In 1955, Miles Davis signed on with jazz powerhouse Columbia Records. With alto and tenor saxophonists Cannonball Adderley and John Coltrane, drummer Philly Joe Jones, bassist Paul Chambers, and pianist Red Garland, Davis released 'Round About Midnight, which evinces even more clearly what a phenomenal unit Davis was nurturing. Stylistically, Midnight encompasses standards (or soon-to-be standards) such as "Dear Old Stockholm," "Bye-Bye Blackbird," Tadd Dameron's "Tadd's Delight," and Jackie McLean's forward-thinking composition "Little Melonae." Miles and company reprise "Budo" from the historic Birth of the Cool sessions. The standout track is Davis's Harmon-muted reading of Thelonious Monk's ballad, "'Round Midnight, which is still a Miles standard bearer. Three alternate takes round out the session: "Two Bass Hit" and "Sweet Sue" feature adventuresome solos by Coltrane that preview his masterpiece "Giant Steps." And Garland moves away from his Ahmad Jamal pianisms with his introspective ivory ticklings. If you want to hear the origins of post-bop modern jazz, this is it. --Eugene Holley Jr.Album Description

A Miles Davis Masterpiece (Review Based On Original Tracks Only).......2006-08-06
One last thing I'd like to comment on is the album's remaster. Up until a few days ago, I had only heard this album on a scratchy old vinyl. And while normally I don't really notice sound quality (except if it's painfully obvious), the remastering job for 'Round About Midnight is excellent.

Customer Reviews:
Riddle Excellent, Ronstadt OK.......2007-02-06
Have heard much better (and much worse, Rod Stewart, c'mon...), Sinatra, Fitzgerald, Nat King Cole, Peggy Lee.
Most of her songs are sweet, pretty, but not much above what you'd hear with a good 1930's or 1940's "bird" out front of the big band.
Only the best will do.......2006-12-11
I have a hard time comparing her to any other standard singer, but if you want to hear the difference between her and the others just listen to her Christmas CD and that will explain it all. I am a huge Ella Fitzgerald fan and I have heard all the others, but I place Linda right up there in the top 10, if not the top 5, She can sing any type of music and is one of the very best harmony singers ever, just listen to the Trio album.
My favs (if I had to choose) are FUNNY VALENTINE, "ROUND MIDNIGHT, and of course the other title songs, but I love all the songs. It's not just one thing with Linda, it's the whole package, fans will know what I mean.

A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10
The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).
This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.
I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.
a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15
Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

Dowland did for lute music what Haydn did for the string quartet and Beethoven the piano sonata. The finest lutenist and songwriter of his age--he composed several of the greatest hits of the late 16th and early 17th centuries--the surviving lute works constitute a sort of encyclopedia of the possibilities of the instrument. There are song arrangements, dance pieces, tributes to the composer's friends, even a musical self-portrait. Much of the music is fashionably sad. Lute songs generally deal with the agony of lost love, and Dowland's most popular tune was called Lachrimae (Tears). Paul O'Dette is simply the best lutenist alive. These five discs are available together at a special price, or separately. A reference edition. --David HurwitzCustomer Reviews:
Outstanding.......2007-03-31
It's not heavy breathing.......2006-08-22
Others have remarked on the "heavy breathing" noticeable on the recordings -- it's not heavy breathing, but the movement of his fingers on the gut strings making that sound.
Technically good, emotionally bland. .......2006-04-11
but especially in the US, this set becomes an essential "must have" for all lovers of the lute.
Yet it somehow disappoints.
I am sure that Paul O'Dette is brimming over with virtuousity and a technical expertise
that I am hardly one to pass sound judgement upon.
But the recordings have a flatness and monotony;
the songs are rendered with precision, but seem to lack feeling, empathy, or enthusiasm throughout the offering.
It is an impressive compendium, and I'm glad I purchased it.
There are very few lutenists out there producing any music at all, so Mr. O'Dette should certainly be praised
for delivering such a substantial feast to our ears.
It just should have had more flavor.
Where is Konrad Ragossnig when you need him?
Highly recommended.......2005-10-23
A few tunes appear more than once as Dowland reused some work, but the arrangements are sufficiently different to be interesting. It is his complete lute works, after all. Some might criticise the set for sounding too much in the same style. It is the work of one composer, and if you happen to like the style, as I do, this is a pro rather than a con.
Another reviewer mentioned obtrusive breathing on the recording. I had listened to Volume 1 for two years before reading the review and had not noticed this. On listening carefully, there is breathing audible, but I do not find it a problem. Perhaps it depends whether one listens to the music or the background.
just a warning..........2005-10-14

An Artist For All Time.......2006-08-04
With selections like "A Streetcar Named Desire", "Make Someone Happy", "I Think It's Going To Rain Today", "Since I Fell For You", "I'm Gonna Laugh You Right Out Of My Life", "Blues In The Night", and Joe Sample joining in on "Round Midnight" nothing could be more sublime!
Even today as Kenny performs, his music is as brilliant as ever. As of this writing, Kenny is still going strong performing his great and soulful songs. A must-have cd for any Kenny Burrell fan.

Fellow jazzguitarist Tal Farlow said on Burrell " I can spot his playing anywhere. His chord conception is wonderful and you are always aware of the harmonic movement in his work. That is particulary evident in his single line string solos..he is just one of the greats"
So much for Farlow...I think that this recording is one of the very best Burrell done..it almost reaches his masterpiece "God Bless teh Child" from the year before.
One little interesting thing is that the Randy Newman song "I Think it is going to rain today" was recorded by Larry Goldings and Peter Bernstein 30 years later and appears on Goldings "MoonBird"
I might be wrong..but I think they heard Burrells version prior to that recording.
This is the meaning of "COOL"!.......2002-02-22
I remember writing to "Fantasy Records" , begging them to release this one on CD. Well, here it is folks, and i've bought about 3 copies of it just in case they start wearing out again!
Please let me state that if it's lightning speed you like in jazz guitar playing don't consider this c.d.
Although Burrell CAN play at frenetic speeds (check out "BLUE LIGHTS" volumes 1 & II , or "All Day Long/All Night Long" ) this is not his aim.
Burrells goal has always been to acheive feel, soulfulness and emotion and he succeeds EVERY time
whereas hundreds of other guitar players fail miserably.
If you are looking for a beautifully,BLUESY, relaxed setting, with plenty of gorgeous Fender Rhodes electric piano (by Joe Sample ) then this one is yours. The atmosphere Kenny creates here well matches the album title 100%! It's high quality "dinner jazz" but with a cool blues edge.
If you are a rock or blues guitarist reading this review please note this is the guy who was a HUGE influence on Stevie Ray Vaughan (listen to Stevies homage to him on the track "Chitlins Con Carne" on his c.d. "The Sky is Crying"!)
and Kenny Burrell influenced Hendrix as well who was noted as saying " if there's anyone i would love to sound like it would be Kenny Burrell" What drew these two rockers into Kenny's space was Burrells unique feel for the Blues. Even though he plays Blues with the sophistication and finesse of a classical guitarist Kenny still maintains a downhome, lonesome edge. Kenny, Herb Ellis and a few others are the only surviving jazz guitarists from the "old school" and constitute a direct link with Charlie Christian . Listen out for the first track " Streetcar Named Desire"...and an INCREDIBLY BEAUTIFUL lonesome, terrace- top setting for Johnny Mercer's " Blues In The Night". Kenny's adaptation of Randy Newmans classic "I Think It's Gonna Rain Today" is soulful.
"Since I Fell For You" has Kenny preaching the Blues again.
You won't be disappointed if you get this CD.
This is one of the very best Burrel recordings........1999-08-13

Miles Davis's long relationship with Columbia began with the 1955-56 recordings heard here, as the trumpeter's suddenly rising career curve was consolidated after the move from the independent Prestige label. The band on this CD is the first of Davis's classic quintets, the extraordinary group with John Coltrane, pianist Red Garland, bassist Paul Chambers, and drummer Philly Joe Jones that still stands as the definitive ensemble in modern mainstream jazz. The music ranges from the smoldering emotions of Davis's distinctively muted ballad performances to the searching quality already apparent in Coltrane's keening horn, while the band's unique chemistry is apparent on "Dear Old Stockholm" and the novel counterpoint of Charlie Parker's "Ah-Leu-Cha."The Legacy Edition contains four bonus tracks from the original sessions, plus a second disc of live material - one track from the Newport Jazz Fest 1955 (with Thelonious Monk), and eight previously unreleased tracks from the 1956 Pasadena concert. --Stuart Broomer

Buy it Again, Anyway. It's way, way too good........2005-06-17
Regarding the Monk selection, the way that each man inspired the other is perhaps nowhere near so claerly evident as on this track. By itself, it would justify the price. Following with the never before released concert from Pasadena makes the second disc worth releasing on its own merits. The goof-ball MC sounds like such a cornball in his intro to Davis and his band, that you will find yourself squirming in humour. Imagine Jack Benny introducing P Diddy. Actually......
well, anyway, the band kicks in and there is an undeniable energy that they bring to the audience. Hopefully, as is the case with Hendrix, there are lodas of concert tapes from this quintet as well asmany of the other formations Miles put together. Miles was a live player. The studio records were phenomenal, but he knew the dialectics of live performance better than any jazz artist before or after him.
replace your other copies of this essential document. What you are familiar with will delight you, and the new stuff will astound you.

Soundtrack buffs may know that this score to director Bertrand Tavernier's alluring jazz period piece inexplicably won the 1986 Oscar for best soundtrack instead of Morricone and his rich, enduring music for The Mission. That injustice aside, it remains a worthy collage of vintage jazz standards, new material, and contemporary performers, as filtered through the spirit of the story's main character (an amalgam of Bud Powell and Lester Young) and the '50s Paris jazz scene. It's also a tribute to Round Midnight musical director Herbie Hancock, with his crucial understanding that jazz--and especially bebop--can never stand on tradition, lest it lose its very reason for being. Thus he lets then-newcomer Bobby McFerrin loose on Monk's moody title track, gives vet Chet Baker's horn and voice a warm turn in the spotlight on "Fair Weather," and allows Lonette McKee and star Dexter Gordon to infuse Gershwin's "How Long Has This Been Going On" with some languorous, subtly sexual heat. Other highlights include a romp through Monk's "Rhythm-a-Ning," Hancock's tense, modernist "Berangere's Nightmare," and the spare, enchanting duet with Bobby Hutcherson, "Minuit aux Champs-Elysees." Remarkably, most of the film's music was recorded live on the set, giving it a compelling warmth and immediacy that's increasingly rare. This new edition features expanded liner notes as well as a bonus cut of the title track performed by Dexter Gordon's quintet live at the Village Vanguard in 1967. --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:

Album Description
2006 GRAMMY NOMINEE!! Two-time Grammy winner Alan Broadbent continues to display his melodic touch on the beautifully recorded "Round Midnight." Known for his legendary playing with Woody Herman, Irene Kral, Chet Baker, Charlie Haden and countless others, Broadbent has recently been called upon by Linda Ronstadt, Diana Krall, Natalie Cole, and Michael Feinstein for his piano, arranging and conducting skills. "Round Midnight" is the perfect follow-up to Broadbent's Grammy nominated 2004 release "You and the Night and the MusicCustomer Reviews:
first impression: great bass solo.......2006-03-04
lyric piano, with a bit too much bass.......2005-12-14
This is a fine album, but I agree that there is too much bass here. Brian Bromberg, (whose "Wood" album is a new jazz classic not to be missed), isn't so much histrionic and show-offy as the bass is just mixed poorly. The bass is too loud in the mix, often louder than the piano and this distracts the listener from Boardbents lyrical piano. (maybe the producer could remix, just turn Broadbent up and Bromberg down!)
As in his previous album Alan Broadbent rolls out the fastest most articulate arpeggios, trills and grace notes since Jazz master Al Haig. And like Haig, they are at blazing speeds but in perfect meter. Great versions of the old standards.
If your stereo has a tone control (mine doesn't) maybe you can make a better album by turning down the bass! All is pleasant listenable swing. Approaches the level set by Broadbent's last, "You and the Night and the Music", I think, but it grows on you with repeated listening. All in all it's one of the better Jazz album's in a meagre year. I especially like the variations on the often done title track, the perky take on Charlie Parker's "High Groovin'" and his rhapsodic version of Leroy Anderson's "Serenade" .
Three to four stars in my tough grading system = B- for an album great when Broadbent is playing, graded down for Bromberg's distractions.
Another stellar outing from Alan Broadbent . . ........2005-11-06
Don't get me wrong; the man is a killer player; it's just that he seems more concerned with displaying his chops (not inconsiderable, it must be admitted) than fitting into a cohesive and dialogic group concept. Not that he can't do the latter; it just seems as if he gets bored or something and is always looking for an excuse to cut loose with some technically brilliant if not entirely apposite bass blasts. Moreover, he evidences a (not nowadays uncommon) propensity for his instrument's upper register when soloing, which will undoubtedly earn him accolades from either the uninformed or those mesmerized by such grandstanding, again emphasizing his chops and dexterity at the expense of spinning out lines that advance conversation. That said, it must be admitted that he is actually a very gifted musician, often supplying brilliantly imaginative statements and compelling conversation in a group setting. Still, if one encountered this session in a blindfold test, one might easily mistakenly think the disc is Bromberg's, not Broadbent's
Drummer Joe Labarbera, on the other hand, operates out of an almost opposite approach to Bromberg's: he's positively restrained on his instrument, and his solo statements are exercises in taste without sacrificing innovation. Where one might wish Bromberg to back off slightly, one might like to see a little more expressivism from Labarbera.
How such a pair can operate successfully, even brilliantly, as a rhythm section is a mystery, solved, perhaps, because the leader splits the difference between the two: He's got the chops of Bromberg and the taste of Labarbera, bringing these together so that the whole is infinitely greater than the sum of its parts. And that is the real genius of Alan Broadbent. He can be tasteful and expressivistic, restrained and loquacious, always displaying his ridiculous chops appositely, sans unnecessary and unseemly virtuosity. There may be more dexterous players (Jean-Michel Pilc) more tasteful players (Kenny Barron?) more chops-heavy players (Vijay Iyer, Eldar) more purely virtuoso players (Jacky Terrasson) more inventive players (Brad Mehldau) more idiosyncratically brilliant players (Frank Kimbrough, Omar Sosa) more percussive players (Iyer again, McCoy Tyner) more ravishingly romantic players (Keith Jarrett) but no one who combines elements of all these approaches as profoundly and effectively. Besides, I'm not sure if there's a better interpreter of standards alive, pace Keith Jarrett and Bill Charlap.
So even if there's perhaps a little too much of Bromberg on this disc, it nevertheless contains a very high level of conversation, entirely worth hearing and certainly worth acquiring by anyone who loves modern jazz piano of the first water. Warmly recommended.

Sophisticated and supple hard bop from the summit.......2006-07-23
Each of the tunes not only features first-rate (if understated) solo work but attention to compositional details that were frequently missing in "hard bop" performances of the era. Listen to the title song--with all of Monk's transitions and intertextual motifs intact--or to "Night in Tunisia," which may be less dramatic and forceful than the version with Clifford Brown and Art Blakey at Birdland but is ten times more musical.
The underrecorded, melodically lithe J. R. Monterose complements K. D. in the frontline as effectively as Hank Mobley, and the overrecorded Kenny Burrell has never sounded more inspired and assured, almost overmatching the more subdued approach of the other players. Bobby Timmons restricts his solo time along with the block chord cliches, turning in some of his most tasteful work on record.
While this may not be "the" Kenny Dorham recording, it belongs in the top 5--which, speaking of the pantheon of all-time trumpet greats, is probably the short list on which Kenny himself deserves mention.
