Glowing Oldies.......2007-06-09
The tunes on this CD make you positively glow with peace and relaxation. The song Burning Bridges Lost Forevermore is the best of the bunch.
Really great!.......2007-03-09
We are extremely pleased to have found this DVD. We love this music, especially "Burning Bridges", and I was surprised to find "Small World" which has also always been a favorite.
Memories.......2006-03-11
This cd will bring back some memories! I would reccomend it to anyone seeking those oldies but goodies. It has all the good songs!
Shades of the 60's, Man........2005-09-10
This is a real neat collection of various tunes from the 60's. The one song theme from "Kelly's Heroes" is worth the cost of the whole CD.
There are several other very nice songs on this CD. Some Patriotic....
Give this a listen, and if you're over 40 you'll say.."Hey, I remember that..".
i must have.......2003-11-30

AMG Review.......2007-02-24
The grunge era's most overlooked masterpiece, Congregation was the Afghan Whigs' breakthrough album, an incendiary and insidious set which bridges the gap between the noisy aggression of the band's early releases and the soulful swagger of their later work. Slipping with ominous ease into the sinister, self-obsessed Lothario guise which would serve him so well from here on out, Greg Dulli announces his arrival as a truly magnetic presence -- by turns predator ("Tonight") and prey ("I'm Her Slave"), he's the guy your parents always warned you about, delivering each syllable of his remarkable lyrics with equal measures of innuendo and venom. Equally startling is the Whigs' musical growth -- while still unmistakably a member of the Sub Pop stable, there's a greater maturity and depth to their sinewy sound, with a newfound grasp of mood and nuance on tracks like the opening "Her Against Me" and "Let Me Lie to You" -- the wah-wah guitar which dominates "Turn On the Water," meanwhile, offers the first taste of the funk ambitions to follow. It was hardly a surprise when the Whigs jumped to Elektra soon after -- Congregation was clearly their ticket to the big leagues. ~ Jason Ankeny, All Music Guide
Only one great song on this album.......2006-11-10
or in their entire career for that matter. I have tried to like this band, but Greg Dulli just won't shut up. Every song is his snide lyrical diatribing, on and on and on. The guitarist keeps things mildly interesting, but on this album in particular, the drummer also won't shut up and play a straight beat for once. It's like three guys in their own worlds, and they mash it together and call what they've done songs. EXCEPT for the one decent song they did, the only rock song I can think of that is hard, psychedelic, passionate, powerful, and set to a waltz beat of all things. "LEt me lie to you" is the best song they ever made, BECAUSE everyone in the band is given room to breathe by the song's framework and tempo. Instead of piling in on top of each other till the end of the song like they usually seem to do, everyone agrees to hold back until the rushing choruses, and it's less muddled and better orchestrated for it. IT's a shame they didn't do any other songs like this, at least none that I have heard. I tried to like them, I really did. I wanted to find the band that made that one song, and discover a whole treasure chest of dark, passionate, noisy music like that. Too bad, no wonder they drifted apart.
best of All.......2006-02-11
This was the Best Whigs Album imho before they went more "Mainstream" and "Commercial" with Gentleman.
One can listen to this album over and over again w/o boredom, unlike Gentleman's 2-or three pop hits and droning monotony.
Although different genre it would be like comparing the passion of Metallica's "Kill em' All" to the more mainstream="And Justice for All".
Band?.......2005-08-06
I think Afghan Whigs is the worst band of all times after Cheap Trick.Someone said to me that this album was the best by them, did he drink some bottles of tequila before?
Whigs are white man's soul........2005-01-06
One thing you can say about the Whigs is that for a bunch of white guys, they sure seem to have alot of soul. Most of the songs on here are funky, and groove oriented. But not the sort of funky as in dance and party, but more of the sort of funk about getting down, and making love.
It's alot of love and regret in these songs though, and Duhli really lays it on thick. Listen to him squeal in "I'm her slave" and "Untie the Boat". The writing isn't as sharp as on Gentlemen, and the sound and production aren't as great as on Black Love, but this is still an essential whigs disc.

Very good!.......2003-06-23
Most of the songs were well performed on this CD!You'll love the upbeat 70s tempo and you'll be singing along and tappinng your feet. The only gripe I have about this CD is the slow and boring "Lavender Blue"-it's so slow that it will put you to sleep.I personally think they should've done "Tiki Room" or "So This Is Love" instead.
Great CD of Disney Classics.......2002-07-01
The Mike Curb Congregation give some lovely performances of these Disney treasures. The ballads are especially beautiful. "A Dream Is A Wish Your Heart Makes" is downright gorgeous. "When You Wish Upon A Star" is fantastic and gets a really heartfelt treatment. The arrangements and vocals are great on this disc. Some of the songs like "It's A Small World" and "Spoonful of Sugar" from the Mary Poppins medley, have groovy seventies arrangements, but they are really fun. I can remember when this album was played in the waiting area for Walt Disney World's "Mickey Mouse Revue".
Other standouts on this disc are "The Snow White Medley" ( really nice ) and "Once Upon A Dream" from Sleeping Beauty. If you love classic Disney songs, this CD is for you.
Pretty bland stuff.......2001-12-07
Look for interesting vocal arrangements of these classics elsewhere - this is pretty bland stuff, with the medleys (Snow White and Mary Poppins) coming off especially forced. The ballads here are some of the best written for Disney productions, but all are given generic, ploddy and syrupy sweet renditions. Of the other numbers, "Winnie the Pooh" made me yearn for the Louis Prima version, and "It's a Small World" had me leaping for the fast forward button. There are bright spots, however, and they are dandies: a rousing "Bare Neccessities" complete with a snazzy kickline coda and a terrific, wonderfully arranged "Zip a Dee Doo Dah" that is sure to put a smile on your face and a spring in your step. Two stars for two good cuts on an otherwise blah CD.
Beautiful, fun Disney music, great record!.......1999-09-29
The Mike Curb Congregation do some great versions of these Disney songs. This singing group is just great. This album has beautifully arranged medleys from the great films, and lively renditions of the more spirited Disney numbers. It is a pleasure and will definately put you in a great mood.

The gunslinger takes the pulpit and despatches fewer souls........2007-04-05
Wish I could warm up to this album. The "world's fastest saxophonist" holds back on his technique, the lightning-fast articulations, double-timing, etc., but what that leaves is a pretty basic, limited rhythm-harmonic vocabulary. Eighth-note lines alternating with held top-tones and, of course, that distinctive sound. In fact, the "Little Giant's" tone has a lot in common with his namesake's, the Big Giant Dexter Gordon's--slow, "Leslie-like" vibrato and a way of "sticking" his notes in favor of smooth legato tonguing. But Dexter's behind-the-beat phrasing and logical-emotive story-telling, employing all of the tension-creating notes of a chord's extensions, is not nearly as much in evidence in Griffin's playing.
"The Congregation" is another variation on "Show Me the Way to Go Home" changes (i.e. "The Preacher"). And all of the tunes are practically interchangeable in tempo, expecially with "I'm Glad There Is You" taken at a medium rather than ballad tempo. Helping offset the homogeneity of the tempos is the happy choice of tunes, each a winner in itself. Some of the soloist's most impressive work on the date comes on "Latin Quarter," especially with its double-time chorus and concluding cadenza.
Still, I'd tend to go with one of Griff's dates with Jaws (Live at Minton's) or Ira (Blue Stroll) or the commanding "Return of the Griffin" ahead of this one. The rhythm section is predictably fine (just like the last hundred or so CDs I've purchased with Paul Chambers plus Sonny Clark, Red Garland, Wynton Kelly, Kenny Drew, or whomever). At least "The Congregation" doesn't disappoint like "A Blowin' Session," the three-tenor date that fails to live up to its promise due to an overly "hot" audio mix which, even on the remastered edition, practically makes Griffin, Coltrane and Mobley sound like three undifferentiated buzz saws.
Griffin the LEADER.......2007-01-01
This is a must have for anyone's collection, and Rudy Van Gelder has done yet another superb job at bringing these old Blue Note recordings to life. Johnny Griffins' blowing on his tenor sax is so strong and funkified, and he has a great cast of sidemen along for the ride: Sonny Clark (piano), Paul Chambers (bass), and Kenny Dennis (drums).
By the way, who DIDN'T Paul Chambers play with throughout the 50's? Man does he stand out on these tracks, by the way.
The title track, "Congregation", is a a solid piece from start to finish. Kenny Dennis and Paul Chambers keep the beat throughout on this album, and Chambers gets to show his stuff on more than a few occasions. But the true star on this album is Griffin himself, who proved himself a solid leader and an equal among others like Coltrane, Mobley and Gordon. This album right here is musical bliss, and I only wish Rudy would crank them all out faster. Oh, you also get a bonus track on this release called "I Remember You" that was not on the OG LP.
This album is a must if you want a great remastering job of this classic album or if you are new to the world of Johnny Griffin. The Congregation is THE place to start and belongs in every jazz lovers' collections.
A very good company!.......2006-08-25
The super famous Congregation with the ultra cool Andy Warhol cover has finally been reissued in the Rudy Van Gelder Blue Note series. In this album the Griff played with some very good pals, Sonny Clark (piano), Paul Chambers (uprightbass that he played even with the arch in his solos), Kenny Dennis (drums). The opener is an original by Johnny, a sort of Doxy, if you know the tune by Sonny Rollins. It is a very nice tune, a funky-blues infected tune, it has a sort of backbeat drum, "hand clapped" arrangement. The second tune Latin Quarter is a contrafact by John Jenkins (a melody based on Tangerine chord progression), is in swing time (it's not a latin), medium tempo. I'm glad there is you is a standard taken not too fast. Main spring is a fine blues, medium tempo too. It's you or noone by Styne-Cahn is the second pure standard and the fastest tune of the album. Johnny is in top form here and Sonny Clark is a good choice for him, because he is very good in comping and he is a boppish kind of sololoist. The last tune I remember you is a bonus track that was not present in the original LP of the fifties is medium tempo. I'm sure you know what kind of player Johnny was at the time. An hard bopper very into Bird's discoveries very technical, with great chops, but very near the blues feeling. This Congregation was the last of three albums Johnny recorded for Blue Note (Introducing and Blowing session were the other two). I have almost all the things Griffin recorded in the fifties and sixties. This one is surely a very consistent and interesting release.
