Customer Reviews:
some brilliant renditions, but can't quite all mix together.......2006-10-19
I like the spirit of this album, which is to let the music of Kurt Weill attach itself to the many worlds it came from. This was classical music that also used elements of popular music at the time, all with a very dark and almost mechanical tone. So it would seem fitting to have exquisite voices like Teresa Stratas rub elbows with darker elements like Nick Cave in this collection. There are also the jazz influences developed by Charlie Haden and Betty Carter.
In all, there are some brilliant interpretations of Weill here. I am a fan of Cave's "Mack the Knife" and David Johansen's "Alabama Song," and how can someone NOT like Lotte Lenya herself on "Pirate Jenny" and the drolling of the immortal William S. Burroughs talking through "What Keeps Mankind Alive?"
But other tracks feel to be just too short of brilliance. I love that Lou Reed tries to turn "September Song" into a kind of rock ballad, almost a VU "It Was a Pretty Good Year," but the rendition seems a little short of energy and falls flat after a while. Elvis Costello, though magnificent as an overall artist, just doesn't bring new life to "Lost in the Stars."
Perhaps the problem in the end that the choices were a little too much of the Top 40 Weill (if there really can be such a term). These are songs that have for a long time been regarded as the best of Weill, and it might have furthered the purpose of his music to find new gems and bring them into the sunlight.
Cool and Camp.......2006-08-24
This is a very biased review- I originally had much of Weill's work on cassette tape- way back in the olden days- before CD's- so I am already very partial to many of the tracks on this CD- I would recommend it not only to Kurt Weill fans, and the fans of the various artists featured, but I would also strongly recommend this to anyone who likes artsy, camp, fun burlesque, Bohemian European stuff. The record, even though performed by contemporary artists still retains much of it's zeitgeist, it evokes the era in which Weill was writing and it rounds out any great eclectic record collection. It's a great musical discovery for fans of all sorts of genres, and EVERYONE should own at least one recorded arrangement of "Mack The Knife". (You know, for parties and stuff!)
September Song Music of Kurt Weill.......2006-08-22
Songs from the film-documentary done by various artists. Excellent choice if you like Mr Weill's music. I saw the film and always wanted the CD. Now I have and I recommend it highly.
It's a long time between January and December.......2004-06-11
Kurt Weill is one of those composers who juggles Jewish angst with Catholic guilt: and possibly vice versa. As a collection, it is nonpareil. Each interpretation becomes a definitive reading of the "song". Lord, it is one of the best assemblies of contemporary artists going. Lou couldn't be better; Ms O'Hara, in fine form, performs her deranged puppet-dance to the X. OK. An unknown. Roping-in, such a postmodern figure as, well, you-know-who, to orate Weill's lyrics is never less than exceptional. An amazing collection. Is there a DVD?

Ain't we Hip?!!?.......2003-07-23
This is the avant version of these songs, everything done with that Downtown fingers-across-the-blackboard screech. They even got Johanson doing it, which is no less than amazing. The sole exception is the Persuasions' "O Heavenly Salvation", but one song does not an album make.
The mystery here is that there's a perfectly good compilation from the 80s, "Lost in the Stars: the Music of Kurt Weill", featuring many of the same songs--and, if I'm not mistaken some of the same performers. That's the one you want. Too bad it's OP.

It is a disgrace that there are no lyrics enclosed. This is NOT a budget cd.
Superb.......2007-06-27
This is one of the best recordings of Kurt Weill ever and one of the best recordings of the magnificent Teresa Stratas.
Stratas is good. Others are better........2005-10-08
'The Unknown Kurt Weill' sung by Maria Stratas is a fine recording. The problem is that there are many fine recordings of Kurt Weill songs done by Lotte Lenya and several other Weill specialists, lead by Ute Lemper and Gisela May.
So, this album may be valuable if indeed it included a lot of numbers which do not appear on other recordings, but that is not the case either. On my collection of about ten (10) disks, not including recordings from specific shows, I have other recordings of at least half of these songs.
I really think Weill's legacy is better served by recordings who do his complete works rather than 'interesting' selections of his songs.
This is a good, enjoyable recording. I listen to it at least once a year, but it is not as good as other Weill records.
STRATAS WALKS THE RAZORýS EDGEý.......2003-07-11
I don't review many classical recordings - but this one, from 1981, has always been one of my favorite Weill collections, and after reading the rather negative comments from one reviewer, I felt I had to add my two cents' worth to the fray. Everyone is of course entitled to his or her own opinion - and music in SUCH a subjective topic that this should go without saying.
I've been a bug admirer of Weill's work - particularly his collaborations with Brecht - for years. His songs tread the thin, tricky line between classical and cabaret more daringly that most. Brecht's collaborations with Hanns Eisler, for example, are closer to the theatrical than are Weill's. In my humble opinion, Stratas walks this `razor's edge' very nimbly on this recording - her voice is obviously a finely trained instrument, but she is also able of conveying a lot of feeling and emotion with these lyrics. Her choice - or perhaps the producer's - of accompanying here with only a piano is a good one. Woitach does a fine job - and the recording itself is crystal-clear.
My only real complaint with the cd version of this album is the size of the type in the liner notes - Nonesuch could have easily `sprung' for a lengthier booklet, to allow us `old fogies' the opportunity to read it without a magnifier, and also to include the lyrics and translations. I can't recall for certain if the lp version offered the lyrics, but I believe it did. At any rate, these complaints are indeed small ones - this is a timeless, beautiful recording, and one that any fan of Weill's work should at least hear.
Leave Weill enough alone ..........2000-07-08
I don't know just what Lotte Lenya said on her deathbed, but I personally feel that other singers carry the torch for Kurt Weill as well or better than Teresa Stratas. Of all my Weill albums, this one gives me the least pleasure. The German is bad, the interpretations are shrill and forced. Some of the tracks are almost unlistenable. Was Teresa Stratas simply the first world class singer to rediscover this body of work? Was Lenya giving her a sympathy vote? I love Stratas' singing elsewhere, in the Boulez recording of Lulu (for example), but she is no good here.
For a newcomer to Weill, I highly recommend Anna Sophie Von Otter (excellent in every way) or even Ute Lemper's entertaining album. For that matter, go back and pick up Lotte Lenya's remastered Threepenny Opera -- it doesn't get much better than that. This Weill album, however, is tellingly named: it deserves to be unknown.

Customer Reviews:
Even my kid likes this!.......2005-11-07
This is an amazing collection of songs, all performed with such skill that even my 8-year-old son likes this CD. Brahms and Beatles, Mozart and Ellington, there is something here for everyone. And thank you, thank you, thank you for "Bassoonist's Holiday."
Bassoon Me!.......2004-08-09
I delight in the bassoon! What a unique and great sound, throaty and thrillingly coarse, yet soaring to sound at times like sax, like oboe, like cello, like a bunch of bassoonatics!
This is delightful collection of musical styles played by this innovative and talented quartet. Choosing to select pieces that are not typically of the bassoon repertoire, we go from Waltz to Gershwin to Broadway to Motzart to Lennon/McCartnye to Sibelius to most of us unknowns such as Mitchell Clarke to Duke Ellington.
All played with passion and gusto and excellent tonality, phrasing and tempo.
Bassoon Me again!
Brilliant Bassoonastics.......2003-09-27
This would have to be the best bassoon ensemble cd on the market. The arrangements are stylish and clever, and the performances brilliant! Fraser Jackson must be the most accomplished contrabassoonist I have ever head. This cd is a must for any bassoonists collection be you amateur or proffessional.
OUTSTANDING QUARTET.......2002-04-14
This disc is really superb!!! Not only is the playing at an extremely high level by the group, the arrangements are also outstanding. The Brahms is abolutely beautiful. The group goes from lightning fingers bravura to sweet soulful singing. It is a joy to listen to again and again.
Simply fantastic!.......2001-10-26
I simply love the Caliban Quartet! They breath new life into bassoons! The way they bring out the music is simply magical. Not only do they sound good, their technical abilities are simply amazing!

Je Ne T'Aime Pas .......2006-03-02
if i had to pick a favorite song on this cd, that would be the one...i heard this one more than the others. " one life to live," is superb...she did all these songs in one take ! and the passion and romance is undeniable...i had never listened to cabaret before this. i became a fan.
Superb musicianship!.......2002-01-19
This CD is thoroughly enjoyable. O'Callaghan's passionate interpretations of these cabaret/parlour style songs are never less than convincing in their colourful delivery. My particular favorite's are two of the Weill numbers: "Je ne t'aime pas", which is so full of heart-wrenching angst, and "Youkali", because it is so rarely heard. The lesser known works of Poulenc and Satie are also each sparkling little treasures. The musicians all seem to "gel" together beautifully, and one can imagine that they had a really great time recording this disc together. Fantastic artistry!
An excellent recording by a fast-rising cabaret star.......1998-11-04
This first CD by the talented soprano Patricia O'Callaghan is truly excellent. Ms. O'Callaghan has the rare ability to mesmerize the listener through her intuitive and expressive vocal instrument. Her voice and vocal style are unique..she imitates no one. This is the sign of a true artist. The selections, ranging from Poulenc to Weill to a rarely heard gem by George Gershwin, are performed with meticulous attention to detail. Nuances, articulation of the text combined with superb vocal technique are very evident. If you haven't yet purchased Youkali, put it on your definite "to do" list tomorrow!!!

HIDDEN JEWELS.......2006-04-22
Gianluigi Trovesi (clarinets) & Gianni Coscia (accordion), Round About Weill (5*)
Gianluigi Trovesi (clarinets) & Gianni Coscia (accordion), In Cerca di Cibo (5*)
Gianluigi Trovesi is a hidden jewel in today's jazz. Perhaps he's undersung because he's Italian: he performs and records in Italy, not in American jazz clubs or for a central American jazz label. Maybe, on these two albums, it's because some afficionados look down on the "European" clean jazz typical to ECM records. Above all, I suspect it's because the music he plays --though not the way he plays it-- is hard to classify.
Take these two albums. Are they jazz? Italian folk music? Composed or 'classical' music? Trovesi and Coscia mesh as well as any duo in jazz --think of the exquisite music made by duos such as Charlie Haden and Kenny Baron, Jim Hall and Ron Carter, or Gary Burton and Chick Corea on Crystal Silence. But the music Torvesi and Coscia produce on these two albums is devilishly difficult to classify. Sometimes they settle for composed lines, heartbreaking melodies played simply, simply. At other times, they clearly improvise, but seldom on recognmizable jazz lines. They are demons --Trovesi especially-- at quoting wildly from other pieces: they close one piece on the Weill album with "Blue Moon," another time with (almost) "Frere Jacques." But it's jazz nonetheless, played by two hyper-alert and super-intelligent musicians who mine their musical ancestry to consummate effect.
Of the two albums, my wife has a very slight preference for the Weill album, which is made up half of tunes written by Weill and most of the rest of the artists' own tunes that fit the mood of Weill. Both clarinet and acordion capture well the cabaret atmosphere of so many Weill tunes, including different versions of "Alabama Song" and "Tango Ballade."
On the Weill album, Trovesi continues his fascination with John Lewis's "Django," the moving funeral dirge for French gypsy guitarist Django Reinhardt first recorded by the Modern Jazz Quartet. (Trovesi plays "Django" on In Cerca di Cibo and quotes it on Around Small Fairy Tales.) This is appropriate because in some respects, Trovesi is like Lewis, though much hotter and more earthy at times. Both composed and have led groups that played music that critics saw as too 'classical.' Both used non-jazz idioms for jazz purposes.
I own five albums by Trovesi now, which is all I've been able to find and buy to date. Around Small Fairy Tales features Trovesi playing his own compositions with a string orchestra. From G to G and Fugace feature his octet, which sounds at times like a slightly woozy stepchild of the great George Russell experimental groups of the very early sixties. In an age that slights the clarinet as a solo instrument, Trovesi is arguably the best clarinetist in jazz, a major soloist and melodist.
I love this man and he's never sounded better than playing with Coscia. Needless to say, these two ECM albums are impeccably engineered for sound.

Innovative and dreamlike.......2005-10-24
The two reed instruments complement each other wonderfully in the tonal range of the human voice. They are smoothly blended even in stacatto pieces. Coscia reminds me of Dino Saluzzi, not as expressive, yet more rhythmically emphatic than Saluzzi and with much more variation in style. Trovesi's clarinet has a beautiful, liquid sound. The music varies from oom-pah folk to hypnotic wandering, all of it inventive. There are no cliches here. Reviewed well in Downbeat, but is it jazz? There is a classical foundation, but the rhythms, harmonies and melodies are all over the map. Even so, there is a certain sameness that sets in after a while, due to the limited pallette.
This is amazing.......2005-07-02
First, this CD is impressible-only two instruments but the music they play is incredible. The music in this CD-slow and fast-emotional.Amazing.And again...highly recommended!
magical music.......2005-05-03
Like this duo's ECM release "In cerca di cibo", this disc has a wonderful old world feel. The combination of trovesi's clarinets and Coscia's accordian suite Weil's compostions well. Beatuiful playing and recording quality. Highly recommended.

Uruguayan pianist Polly Ferman has made a specialty of the piano music of South America. Her previous CDs of music by Ernesto Nazareth and Ernesto Lecuona were thoroughly delightful. Now she offers a wide-ranging program of mostly brief, dance-based piano music in forms from South America, although written by composers from many countries. You have to follow the track listing inside the booklet (the listing on the tray card is virtually illegible) to find out whether the delightful piece you are hearing was written by Gottschalk, Chabrier, Stravinsky, Weill, or Ginastera. But whatever the music, it's all entertaining and sometimes (as with Piazzolla) considerably more than that. Ferman's playing encompasses all these styles convincingly, and the recording conveys the piano sound with considerable realism. Romeo needs to clean up its presentation; aside from the badly-designed tray card, the pianist's biography comes right in the middle of the program notes on the music. But for its contents, this is the most entertaining piano collection since Gloria Cheng's Piano Dance and it's highly recommended. --Leslie Gerber

From Africa to Cuba and from Cuba to Argentina.......2006-03-16
I don't mean to be over zealous with my Cuban/Spanish Moorish heritage, and I agree with my Argentinean counterpart soldiers who are here in Eastern Europe with me serving as peace keepers with NATO, that certain things have to be clear and made public, so that people can be educated. This is the purpose of this review. This CD is an excellent recording of the different styles of Habaneras, Milongas and Tangos, they all are related. The roots are from Africa/Cuba brought to Argentina by Cuban sailors. The great German writer Rodolfo A. Windhausen states in one of his research report on the roots of the Tangos the following: "I learned about the Cuban roots of Tango. The Habanera rhythm was brought to Argentina by Cuban sailors in the nineteenth century. In fact, there is still one Milonga in Havana, once a week, for a small Tango community". If you want to hear Habaneras check the CD " Habaneras By Maria Teresa Vera" and Habaneras by Marco Rizo on both of these CD's you will hear the roots of Tangos played by one of the most respected Cuban guitar player(Maria Teresa Vera) of all times. I first heard of the Habaneras when I was young. My father would play them on his guitar while my mother would join him in singing the songs. My favorite was "twenty years" which is a classic! This is a good starting point for those who enjoy the Tangos, Milongas and the Habaneras interpreted here by this great pianist from Uruguay. Che, buy it, you will not regret it! It's part of your rich Argentinean culture.
Habaneras, Milongas, Tangos.......2001-11-04
This is delightful! The pianist is superb in her interpretation of the pieces. The music takes you away to another world.

as good as it gets.......2002-10-04
No one will ever interperate Kurt Weill like this genious lady. She has the most captivating voice in show business! I could never give a good enough review to this excellent album. I wish everyday that I could've seen this show live.
Other albums of her's to buy:
La Boheme with Leonard Bernstein, Jerry Hadley, and Angelina Reaux and Frida, an album in which she portrays the famous artist Frida Kahlo.
Love this lady,
Zac Bush
Kurt Weill Interpreter.......2002-05-20
A singer's singer. This lady is an excellent interpreter of Kurt Weill. She has a an expressive classically trained big voice. Most of the famous Kurt Weill's are on here arranged in a song cycle... A woman in dark glasses in a fur coat checks in to a hotel room, sits on the bed and opens her suitcase... and we are shown through song the meagre contents of her life...
Good companion artists are Patricia O'Callaghan and Ute Lemper.

Intimate with Larmore.......2005-03-22
The CD or DVD for this concert will show the fine art of recital and Larmore sure knows how to give a good one! She and Palloc build to a wonderful payoff and during the way we get to see what a versatile, talented, and smart performer Larmore is. She totally understands Weill and gives a heartbreaking rendition of "Je ne t'aime pas" - I get chills everytime I hear it. The same for Quilters "Love's Philosophy".
Fans of La Larmore will not be let down. Those not familiar with this great Mezzo will understand what all the fuss is about. Brava Jennifer! Keep the great music coming.
