From "JazzTimes" May 2000.......2000-04-26
Guitarist Mike Stern lends his scorching licks on this fine self produced outing by the Italian born, Berklee trained Rhythm tandem of drummer Sergio Bellotti and bassist Tino D'Agostino. Bellotti is a hard hitter in the tradition of Dennis Chambers,as he so forcefully demonstrates on the opening track,D'Agostino's "Son Finite Le Vergini.' Full of challenging unison lines and demanding stop-time statements, this one harkens back to early Brecker Brothers and is fueled by D'Agostino's slippery,Jaco-like funk groove. After a lengthy Michael Brecker-influenced tenor solo by Bill Vint,Stern wails heroically like a bop inspired by Carlos Santana. He also rips it up in characteristic fashion on Vint's"Better Left Unsaid" and on guitarist Jim Kelly's funk vehicle"Mr. Stern." Kelly,a guitar professor at Berklee, lays out some slick, clean toned fingerstyle work on his earthy "Blue Caboose",then applies a warm over-driven tone for a flowing effect on his "Six for Costas.' D'Agostino's playing throughout is brilliant.Like Gary Willis,Jeff Andrews and John Patitucci, he has adopted some of Pastorius patented tricks while taking it a step further. On a lovely trio redention with pianist Greg Burk of "Someday my Prince Will Come"and on the soothing samba"Estate,"D'Agostino makes his most personal musical statements. Highly recommended to fans of Stern,Vital Information,Steps Ahead,Brecker Brothers and Yellowjackets.

A wonderful way to be introduced to the world of Jazz.......2000-01-18
As a relatively new listener of jazz I found this CD a wonderful compilation to add to my growing collection. There seems to be a little bit of everything for everybody from the beginner to the most discriminating jazz critic. Its funny how a friend's musical recommendation can quickly become a favorite. I love that this CD has the mixed talent of unknowns with jazz legends. Bellotti and D'Agostino are innovative and futuristic, yet keep to the valuable properties of Jazz. It's easy to see why they have been accepted not only here in the United Stats, but internationally. It's one of those CDs you can really sink your ears into. Every time I listen to it there is more to be heard. It's also one of those CDs that I can listen to in a variety of situations. I love to turn up the volume, light some candles and relax in a hot bath dreaming of those Italian hands gripping the intruments like the contours of my body...and there are times the music gets so intense it sends a chill right through me...Sometimes I bring the CD in to work and listen to it on my headphones. SPAJAZZY is wonderfully produced and mixed for an ideal stereo situation. This is one CD I bought blindly, but was soon impressed with the caliber and passion of the musicians. This is a wonderful gift for yourself or for any jazz fan.
The Best Jazz Fusion Recording of 1999!.......2000-01-02
Every once in awhile a group of brilliant artists join their talents and create music that is timeless. Spajazzy is difinitive proof of just such an event!
Bravo!.......1999-07-28
Excellent playing. These guys show us that Italy is still at the center of the music world. I especially like the first tune and the drummer has a lot of things happening.
This CD is a INSTANT STANDARD.......1999-05-23
This is a very great debut CD. Six for Costas is my favorite song, with a fantastic interplay between Sergio Bellotti (drum) and Bill Vint (sax) The first song (Son finite le vergine, composed by bassist Tino D'Agostino) is Scofield-like even though the guitar is played by MIKE STERN. There is another great guitarist: J. Kelly. His compositions are very sophisticated and cool! I think that SPAJAZZY is a great jazz-fusion group.
