D'Angelo is obviously inspired by the progressive soul of the early '70s, but he has also borrowed carefully from the hip-hop of his own generation. Like many of his contemporaries, he has recorded a tribute to marijuana--the album's title--but it's far wittier than most. It takes the form of a conventional love song ("Brown sugar babe, I gets high off your love ... that's why my eyes are a shade blood burgundy") and mimics intoxication in its throbbing bass lines and reverb-heavy organ. Another song, with a title too profane to print, is a blunt tale of infidelity and murder, but in contrast to most rap fantasies, D'Angelo's blues-like narrative acknowledges such acts have serious consequences. Best of all is the Prince-like "Higher," which combines the spiritual love of God and the carnal love of a woman into one dizzying, organ-fueled hymn. D'Angelo is still rather clumsy with lyrics, and he leans too heavily on ballads over dance numbers, but he has enough talent to grow in any of several directions. It will be an exciting story to follow and one would be foolish to miss the first chapter. --Geoffrey Himes

5 out of 5 stars D'Angelo - Brown Sugar.......2007-06-11

D'Angelo's (A.K.A. Michaela Eugene Archer) debut album was "Brown Sugar" (1995). D'Angelo is a multi-talented musician- singer, song writer pianist, guitarist and record producer. This short ten track release is an impressive groundbreaking album full of excellent music. The album's opener is the smooth title track "Brown Sugar", a feel good love track with a great vibe to it. The laid back "Alright" follows, D'Angelo laces the track with some soulful vocals. "Jonz In My Bonz" was composed by D'Angelo and his former girlfriend Angie Stone, who is also the mother of his son. One of my early favourites is "Me and Those Dreamin' Eyes of Mine", D'Angelo croons away. D'Angelo sings about the scenario of finding his best friend with his wife on "Sh*t, D***, Motherf**ker". "Smooth" is just that, while "Cruisin" has D'Angelo doing a cover on a Smokey Robinson classic - delivering another highlight track. Soulful ballads follow in "When We Get By" & Lady". My personal favourite track on this album is the closer "Higher", D'Angelo does take his audience higher with this exceptional song. It would take D'Angelo, five years to deliver another album, with Voodoo (2000) a solid album worth checking out. D'Angelo has dealt with some battles in recent year's whether it be with drugs and rehabilitation or nearly dying in a car crash, heard hes working on a new album wish him all the best with that. "Brown Sugar" is definitely the D'Angelo album to have, full of soulful feel good music, D'Angelo took his audience on a journey to remember.

5 out of 5 stars A Classic!.......2007-06-08

I don't know why I didn't purchase D'Angelo's CD when he first hit the airwaves, but this CD has become on of my all-time favorites! Between this and Maxwell's Urban Hang Suite you can't miss!

5 out of 5 stars D'Angelo- Brown Sugar.......2007-06-07

Where did D come from??? He comes on the scene and just shakes everything up with is smooth sultry neo soul style that no one else could compete with in the day. Regardless of what i say in this review this album will be an all time great because it started the neo soul movement. But if you like the dance/party r&b of today, you probably will not like this type of album because it is sticktly soul music with a band and all music is played not engineered. Which is very good for a change. And ontop of that D's vocals are unmatched. He has such a silky smooth falsetto that is uncompareable. This album will move you. Because he just gets deep down in the soul with his music, that you swear its his soul singing. I mean the shere grooviness to the single "Lady" alone makes the album worth purchaseing. Then the laid back, rolling track "When We Get By" you will find yourself grooving to weather you like it or not. From the opening song "Brown Sugar" takes you on a laid back ride that you wont forget in a long time. I can assure you there will never be another album unless its from D like this. He just knows how to get in your soul with his music. And i heard it took him 6 years to finish recording this album which explains why it is for the most part perfect. But like i said dont by this album expecting Usher R&B, because you will be mistaken. But none the less it is worth buying for your laid back chill nights with your girl!

5 out of 5 stars D'angelo made a classic.......2007-05-07

D'angelo is another great singer who is in a class by himself. Its kind of hard to ignore the jazz and hip hop influences throughout this album. D'Angelo breathes life into every song and makes it hard for you to dislike it. The brother has talent. For starters anybody who didnt know that Brown Sugar was about weed is kind of slow. Brown Sugar, Chocolate Thai are old nicknames for mary jane but the song is still funky(I cant believe I said the word funky). Other excellent recordings are ALRIGHT, JONZ IN MY BONZ, ME AND THOSE DREAMIN EYES OF MINE, SMOOTH, WHEN WE GET BY, LADY etc. Bottom Line: D'Angelo's Brown Sugar is an album you can listen straight through without skipping a track. D'Angelo holds it down with the smooth vocals over beautiful production just a classic album period. Even though I liked his second album Voodoo, it cant compare with Brown Sugar.

Adelmo Fornaciari is better known to fans as Zucchero, which is Italian for sugar. The artist's sweet career is encapsulated on this 1997 item, which features his biggest smashes ('Senza Una Donna', 'Diamante' & 'Diavolo in Me') plus three previously unavailable tracks ('Menta E Rosmarino', 'EPPURE Non T'amo' & 'Niente Da Perdere') & a remake of Giuseppi Verdi's classical piece 'Va, Pensiero'.

5 out of 5 stars what a find!.......2003-11-27

I bought this cd on faith since I only knew one of the songs listed. I'm so glad that I did! Zucchero blends an intense and passionate voice with unusual but compelling lyrics. Give it a try. And don't underestimate the power of this cd for romantic mood-setting. Wow!

5 out of 5 stars A hidden gem.......2003-11-19

It is a real shame that this album only has one review, so I thought I would correct that.

As a Steve Vai, Steve Morse ( anything guitar instrumental actually ) you can tell this is not my usual listening "fodder", but you need some light and dark in any collection, and this is a fantastic collection of songs which I put on if I am in company.

There is not a single song that you will fail to either sing along to, or be moved by. I am not a great one for listing each track and saying this is very mellow, this has a great guitar solo etc, but in this album you have it all.

I should say that Zucchero has one GREAT voice.

Out of the three hundred or so albums I have, this could well be the one album I would take with me if I was limited to just one ... that is a huge compliment to its variety and yes, I agree with the previous reviewer ...GREAT FUN

Brilliant

5 out of 5 stars Upbeat and fun.......2000-03-10

This is a great, cheerful CD. It's full of upbeat songs, although I love the beautiful melody of "Diamante. Zucchero's music is certainly as beautiful as Bocelli's, but in a lighter way.

Amazing Album! Just as good as the Greatest hits. Zucchero is fabulose!

5 out of 5 stars The Zucchero we all love is back!.......2006-11-22

The expected release of FLY in the US is finally here!
It has all the usual elements of Zucchero,no surprises here. The ever fascination with Louisiana and the Mississipi is present once again with the Gospel Choir and blues guitar riff in Let It Shine (Which is included as a bonus track in English as Shine)the other bonus track is the English version of Occhi (Flying Away). The rest of the tracks is sheer signature Zucchero. However , the track that caught my ear was Cuba Libre. This is no brainer, if you are a Rock'n'Roll fan you will clearly identify this song as a scrambled/reshuffled California Dreamer by The Pappas and the Mammas, flute and all. Again no surprises here, Zucchero has done this in the past. If you rememeber well, he took Clapton's Wonderful Tonight; sped the tempo up and came up with Wonderful World, he even had Clapton as guest guitarrist!
The hand of legendary producer Don Was is noticeable in the first track Bacco perbacco, very funky a la Zucchero. The rest of the album for our delight is the Zucchero we all love, soulful and heartfelt ballads of love, fidelity,Blues and Rock'n'Roll. An essential in every Zucchero fan's collection.

5 out of 5 stars Classic, swingin' big band blues with terrific vocals..........2007-07-04

At last, the 4th release on Severn Records from the great Sugar Ray and the Bluetones. This CD, unlike the last, "Hands Across the Table," offers up more of a big band sound (reminds me more of Ray's great release from 1998, 'Sweet & Swingin' on Bullseye Blues and Jazz). Sugar Ray once again wrote 7 of the 15 generous tunes, and includes long standing bandmates Michael 'Mudcat' Ward on acoustic bass, Neal Gouvin on drums, and Anthony Geraci on piano, all in top form, including of course Ray on his harp.

What truly makes this a special CD, with incredible musicianship, is having the likes of the great Duke Robillard playing guitar on 8 of the tracks (what took so long for these 2 New England greats to get together)? and the outstanding 'Monster' Mike Welch on the other 7 songs (has Mike matured as a player and a singer, or what)?

Then, the coup is having 4 (yes, four) wonderful Roomful of Blues alumni (one still current) along to provide that inspiring big band sound. Doug 'Mr. Low' James on the baritone sax, Greg Piccolo on the tenor sax, the incomparable Carl Querfurth on the trombone, and one of the original members of Roomful, still playing an awesome trumpet for them, Mr. Bob Enos. I ask you folks, does it truly get much better than this? Give a listen and decide for yourself...mesmerizing, toe tapping music.

'Oh Babe' is a swinging, rollicking shuffle with great horns that will get you moving from the get-go. 'Little Green Frog' again features wonderful horns and reminds me a bit of a long lost Commander Cody and his LPA tune. 'I Want to be With You' is an opportunity for Ray to really display his incredible baritone -- great ballad/love song. 'You Better Change Your Ways' is another example of Ray's ability to use his voice to grab the listener, while 'Money Taking Mama' features great harp, piano and lyrics that will bring a smile to your face. The same is true of 'Shut Your Face,' a Sugar Ray original with all of the horns and guitar and lyrics to make you chuckle and nod your head in agrement...'I Don't Know' is a true catchy tune, while 'No Sorrow No More' exhibits excellent harp while expressing the sentiments of peace at last. 'The Last Words of a Fool' is a classic blues tune...other favorites (although I cannot honestly say that there are any weak songs on this CD) include 'My Last Affair,' 'Oh, Oh, Oh Pretty Baby (great harp and horns), 'Do You Remember'(great harp).

Bottom line is that this is a must have for all fans of Sugar Ray and the Bluetones. Moreover, any blues fan can't help but love and enjoy the ability of all of these outstanding musicians to play together, egos set aside, to create a truly masterful CD. Definitely worth the wait...

There are liner notes by both 'Mudcat' Ward and Sugar Ray. Mudcat sums it up well by stating, "...you'll find yourself thoroughly transported, by blues playing professionals, and finding multiple joys in the journey." Sugar Ray notes that "this collection represents the culmination of my past musical endeavors, a never-ending musical pilgrimmage." Let's all hope that it continues for many years to come...

If you're looking for hard pounding blues guitar then this CD is not for you. This is big band, blues, jazz, great vocals combined, often reminiscent of days past. If you like stellar musical performances with outstanding vocals, this one's a must have, a true keeper...the CD is fun to listen to, there is no need to skip any songs, so just sit back and let Sugar Ray and the Bluetones, Duke Robillard, Mike Welch, and as Ray notes a "killer" horn section entertain you with one of the top blues releases of 2007. Pick it up, and enjoy! And by all means if they are in your area, get out there to see/hear them -- they are as good live, maybe even better. And they are always avaialble to chat, sign autographs, etc. Don't skip/miss the opportunity to see and hear "some of the best musicians on this planet"...buy the CD, enjoy it, share it with friends. Yes, it's that good...

It may be cruel to dismiss Chris Duarte as just another Stevie Ray Vaughan wannabe, but it's accurate. There's not an original sound or sentiment on this debut album, right from the copped licks of opener "My Way Down" to the environmental cautions of the finale "Borrowed Love." Duarte is technically adept enough to get many of the late Vaughan's guitar mannerisms right, from his rich-but-brittle Stratocaster tone to the turnarounds he uses to set up his solos. He's a pallid vocalist, however, which doesn't help plead his case as an emerging talent. In fact, four years after this debut--which beat both Jonny Lang and Kenny Wayne Shepard to the record stores--Duarte has yet to make his mark. --Ted Drozdowski

SRV wannabe ? No baby. THE BEST SRV WANNABE ! I think this means a lot.

5 out of 5 stars Blisterin' Texas Blues.......2004-11-15

The comparsisons to Hendrix and Vaughan abound, but anyone who typecasts Duarte as a simple clone of those two godfathers of acid blues is simply short sighted.

Chris Duarte's first full-length album, *Texas Sugar* is astounding on many levels. Sure, it's hard-rocking blues. However, the funk and jazz influences color nearly all the tracks. Take something like "Big Legged Woman." Certainly, one can hear the blues influences, from the scorching guitar solos to the chordal structure. However, one would have to be tone deaf to miss the scratching, funky rhythm of the song. "Big Legged Woman" shares more in common with Wild Cherry or post-Bitch's Brew Miles than with Stevie Ray Vaughan.

Duarte reminds me of what Jimi Hendrix may have become: a restless experimenter who fuses jazz, funk, rock, blues, and acid rock with a stamp of originality that many, many musicians should envy. His playing is clean, but sometimes hidden behind a wall of effects and distortion. I'd like to hear an acoustic outing from Duarte.

The songs, however, are amazing. I love "My Way Down." It's a blues/rock/funk explosion with a guitar solo that soars above the stratosphere, makes a left at Neptune, and comes back home with alien knowledge of another world.

Buy this album. Also, check out "Tailspin Headwack."

4 out of 5 stars check out this man's guitar tone.......2003-12-26

I think you almost have to be a guitarist to really appreciate Chris Duarte. For me his tone alone is worth 4 stars. He gets the most exquisite Stratocaster tones I've ever heard on any recording, period. (Hey if anyone out there knows what kind of pickups he uses, let me know. I know about his effects, amps, etc, just no info on pups.) Even SRV wasn't this tone-sculptured. Aubrey Freed used to be my hero in this dept; now it's Duarte.

I like the songs on this CD, too, fairly good composition. I would give the CD five stars if it showed just a tad more originality, both compositionally and stylistically. But man, that tone -- I've played strats for 30 years and couldn't be more envious.

5 out of 5 stars TAKE IT FOR WHAT IT IS.......2003-09-28

First let me say I love this CD. At times he does sound like Stevie Ray, but so what! At times Stevie Ray sounded like Hendrix, should we crucify him for that? Everybody has influences. I love the blues but let's be honest, how many blues guitarists are actually doing something TOTALLY original that hasn't been done before? Chris Duarte is not the first musician to at times sound like someone else. I wish the production was a little beefier but I like this CD alot. In my book he's got nothing to apologize for.

5 out of 5 stars Impressive Debut From the Texas Guitarslinger.......2003-06-08

It's impossible to write a review of Chris Duarte without invocking the name of Stevie Ray Vaughan. Duarte, a fellow Texan, is obviously a disciple of the late, great guitarist. In fact, Duarte dedicates the nearly ten-minute instrumental "Shiloh" to Stevie and his brother Jimmie. But while Duarte may have been influenced by the Vaughan brothers, he is no imitator. Duarte's guitar playing is both fiery and inspired. His vocals are serviceable, but it's his guitar playing that brings me back to this album time and again. I caught him live a couple years ago and his performance was dazzling. This is an impressive debut. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

    4 out of 5 stars Zucchero's Greatest Hits.......2007-01-06

We bought this CD AFTER we had gotten a copy of his Zucchero and Friends CD. This CD has many of the same tracks as the "friends" CD - they are good, but the duets are actually better. We are surprized that Zucchero is not better known in the US as his music is great and we love his style. Anybody who likes something a little different would appreciate Zucchero's music, even the foreign language tracks. If you like this CD, you will like the duets CD even better. I would buy another Zucchero CD and have shared ours with friends who also liked it well enough to buy.

5 out of 5 stars Best of Zucchero.......2006-03-11

Original songs that you want to play over and over and over. Great album!

5 out of 5 stars You never go wrong with Zucchero.......2005-09-13

I can easily recommend this fine Italian musician/singer/composer! Zucchero is that incredible musical discovery still waiting to happen in America. He loves the blues, but he can rock with the best of them and play funky or Latin too. He sings both in Italian and English, even mixing them at times. The emotion of his singing is so moving that the first time I heard it I was hooked. The more I listen to his music, the more I want to listen to it, he is totally addicting. This is a fine collection of SOME of his best, and a good sampler to try him out. Trust me, buy ANYTHING by this musician, you will never go wrong.

5 out of 5 stars Music To My Ears.......2003-03-15

I heard a song by Zucchero a year ago and thought it was good then I heard My Love and I fell in love. Zucchero is so diverse that he can make you swoon over My love then get you up dancing with the next song. If you like REAL music with melodic sounds, something you can humm and keep with you then you have to have a Zucchero experience. You'll fall in love too...guranteed.

He weaves together Italian and English so well I don't even know that I don't understand what he's saying.

    Zucchero is a must have.

    5 out of 5 stars Zucchero-Greatest Hits.......2002-09-23

I can't get enough of this guy, he's unbelieveable and so far this is the second best. The best being "Shake".

I had been trying to get this album for quite some time and the wait was worth it.The album is more than I had antisipated as each and every number
was great. The muted trumpet of Clyde McCoy is absolutely the best I have ever heard, and I was amaized at the sound quality for something done in 1951.To anyone who enjoys jazz and particularly trumpet, I highly recomend
    this product.

I played our 78 of Sugar Blues over and over as a kid - until we finally broke it . Recently saw a commercial on TV featuring the song and it brought back memories of how enjoyable this music was. This is a great compilation of those memorable songs.

    Product Description

As both a soloist and former lead trumpet of the world-renowned Canadian Brass for five years, Jens Lindemann has developed a critically acclaimed career as an international virtuoso. This new solo CD is a perfect showcase for his talent. He is accompanied by pianists Jennifer Snow and Brad Ellis.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Solo Debut.......2006-09-12

Lindemann's musicality, technique, and showmanship is evident
here on a very high level. Of particular interest is
his very effective use of plunger to subtly modify his sound.
The Gershwin preludes are especially entertaining. He uses
the extreme high high register a bit more frequently than
I would wish, but with high range this strong, it's easy to
see why he would want to use it.

This is, overall, extremely musical playing. Minor quibbles
can be made about intonation in some spots, but the listener
will forgive these when the playing is so infectious and
the tone so fine. I found myself laughing on occasion because
I was having so much fun listening to what the artist was doing
with these pieces. It is apparent that Lindemann and his fine
accompanists were having a great time with this music. Buy this
    disc and you will too.

5 out of 5 stars First rate album!.......2006-03-06

Jens Lindemann really makes a name for himself with this album. Anyone who enjoys trumpet music will probably enjoy this. Jens is a true master at mixing jazz, pop and classical styles seamlessly. This album has a good mix of classical and jazz hits to suit anyone's taste. After first hearing Jens' beautiful tone when he played with the Canadian Brass, I was eagerly awaiting his first solo album. I had no idea his talent was so immense until I heard some of the songs on this album. His arrangement of Chopin's Etude No. 2 requires circular breathing for the entire piece. I think his variations on Amazing Grace are the best I've ever heard. There is even some insanely high stuff for those of you who like a little squealing now and then! ;)

    5 out of 5 stars Phenomenal Player!.......2005-12-01

Jens is one of the few trumpet players out there that can move with me a single note. There are some great tracks on this CD that showcase his technical brilliance, but most of the tracks show off his lyrical ability, especially the first track. My only personal complaint was with the choice of some of the 'pop' tracks - they just aren't really my kind of music, but Jens plays everything with wonderful clarity and fluidity (as expected).

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Highly enjoyable lascivious songs..........2007-07-19

Sugar In My Bowl gives us a great collection of eighteen songs from the 1920s, 1930s, 1940s and early 1950s. These songs all explore the theme of romance sung by some of the greatest female artists of the day. It's great to see how these songbirds used simple everyday words to convey romantic ideas to their public without being caught by the censors. Wow!

The legendary Bessie Smith begins the track set with "I Need A Little Sugar In My Bowl." Awesome! Bessie sings this bluesy number to a tee and she never misses a note! The piano accompaniment works well but it still lets Bessie's vocals remain squarely in the spotlight. "I Want A Tall Skinny Papa" by Sister Rosetta Tharpe sports a big band flavor with a great male backup chorus to make this number take flight! Sister Rosetta sings this with all her heart and it shows as you listen to "I Want A Tall Skinny Papa."

"Just Give Me A Man" from Mabel Scott does indeed offer romantic hope to all men as she sings of how she wants to spend time with just about any--or all--of the men she can get her hands on! What a hoot! Mabel sings very well and the musical accompaniment enhances "Just Give Me A Man." Awesome!

Some of the songs on this CD use certain words to be rather suggestive. Take a listen to "Sam The Hot Dog Man" by Lil Johnson with its great arrangement and "Hot Nuts (Get 'Em From The Peanut Man)." I think you can put two and two together for yourself. SMILE

There's also an interesting early recording by Dinah Washington entitled "My Lovin' Papa;" we see Dinah showcasing her talents as a first rate jazz singer as early as 1945. Great! Sister Rosetta Tharpe returns to perform again; this time she performs "Rock Me," an excellent tune indeed. Love that guitar intro!

One of the more recent numbers on this CD would be the superb "Rocket 69" performed so ably by Connie Allen with a backup chorus harmonizing to perfection! "Rocket 69" sports that early rock and roll flavor which works wonders for this awesome number. Give this one a listen and you'll love it--I am sure of it!

Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end. This one's gonna be tough because the last number on this CD uses explicit lyrics to explore the subject of love. Lucille Bogan sings "Shave 'Em Dry (Version 2)" with great energy and you can tell she's enjoying every minute of this lascivious song! The sound quality is poor but you'll be able to hear every last word Lucille sings.

The liner notes feature an informative essay by Neil Kellas; and the artwork reflects good judgment. There are beautiful photos of Dinah Washington, Bessie Smith, Lucille Bogan and more!

Hey, people are people and romance enters into all of our lives. I highly recommend this CD for fans of this type of music; and if you ever care to talk a walk on the wilder side of the street, this CD is just the ticket!

    Enjoy!
