Standards, Vol. 2
Amazon.com
The
Standards title here doesn't just refer to the familiar repertoire of classic American songs, since the opening "So Tender" is a Keith Jarrett original. The title is also an allusion to high standards, the level to which this group consistently plays on this 1983 continuation of
Standards, Volume 1. Jarrett and Jack DeJohnette had first come to prominence together as members of Charles Lloyd's quartet in the '60s, and there's a special empathy between them, Jarrett's rhapsodic inventions fueled by DeJohnette's loose yet sparkling playing. Gary Peacock, a veteran of piano trios with Jarrett's principal influences Bill Evans and Paul Bley, is an ideal bassist for this format, anchoring the music with his rich, woody sound while generating detailed countermelody with horn-like fluency. Alec Wilder's "Moon and Sand," more art song than standard, generates emotionally compelling and harmonically adventurous work.

Customer Reviews:
Track titles mixed-up.......2007-06-13
This isn't really a review of the songs (I like them.) I just wanted to say that when I put my CD in my PC and opened the player the track titles did not match the songs. They were all mixed-up. For example, when I double-clicked on "Lil Marlene" I got "On the Atchison, Topeka and the Santa Fe'. Very strange. I have no idea how this happened. The songs all sound great, though. It's just odd that the titles didn't match the actual songs.

I am in mt mid-sixties (1941). I enjoyed Volume 2 better than the original CD. Both were good and if you are from my generation, you should enjoy either one.
great 40's compilation........2007-03-18
i was born in 1961, but like the geeky audiophile that i am, i have eagerly dug into all the decades that have produced recorded music. i always thought that the forties were one of the weaker decades out there when it comes to sonic delights. so why do i love the two volumes of "songs that got us through wwii" so much? rhino records has a lot to do with it. as all audiophiles of the cd age now, rhino is one of the best outfits around when it comes to compilations of music. on these 2 wonderful discs from the forties, they have done it again. pure pleasure is to be had here. one drifts back to another time, across decades, to experience the popular songs of another american culture. this is a perfect introduction to that decade for anyone. having heard these two volumes, i can't wait to give the forties another chance. i am being won over, i think. thanks rhino.
Great Nostalgia.......2007-01-04
I purchased this CD collection for my residents in a dementia/Alzheimers care unit. They enjoy singing along with the songs from their youth, and some can even name the band/artist performing. The CD is a fun collection of lively and sentimental popular hits from the 40s. It would make a great gift for a person who grew up during this era.
Remembering more great songs from WW2.......2006-12-16
Hide your heart from sight,
Lock your dreams at night,
It could happen to you.
Don't count stars,
Or you might stumble.
Someone drops a sigh,
And down you'll tumble.
Keep an eye on spring,
Run when church bells ring.
It could happen to you.
All I did was wonder how your arms could be,
Then it happened to me.
You had better keep an eye on spring,
Run when church bells ring,
'Cause, it could happen to you, to you, to you.
All I did was wonder how your arms could be,
Then it happened, then it happened,
Then it happened to me.
Songs That Got Us Through WW2, Volume Two boasts an excellent collection of songs that remain wonderful to this day even though they didn't always make it to the number one spot on the charts. Mainstream white audiences loved these songs; but many a black soldier and his woman also cherished songs and ballads by Louis Jordan and his Tympany Five, Billie Holiday and Lionel Hampton and His Orchestra. This CD offers songs that appealed to both whites and blacks and that's excellent.
The CD starts off with the infectiously upbeat, happy-go-lucky "Jukebox Saturday Night" by the incomparable Glenn Miller and His Orchestra. The CD then takes a turn with the much more melancholy "Ration Blues" sung to perfection by Louis Jordan. Both black and white people could easily identify this song as rationing was very strict for everyone during wartime.
You won't find a single loser on this album. Other great songs include "There! I've Said It Again" by Vaughn Monroe and His Orchestra; "Lili Marlene" sung in German by Marlene Dietrich; "Is You Is Or Is You Ain't (Ma' Baby);" "You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To;" the Oscar winning "On The Atchison, Topeka And The Santa Fe;" "Mairzy Doats" and "It Could Happen To You."
The CD presents an excellent assortment of songs especially because there are various genres of music on this CD that were all very popular during WW2. "Mairzy Doats" and "Jukebox Saturday Night" were infectiously happy tunes and people could forget their wartime cares listening to these very well done songs. There's the universally shared lament of rationing in Louis Jordan's "Ration Blues;" and there's the human angst that accompanies a romance put on hold in songs like "You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To" and "Lover Man (Oh, Where Can You Be)." Excellent!
The liner notes contain an excellent essay about these songs and American wartime experiences by Billy Vera; and there are crisp black and white photos of legendary performers including Billie Holiday, Johnny Mercer, Dinah Shore and Woody Herman. The quality of the sound is very strong even on my portable CD player--terrific! Bob Fisher at Digital Domain worked wonders when he remastered these songs for CD.
Songs That Got Us Through WW2 provides us with a wonderful listening experience and will certainly bring back memories for those of us who lived through WW2. The selection of songs is excellent; and the remastering is flawless. I highly recommend this CD for fans of big band vocals and classic pop vocals.

Not nearly as good as Vol. 1.......2007-04-26
I love Ella Fitzgerald, so any of her albums are great, but for some reason this just doesn't have the same magic as Vol. 1 in this series. That is one of my favorite CDs, so I thought this one would be as good. She is always amazing, and the better songs on this album are 'Night and Day', 'So In Love', 'I've Got you Under My Skin', and 'Don't Fence Me In.' The last is probably my favorite. For an Ella fan, it's worth buying. But buy 'Ella Fitzgerald Sings the Cole Porter Songbook Vol. 1' first.
The Voices of Angels.......2005-08-30
Ella Fitzgerald is one of those rare people that can seldom be found in the world of musicians and vocal singing Jazz Ballads. She is masterful in both Volumes One and Two of the Cole Porter Song Book CD's. If you want to hear an angel on earth sing get both these CD's from Amazon.com, especially if your going to propose marriage to someone during dinner, I recommend that you have this music playing softly in the backround.
THE BEST COLE PORTER ALBUM EVER.......2001-07-28
This and Vol. 1 of "The Cole Porter Songbook" is the best collection of Porter's songs you'll find. Fitzgerald hits all the right beats. She's emotional when she should be emotional. Flirty when she should be flirty. Perhaps the most appealing part of her performance is the sense of humor that shines through. And so does Porter's. It's the best songwriter and the best singer all in one. How can you beat it? If you don't have Vol. 1, buy the complete set. You'll save money in the long run. Because you'll want both volumes once you have one of 'em.
I love Ella in the springtime.......2000-06-05
Even better than volume one. From the gorgeous rendition of I Love Paris to the delightful and fun Don't Fence Me In (which noone else should even bother singing again because Ella has perfected it), this CD has one great song after another, different in moods, yet united by their great arrangements and above all Ella's clear beautiful voice and perfect phrasing. On some of the tracks, especially I've Got You Under My Skin (this version blows Sinatra's away) and Don't Fence Me In, the sound quality is remarkable and it sounds like it was recorded yesterday not in the mid 50s.
De-Lovely.......2000-04-21
The companion to volume 1--you can't have one without the other. Beautiful, lyrical renditions of "I Love Paris" and "So in Love." "It's All Right with Me" is really hot, and "Don't Fence Me In" is a fun finish. Really, they're all favorites. As with volume 1, Buddy Bregman provides the apt orchestra arrangements. I can't honestly say whether I prefer either volume; whenever I listen to one of them, I invariably play the other immediately afterward.

Terrific versions of classic Porter songs recorded by jazz's greatest vocalists... It's hard to go wrong with this CD. This is the second volume of the Cole Porter's songbook and it is appreciably better than the first volume, which was titled "Night & Day"

Customer Reviews:
One of his best.......2006-10-08
I know that Jarrett himself has said all the standards albums are nothing compared to some of the trio's live performances around the same time. However this album is, in my opinion, one of his best (with this trio). It is very much like a fine wine and takes many listens to get it, but the renditions on several of the standards here are amazing once you do get it. My other personal favorite of this group is "Flying," and this is more contained than that, but the music on Standards, Vol. 2 is as classic as McCoy Expansions, or any VSOP or many of Mile's classics. It's phenomenal.
In addition, the retard reviewing this album above, who talks about "wheezemeister" and calculates in other (albeit great) pianists as though he's shopping at wallmart for "generic piano jazz on aisle 7" is laughable. His statements are like saying "why would you ever own a van Gogh... the guy cut off his ear. Just buy a Monet or Renoit or whatever." What a complete knob.
Anyway, this is definitely an album to own, if you are a Jarrett trio fan.
So tender ! If I had to bring one tune on an Island !.......2005-12-24
The first tune !! Magical ... What a beautiful album. Jazz at its best.
Great Music Destroyed by Annoying Vocals.......2005-10-14
It's amazing how few people are disturbed by this wheezemeister's meaningless, annoying noise that distracts the listener from the music. What a frustrating experience it is for me - just as you are starting to enjoy a great solo, as you watch its progression, that dreadful wheezing starts and knocks the bottom out of it! Why settle for this sort of thing when you have pianists like Corea, Evans, Desmarais or Hancock?
Stunning performances!.......2005-05-21
The ominous musicality and powerful sensitivity of Jarrett does not let any fissure. It is a quiet album with a wide spectre of sublime melodies in the most intimate chandle light atmosphere. Jarrett and his colleagues made to my mind one of the most overwhelming persoanl recordings not only of that decade but in the jazz story.
If you have not listened yet to Jarrett you are really missing of great moments to enjoy, because the high rapport and the warm enthusiasm is not so easy to find in other ensembles.Highly recommended.
Best Work Album by Far.......2004-09-22
This album is cool on its own, but is great when one is working, particularly at a creative function. This album is the best accompaniment for a writer. Period. I put it on, click on "continuous play," and roll. It's that simple.

The follow up to the original, this collection in many ways surpasses the initial effort. Duets seem to rule here, with Cyndi Lauper and Frank Sinatra double teaming on "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town," while the irrepressible Ronnie Spector shares the mic with Darlene Love for a resplendent "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree," and Heart's Ann and Nancy Wilson give "Blue Christmas" a steamy and sizzling once-over. Vanessa Williams stops the disc, though, with her simple yet stunning rendition of "What Child Is This." The then-sign-of-the-times inclusion, Michael Bolton, offers a forgettable "White Christmas," but it's the only real clunker in the bunch. Always just a tad too country to make it as a cross-over artist, Randy Travis still makes "Jingle Bell Rock" his own in his smooth way. --Steve Gdula

The new songs in this cd are great additions to the long list of popular Christmas songs. These tracks will endure like the rest of the good ones, and it's well worth getting for your Christmas collection!
It's ok........2007-01-03
I thought that I would love this series of music cd's, but I was wrong.
You get one of two great songs, and the rest are no good.
Great (semi)-modern Christmas record..........2006-11-27
Favorite tracks:
1. Tom Petty
12. Extreme
9. Ronnie Spector
There should be something for everyone. Rock to Country to Rap...
I want a Rickenbacker guitar.......2004-12-09
This album is good, but it isn't quite the classic that the first Very Special Christmas is. The highlight is definitely the opening song by Tom Petty. The rest of the album is somewhat uneven. While there are some fine performances by the likes of Sinead O'Conner, Ronnie Spector and Darlene Love, there are also a few lame performances by people like Jon Bon Jovi, Michael Bolton and Extreme. One of the oddities here is a "duet" between Frank Sinatra and Cyndi Lauper. They actually just used an old vocal by Frank from 1947 and added Cyndi's voice to it. In an interesting side note, they originally tried to have Paula Adbul do the duet, but she was unable to hit the right notes. The only artist here that is repeated from the the first Very Special Christmas is Run-D.M.C., but the song they do here is far inferior to the classic "Christmas in Hollis". Overall it's a decent Christmas album, and if you are a fan of the performers featured on it, I would recommend it.

Customer Reviews:
BRILLIANT.......2006-08-08
This CD is just BRILLIANT. It is every bit as good as the first Gershwin piano rolls CD. Gershwin plays Gershwin (and others) and his genius comes through. A total delight!
Pure Gold.......2004-01-25
When I first heard Rhapsody in Blue on this CD it didn't sound quite right. It was more free, more spontaneous, more joyous.
But that is because it went from the composer's mind directly to his fingers, bypassing the compromise of sheetmusic. It goes right to the heart of the listener.
If I was stranded on a desert island and allowed to bring only 10 CDs, this one just might have to be one of the ones I would have to take.
Pure Heaven.......2003-11-11
How would you feel if George Gershwin himself suddenly appeared out of nowhere, sat down at the piano in the corner of your own living room, and played away to his heart's content?
Amazement and delight would perhaps be fair, but not quite good enough words to describe it - pure heaven may just hit nearer the mark!
Such is the feeling that pervades this wonderful collection, which, no less magnificently done than the 1st Volume - an all-Gershwin program - also includes some of the sources of his inspiration.
This is a rare authentic glimpse into the mind of a giant, and listening to him in person affords a feeling of connecting directly to his universe, a feeling as magical as it is palpable.
The style of his playing is positive, decisive, clean, straightforward, no-nonsense, resolutely devoid of either sentimentality or cynicism. However somewhere between the lines engraved is his own heartbeat, full of hope, gentle irony, and complete and utter belief in everything good - be it friendship, love, or life itself.
A must for Gershwin lovers, a much-needed reminder of faith, in these turbulent times, for everyone else.
Gershwin "Live".......2000-08-04
Listening to these modern recordings taken from old piano rolls cut by George Geershwin between 1916 and 1921, one might be compelled to conclude that there's something to be said for older technology. We are able to listen to Gershwin performances that sound as though they occurred today. Obviously, an actual recording made at the time these rolls were cut would have had very primative sound quality, and nowhere near the immediacy which is present here.
The only reason for rating this four, rather than five stars, is that there's a certain player piano quality to the performances that I suspect is not exactly how Gerswin actually sounded; but, having said that, this is about as close as you're going to be able to get to a "live" Gershwin performance with modern sound.

Take A Sentimental Journey.......2007-07-12
Another fabulous compilation of the music of another time. This one is as great as Volume 1. Another winner!!
Classy ladies singing classy tunes!.......2005-09-26
After watching a T V commercial with the song "Shoo Fly Pie and Apple Pan Dowdy" playing in the background, I wanted my daughters to hear the complete song. We found this and I was very pleased to see that it included more of the beautiful songs from that era with many more of my personal favorites such as "Sentimental Journey", "I Don't Know Enough About You" and "Doctor, Lawyer, Indian Chief". Being a child of the sixties, these songs were popular before my time...but having been raised with an appreciation of the big band classics, I knew most of the tunes on this volume and wanted to give my daughters the same opportunity. It's great nostalgic music, with a wonderful variety of songs and artists. I highly recommend this musical...sentimental journey...back in time.
A strange, but pleasant collection.......2005-02-24
This CD is one of a number of CDs issued by Capitol with similar content; there is at least one other featuring female singers, and at least one specializing in male singers. The first thing to notice is that some singers are represented doing songs that other singers made famous, and even other singers who are on the CD as well. For example, Dinah Shore does Doris Day's "Sentimental Journey" while June Christy in turn does Dinah's "Shoo Fly Pie and Apple Pan Dowdy"! Another recording by Dinah Shore is, to be sure, one of a song she made famous, "I'll Walk Alone." But the version on this CD is not her 1944 hit version, but a much later recording (though this is not concealed in the liner notes). Obviously, much of what drove the selection of recordings for this CD was the availability of the song on Capital. Still, listening to the CD, I enjoyed all the performances, and consequently have to rate it as better than simply "OK" -- thus giving it 4 stars.
great intro.......2000-06-17

W.O.W. !.......2005-05-11
These songs are pure gold. Personally, I really enjoy the first 6 tracks. I mean, if it were a CD consisting of just Manteca or just Sinnerman, I would buy it on the spot. Believe it or not, after I listened to Manteca (which means lard in Spanish I found out), I bought many single-versions of the song. I Have Arturo Sandoval, Dizzy Gillespie, Jeff Golub, Poncho Sanchevez, and Woody Herman's versions of Manteca; I must say that Verve has chosen the best one again (Dizzy G's) for thier record. Props Verve, and keep up the good work.
The price is right.......2004-02-24
Why can't more CD's be priced like this fine offering from the Verve vaults?
For the cost of a couple of gallons of gasoline this music will take you further and you'll get plenty of mileage out of these classics. Beginning with the Carnegie Hall live recording by Dizzy Gillespie of "Manteca" in 1961, this disc will either take you down memory lane or set you on a new path of jazz discovery. Jazz means many different things to many different people, often discredited as being too cerebral or just plain high music, jazz often gets a bad rap. There is no clear definition because like many other genres there are many sub categories. Within the broad context of jazz this disc is diversified . Several great songbirds are featured including the marvelous, so nice the used here twice, Nina Simone, Sarah Vaughn, Ella Fitzgerald(two songs too), Betty Carter and Astrud Gilerto. Unlike the remixed versions featured on "Verve/Remixed 2," the complete songs display the full spectrum and range of depth of some these artists. For example, Nina Simone's vocals on "Sinnerman"show the gospell influenced style more clearly than on the remixed version and her piano skills are demonstrated along with her jazz interaction with other instrumentalists. It is a thing of beauty. The live version of "Brother , Where Are You"? by Oscar Brown Jr. has the passion of the Civil Rights movement, a slow swagerring, gritty song that builds momentum as the audience claps along joining the artist in unison in approval of his message. "Blues For Brother George Jackson"(check your history) fits the mold of what most non jazz people think of as jazz with it's multiple horns led by Archie Shepp with yet another Civil Rights era song. I would be remiss without mentioning the exceptional Latin influenced songs by Cal Tjader and Willie Bobo entitled "Soul Sauce" and "Fried Neck Bones and Some Home Fries" respectively. These two songs alone are worth the price of admission. It is worth comaparing the versions to the remixed versions to fully appreciate both the originals and the great job with the new interpretations. Recommended as is but even more so as a companion to the remixed versions. A super compilation for traditional jazz fans or those interested in the roots of "Verve Remixed /2."
Real Value for Money!.......2004-01-06
Even if you only liked two or three of the tracks here, you'd still be getting a great deal for your money. That said, every track here is a winner and it's easy to see why these were picked for remixing on Volume 2. Virtually all of them feature wonderful percussion, which usually translates into arresting remix sounds (like the mighty Six Degrees Records roster!). If you don't own any Nina Simone, start right here with the mighty 10 minute "Sinnerman," used to dazzling effect in the "Thomas Crown Affair." Her "Black is..." shows us what a unique talent she was. As far as Volume 3 goes, it will interesting to see if Verve ever gives the OK for some remixes of Getz, Bird or the mighty Trane. Perhaps people are scared to touch those, but regardless of your position of remixing, Verve Unmixed 2 is the perfect present to get for someone, especially if you're CHEAP!!!
Verve Unmixed - the Sequel........2003-09-07
"Verve Unmixed 2" is the companion CD to "Verve Remixed 2," in which a handful of dance DJs successfully revamp several jazz classics. Here, each track appears in its pure original version, giving the listener a tour through some of the genre's most respected artists. The album kicks off with the infectious bite of Dizzy Gillespie's "Manteca," which sets the tone for the rest of the album. Ella Fitzgerald's "Slap That Bass" and Ramsey Lewis' "Do You Wanna" stand out pretty well, while Cal Tjader's stunning "Soul Sauce (Guachi Guaro)" is a timeless fusion of traditional jazz and Latin flavor. Another winner is the beautifully piano-laced "Black Is the Color of My True Love's Hair," which features Nina Simone's voice in all its aching glory. There isn't much more for me to say, as the music really speaks for itself. If you already have "Verve Remixed 2," it would be foolish to pass on this release which not only has the original versions but also one of the most impressive tracklistings I've seen on any compilation.
More classics.......2003-09-05
This follow-up disc is every bit a great as the first. Do not let the low price scare you into thinking it's something less than high quality. A must have disc...fans and those unfamiliar with the Verve label will both enjoy that this music is BACK!!!!
