Amazon.com essential recording
Guitarist Bill Frisell has always had an ear for unusual tonal colors, and they're particularly strong on this 1984 recording, an early and enduring document of a major musician's work. There's a distinctive emphasis on brass and the lowest registers, with Kenny Wheeler on trumpet and flügelhorn, Bob Stewart on tuba, and Jerome Harris on electric bass; drummer Paul Motian completes the quintet. The thick, bass-heavy textures and contrasting layers of sound give the music an almost orchestral quality, while Frisell and Wheeler's shared love of pitch bending sometimes gives the eerie sense of funhouse mirrors, a dream of sonic and temporal distortion. "Rambler" is a mirthful echo of mariachi music, "Music I Heard" is propelled by unlikely allusions to march rhythms, and "Resistor" has some of Frisell's most animated playing on disc, his guitar synth creating a Pandora's box of unexpected sounds and twisting, mercurial lines. --Stuart Broomer

4 out of 5 stars Great Historic Bluegrass!.......2005-03-21

When I was a child, my grandmother owned an old KING album by Ralph Stanley called "Brand New Country Songs". That recording was made in 1967 and has been out of print for far too many years, but finaly, here it is in the first twelve tracks of this wonderful box set.
At the time, I didn't know much about Bluegrass Music itself, other than the fact that I loved this album.
The best and most memorable of the songs on that album were "Hemlock and Primroses", "Wonderful World Outside", and "Love Please Stay". These are beautiful lonesome mountain love songs. However, there are humerous moments too (Poor Rambler), and great instrumentals ("Roe Hoe" and "Lost Train").
What I didn't know at the time was the fact that the "Brand New Country Songs" album was the first Ralph recorded after the passing of his brother Carter (together Ralph and Carter were the legendary Stanley Brothers), and Ralph hired a young 19 year old fellow named Larry Sparks who sounded much like the late Carter Stanley.
Larry went on to have a great career in bluegrass music.
Anyway, also featured here are two other great albums by Ralph ("Over The Sunset Hill" and "Hills Of Home"). Both of these albums featured the haunting lead vocals and guitar of Larry Sparks, who sounded much more mature at the time than his 19 years.
In addition to these classic albums, you get the entire session recordings made for Ralph's colaboration with Jimmy Martin (recorded in 1980). - Let's try not to upset some of the Bluegrass musicians out there but there are drums in the Martin/Stanley portion of this set. So much for the argument that drums and traditional Bluegrass don't go together.
At any rate, this set is well worth the money, and it deserves 5 stars... the only reason I gave it four instead of five is the quality of the master tape was poor and (especially if you listen to it on a headset) you hear lots of tape flutter and noise, but it's well worth sitting through that for these long lost treasures.
It's worth the money and more. If you like good traditional Bluegrass, buy this today and consider the Stanley Brothers box sets on the KING label.

5 out of 5 stars RAMBLER.......2000-04-14

CORRECTION: Tommy Thompson is not "the late," as the 3d review of RAMBLER states. He is alive and well in Chapel Hill, NC, though he left the Ramblers in 1994, a victim of early-onset Alzheimer's disease.

5 out of 5 stars The best ever from a group who never disappoint.......1999-08-04

The Red Clay Ramblers bring together a collection of traditional tunes, older jazz, and original tunes which are squarely in the tradition in the way that only they can. My favorite among a collection of superb tracks is "One Rose/Hot Buttered Rum". "One Rose" is an instrumental reminiscent of Jay Ungar's "Ashokan Farewell"; it segues into Tommy Thompson's "Hot Buttered Rum", a vocal number of equal, though different, beauty. The Ramblers' combination of knowledge of several different but related traditions with creativity and solid musicianship will not be found again.

5 out of 5 stars A uniquely American band that defies classification........1998-10-09

"Rambler" is the latest studio CD of the Red Clay Ramblers. It is a showcase of the band's breadth, which runs from traditional American ("Cotton-Eyed Joe"), to traditional Scottish ("Queen of Skye"), to original ballad (the heartbreaking "Black Smoke Train"), to brilliant string-band instrumentalism ("Ryan's/Jordan's Reel") to the stone zany ("Hiawatha's Lullaby").

The Ramblers don't tour much anymore (except in theatrical productions that they write), which is a shame. If you go back and listen to some of their vinyl albums, you will hear a similar unwillingness to be type-cast as one sort of band or another. They have been around, in one incarnation or another, forever.

I think they are great to listen to while driving, because the variety keeps it interesting.

5 out of 5 stars Everybody's favorite "Whatnot Band" sings again!.......1998-07-09

Though nothing compares to seeing the band live, "Rambler" provides a good sampling of the slightly goofy, very thoughtfully developed sound that is uniquely the Ramblers'. Not many of their albums are avaiable on CD -- so this one is all the more worth getting in this format. It represents the band at a crossroads: matured and relaxed, but with the zany energy of the late Tommy Thompson. Until their next album, this may be the best of the bunch.

The fortyish Vaughn isn't old enough to have lived through the '60s as an adult, but still he's an unswerving disciple of southern soul, Tex-Mex, and AM pop/rock staples of that era. Though he's written songs for Marshall Crenshaw and with everyone from Dave Alvin to Alex Chilton, his own albums often come up short. (He's only a so-so singer and most of his songs sound like they've been written before.) Why, then, is Rambler 65 so much fun? It could be the gimmick behind its creation (Vaughn recorded this lowest of fi album in the car named in its title). More it's the songs themselves: the Nick Lowe-like raver "Seven Days Without Love," the psychedelic pop of "Levitation," and Sir Douglas Quintet sound of "Boomerang." Sure, it's dopey at times ("Heavy Machinery" and the god-awful "Rock is Dead"), but mostly it's good, retro fun. --Keith Moerer

This music is really fun. It is such a guy CD. Imagine an artist creating music about his car and then turn his car into a recording studio so that he can record these songs in his car. All this with the dream of hearing these songs be played over said car's radio as he drives thru Santa Monica! That is what Ben Vaughn did. He brings back a lot of memories for teens in the 70's who had quite a love affair with their cars. Play it loud in your convertible as you drive down Pacific Coast Highway.

I would not listen to the 1 star review. If you don't like choppy music you don't like Mark Olson. His music is not catchy and does not immediately grab you. But if you give it time it has this effect that is unexplainable. I am not sure he is the better half of the Jayhawks, but I do know the Jayhawks were a more interesting band with Mark. This is an excellent record, but do not believe your going to be singing along after 1 spin. With early alternative country (Gram Parsons, The Byrds, etc) that was possible. This indulges patience and rewards those who are willing to dig beneath the catchiness of music.

    4 out of 5 stars Don't listen to the 1 star review!!!.......2004-06-14

I love alt.country. I love the Byrds, Gram Parsons, UT, Wilco, Jayhawks, Gillian Welch etc. As a result, I sought out some Mark Olson stuff, since he had been, in my opinion, the better half of the Jayhawks. In my search I ran across this album. The descriptions noted that Pacific Coast Rambler was a jangly affair, recorded in a home studio, and was mostly acoustic. I just had a feeling about it, so I picked it up. All I can say is that the disk is amazing. From the cover art, to the pictures, to the last song the album has a very warm feel with sparse production, textured arrangements, beautiful vocals, strumming acoustics, and good lyrics. The biggest surprise was that Mark really has a Gram Parson's thing going on when he sings with his wife, Victoria Williams, who is all over this album.
Friends, if you dig the acoustic, slightly twangy side of alt.country, pick this cd up and disregard the 1 star review below. This CD is a hidden masterpiece from the Joshua Tree forest, where the Dippers live and record. Highly recommended for Gillian Welch fans.
    Peace

I've got a pretty good collection of laid-back, Gram Parson's influenced indie-country rock and no-depression type stuff and love most of it. I even like the Jayhawks. I haven't bought a cd I was sorry to buy in years, and I buy a couple of cds every week. Until I got this cd, I had a pretty stellar and luck-filled record. This is the first cd I've bought in a while that I've considered selling back or even throwing out. I find I am constantly whincing when I listen to this-- it's that embarassing. The lyrics are absolutely terrible and the sentiment is worse than what you'd find in a Hallmark card. I've given it many listens and tried to like it, but the doggerel verse and out-of-tune, cringe-worthy music makes that impossible. Without a doubt this is the worse cd I've bought in at least 2 years. What's odd is that I've only seen good reviews for it, which is partially why I bought it. I'm writing this so at least there is another view displayed. If at all possible, see if you can find a sample of the lyrics and music before you buy.

    Customer Reviews:

    4 out of 5 stars surprisingly good.......2007-06-19

I'd like to start out with an excerpt from M. Richards' review, "I avoided this cd despite it's great reviews because I always like Frisell's later works from the early '90's. I was wrong. This is as strong as some of his best recordings today." I share this sentiment. Frisell has always been a guitar visionary. That written, his music didn't really bloom or mature into consistent greatness until the late 1990's. Thus it's easy to be skeptical about Frisell's second album. That written, "Rambler" has turned out to be one of the most rewarding efforts that I've come across from Frisell's early period. Up there with "Where in the World?," "Rambler" is surprisingly strong. As with much of his early music, it is orchestrally driven. That written, it is loose enough to feel like a proto-Quartet project. Those accustomed to his later discography get immediate gratification with familiar songs. The title track and 'When We Go' are played on the Ginger Baker Trio's "Going Back Home." 'Strange Meeting' is one of the highlights off "Bill Frisell with Dave Holland and Elvin Jones." Despite the albums strengths, it is not a place to begin with Bill Frisell -unless the listener is an ECM junkie. At the end of the day, "Rambler" sounds dated. This is due to the production and performance. That written, this dated quality sometimes plays as a strength. For example, Frisell occasionally employs a synthesizer used by Robert Fripp during the same time period. This wonderfully retro sound is immediately recognizable by anyone familiar with King Crimson's music from the same epoch -think "Discipline" and "Beat." While not a place to begin, "Rambler" is a great listen for the Frisellian who has played out Bill Frisell's first tier recordings.

    1 out of 5 stars CRAP!.......2004-07-03

Can't imagine what drugs Bill was on when he compiled this Album. One star is too many! "Tone" & "Music I Heard" are without a doubt the worst part, but the whole thing stinks! The title tune is bearable. What was he thinking?

    5 out of 5 stars a true gem.......2001-12-14

this cd was my introduction to bill frisell when it was released back in the 80s. rambler still stands as one cd i would take with me if moving to a desert island... it holds up better to repeated listening than almost any other recording due to its haunting melodies and deeply textured atmospheres. imagine two jazz trios performing on stage at the same time - one with guitar, bass and drums - a second trio with tuba, trumpet and drums. now imagine them sharing the same drummer and sounding totally comfortable with each other. that's rambler!

5 out of 5 stars A nice surprise from 1984.......1999-12-21

I avoided this cd despite it's great reviews because I always like Frisell's later works from the early '90's. I was wrong. This is a strong as some of his best recordings today. If you are a Frisell fan and haven't heard this cd, you will be pleasantly surprised. It is on par with "Quartet", another great Frisell album.

5 out of 5 stars Excelent Blue Grass for the new listener........1999-03-14

This is an excelent CD for the new bluegrass enthusiast. The disk starts (and ends) with an upbeat instiumental (RU4 Reel) Excelent ballads (Wait a Minute, The Words She Wrights Tonight) and some "good old down home" roots of bluegrass spiratuals (Shake Hands With mother Again, Preachin' Prayin' Singin'). This disk has a good blend of all the "required" bluegrass instiuments, mandolin, fiddle, banjo, bass and gituar and a dobro thrown in for good measure. Vocals are clear and understandable to the most novice (read non-southern like mine) ear. If you can listen through the short instrumental "The Weasel" with out a little toe tapping bluegrass may not be for you.

    Album Description

"On "SHINING DOWN", piano player and singer-songwriter Mike Craver's subjects include a lovably coarse female music fan named "Diamond Lil," a young man who loses his legs and his soul in the Battle of Argonne Forest and a 1920s-era woman who realizes that her would-be fiance of 10 years is going to leave her an old maid.

Some of the best tracks, including the title cut, come from Craver's 1998 Old West-themed musical "Bosh and Moonshine."

In the creepily funny "When I Was a Little Wee Babe," gay undertaker Reverend Mould tells of how he went from performing mock funerals for his dolls to opening a business in which repairing bullet holes in real corpses costs a little extra.

In "The Butterfield Stage," a Dodge City resident recounts meeting his mail order bride - a woman who turned out to look a little like a horse and whose teeth "were like stars - they came out at night."

While many of Craver's songs sound sort of idiosyncratically contemporary, Craver is masterful at capturing the sound and feel of past eras. In addition to "The Butterfield Stage" (presented as a jaunty saloon ballad), "That Wicky Wacky Hula Hula Honka Honolulu Honey of Mine," from his musical "Radio Gals," is an original tongue-twisting number that perfectly re-creates the goofiness of the 1920s Hawaiian craze.

Craver provides plenty of laughs, but his songs and his characters have too much heart to be dismissed lightly.

"Shining Down" is a little more piecemeal and less dark than Craver's brilliant 1999 disc, "Wagoner's Lad." However, it's a joy and it seems better with every listen." --Wayne Bledsoe. KNOXVILLE NEWS AND SENTINEL

5 out of 5 stars Mike Comes Through Again.......2006-06-06

Mike Craver is one of the most versatile musicians and songwriters on the planet. He and Tommy Thompson were, in my opinion, the heart and soul of the Red Clay Ramblers before Mike's departure and Tommy's illness and untimely death.

Mike is just as good on his own. His Wagoner's Lad, released in 1999, is, as far as I'm concerned, one of the all-time great CDs. Shining Down, as Wayne Bledsoe notes in his review, is not as unified a CD as Wagoner's Lad. I also agree with him that Wagoner's Lad had a couple of very painful, sad, and dark songs on it. Shining Down is, with the exception of a couple of songs ("Edwin" and "Argonne Wood"), just great fun - and, far more important, wonderful music. From a song set to the tune of "Sweet Betsy From Pike" to pieces written in light rock and early jazz styles, there's lots to enjoy here, and I enjoy it a little more every time that I listen.

    5 out of 5 stars Absolute Entertainment.......2002-07-13

Mike Craver has outdone himself with "Shining Down." This collection has a myriad of musical tales - the kind of stories you can listen to over and over and find something new each time.

The music is brilliant, the lyrics are genius - it's pure, good old fashioned, entertainment and songwriting up to par with Porter, Arlan, and all the greats!

Buy it, you won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Nothing But Good!.......2002-07-07

Mike Craver's Cd "Shining Down" is another collection of his genious mind and his talent of writing. "Diamond Lil" is one of my favorites. "Argon Wood" is a beautiful, but sad story of a young man going to war (WWI). Other great selections are, "I'm Yellow","Dear Mr. Gershwin." My all time favorite is "Watson Come Here!"-which is a song about the telephone inventor.

You will agree that all these songs were meant to be recorded all on the same album. You will get a little folk, broadway, tin pan alley and a whole lot more!! A wonderful job Mike.
