A good collection of Scobey's best.......2007-02-03

If you're looking for a collection of some of Bob Scobey standards, this is a good place to start. Featured are some of the tunes most identified with the Frisco Band, "Silver Dollar", "Ace in the Hole", and two of my favorites--"Peoria" and "Someday Sweetheart" (Louie Armstrong composition). On all of these Clancy Hayes does a tremendous job and earns recognition as one of the best vocalists of all time. No less than Bing Crosby salutes him. I had occasion to meet both Bob and Clancy when I was in Chicago and recommend this CD highly.

Scobey's Frisco Favorites Featuring Clancy Hayes.......2000-09-09

Anytime a group like Bob Scobey on trumpet, Jack Buck on trombone, and Clancy Hayes on banjo and vocals gets together you just know that fans of Dixieland jaazz are in for a treat. When you add the smooth and innovative improvisations of clarinetist Bill Napier as featured on cuts 5 - 18, it's hard to imagine a better combination of creativity and hard driving Dixieland. This is certainly evident on cut 5, Battle Hymn of the Republic, which gets the latter part of the album off to a flying start. Included on the disc are eighteen selections of all time favorite blues and Dixieland numbers. The sound on cuts 1 - 4 is of somewhat lower quality than that on the balance of the disc. This, however, does nothing to detract from the overall quality and enjoyment of the recording. If you like great Dixieland jazz, this is a disc you should seriously consider adding to your collection.

Although the music was great, I am not much for vocals with Dixieland music. Do you have any Scobey music without the v ocals?

Bob Scoby's Frisco Band, The Scoby Story Vol. 2.......2000-12-12

This is a companion with Vol. 1, which are reissues of the Scoby hits on Good Time Jazz LPs. Scoby carried on the San Francisco revival of traditional jazz started by Lu Watters, kept going by Turk Murphy. Scoby was a top trumpet and had great Frisco musicians working with him. The band became popular because of Clancy Hayes vocals, and this CD has some wonderful Hayes vocals. It's a shame that recordings in those days were kept to about 3 minutes each tune, as it would be great to hear more of the musicians doing solo work. This is a must for your trad jazz collection.

Early Scobey Chestnuts.......2007-02-03

I got a chance to meet Bob Scobey and Clancy Hayes when I was a student at Northwestern University and began collecting Frisco Band sides about that time. Some of these early Good Time Jazz records show the hard driving rhythm and some do not feature Clancy Hayes on vocal. "Coney Island Washboard" has both Scobey and Clancy singing and is one of their best recordings. Bob resurrects many of the Lu Watters Jazz Band standards. This is an excellent introduction to the Bob Scobey musical arrangements.

Wonderful Dixieland.......2005-05-25

I really enjoy several kinds of music including Dixieland. And when it comes to Dixieland I think Bob Scoby with Clancy Hayes doing vocal can't be beat. When I was younger I had several Bob Scoby 45's that I thought were great. In recent years I have looked for Bob Scoby CD's that included my favorite songs. "South", "Chicago", "Sailing Down Chesapeake Bay", "Melancholy" mostly without success until this album. It has them all. Bob Scoby & Clancy Hayes seem to have the right formula together. If you enjoy Dixieland I recommend this album.

Excellent goodtime music.......2000-11-02

This rather brief CD (just 35 minutes), a straight reissue of an LP) gives listeners a good example of the playing of trumpeter Bob Scobey. Taken from his earliest period as a bandleader, these Dixieland performances also feature trombonist Jack Buck, either Darnell Howard, Albert Nicholas or George Probert on clarinet, pianists Burt Bales or Wally Rose and banjoist Clancy Hayes who also takes a few vocals. Excellent goodtime music. -

brings back wonderful memories.......1999-04-21

During the late fifties and early sixties I went to school in Md and used to listen to the Harley show on WBAL. Harley played songs from his extensive collection of jazz, blues, and dixieland His theme song "Sailing down the Chesapeake Bay" was taken from this album and he drew heavily from the rest of the album in many of his shows. Harley moved to a different station in the 70's and I never heard his show again. I would love to buy some tapes of his show but I contacted WBAL and they couldn't help me locate any. Back to the album It is full of happy foot stomping music and I recommend it highly.

:"Trumpeter Bob Scobey's Dixieland bands in the 1950s were pretty consistent. This CD reissue brings back one of Scobey's better dates. After a weak start on a somewhat square version of "Battle Hymn of the Republic," the remainder of the program mixes together Dixieland standards (including "Sweet Georgia Brown" and "Bill Bailey") with a few obscurities ("Parsons, Kansas Blues" and "Friendless Blues"). Co-starring with Scobey is one of the top trad jazz singers, Clancy Hayes, who is far superior to most "musician vocalists." Also well-featured are clarinetist Bill Napier and trombonist Jack Buck"
