Three of the biggest instrumental pop hits ever recorded were by trumpeters Hugh Masekela, Herb Alpert, and Chuck Mangione. Botti's fourth album comes equipped with more than enough catchy and light melodies to compete with that legacy, but it will probably be "All Would Envy," one of the two vocal tunes on Night Sessions, that will help this disc dent radio and sales charts. It's a song given an irresistible Brazilian lilt by its composer, Sting, who Botti has toured with, and sung hauntingly by Shawn Colvin. Like those aforementioned horn players, Botti does put an emphasis on rhythm on upbeat groove tunes like "Miami Overnight," "Streets Ahead," and especially "Blue Horizon," which has more than a hint of Europe's drum & bass sound, and features killer keyboard work by Billy Childs and album producer Kipper. But it's the Alpert-influenced "Through an Open Window," with its rock guitars and slick melody line that many may consider the hottest track. Most of the other tracks consist of Botti's crisp clear tone cutting through the kind of atmospheric, heavily padded keyboard music that has gotten him on smooth-jazz radio and Hollywood soundtracks. --Mark Ruffin

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding.......2007-05-15

The warm and sensual melodic tones of this cd reveal this outstanding artist as a soulful natural, expressing his passion for his instrument and the music of life in terms we all can appreciate. Outstanding !!!

5 out of 5 stars The ultimate mood disc.......2007-04-01

Chris is a trumpet master and one who really knows how to create a mood in his music. He gets it. He knows how to put his emotion into it so that it's transferred to the listener. The only other trumpeter that puts his soul into his music and that you can hear through a mute (which I think is difficult to do) is Miles Davis. The musicianship is tremendous and his band really adds to his minimalistic playing...less is more. I'm always picking up new licks from Chris and his band in this disc bacause his music has a number of layers if you're listening for them! This is the 1st disc of his I owned and it's one I'll never get tired of it.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2006-12-29

We have alot of music by Chris Botti, but this CD is, by far, my personal favorite. It is so expressive and emotional. Just absolutely beautiful.

5 out of 5 stars Brought me inspiration.......2006-07-22

This album is fantastic. It is my "muse" music. Whenever I need inspiration I play it and it helps. "Streets Ahead" does the trick. : )

4 out of 5 stars Chris Botti "Night Sessions".......2006-07-05

Chris is a talented musician and this CD shows his talents well.
It is mellow and pleasing to hear. I am enjoying it very much

    Album Description

His name and face might not grace many album covers, but Cornell Dupree's guitar playing has touched millions of people. The funky two-note string pop at the beginning of Aretha Franklin's "Respect," the serene lead and refrain on King Curtis' "Soul Serenade," even the rhythmic underpinnings on Mariah Carey's Emotions album -- they're all the work of Dupree. And that's just the tip of the iceberg. In a remarkable career now entering its fifth decade, Dupree has played on an estimated 2,000-plus albums, and worked with a staggering list of artists that includes James Brown, Miles Davis, Ray Charles, Donny Hathaway, Elvin Jones, B.B. King, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Paul Simon and Barbra Streisand. Also known by guitar fans around the world for his work with the instrumental funk combos Stuff and the Gadd Gang - his unique, funky fat-back rhythm and blues meets jazz style is in a class of its own. This CD release of the rare late 70's sessions he did for the short lived! Versatile label will be reason to rejoice for Cornell's fans and marks the first official CD release of this classic material.

Recorded in Los Angeles as a tribute to the late pioneering Cuban American DJ Emilio Vandenedes, the Caravana Cubana crew invites comparisons with Ry Cooder's Buena Vista Social Club franchise insofar as it brings together such Cuban musical veterans as pianist Jesus "Chucho" Valdés and 83-year-old singer Pio Leyva with young upstarts like trombonist Jimmy Bosch and conguero Miguel Anga Diaz. But it's a more lively project than the suavely dignified BVSC records thanks mainly to a ferocious percussion section that maintains a sizzling flame under material ranging from traditional Santeria ceremonial music to the head-spinning drumming of "Una Rumba con Dos Tres" to a handful of jazzier jams kicked off by former members of Dizzy Gillespie's legendary 1940s Latin jazz band. --Richard Gehr

      Album Description

A joyous reunion of Cuba's best known musicians with their friends in the United States. Jesus "Chucho" Valdes, Bamboleo, Miguel Anga Diaz, Orlando "Maraca" Valle, and the 83 year-old Pio Leiva join with LA-based Jose Caridad "Perico" Hernandez (one of Cuba' s greatest musicians according to Chucho Valdes), Lazaro Galarraga, Carlos Del Puerto, Jr., Francisco Aguabella, and others. An added bonus is the presence of Raul Travieso Rodriguez, brother of the Cuban music legend, Arsenio Rodriguez. This is Raul's first recording since his brother's death in the early 1970's. These are original recordings throughout the summer of 1998.

      4 out of 5 stars A beginner..........2000-12-05

I write this review from the perspective of an extreme novice of the genre. I actually listened to this CD at a Borders and was absolutely taken in (especially by the infectious beat and tempo of the first track). I had been inspired to check it out by the popularity of Buena Vista Social Club and actually found myself enjoying this CD more. At the most basic level, I enjoy the range of songs on this album and the incredible musicianship. Going beyond this, it seemed to me to be a good introduction (in part because of the range of songs but also because of the range of musicians) and I feel like I have already learned a lot. I cannot comment, obviously, in reference to other artists or albums in this genre, but I can assert unequivocally how much I ENJOY this album. It has worn very well and I suspect will give me a great deal of upbeat listening pleasure for a long time to come.

4 out of 5 stars Opening the Doors to Cuba................2000-01-29

While not as joyous and buoyant as "A Toda Cuba Le Gusta," this album is a good cross-section of Cuban and Afro-Cuban rhythms. Outstanding vocals by the legendary Pio Leyva (Leiva, here)and Perico Hernandez, and great percussion (to be expected). Chucho Valdes' piano solo on "Chuco Carabali" is an eclectic mix of great jazz and soulful Cubanismo. The album isn't the best of the genre, but five or six of the eight tracks are still far above average. Surely worth your time!

5 out of 5 stars Explosive Blend of Afro-Cuban Roots of Salsa.......1999-07-29

After hearing this album I was amazed at the craftmanship of these Cuban Masters. They definately took me on a 'caravana' journey of the sounds of Cuba. The inspirations of vocalist Lázaro Galarraga and the bass legend Al McKibbon blew the roof off of my house with their sounds. If you love Buena Vista Social Club you will not go wrong with this album!

        Album Description

On this release, we are exceptionally pleased to present to the world previously unreleased outtakes from the Night Food sessions, recorded some thirty years ago with members of the Wailers backing band at Harry J under the auspices of Danny Holloway; the Wailers had been cutting Natty Dread at the studio, became involved in Night Food and eventually cut a few tracks of their own with the Heptones, and each song is complimented here by a crisp dub version, expertly mixed by high-ranking engineer Soljie Hamilton. Unlike the tracks that ended up on Night Food, none of the material here has been enhanced by international session musicians or string orchestras, resulting in a more raw and honest expression, closer to that originally intended by the artists.

5 out of 5 stars Great Heptones, Great Scratch Perry.......2007-03-30

Another great Auralux reissue, in depth liner notes, great crisp sound. You can't get any better than the great Leroy Sibbles wailing away with Lee Scratch Perry producing and the Wailers backing up.

These are outtakes from the Heptones' Night Food album, that stand up on their own, creating a whole alternative to that album. A real treat.

        5 out of 5 stars A favorite for 30 years.......2006-10-05

Like the next reviewer, I had this on record, and now have the CD. I have loved this music for 30 years. If you love 20th century American music, give it a try. I wish you as much pleasure as I have received from it.

5 out of 5 stars Proof that American songs can be great.......2002-07-05

I have had the lp issue of this album for many years and have enjoyed it more with each encounter. The songs by Duke, Bowles, Citkowitz, Chanler, and Copland are based on some familiar poems, but the songs are not, themselves, well-known. I particularly have liked the witty and memorable Duke settings of E.A. Robinson's "Luke Havergal" and "Miniver Cheevy," but the real musical highlight of the disc would probably be the settings of James Joyce's "Chamber Music" by Israel Citkowitz. Donald Gramm is in fine voice for his selections and Bethany Beardslee proves again her legendary status as an interpreter of all kinds of modern music. It is definitely a good thing that this has been reissued on CD and I hope it will reach a wide audience.

5 out of 5 stars predawn hangout, late night rendezvous.......2003-11-25

Certain CDs take on characteristics other than the music offered, it's what I would call "flavor". On MOS's Late Night Sessions III, Terry Farley and Pete Heller manage a tour of the late night coffee houses that double as trendy hotspots scattered throughout the UK. The special kind of places where people tend to drift toward, gather, mix, mingle, exchange ideas, contacts, discoveries, share stories, and hip each other to upcoming events. These bastions of culture accidentally become the marks of embarkation for the evenings activities and the ultimate safe return when exhaustion sets in. Places that unintentionally become proving ground on the current scene. This social phenomena is essential in understanding this very comfortable, honest collection of wonderful, downtempo house tunes corralled for this compilation. Farley and Heller know their stuff. Meant as an after-hours cool down collection from the rough and tumble club chaos, these 2 disc serve as an educational journey through the best of house music's history. Not all tunes are current, but remain relative and essential for completion of the project. This isn't just entertainment, it's a package deal of substance and style. 25 choice cuts to numerous too mention but a few: John Cutler and DJ Roman - The Ride, King Britt - Scuba, The Good Reverend Dr. Gary Henry - Faith, Francois K - Time and Space, Scott Grooves - Organ Nights, Blue Six - Music and Wine, Fresh and Low - Going Away, Soul Dharma - Flower, Elegia - From Nowhere With Love, Nick Holder - Paradise, and Mutiny - Bliss. It all has a familiarity like all these tunes have been hanging out together, grooving, being buddies for a long time. Farley and Heller are hipped as the mix flows like the blue river Danube for Mozart in 1755 - clean, uncluttered, with grassy picnic banks, and late night frolicking swims. Grab a latté or Café Oley, add some pastries, crumbled cheese, and gather round with company you love to keep. Late Night Sessions III will score the fond memory deep into your subconscious mind. You can play it back time and again with each spin of this subliminal album.

5 out of 5 stars The late night/chillout CD to finish off a night of clubbin'.......2002-02-07

This was the third and final installment of the Ministry of Sound's Late Night Sessions. The excellence that was demonstrated on the first two CDs in the series (the first mixed by DJ Harvey and the second by X-Press 2) continued with Farley and Heller.

The first CD of this third volumn has so many tracks that stand-out as real gems like "Ncameu", a very soulful, deep house tune. "Equitorial" is also a soothing track as well, but with a more Latin, tribal beat. One of my favorites is the "The Ride" which is definitely deep house, but on the progressive/trance side. And King Britt's "Scuba" is definitely not to be missed. But, my absolute favorite on CD 1 is "Faith", a very deep, dark, soulful track that lurks around with a very meaningful spoken refrain. After listening to this track, you will definitely believe that "Faith is your best friend." And the Latin-infected "Feel What You Know" will give you a little invigoration before coming back down.

The second CD is deeper and slower than the first. It is obvious that there is a progression going on here. As the CD moves, the tracks become darker and more mellow. The best track on CD 2 is Blue Six's "Music and Wine". This is definitely one of the best deep house track ever. It has an excellent groove that certainly helps you relax. And probably many clubbers and househeads can probably relate to the track's chorus. Then comes "Singing Da Blues" which reminds me of Billie Holiday. The track is steady, haunting, almost hypnotic and the acoustic guitar adds the perfect touch. Other favorites are "Float", "Going Away", and "From Nowhere with Love."

Overall, this is a fantastic CD. Farley and Heller really did an excellent job choosing, then mixing the tracks together. If you can get your hands on any of the Ministry of Sound's "Late Night Sessions" compilations, you will not be disappointed. This Farley and Heller mix is probably my favorite, but all of them are excellent. These CDs have the quality and skill that are lacking on the MoS' current "Chill-Out" Sessions series.
