hear the noisy hiss, especially anytime the guitar's playing. I don't mind the background noise (glasses jingling, etc.) from the club, to me that just adds atmosphere. But the noisy hiss on the guitar is a bummer.
Anyway, that's just a nitpick. The album is great, I'm very glad to own it. I just listen to it with the volume at moderate level or else with the treble turned down or else with the volume cranked but listening to it from the next room.
Still, if one of these days someone found a way to rerelease this album with a cleaned-up sound, I'd be very grateful!

5 out of 5 stars it smokes.......2000-06-30

i found (alone together) a fantastic piece of duo jazz, an inspiration to would be guitarists on how to comp and play single line solos and make the grooves sound full and succinct.as a guitarist myself im always interested in hearing really good players, and these two are two of the best at what they do.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best cool jazz performance ever recorded........2000-01-23

Cool jazz at its best. Hall's clean tone and Carter's wood bass softly knit up song by song. Each note is very carefully played. I found one of the most beautiful harmony of string instruments in this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Private conversations between two jazz giants..........1999-09-02

Conversations between two jazz giants. Two string instruments make an amazing harmony, and sounds like one instrument. Two sounds completely melt together. Smoking jazz night in a club.

5 out of 5 stars Attraction of string instruments........1999-05-03

Giants of modern jazz, Jim Hall and Ron Carter's duo. This CD gives you an idea of how to play the guitar for rythm section and how to play the bass for lead section. Sounds of the two string instruments melt together and create a soft and beautiful harmony. Excellent CD. 'Click' 'click'

The line between evangelist and entertainer has always been somewhat indistinct. But as showcased on this 43-track, double-disc collection culled from his '87-'96 recordings for Elektra/Nonesuch/Atlantic, Michael Feinstein's dedication to spreading the gospel of the American song often blurs it beyond recognition. While the singer's pedigree for the task is impeccable (a long-term stint as Ira Gershwin's assistant and early career sponsorship by Liza Minnelli), his interpretations often succeed by playing off a tense axis of fervent emotionalism and a joyous sense of irreverence.

If his readings of romantic standards can sometimes tend toward the precious, they're often balanced here by sheer dramatic power and telling insights ("Isn't It Romantic" fairly bristles with ironic chauvinism) and a few loopy curves ("The Mole People," the Sherman Brothers' "The Ugly Bug Ball," and the previously unreleased "Rhode Island Is Famous for You"). Feinstein's dedicated song archaeology is also showcased on several gems: "Violin," a duet with Liza Minnelli; "My Favorite Year," a rejected ballad for the film of that name; the sublime "lost" Gershwin classic "Ask Me Again."

Sprinkled with live performances (the forum where Feinstein's talents seem most energized) and studio outtakes and featuring a lengthy print interview with the singer, the set chronicles both the pioneering efforts of one of pop music's most successful revivalists and, crucially, the cream of his beloved American songwriters, from stalwarts Gershwin, Berlin, and Porter to later legends like Herman, Styne, Lane, Martin, and Mercer. --Jerry McCulley

3 out of 5 stars Mixed feelings.......2005-10-05

This album has some GREAT songs on it; sophisticated swing being one of my favorites. However many of the other songs are too operatic and lame. I give three stars but this album is definatly worth it just for some of the better songs.

5 out of 5 stars Your love for this superb collection will be here to stay..........2002-07-18

The magnificently talented Michael Feinstein has made one wonderful album after another for nearly two decades. Now that Elektra and Rhino have put together this anthology, I am blown away by the versatility and diversity in Feinstein's recorded output. Such amazing rare gems, combined with the most beloved favorites in the history of American Popular Song. Assembled with wit, intelligence, and obvious affection on the part of the record company, this set is a keeper. You'll love it!

5 out of 5 stars He's done it again.......2002-07-15

Is there anything this man can't sing? This collection is so varied as to be the definitive collection of songs for any occassion.

This is perfect background music for a dinner party for a whole group but especially for two. Light, romantic and just gorgeous. You just can't go wrong when Michael Feinstein is your musical choice.

Way to go Michael, you've done it again!

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely 'S WONDERFUL!.......2002-06-10

There are very few contemporary performers who can hold their own with the truly great interpreters of American popular song. Michael Feinstein is truly the ONLY performer of the "younger" generation who really understands what these songs are all about. His incredible knowledge of this music, and his enthusiasm and passion for it have fueled his career. Rhino Records has done a truly outstanding job of putting together an anthology that exemplifies why Mr. Feinstein has become so beloved by audiences around the world. The packaging is excellent, and filled with interesting photos and background information about many of the selections.

This collection not only contains all the favorites one would expect, but a neat group of surprises too. I especially love the duets with people like Liza Minnelli and Rosemary Clooney, and the various collaborative efforts with songwriters like Jule Styne and Burton Lane accompanying Michael at the piano.

This collection is a classic to be treasured. Bravo Michael!
Bravo Rhino!

5 out of 5 stars A beautiful 2 disc CD-another hit for Michael.......2002-06-09

I have every CD Michael has ever made and this is by far one of the best ones because of Michael's range in singing and his wonderful singing voice. I love his duets with Rosemary Clooney and Liza Minelli. He is a wonderful performer on this double CD and am looking foward to the next CD.

5 out of 5 stars The Artistry of Nelson Eddy.......2006-11-04

Nelson Eddy's flawless singing and diction, with a modern orchestral accompaniment, make The Artistry of Nelson Eddy a romantic, sophisticated musical experience.

3 out of 5 stars Artistry of Nelson Eddy.......2006-08-22

Contemporary music which is sung well but voice not as expected of Nelson Eddy. The true baritone of his voice missing. This may be the recording but CD received in good condition.

5 out of 5 stars A Nelson Eddy Tour de Force: Magnificence here on earth.......2006-03-17

I have most of the movies of Nelson Eddy. Together with Jeanette MacDonald, this team produced some of the most romantic movie-operattas ever made. But the sound quality of those movies pale in comparison to the magnificence of this production.
Nelson Eddy has never sounded better, aided (1994) by more modern recording techniques, the quality here (even with a disclaimer) is beyond belief. He has got to be one of the premier baritones of all time. Singing Popular tunes adapted from classical themes, he may be without peer. I have a CD of the young Sinatra singing "Full Moon and Empty Arms" to Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2. He is not in the same universe with Eddy, whose crisp diction, timbre, fullness, perfect pitch, and passion ~ YES! PASSION! ~ must be heard (hopefully on on quality audio) to be fully appreciated. This is AWESOME. Maybe the best it gets here on earth. This is a wholly magnificent CD if you appreciate really good music, a fantastic baritone, and have a romantic bone in your body. I am astounded. Until today, I had no idea that Nelson Eddy was this good. This CD proves he was.

4 out of 5 stars For those who are already fans of N.E. only........2003-12-22

Nelson Eddy made these recordings when he was about 60 years old and it shows. He retained an excellent voice for a very long time, allowing him to perform successfully until the day he died. However, this particular recording seems to emphasize vocal decline, in terms of control and range. The problem may be that the songs presented here are mostly VERY GREAT classical orchestral pieces, to which are sung pop lyrics. In my opinion, most (but not all) of the lyrics to these songs are not worthy of their music and are incongruous. The last number, "Alone Together", an excellent Schwartz/Dietz song (which seems out of place with Rachmaninov and Ravel,) is actually a duet with Nelson's partner, Gale Sherwood. It was recorded a couple of years later than the other songs on this album, and is given a bossa nova background that in this mix, practically drowns out the singers! As to the overall sound quality, there are some light snaps and pops as on a record, but the music is loud and clear. I do not mean to discourage Nelson Eddy fans from buying this album. I think you need this album. I own this album. Buy this album, and encourage the release of more albums and radio recordings by Nelson Eddy. What I do mean to say, is that "The Artistry of Nelson Eddy" is not the best introduction to the artistry of Nelson Eddy. His recordings from the 30's, 40's or even 50's are a better purchase for the beginner. Once you love Nelson Eddy, then pick up this album.

5 out of 5 stars A Surefire Way To Turn A Bad Day Into A Good One!.......2003-04-12

The music on this CD is so beautiful it brings tears to my eyes every time I listen to it. It proves that the music of Nelson Eddy is simply timeless. I have always loved his voice, but these arrangements bring out the very best of it. It is highly recommended.
