Product Description
Recorded In 1980, this album features famous sidemen such as: Carlos Santana (guitar), Ray Parker Jr. (guitar), Alphonse Mouzon (drums and keyboards) and Sheila Escovedo (percussion). Nice, light fusion effort that can be viewed as a fore-father to today's acid jazz.

The 2 CD Set is a Better Bargain If you Count the Songs Correctly.......2006-07-15
I just wanted to correct the reviewer "Tanya" who stated that the 2 CD Platinum Edition only contained 20 songs versus the 18 on this particular edition. The set with 2 CD's is a GREAT value because it includes 32 songs, not 20!!!! It helps to count the entire song list when comparing the CD's.
The 2-CD Edition includes the following songs that are not included on the edition with only 18 songs:
1. Angel Song - Great White
2. Don't Close Your Eyes - Kix
3. Fly High Michelle - Enuff Znuff
4. Honestly - Stryper
5. House Of Pain - Faster Pussycat
6. If You Needed Somebody - Bad Company
7. I'll Never Let You Go - Steelheart
8. I'll See You In My Dreams - Giant
9. Love Is On The Way - Saigon Kick
10. Miles Away - Winger
11. Only Time Will Tell - Nelson
12. The Flame - Cheap Trick
13. When I See You Smile - Bad English
14. When I'm With You - Sheriff
You can figure that each of these songs would cost $0.99 if purchased individually through a service such as iTunes, so I recommend paying the extra money for the 2 CD edition versus purchasing this CD with only 18 songs. This is the best collection of power ballads on the market.
Doesn't seem to be what the commercial promised.......2006-03-10
I imagine that this disk has all the songs advertised on TV, but somehow I remember being a lot more excited about it while watching the commercial than I was when I got the CD. There are a few true gems on here though- perhaps those are the only songs they played in the commercial. Something everyone should know: the 2-cd edition costs twice as much, but only has 20 songs compared to 18 songs on this disc. This disc lacks 3 of the songs that the other set has, but has an additional song not included in the 2-cd set.
No one has put these power ballads in one collection like this! Excellent! .......2006-02-19
No one has ever put these power ballads together like this on one single CD! Although there is a 34-song collection of this CD, the 18 chosen for this collection were pretty well chosen. But this was a strong subgenre from 1987 to 1991, when there were an increasing number of power ballads by heavy metal bands becoming hits. It seemed common for the ballads to peak at No.1 or 2, so very high, while their rockers finished lower at No. 6, 7, 8 or 10. Maybe some people were more comfortable with their ballads than the layers of loud guitars blasting over them. They surprisingly balanced well with the R&B ballads and pop dance hits back then. Most of these songs I've seen on other compilations, but this is the first one to include Carrie's Europe and Kiss' underrated Forever. This one is more balanced, from the acoustic numbers of Extreme, Tesla, Poison and Mr. Big, to the loud guitars of High Enough, I Remember You to even the bluesy Cinderella ballad which I still love. I still love Whitesnake's adventurous Is This Love. It's even message driven, even in Scorpions' Wind Of Change. And there's something about the quiet mood of Queensryche's Silent Ludicity that still is haunting today. Another favorite I like here is Kix' Don't Close Your Eyes, which avoids the typical formulaic approach of the other power ballad hits and has a strong musical performance all throughout. This is a dynamic collection to recall this solid music period in popular music.

New Jersey white-trash visionary and Monster Magnet frontman Dave Wyndorf spent most of the '80s and '90s dropping acid, popping pills, inhaling pungent weed, and churning out sludgy, drug-induced paeans to hedonistic abandon. And when he finally came down from his cosmic cloud, he realized the rest of the world was as messed up as he was. Addiction loomed everywhere--for power, money, and sex--and all Wyndorf could do was take out his notepad and marvel at the chaos. Monster Magnet's fourth album is a seething document of decay, corruption, and consumerism. "When you get tired of their crap, baby / Move over here and maybe buy some of mine," he shouts on the title track, while crashing power chords, throbbing bass, and tumbling drum fills resonate around him. Musically, Powertrip is less rambling and psychedelic than the group's past albums, owing as much to such confrontational garage rockers as the Stooges and Blue Cheer as to Black Sabbath. It's also more experimental. "Crop Circle" roars with blowtorch guitars and a circular groove; "19 Witches" and "Your Lies Become You" shiver with twanging surf-punk guitars; and "Space Lord" buzzes like a swarm of angry wasps. A powerful trip for sure, or as Wyndorf says in "Bummer," "If you want to spank your demons and make them pay. Baby I'm your man of the hour." --Jon Wiederhorn
Customer Reviews:
One of the best heavy music records of the 90s........2007-05-21
Admit it, when you first heard the opening, chugging riffs of "Spacelord" your socks were rocked off. Mine were, too. I think this was my favorite cd of my junior and senior year of high school. Every song is a highlight, but "Crop Circle", "Powertrip", "Spacelord", "Bummer", "See You In Hell" and "Third Eye Landslide" are my favs.
You will not find balls-to-the-wall sleaze metal like this anywhere else. This is the epitome of that style and Dave Wyndorf is one of the last true rock-stars. Check out all their other stuff, too. They have never struck out when releasing an album.
Raw energy.......2007-05-18
This is the album to listen to. If you liked the first few tracks from Dopes to Infinity, then this is for you. From the first track, this album does not let up. There are so many good tracks, it is hard to choose a favorite. I especially like "See you in Hell" because of the groovy, psychedelic vibe it has going. I've always been a fan of the heavy, in your face tracks and this cd is filled with them. This is by far my favorite MM album.
ROCKIN' OUT.......2006-07-26
For how cheap you can obtain "Powertrip" for, you should take full advantage. This is their most mainstream record, but also rocks the most. By "rocks" of course, that means it doesn't follow previous monster magnet material as much, but it's a marvelously progressive record. Magnet evolves like every other band, but opposed to most other bands, Dave wyndorf's naturally amazing song writing far excedes the standard to most evolving bands. "Powertrip" is Monster Magnet's debut, to signify breaking out of the underground, but throughout their career sustain and posess that same great energy they've harnessed, and like a fine wine, has only gotten better with time.
"The Gods told me to relax...".......2005-09-16
YES! This is the stuff, the righteous 'n' raucous scalding stoner rock with brains and a heart and a sense of humor. So many bands profess to purvey it but almost none deliver the goods except Brother Wyndorf & Co.
Only two questions: Why did the Magnet not become mammoth stars? And how did the far less interesting Queens of the Stone Age get so dadblamed big?
Verily, these are eternal mysteries.
"I'm never gonna work another day in my life/The Gods told me to relax, they said I'm gonna get fixed up right."
Monstrous........2005-07-05
You can pretty much just look at the cover of this album and know it's gonna be good. Anybody who's drawn to the Magnet (no pun intended), should totally dig this. It's their typical psychedelic-stoner-metal. I hesitate to say "Powertrip" is as good as "Dopes", but it's roughly as rockin'. "Crop Circle" and the title track kick this off in grand style, and it doesn't let up much after. "Space Lord" of course is the bomb, and drops like one. If looking for your first Monster Magnet disc, this is a good pick. Fans of The Atomic Bitchwax, Soundgarden, and QOTSA enjoy.

Customer Reviews:
All the Cheese.......2007-03-30
This album epitomizes the cheese apparent in heavy metal. After being the rebellion soundtrack of choice in the 80s, it was overtaken by rap, whose top stars were criminal gangsters. This album has all the songs that made metal so great back in the day, only to lose their sense of humor later on as it's big stars turned into old men. Why would a bunch of jocks turn this into a popularity game? To some one like me who drinks every day, I love most of these songs, but where's the humor?
A great running CD.......2006-06-27
This CD is good to put into your Walkman and take a long run with.
There's not much to say except that the CD is all around good owing to a strong selection of songs. Well worth the purchase price and something that you'll listen to often over the years (as I have).

R.E.M. pushed the jangle out of the picture with Monster, replacing it with reverberating snaps, crackles, and pops. An album that wraps itself to '70s glam finery while reaching out to the flannel-clad post-Nirvana throngs, it largely succeeds at demonstrating that these Georgians still know how to rock. The MTV fave "What's the Frequency, Kenneth?" kicks things off on a high note as Peter Buck's distorted power chords set the tone for the 12-song set. "Strange Currencies" may be alarmingly reminiscent of the Automatic for the People hit "Everybody Hurts," but it's actually the superior song. "Let Me In" is a heavily distorted nod to the fallen Kurt Cobain. While Monster is far from R.E.M.'s most consistent effort, it stands as a ragged and risky respite from safe and sound alterna-rock. --Steven Stolder
Customer Reviews:
Even for the ever-changing Stipe and crew, this is a streeeetch..........2007-07-05
Widely derided R.E.M. album seems to find them trying to shape their sound towards grunge and glam by increasing the distortion and then shining it to a clean sounding reverb. While it's not quite the disaster that some claim, this certainly isn't essential R.E.M.
The frequently rotated MTV hit, "What's the Frequency, Kenneth?" is good enough, I suppose, but after the recent "Losing My Religion" and "Man on the Moon," it certainly isn't a good enough tentpole to warrant interest in the rest of this weird little creation. I realize that the band likes to take chances and try new sounds for each album, but no sane person could even recognize the 80s form of R.E.M. in "King of Comedy."
At times, it nears the same sort of unexpected success that U2 found when they made Pop (not the band we all knew and liked, but still something different and pretty good), but the whole thing is really just a big mess. In the shuffle, though, there's treasure to be made of the trash. "Tongue" and "Bang and Blame" are especially warped little winners, and make up for the disasters that are "Circus Envy" and the aforementioned "King." Also, doesn't "Strange Currencies" have almost the exact same beat as "Everybody Hurts"?
Best cuts: "Bang and Blame," "Tongue," "What's the Frequency, Kenneth?" "I Don't Sleep, I Dream," "Crush With Eyeliner," "Let Me In," "Star 69"
REM CD.......2007-04-11
CD arrived on time and the CD itself is in excellent conditon . The price was good BUT the CD case was damaged .
Lots of Distortion, Not Much Music.......2007-03-21
I bought everything they did from Murmur up to AFTP. When I heard Monster, I liked WTFK, but then there was nothing tuneful after that. If you liked grunge, this is great, but if you like good tunes, then you want the earlier REM albums.
A great record by any other band..except for purists.......2007-01-26
This record is what sets REM apart from all the other American guitar based alternative rock bands. It is a significant departure from Out of Time and Automatic for the People, two very successful and outstanding records, that were folksy and rustic, with undistorted instruments and brilliant arrangements and sound. It is also a significant departure from the REM sound of the 1980's, from the atmospheric, hypnotic, frenetic, jangly guitar and bass lines, and the light, hesitant mumbles of Michael Stipe and the harmony of Mike Mills of the Chronictown-Murmur-Reckoning era, to the arena rock stylings of Document and Green.
This record is all about rocking out with driving beats and catchy hooks. The jangle is mostly gone as Peter Buck goes for heavy distortion, full major key power chords, wah wah/fuzz box effects. What isn't missing is the great songwriting, the unique contributions of each of the musicians that make REM what it is, and the confident and clever Michael Stipe, who doesn't have to scream to lead a band through a rock record.
The standout songs to me are:
What's the Frequency Kenneth,
Crush with Eyeliner,
King of Comedy,(my favorite on the CD. I know the REM fans tend to dismiss this one, but it is brilliant glam rock with nice backing vocals, a catchy beat and even catchier guitar. It is great pop music),
Bang and Blame,
I Don't Sleep I Dream,
Circus Envy.
But there isn't a bad song on this CD, so it is well worth the money. Get Monster. It belongs with Chronictown, Murmur, Reckoning, Document, Green, Out of Time and Automatic for the People as among the essential REM records to own.
Evokes memories of simpler rock.......2007-01-15
Granted, many REM fans adhere to the notion that only 80's REM is good REM. To be clear, REM was arguably the BEST band of the 80's. But Monster was ambitious. It sounded loud, raucous, and was fun. The early 90's were about having heavy power chords dominate. REM merely explored and did it better than most. In my hear of hearts, REM will always be "Fall on Me" REM but I'll blast "What's the Frequency Kenneth with as much aplomb.

Yay!.......2007-05-06
A true test to how good an album is: how many times can u listen to it in a row and still discover something new with each listen. By the 5th spin i'm hooked. Truly a bunch of guys to celebrate. Off-key, puzzling, beautiful tapestry of funk, rock and piano. When the piano kicks in on 'cough coughing' i had butterflies in my chest. I can't wait to hear their other albums.
I am blown away........2007-04-12
Wow. This band is truly refreshing. They are a rainbow paisley oasis in a desert of brown Dockers. I hope they stick around for a long time.
Menomena's First Album.......2005-10-12
First of all, "I Am the Fun Blame Monster" is an awesome album title because it is an anagram of "Menomena's First Album"...who does that?! Regardless of their inventive album title, Menomena's sound is also wildly creative. The thought and experimentation that went into this album is incredible and I hope everyone gets to experience the wonder of the monster...plus, the album presentation is something to be proud of and, best of all, fun to play with. I bought the album for my boyfriend and was very tempted to keep it for myself ;)
Glad I found this band.......2005-03-13
I'm almost ashamed to say that I've just recently started listening to this band, even though they hail from my city, good old gritty Portland, OR. Though I really can't comment on the mathematics and computer programming of this music (though somehow that impresses me in a geeky kind of way), I can tell you in my humble opinion, that this album is mature and sophisticated, yet not at all inaccessible. I'm thoroughly impressed with their crashing orchestral sound... and equally blown away by the fact that they totally rock!!
As it's been said before, there is this sort of low-fi Radiohead quality to their stuff, but I hestitate labeling or associating Menomena too closely with them. After listening to this album with complete abandon, I feel like I've been through an Experience. I'm spent, but thoroughly invigorated and hopeful.
"Try and stop us now!".......2005-01-11
This little Fun-Blame Monster sure came outta nowhere, didn't it? I mean, we have pitchfork throwing up a "featured review" one moment, followed by a chorus of indie kids and online mags screaming "hell ya!" and then it's forgotten in time for the year-end best-of lists... It came and went so fast that I'd mostly forgotten about it until I randomly came upon a used copy at the local record shop. The crude dragon drawing on the front insisted that I give it a sample listen, and, rolling my eyes, I grudgingly obliged. Now about this local record store, I have to give them credit that they even have listening stations for the used c.d.s. Still, they make it pretty clear that they don't want you there too long by making it very uncomfortable- you stand in a little booth with nothing to lean on or sit on. I wasn't planning on being there too long- only 30 secs a song, 9 songs, a quick little five minutes, right? I pressed play...and stood there for the whole 45 minute runtime. Man, it blew me away.
The first thing that sucks you in is the drumming. It pummels you with complex, danceable, near-hip-hop beats- not unlike those from the Flaming Lips Soft Bulletin. And then, the melodies come in, weave a tapestry in your head, and keep you eagerly anticipating each new moment. Piano, Saxophone, Keyboards and bass flow together in most unexpected and blissful ways. I can't remember when I last heard such bewilderingly ornate melodies- those perfect tunes that never repeat a single time more than they have to, and that reward every time you listen but are never to obtuse to leave your head.
Each song exemplifies an unique approach, but it's a wonderfully sequenced album with many of the pieces flowing into each other. Really, the only weak link are the lyrics, which are pleasant but certainly not standout. But this is POP music of the highest order. The whole stands together as an ode to the clarity that comes out of loneliness- those 4 am moments when you stare out your window, perfectly content to be perfectly alone.
Yup, it was "left-field" alright, so left-field it seems it's already been forgotten. That's a real shame- this is, without a doubt, one of the most brilliant pop records in recent years. Grab it while you can.

This extremely 80s collection includes all the best new wave hits of the decade. If you're looking for a fun, party CD, then this is also a good one! From Duran Duran's irresistible, fun ''Hungry Like the Wolf'' to Mr. Mister's heartthrobing ''Broken Wings'' to Culture Club sound alikes Spandau Ballet's ''True'' to Toni Basil's cheerleading hit, (Oh Mickey you're so fine! You're so fine, you blow my mind! Hey Mickey!) ''Mickey,'' this CD is a great one to your 80s collection.
A good buy.......2002-01-04
While it's definately not the best compilation out there, some of the lesser used songs from the 80's appear here. This is not one to buy for the famous names, but more for the one hit wonders... songs like "true" and "broken wings" make it a good easy listening CD. A more appropriate title would be light sounds from the 80's... if not for the few upbeat classics.

We should be sick of Ralph Covert--the lone inhabitant of Ralph's World--by now. In only five years, he's put out six discs' worth of mostly the same hoot-worthy, hand-clappy, good-time, anytime, play-it-loud stuff. But here's the thing: Ralph never gets it wrong. As kids' musicians go, he's as close to the Beatles as they get, both in terms of sound and sheer brilliance. Which makes it almost tedious to report that Green Gorilla, Monster & Me is, within its genre, a minor masterpiece. "Monster," a monster of a party song about an adopted mutt who's both "the softest snuggler on the couch" and "the wettest kisser on the mouth," manages to sketch out Ralph's mojo in the span of three minutes; "I Don't Wanna" reinforces it by way of a whip-smart lesson in Punk 101; and "Old Red Number 7" brings it home with a classic, thoughtfully sung slice of nostalgia. As redundant as it is to spread the word that Ralph rules, then, he leaves us little choice--parents of preschoolers from Shreveport to Saskatchewan will never be so eager to welcome a green gorilla into their play basements. --Tammy La Gorce

Pure excellence.......2007-07-01
(Warning, this review is a template for all my Ralph's World reviews, but strewn throughout are specific comments pertaing to this specific album)
Ralph's World is music performed by an adult, but in the voice of a child. Of course, this is the goal for all children's artists, but sadly, much of what is on the market is simplistic and condescending. Ralph's World is childlike through and through. His music looks at the world from a child's perspective, and delivers in songs both children and adults find so appealing. This is one of those rare artists who would be enjoyed by most generations if he were to, say, perform in a park or community theater. Kids, adults, even grandparents would get lost in the feel good music world of wonder, excitement, imagination, and goofiness children live in (and need). We played this album, along with happy Lemons and Kid Astro at a b-day party, and the adults had no problems listening to the discs all day.
I initially tried to compose a list of songs my two sons enjoyed the most, but it turns out they like just about every one. But unlike clothes, books and toys they will outgrow, and do not interest adults, this album is simply good music even for adults. More than once I found myself listening to this music (and hitting replay after songs like Old #7, and River Flow) after the kids have long left the car or room.
But don't get me wrong: this album is deservedly 100% for children. Our children deserve good songs, positive and realistic themes, and good musicianship. They get it all here, and we get to enjoy some of the benefits as well. I'm sure my boys will "outgrow" this album some time, but I know this CD will remain in my collection. And I know I can make a greatest hits compilation strictly for myself using songs from this and other albums, filling the CD to its 80 minute capacity.
Awesome!.......2007-04-11
For parents searching for a good way to introduce great music to their children, without worrying about content being unacceptable, this CD is amazing. We are music aficionados and wanted to introduce our 2-year old daughter to rock and roll without exposing her to mature themes. Green Gorilla, Monster & Me is perfect for that!
Fun Music CD for everyone.......2007-03-08
Ralph World CD's are great - we own almost all of them. He is very talented and his music appeals to all ages, including adults. It's fun and we all find ourselves singing the songs all day.
Love Ralph!.......2007-03-03
I have enjoyed listening to Ralph Covert's wonderful songs. When we turn it on for our 1 yr. old he immediately starts bouncing up and down. He loves listening to Ralph!
Great fun for all!.......2006-11-06
We love this CD, and it's recently released brother, Welcome to Ralph's World. Our 2.5 year old requests this CD in the car every time we get in! We can actually use it as a way to get him moving if we are in a hurry! The songs are all light hearted and silly enough to keep a kid involved, but can even captivate the imagination of the grown-ups in the car! My son and I sing all the songs together, and my husband and I will even hear the tunes from the monitor as he sings himself to sleep at night, he loves them that much. Our son is a huge music lover, so this was a great match!

From Here To The Dark Side Of The Moon.......2007-07-08
This largely-overlooked monsterpiece from 1969 has one especially-intriguing track, "From Here To There Eventually". In it I can hear a condensed mini-Rock Opera which sounds like a pre-cursor to Pink Floyd's 1973 masterwork "Dark Side Of The Moon". The haunting end passage contains a chillingly-beautiful female vocal reminiscent of "The Great Gig In The Sky", there are synthesized sounds like the droning of a downward-spiraling airplane, and an overall flavor which somehow encapsulates the entire feel of the Floyd gem. Add this to your collection and bask in some great Rock.
The More Things Change, The More They Stay The Same!.......2007-06-08
I have to say that this "Album" by John Kay and his wolves really hit the target dead on when it first came out - and it still apparently does the same today. Of course, the title song, "Monster" is the best of the lot on the album - both musically and lyric-wise. In fact, you can listen to the lyrics that were written nearly 40 years ago and realize that the more things change, the more they stay the same!
BTW, there's lots of snaky guitar work being performed on this album - their lead was the quintessinal rock guitarist of the 60's - and you could say the 70's as well.
Too bad they are still not around with the same members as then - they were a very compatible group of musicians.
Real Rock.......2007-03-21
Do you think now " musicians" knows how to play rock? Listen to Steppenwolf and learn.

that Steppenwolf-Monster LP has songs called Fag, Monster and Suicide, has the best cover art ever and it still totally sucks.

Those song titles (Steppenwolf) are incredible beyond belief.

But she just patiently smiled and then bore them a child.......2006-06-11
This is quite simply another classic in a long line of classic Steppenwolf albums. The track 'a) Monster b) Suicide c) America' is perhaps their most ambitious recording, and it succeeds on all levels, becoming an anthem of America in a way, that conjures up associations to Walt Whitman and others. The first part, 'Monster', is just brilliant music with a lyric, that shows Steppenwolf as more poetic, than they usually are. 'Suicide' is darker, terrifying, and delivered full of delicious hard guitar. And then comes the angelic ending of 'America', which manages to be overblown, without this being anything but another boost to its greatness.
'Draft Resister' follows in the vein of the first track's greatness. It is dark, gloomy hard rock, notable for the same abundance of great melodies, that was shown on the first track (one feels, that these two first songs possess magic enough to fill a whole album with moderate songs, had that been necessary, but instead it's just these two, overflowing with melody and hard rock!)
'Power Play' is almost as strong as 'Draft Resister', that is, quality doesn't fall, but neither does it rise. All what was said of good things about 'Draft Resister', however, can also be said about 'Power Play'.
'Move Over' is just magnificent, with its formidable start and right-between-psychedelia-and-disco sounds (meant in a good way). Ought to have joined 'Born To Be Wild' and 'Magic Carpet Ride' in the US Top 3.
'Fag' is far less spectacular than the other songs, not in itself a bad song, just not as delightfully imbued with the overflowing exuberance of the earlier tracks. The least interesting track, it is still good enough, and it doesn't spoil any of the experience. If you listen to the album from beginning to end, it's not like you get bored here and stop the album, it is just not a highlight like the others.
'What Would You Do (If I Did That To You)' is quite simply an awesome rock song, an underrated Steppenwolf-gem, as dark & gloomy as 'Draft Resister', and at the same time as light as 'Move Over'. All these traits are duplicated in the last song, 'From Here To There Eventually', which is almost as good, a bit slower and more epic.
All in all, this is an outstanding album. It gets 4 stars out of 5, because the melancholia of the mood doesn't change enough through the album, making it somewhat depressive to listen to several times. It's not like I don't love dark albums, but, like the case of Joy Division's outings, they can just become too much, and I prefer things like Suede or David Bowie, where more upbeat tracks rescue you now and then, before you plunge even deeper into the dark night of the soul. 'Monster' has more of these upbeat tracks, than for example Joy Division, but the still retain the feeling of emptiness, which fills the entire album (it's on purpose, Steppenwolf has done a masterful job capturing this feeling). But where Bowie's songs are like dark worlds, this is a dark void, and though it is just as brilliant, it is harder to listen to....
Ok, I'll change it to 5 stars, one can't blame them for making an album that captures emptiness... that doesn't make the art less magical...

This cd was great and the one my husband wanted. The songs are very enjoyable.
Monster Ballads Volume 2.......2006-03-17
Great songs from the the 80's big hair period. Love most all of them!!!!
This is the better album of that series.......2004-11-07
I still like to mention this album in conversations, because some of today's songs, even country band Lonestar's power ballads like Amazed, borrow from this rock album. I like the choices of songs from the heavy metal bands here. But the writing is very good, the musical arrangements are dynamite and there's a loudness to the power ballads that can rival their heavy rockers! Firehouse, L A Guns, Poison and some others have some very dynamite songs here. This is the much better album of that series, versus the more commercial sheen of the first.
No Foreigner = 4 stars.......2002-12-21
I agree, both of these CDs are great collaborations...however, they forgot the greatest love ballad of all time: I Wanna Know What Love Is - By Foreigner. How could they turn that song away from this collection. That song would give this album 5 stars. Anyway, monster snares and big hair forever

One of the true characters of L.A.'s first hardcore wave, Social D's frontman Mike Ness seemingly fancied himself a boot-boy Johnny Cash at the time of this 1983 release. The tales he spun--many of which were later borne out by stints in jail and drug treatment--blurred the line between American anti-hero and punk no-goodnik, between Cash and the Clash. And, unlike a lot of their Angeleno brethren, Ness and axeman Dennis Danell really knew how to write a song. Admittedly, this incarnation of the band is decidedly less accessible than the current edition. And while they may not be as anthemically inspiring as the more earnest work found on, say, Prison Bound, snotty proclamations like the title track and "It Wasn't a Pretty Picture" stomp along with authority to spare. --David Sprague

Where It All Began..........2007-03-30
This is where it all began. Many of the so called "punk rock" bands of today would do well to go back and listen to this album. This is Social Distortions contribution to the first wave of Southern California punk. It sounds as good today as it did in the 1980's.
However, those who are only familiar with their radio hits such as "Ball & Chain", "Ring of Fire", and "When The Angels Sing" might be somewhat put off by this album. There can be no doubt that this is a raw, in your face, punk rock classic.
While they may have released more fully realized and better albums later in their career, this album is essential to anyone who loves this band. The highlights on the album include...
-Another State of Mind
-Telling Them
-Hour of Darkness
-Mommy's Little Monster
Monster's Ball.......2007-01-06
Social Distortion is considered a classic band. For some, though, there is little to crow about. Those people are mistaken. Social Distortion has always been a band worth listening to, even on its weaker releases. This one isn't weak, but it isn't the best, either.
I've got this on clear vinyl from a guy in Italy, so I consider it a prized possession, but I don't listen to it as much as I do the other albums. Why? I don't know, but it doesn't grab me the way I feel a Social Distortion album should. I want to feel like moving, like punching someone, like lamenting, like crying in a beer, or just driving off a cliff real fast. I don't get that with this one, but it still beats anything from Blink-182.
A Classic Punk Record!.......2005-10-17
I grew up on this album as well as Social D's "Mainliner:wreckage from the past" and let me tell you that after 10+ years of listening they have lost absolutely none of their power! I am not a fan of much social D after the early punk years. When mike ness lost the ability to sing reasonably and they became a weird rockabilly/country from the heart type band I said goodbye. If you enjoy bands like Black Flag,Circle Jerks,T.S.O.L. and others from that time period and cali location than you will certainly dig every second of this. The only problem I really ever had with Mommy's Little Monster was that it's only 9 songs long and that the album versions of All The Answers and Moral Threat don't live up to the Earlier ones (which appear on "mainliner"). Do yourself a favor and pick both up right now!
best punk rock album ever.......2005-05-16
I fell in love w/ Mike Ness and Social D in the 80s. They toured constantly, it seemed like they came to the Cameo Theatre in Miami Beach (and when that shut down, 1235) at least 2X a year. Best energy at those shows, everyone screaming our lungs out to songs that told our stories. If you don't get amped listening to this album, you should really stick to emo-core fluffy music, and quit calling yourself a punk rocker.
The new stuff is just as good, but is more of a showcase for Mike Ness' phenomenal songwriting ability. My favorite band in the whole wide world. God bless Social D, they have fed my spirit for 20 years.
Social D at their best.......2005-05-16
Mommy's little monster is in my opinion, Social Distortion's greatest sound. I'm in high school and really enjoy punk music, So this CD's raw enerfy and blaring guitars is a good sound. Don't let this discourage you not to buy other CD's by them though, Because later Social Distortion isalso great, just a different, more mature sound.
