Album Description
The Bayou's barnstorming bandleader Buckwheat Zydeco is back with his first studio disc in eight years, and he'll be on tour all over the country.Jackpot! combines soulful original tunes, inspired playing and singing, and the trademark exuberance that's made him the world's best-loved zydeco artist, and has earned Buckwheat Zydeco the sobriquet "the world's greatest party band." There's plenty of Buckwheat's signature accordion, and for the first time ever Buck specifically features his soulful mastery of the horizontal keyboard on a three-song Hammond B3 "Encore featuring Organic Buckwheat."
Jackpot! opens with the strutting "I'm Gonna Love You Anyway" before swinging into "It Must Be Magic," a tune that leads into a string of great new songs. The sweetly funky title cut and the slinky guitar breaks of "Rock, Boogie, Shout!" are due for road tests at festivals, theaters and clubs across the U.S. and Canada during the months ahead. Zydeco fans can expect more of the rootsy boogie that fuels "Come And Get Yourself Some" and the Creole French "Old Times La La" on the album, two of nine accordion-led originals on the disc.
Jackpot! takes a surprising and very cool side trip as it goes home with a trio of tunes offering a 18-minute encore presentation of "Organic Buckwheat," reuniting Dural with his first love, the Hammond B3 organ.
Dural's venerable keyboard playing stands up to anyone playing the B3 today -- whether it's the wailing blues of "Buck Goes Downtown," the jazzy tour de force Jimmy Smith tribute "Buck Goes Uptown," or on the anthemic reggae of the finale, "Buck Goes To Trenchtown." The Hammond organ only brings Buck back closer to his roots - as he first gained renown playing the Hammond in zydeco king Clifton Chenier's legendary Red Hot Louisiana Band in the 1970s.

Must Buy For Those Who Like Real Home Cooked Music!.......2005-06-07
First, just cue up the 11th cut- Buck's Going Uptown. Invoking the late great Jimmy Smith at the start, Buck just rips the Hammond B-3 on an up-tempo funky soul infused jam. Is there any better summer music than this? Does anyone else play this stuff anymore? The only problem is the song only clocks in at 6:45. Can we have a real Jimmy Smith half-side version next time? By the way, very tasty guitar solo on this one.
After that gets you in the mood, go back to the album opener for some Grade A Prime zydeco. No clunkers here, every cut is great. Standouts for me are track 6 and 9 as well as the opener. Of course, the last three tracks with Buck on the Hammond are superb.

Rhythm reigns supreme on Creole Moon, which cuts a sinuous, syncopated groove through the various styles that have informed the good Doctor's career. The bayou funk of "Bruha Bembe" recalls the juju mysteries of Dr. John's "Night Tripper" phase and the album-opening "You Swore" adheres to the hip-shaking tradition of "Right Place, Wrong Time," while the jazzier sophistication of "Holdin' Pattern," "Queen of Cold," and the title track show how far he has extended his musical terrain. Among the highlights are four songs cowritten with the late Doc Pomus, including the soulful balladry of "Imitation of Love." Guitarist Sonny Landreth and fiddler Michael Doucet contribute Cajun seasoning to this musical gumbo, while saxophonist David "Fathead" Newman and trombonist Fred Wesley provide stellar brass support. --Don McLeeseCustomer Reviews:

creole moon - it's just the Doctor his own self.......2004-12-22
p.s. If you are not familiar with the New Orleans patios, you may mistake the lyrics to "Monkey & Baboon" The Dr. does NOT use the "MF word"! The lyric is actually a "bad mutha fo ya"
I guess you have to live here.
The Doctor has the Cure.......2004-05-10
"You Swore" - An intro reminiscent of Stevie Wonder's "Superstition" guaranteed to get your toes tapping, and (as another reviewer put it perfectly) "backtalkin' babes" who "do what I wanna do".
"Food for Thought" - Fantastic wordplay, with bandmates David Barrard and Herman Ernest shouting "I like it!" and other approving noises. Second best song on the album.
"Holdin' Pattern" - Great violin solo by Michael Doucet of Beausoleil Cajun fame. He plays with such tenderness that he tugs at your emotions even when backed by a funky groove. This is the Doctor's advice to "you young sprouts".
"Bruha Bembe" - This features a Marie Leveau-like "conjure woman" who uses gris-gris to cast spells of love down on the bayoo, "all bayoo self". The backup girls sing a magical "yeah-yeah-yeah-yeah". This is spooky and loads of fun - best song on the album, maybe the very best the Doctor has ever recorded.
"Imitation of Love" - A straight-ahead blues ballad, co-written by Doc Pomus, in which a man confronts his woman with his unwillingness to continue the facade they have made of their relationship. Nicely and sincerely delivered.
"Creole Moon" - As the Good Doctor himself says in the CD notes, this is "window-foggin' night music made specifically for romantic manoeuvres"
"Monkey and Baboon" - If not for the repeated use of the MF word, this would be a great story for children (of all ages), featuring Brer Rabbit-type characters.
"Queen of Cold" - What a hot trumpet solo by Kevin Louis!
In addition to the first-class music, this CD features fantastic cover paintings of legendary N'Awlins voodoo characters Dr. John (the Good Doctor's namesake) and Marie Leveau (with rooster prepared for slaughter). It also includes a colorful and always interesting series of notes by the Doctor himself about the music and the local history that inspires it.

Great Collection of a Master.......2003-11-07
The interview at the end of the CD starts to meander, but I was surprised to hear Chenier say he invented Zydeco mostly to distiguish himself from other musicians, rather than some compelling need to create a new musical form.
There maybe a better collection out there, but this was good enough for me!
Fantastic Collection!!!.......2003-07-23
Overall, the album is outstanding: some of the best Zydeco music ever made, interspersed with top-notch blues and topped off with a fascinating interview, which, along with a previously unreleased version of "Zydeco Sont Pas Sale" make this interesting even to a long-time Clifton Chenier fan.

Amazon.com essential recording
Having won unanimous praise as a high-water mark in the zydeco and Cajun traditions, Bogalusa Boogie should have a place reserved for it in any collection of American music. It's got enough driving energy to hold its weight against any rock recording of the mid-1970s, when it was recorded in one day. It's got a trawler full of zydeco soul, too, riding a percussion wave built from the King of Zydeco's brother Cleveland Chenier's rub-board and Robert St. Julian's lag-time blues drumming. Leading the Red Hot Louisiana Band from behind his brawny, always-on accordion, Clifton Chenier charges through "Ride 'Em Cowboy" with devil-may-care abandon and then slinks into a chilled blues on "I May Be Wrong," riffing his accordion off the sax and guitar in splendid contrast. Chenier never sounded better on record than here, and for that fact alone, this is a must-have. --Andrew BartlettCustomer Reviews:

Chenier's happy, cool sound rocks!.......2007-05-22
You can't hate the accordian when its played right, and here, it is sterling.
This is killer blues and real zydeco: happy and sad mixing together like sweet and sour ribs. You CANNOT go wrong with this CD; put it on and feel better. HMOs should give it out to people; we all get the blues, but a well-worn bluesman celebrates our ability to appreciate that we can, really, feel lousey and love it. Great blues embraces our humanity and serves it up hot, like dancing in the street on the Day of the Dead. Chenier's sound is simple and magical stuff; and while you're unlikely to find it on the radio outside of Chicago's WXRT or satellite stations, here it is to buy and own for yourself, and support a genre that should never, ever end.

The second volume in Rhino's series of Cajun and zydeco music compilations, this collection includes 18 cuts by Terrance Simien & The Mallet Playboys, Nathan Abshire, The Balfa Brothers, Queen Ida, Clifton Chenier, Boozoo Chavis, Beausoleil, and 10 others. Stylistically, this disc covers everything from the Balfa Brothers worthy stab at the Cajun national anthem, "Jolie blond" and D.L. Menard's traditional "The Back Door" to Clifton Chenier's cover of Louis Jordan's joyous "Choo Choo Ch-Boogie" and Rockin' Dopsie's spirited reading of Professor Longhair's "Mardi Gras in New Orleans." More fun than definitive, this is another intelligently selected installment in a very worthy series. --Robert BairdCustomer Reviews:

Too Much Fun, C.J. Chenier's fourth album as a bandleader, is the best of the four, and more closely resembles his dad's (Clifton Chenier) records than anything else being released these days. In the liner notes, C.J. declares that he plays "real songs," not "this new type of zydeco ... where they just play one riff over and over and shout some words." This knock on Beau Jocque may be unfair (Beau Jocque does as much with one riff and a groove as James Brown once did), but it does signal C.J.'s devotion to his dad's song-based zydeco. C.J. co-wrote four of the songs, recycled three of his dad's and added such inspired choices as the calypso standard "Man Smart, Woman Smarter," Z.Z. Hill's blues standard "Down Home Blues" and Fred Koller's Nashville novelty number "Give Me Some of That." Guitarist Harry Hypolite is still on hand from Clifton's great band, and the younger musicians make the catchy hooks fit comfortably in the dancehall grooves. What really separates this recording from the zydeco pack, however, is C.J.'s singing. Not only can he nail a juicy melody, but he can bring out the story in the lyrics. He tells the woeful tale of all the "Bad Luck" he suffered until he met the right woman with a perfect blend of humor and sincerity, and he delivers the romantic ballad, "Richest Woman," with the raspy, gospel-soul fervor of a Solomon Burke. --Geoffrey HimesCustomer Reviews:
