Customer Reviews:
Their aptitude and diversity appeals to a broad population base.......2007-05-19
Special Consensus' recent successful albums have songs from mandolinist Ron Spears ("I'd Like To Wander back To The Old Home" and "Lift Your Voice in Prayer"), as well as a Celtic-flavored piece ("Josie's Reel"), original instrumental ("Burns Breakdown"), something from the traditional bluegrass canon (Roy Acuff's "Branded Wherever" that was recorded by Flatt & Scruggs), and compositions from contemporary tunesmiths ("Ten Mile Tennessee" and "Rich Man's Coal" and "The Road To You").
Special Consensus also looks for repertoire from other genres that can be `grassed up. Take "Down The Trail of Aching Hearts," for example, from Hank Snow's classic country volume. A song that was sung by Marty Robbins, "The Shoe Goes On the Other Foot Tonight," serves as their new regular bass player David Thomas' recording debut as a lead vocalist. A band member since 2006, Thomas hails from Alabama. Or another unique highlight is what has become a signature tune for Special Consensus -- Irving Berlin's classic jazz standard, "Blue Skies." Last but certainly not least, the band's award-winning formula incorporates some key guests to embellish their sound in places. These hired hands include stellar Arkansas fiddler Tim Crouch, talented Dobro-players Rob Ickes and Phil Leadbetter (one cut apiece), and skilled bassists Tres Nugent and Tim Dishman. It's Dishman who get the nod to take a grooving bass break in "Blue Skies." Nugent had been a regular band member but moved back to his Louisiana home to spend more time with family.
The band has a well-established track record of getting songs into the bluegrass and gospel charts, and their albums are among the genre's top recordings. I expect this release to garner just as much notoriety and fame. In a nutshell, it is their aptitude and diversity that make them very appealing to a broad population base. Cahill's Irish ancestry and their regular tours to the U.K and Ireland have also won them a legion of fans across the pond. (Joe Ross, staff writer, Bluegrass Now)

All of the ingredients for a "best of 2005" nomination.......2005-04-08
After opening with Johnny Williams' "What Will Become of Me," the set progresses through four of mandolinist Ron Spears' songs, three of guitarist Justin Carbone's, and one of banjoplayer Greg Cahill's. Also included are a traditional offering (Today Has Been A Lonesome Day), a Pete Goble/Leroy Drumm piece (She's Walking Through My Memory), and a Carl Jackson/Alan Jackson song (Two Minus One). The latter has a particularly nice hook. The band is rounded out by bassist Tres Nugent, and special guests Randy Kohrs (dobro), Andy Leftwich (fiddles), Josh Williams (mandolin one cut), Tim Dishman (bass one cut).
The ever resourceful band takes its name from the writings of Carlos Casteneda, an anthropologist who wrote about the mystical and spiritual beliefs of a Mexican Indian tribe. "Special consensus" was a Yaqui Indian state of mind where "all the good things in life connect with the good things of the spirit." The band was formed in 1975 by Greg Cahill whose early influences ranged from accordion-driven polka music to Flatt and Scruggs. And having a master's degree in social work no doubt helps one become a bluegrass star too. The band's versatility comes through strongly in the material chosen, mostly with a crisp banjo-centric traditional sound but also well-rounded with some country, Celtic and western swing treats. Ron does most of the lead singing, but Justin sings lead on two of his three self-penned cuts. His third, an instrumental "Beginner's Luck," is a 3-minute pyrotechnical guitar, banjo and mandolin romp. Had it been included, Leftwich's fiddle would've really enhanced that piece like it does with Cahill's dynamic instrumental reel, "Old Town Ceili." Special Consensus' vocal quartet is in the spotlight on Spears' "Lord Show Me the Righteous Pathway," nicely arranged with just guitar and mandolin accompaniment.
Discriminating bluegrass lovers will find plenty to enjoy on "Everything's Alright." This is one artistic and mellifluous album from a very seasoned band with abundant experience, exuberance, energy, and integrity. (Joe Ross, staff writer, Bluegrass Now)

Dynamic banjoist Greg Cahill has added Andrea Roberts, on bass and vocals, and guitarist Chris Walz to the Special Consensus lineup for their second Pinecastle album, a recording that reaches through a wide spectrum of acoustic styles yet remains true to its bluegrass roots. Cahill's inventive banjo rings out from the start on "Another Day with the Blues" and adds classic bluegrass drive on Walz's "Billy Boy." Instrumentals "Irish Medley" and Bill Monroe's "Strawberry Point" highlight individual prowess, while the fine vocal stylings of the band are evident on "Nothing but the Wheel" and "New Jerusalem." Norman Blake's "Slow Train Through Georgia" and the swing tune "Silver Dew on the Bluegrass Tonight" complete a wide-ranging package. --Brian Hollander

Top Notch.......2003-11-16
Expert flair...musically sophisticated contemp bluegrass.......2002-11-12
On this album, Greg Cahill, originally from Chicago, really tears up his original composition, "Chahill Special," with the other band members also trading off some hot licks to share in the virtuositic fun. Cahill is the original founder of the band and currently serves as the group's senior member. He has assembled some young and flashy talent to give the band a brilliant, fresh sound. Guitarist Jamie Clifton, from Oklahoma, has won several guitar contests including the prestigious Oklahoma State flatpicking championship in 1990. From 1995-2000, he performed with the bluegrass gospel band, The New Tradition, before joining The Special Consensus in 2001. On this CD, Clifton sings lead on three songs (If I Could Only Have Your Love, Bobby and Sarah, and Come Unto Me). He also demonstrates his songwriting skills with "Amy and Trevor," a beautiful but very sad song about a man's family lost as a result of his driving under the influence.
Bassplayer Tim Dishman, from Indiana but with family roots in Alabama and West Virginia, joined The Special Consensus in 1999. He offers his lead vocals to one cut, "The Old Man in the Park," on this project. Finally, mandolinist and primary lead vocalist Josh Williams is a young talent that shows boundless artistic promise. By age twelve, he had won banjo, mandolin, guitar and dobro awards. He joined The Special Consensus in 1999. His self-penned instrumental composition, "This Ain't Alabama, Uncle George," is a hard-driving picker's delight that just makes me want to sit up straight and say "Wow!" Williams sings expressive lead on six of this album's songs. -- Joe Ross, freelance writer, Bluegrass Unlimited magazine
