5 out of 5 stars Herbie Hancock - Magic Windows.......2006-03-03

The disk was in perfect condition. The sound was clear and solid. Very, very good.

5 out of 5 stars Funkafied!.......2003-09-26

On "Magic Number","Everybody's Broke" and "Help Yourself"
Herbie delivers rhythm guitar-heavy synth-funk at it's finest
and on the brilliant "Twilight Clone"-a totally unique brand
of synthesized, funk electronica dance music comes to the fore.
"Tonights The Night" and "Satisfied With Love" are the same exact
song with a different melody and singer, but it's still geepy R&B
balladeering to me.But up the tempo and the album COOKS!!!

3 out of 5 stars The best of a bad 1977-82 crop..........2001-12-31

Yet another in a series of albums issued under Hancock's name that offers little evidence of his keyboard talents. Allowing for that annoyance, WINDOWS is the best pop-oriented HH album of this period. At least some real singers are brought in to replace Hancock's vocoder. The material is mostly off the production line, with a moderate level of inspiration at times (plus sign: the grooves are more funk, less disco). EVERYBODY'S BROKE tosses a relevant message into the derivative party atmosphere. THE TWILIGHT CLONE ends the album on a progressive note with a Talking Heads-like polyrhythmic layer of rhythm that anticipates the upcoming projects with Bill Laswell (ROCKIT, et al.). If only this album started there and proceeded accordingly. Still, if you have to have one CD in your collection covering HH's disco/funk/r&b era, I'd go for this one. Yet, if you can resist the temptation, pass on all of them and focus on Herbie's earlier and more recent efforts, where the talent and ambition that we love Herbie for are not misplaced and miscast.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing presentation of great music.......2002-08-04

I recently received this as a present but I was already familiar with many of these recordings, having owned the complete versions of the works presented. Yes, these are great recordings but if you settle for this compilation you will be missing out big time on great music. I own Fennell's recording on the Holst suite--while the March from the suite is very good, you will miss out on the beautiful 'Song Without Words' and the 'Fantasia on the Dargason,' which are the seond and fourth movements of the suite, respectively. If you get the original CD from which this movement was taken you will be able to enjoy the wonderful playing of members of the Cleveland Orchsestra as they play Holst's First suite and a wonderful rendition of Handel's Fireworks Music.

Maazel's Pictures at an Exhibition is excellnt, precise with excellent blends and fantastic orchestral playing, but you can hardly feel the power of the Great Gate of Kiev without the promenades and pictures that preceed it--you loose the whole sense of climax and fulfillment following the half hour of difficult music that preceeds the Great Gate. Beethoven's Emperor concerto is top-notch music but I think you might rather hear the second movement between the first and third movements which are full of powerful orchestral playing and keyboard virtuosity. Robert Spano's recording of Scheherazade that was released just a few months ago is brilliant. It's his first recording with the Atlanta Symphony and it's great--and you should own the complete thing which comes on a CD with the beuatiful Russian Easter Overture.

Spend some time looking for these complete recordings and you will be rewarded. What makes the compilation even worse is that in many cases the CD does not even present a full movement but just a part of a movement.

As I said, I own many of these individual recordings and they are all great: Telarc captures the best musicians at their best. Having two or three CDs from which these excerpts were taken is much better than owning this compilation. I highly recommend Fennell's Holst (Telarc - #80038), Maazel's Pictures (Telarc - #80042), and Spano's Scheherazade (Telarc - #80568), instead of this disc. Rachmaninoff's Second Sonata and Sibelius' Second Symphony are great but these are not my preferred recordings (find Van Cliburn's Rachmaninoff and Maazel's Sibelius), and you can do better by swapping some other performers as well.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Moravian songs, via Janacek, Godar, Bittova and Skampa.......2006-05-09

This is a unique recording of Janacek's transcriptions of Moravian folk songs. Originally for piano and voice, they have been transcribed by Slovak composer Vladimir Godar for string quartet and (occasionally) three-voice male chorus. Here they are performed by renowned Czech singer and violinist Iva Bittova, accompanied by the Skampa Quartet and chorus. The effect is not so much of classical liede, but of authentic eastern European "popular" songs - the sonority of the string quartet adds to this in no small part. Janacek would be proud.

2 out of 5 stars Skampa Quartet is great - the singer... yikes.......2005-07-28

I honestly did not know what I was getting myself into when I bought this CD. I love Janacek, I love folk songs... how could I go wrong? Iva Bittova! I was concerned that she would have a 50yr old woobly voice, but instead what exists is a thin VERY nasal tone... perhaps she should be singing traditional Bulgarian music! The voice is expressive, just ugly.
The recording quality is not very good, either. On many of the tracks, Iva seems to be muffled and in the background of the recording.
Really - dont waste your time and money, unless you really would just like to have a recording of over 50 Janacek songs.
