5 out of 5 stars Meaty, beaty worldbeat music with heartfelt lyrics in three languages.......2006-09-30

A native of the African country of Burundi, Khadja Nin sings in French, Swahili and Kirundi, lamenting life's sorrows and yearning for peace, unity, love and acceptance among all peoples. In a refreshing change from much "popular" fare, Kadja Nin's work is not only musically satisfying, but has something worthwhile to say. Her low, throaty voice is deeply affecting as she emotes life's lessons, perpetrated by the immune and inevitably suffered by the disadvantaged. A mother struggles to raise her children alone. The loss of a sister and husband are mourned. An already destitute populace suffers the effects of war and embargoes. And yet the music resonates with hope, love and humanity. The stunning arrangements of the songs are sleek and modern, while the sentiments are simple, timeless, sadly, as relevant today as in decades or centuries past. Perhaps if more world-stage decisions were made by musicians and poets and mothers, as opposed to posturing politicians, discriminating zealots and disrespecting men with little lose, the world might be a better place for the rest of us. But all that being said, I'd love this album even if it had the same old "want you, need you, gotta have you" schlock-lyrics that many other artists feel the need to perpetuate (or fall back on for lack of anything more substantive to say). The music is that good--with all the power, variety, richness of sound and evolution of texture that any world music fan could want. So buy this album--you won't be disappointed in any respect! Try also the music of Deep Forest, Loreena McKennitt, Jesse Cook, Sukay and Sarband.

2 out of 5 stars Lost in translation.......2006-09-03

I am a big fan of African music and am always excited when I come across someone who comes highly lauded. So I was looking forward to Khadja Nin's "Ya" album.

Well, it surely didn't strike a chord with me. This being her first US release she made the big mistake to try to appeal to Western tastes (see the Sade and Sting comparisons that have been made in other reviews), regrettably sacrificing her Burundi musical roots.

It's an okay album but after listening to it this once, I certainly didn't feel to compel to listen to it again. Ever.

5 out of 5 stars If you like Sting ..........2005-05-23

The orchestrations remind me more and more of him as I continue to listen. Beautiful recording.

5 out of 5 stars This is such a classy recording.......2004-02-08

I still marvel how much music is still out there, unexplored and just waiting for the unsuspecting lucky listener to stumble across something as beautiful as this.

Even though sung in 3 different languages, the tunes will be easy for the western ear to adapt to without any problem, even as she stays true to her musical roots.

Melodic and heartfelt, this great recording deserves special attention.

5 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE!.......2000-12-15

Without a doubt this album rivals all my favorites! I can not get enough of it! The first time I listened to it it made me cry. Still it evokes emotions in me I do not even understand. Her voice takes you far away, the acoustics are phenominal! I was thinking of not sharing this with anyone, keeping it like a secret...a magic place to get away to, but it's just too good to keep to myself! Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars The soul of Africa.......2006-01-29

If you have ever lived and loved in Africa, Khadja Nin's voice in this album will evoke powerful memories of those times. Her voice is the sensual embodiment of humanity's longing to be heard and understood.

5 out of 5 stars MUST HAVE, WORTH MORE THAN 5 STARS.......2003-09-22

I HEARD ABOUT THIS ARTIST A LONG TIME AGO & I DONT KNOW WHY I HAVEN'T GIVEN IT A LISTEN TILL NOW. ALL THE TRACKS ARE OUT OF THIS WORLD BUT THE TRADE IS HER VOICE, IT'S ADDICTIVE ONCE U PLAY IT U WONT GET ENOUGH FROM TRACK ONE TO END.SHE SINGS IN ENGLISH, SWAHILI & SOMETIMES FRENCH. ITS NOT EASY TO CHOOSE A FAVOURATE TRACK BUT IF I WERE "FORCED TO PICK" IT WOULD BE "SAMBOLERA', "FREE", "LIYO LEYO", "MAMA", "SAVE US","WANNA WA MAMA'. MY ALMOST TWO YEAR OLD DAUGHTER LOVES "SAVE US" BECAUSE OF THE RHYTHIM, MORDEN INSTRUMENTS WITH A EUROAFRICAN MELODIES ARE ALL HERE. THIS CD IS EVERYTHING ONE CAN EVER NEED.JUST PURCHASE THE CD & HEAR FOR YOURSELF. IF U NEED A REAL DEAL BUY THIS CD & ANOTHER ONE TILTLED "YA".

5 out of 5 stars Excellent - but it's all on other albums.......2002-09-18

Khadja Nin's music is absolutely fabulous - sexy, catchy, soulful intelligent African pop. But every song on this album is on either "Khadja Nin" or "Ya Pili", with the single exception of Sina Mali, Sina Deni which has appeared before on a compilation album (United Voices of Africa).

Does this album really capture the best songs from the first two? I don't think so - I'd recommend buying "Ya Pili" first (despite the title, which means "second") and then if you're hooked (which you probably will be) you won't hesitate to buy "Khadja Nin" and "Ya".

5 out of 5 stars A very inspiring voice.......2000-09-05

Kadj nin is one of the greatest voice of Africa, she has the most sensuel voice ever. This Album is her very best. Peace on Africa

5 out of 5 stars This CD will change your life.......2006-01-04

What a beautiful recording! And it has been influential in so many ways. Those girls who sound like they're singing backwards have shown up as samples in so many things that I've heard that it's laughable. The drum ensembles were the basis of a whole English pop movement (and listen to Adam and the Ants and Bow Wow Wow for the usage that Malcolm McLaren made of them). And that guy on the cover! His deep instrument and his breathing song...worth more than any thesis on African retentions in the Blues. One picture...as they say. The new tracks added for the CD don't add so much, as far as I'm concerned.

5 out of 5 stars Wow.......2007-03-20

I have this album on my iPod, but keep it out of the rotation on Shuffle since a 30-minute drum track sorta chokes the concept of shuffled music. That said, it's absolutely hypnotic and I have a hard time sitting still when I listen to it, especially on headphones.

2 out of 5 stars Frankly, It's Not Too Exciting.......2006-11-05

The liner notes claim that 41 different rhythms are employed throughout this 30 minute drumming workout. I would be extremely hard-pressed to identify them, so I may be way out of my league in writing this review. But I happen to dig African drumming and this CD is far from the most impressive drumming I've ever heard.

I don't want to downplay the cultural significance that drumming has with the people of Burundi, but I expect your average non-devotee would find the proceedings here to be too repetitive to be of much interest (as might be expected). They do play with passion, but this passion is most evident from the enthusiastic cheers that are consistently interspersed throughout the entire recording and these yelps quickly grow tiresome. A steady mid tempo is maintained for the entire duration and the general feeling actually comes off more laid-back than energetic. Possibly the most interesting thing about this recording is the occasional singing, especially during a brief break from the drumming about 7 minutes in.

Clearly much is lost in translation from the spectacle of a live performance of these musicians who without a doubt display some subtlety and skill. So I would say this recording isn't likely to appeal to anyone beyond those who have a vested interest in this music or possibly students studying the culture of Burundi and its connection to drumming if not actual drummers.

1 out of 5 stars MYSTIQUE DU BURUNDI?.......2005-10-06

I have not purchased this album yet, but I am looking for a particular track and I am wondering if it on this CD and I can't find a list of the tracks on this CD. Is "MYSTIQUE DU BURUNDI" on this CD? And if so, how would you describe the quality? Thanks! . . Michael

5 out of 5 stars IN#$%^ING-CREDIBLE.......2005-02-15

I have to go with the Mighty Quinn here: this is powerful music, and if you're even looking at something like this do yourself a huge favor and buy it. If you like Gabriel's Passion, if you like Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, you will love this album.

5 out of 5 stars Sacred Ingoma.......2003-06-06

I have not heard the CD, but I am Burundian and I have experienced Drumming both as a player and as a spectator. The best way to appreciate them must be live and visual, or if you cannot see them in the rare concerts, buy the CD and play it at maximal volume on a good sound system. It is thunderous like a polyrithmic waterfall!!!! One important thing to remember is that Burundian drumming or INGOMA as it is known is sacred. It is played at important national events, In the pre-colonial past it was the symbol of royal authority

5 out of 5 stars For Fans of the Film, or Sakamoto, a Worthwhile Purchase.......2006-11-13

As with most soundtrack albums, you'll buy it because you really liked the film and want an aural souvenir of it. "The Sheltering Sky" certainly works in that regard. It even has the Lionel Hampton number used over the opening credits. Unfortunately, the tracks are not sequential, which lessens the souvenir value a bit, but it's still a good buy for lovers of the film or for fans of Ryuichi Sakamoto's music.

    5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Beautiful.......2005-11-14

This is a timeless, haunting soundtrack. One of Sakamoto's best, and thanks to a supporting cast of great music - this is truly a soundscape best heard in totality. Any fans of Sakamoto's work or even those who love movie soundtracks - you absolutely have to get this. Penetrating and atmospheric.

    5 out of 5 stars Stunning Sky.......2004-10-25

The Sheltering Sky is one of my favorite scores. The film itself is flawed but fascinating, and its score is one of its highlights. The Sheltering Sky Theme is so moving and haunting that it ranks up there with "Once Upon A Time In America" and "The Mission" as a brilliant theme music.

This soundtrack is hard to find but worth seeking if you love score music.

5 out of 5 stars The one and only!.......2000-01-05

this Bertolucci movie was really beautiful and so is the soundtrack. It is simply brilliant & in my opinion Sakamoto's very best! A mixture of ancient sounds, slow strings, islamic chants and heartbreaking melodies, just BEAUTIFUL !

Buy it, it's a must! Rik

      5 out of 5 stars Haunting Strains from a War-Torn Land.......2003-10-02

For me, this recording is the most provocative of the Nonesuch Explorer Africa Series. Each selection retains an unusual distinctive quality that allows it to linger on the listener's memory for hours. The inventive and engaging rhythmic figures, combined with the peculiar sonorities, set this disc apart from other recordings of African music I have heard. The flute playing on this disc is simply phenomenal; the serenity evoked by "Shepherd's Flute" is remarkable. It is indeed ironic that such music originates from a country with such a tragic history. If you had to limit yourself to only two discs in the Nonesuch Explorer Africa Series, this one and the excellent "The Soul of Mbira: Music of the Shona People" would be the ones to get.
