This is Better than Power, Corruption and Lies !!! Peter Hook steals the show.......2007-04-11
I agree with most reviewers that the track "All day long" is the Best on this album but I Also feel this album has the best version of Bizarre Love Triangle cuz you can Finally Really hear Peter hooks infectious bass line wich Always carried this tune in my opinion !!! The other tracks hold up a lot better than the tracks on Power, Corruption and Lies and this album seems more alternative than that album and Not so Stuck in the 80's as the latter !!! This is my 3rd favorite new order full length album. Peter Hook on bass Really shines and carries this album to its Zenith musically~ Thanks Hooky :)
(three and a half stars) the last of the pre-Substance albums.......2006-06-20
The name of New Order's "Brotherhood" perfectly matches the optimistic nature of this album, probably the band's most buoyant release, and quite a departure from their previous album "Low-Life" (a good name for that album as well). "Brotherhood" weighs in as one of the band's most consistent albums -- really, if I were rating each song separately, I would give each either three or four stars. The classic song on "Brotherhood," is, of course, "Bizarre Love Triangle," but I actually prefer the slightly different version on "Substance," the band's next release, which was sort of a greatest hits album with additional previously unreleased material.
Nothing on "Brotherhood" truly "wows" me, like, for instance, "Age of Consent," "True Faith," "Regret," or "Crystal;" but, then again, I'm not tempted to use my "skip" button on any song (perhaps Bernard Sumner didn't need to giggle quite so much on the closer "Every Little Counts"). The opener "Paradise," has a riff similar to The Cure's "Doing the Unstuck," which simply adds to the obvious connection between these two bands (e.g. "Just Like Heaven" and "All the Way;" "A Forest" and "Sunrise;" "In Between Days" and "Dreams Never End").
I've now reviewed all of New Order's studio albums. Here's my list of most to least favorite:
1. Get Ready
2. Republic
3. Waiting for the Sirens' Call
4. Power, Corruption and Lies
5. Movement
6. Substance
7. Brotherhood
8. Low-Life
9. Technique
Obviously, I'm one of those fans who prefers the lusher more complex sounds of New Order's later albums, as opposed to their earlier Techno/Brit/80s pop. However, even "Technique," though on the bottom of my list, is, in my opinion, quite good. I'm definitely looking forward to Bernard and Co.'s next album, as well as to seeing them in concert.
Worth buying for BLT alone!.......2005-12-28
Having loved the BLT on Substance I had no idea that it would be a different version on this album: Absolutely gorgeous song.
Rest of the album isn't bad: My favourite other track is 'weirdo' the guitar trills and harmony are simple but sometimes humblingly beautiful.
Definitely Worth a Listen.......2005-10-26
New Order had already released three fantastic albums prior to this 1986 release: MOVEMENT (1981), POWER CORRUPTION, & LIES (1983), and LOW-LIFE (1985). All three were potent, revolutionary records. Brotherhood retains some of that experimental/indie alternative/synthrock pop (not one adjective accurately describes New Order's particular brand of music, so several must suffice); one may also consider it a return to roots, so to speak, for it has several entirely guitar, bass, & drums driven pieces. However, BROTHERHOOD has a curious dichotomy that splits the album roughly into two halves, one alt rock the other synth. Stand-out tracks include the well-known and magnificent "Bizarre Love Triangle" (which sounds much better in this simple, heavenly form rather than its hideous 12" mix), the angsty, unrequited "Paradise", the slightly Eastern "Angel Dust", and the synthesized & orchestral "All Day Long" (which would have been far better as an instrumental, in my opinion, for the lyrics are trite and cringe-inducing). The alt rock tracks (from "Weirdo" to "Way of Life") are actually rather energetic and upbeat with decent lyrics--I don't understand why everyone rags on these tracks for being "boring" or "unlistenable." I find them a fresh change of pace for the band. The final track, "Every Little Counts", serves as an example of the rampant drug use Bernard Sumner must have gone through when he penned this album--the lyrics are laughable (even Barney laughs at himself during it!), and the music is only so-so.
In conclusion, I recommend this album to any fan of New Order. Be warned, though, that the majority of this album is not stylistically similar to "Bizarre Love Triangle." Perhaps that's not such a bad thing after all.
Contains my all-time-personal-fav- New Order tune . . ........2005-06-15
. . . and that would be "All Day Long." The track absolutely soars. Getting my vote for New Order's most musical song, it features tuneful guitars and lush orchestral treatments. Bernard Sumner's subdued delivery avoids exposing his vocal limitations.
The tracks I also like a lot: "Paradise" (laid-back rocker, twisty and sexy), "Weirdo" (rocking, cool, even though Sumner's voice is overextended), "Bizarre Love Triangle" (one of their best melodies, great lyrics) and "Angel Dust" (kinda frantic tune with some strange Middle Eastern-style undercurrent). All of them are dance-worthy except "Weirdo," "Bizarre Love Triangle" being the big hit (deservedly so). "Broken Promise" is pretty good/OK. My copy of BROTHERHOOD also has "State of the Nation," not their strongest song but pretty trippy and upbeat. To me, it has sort of an "international espionage" vibe to it. I personally have no use for the rest of the songs, all of which are acoustic. Nothing against acoustic songs, but these particular ones suck (IMHO).
I've always been strangely attracted to New Order, even though I don't always appreciate their "disco" tendencies or dance music in general. Their music often seems cold (in a good way). It's not the most melodious, but it's got cool atmosphere and their rhythms often suck me in. I also like parts of LOW-LIFE, but BROTHERHOOD sounds a little less stuck in the 80s.
One additional note: I actually love good lyrics and I especially love it when the music compliments or enhances them in some way. But I generally don't listen to New Order for the lyrics; sometimes they're good but New Order can get kinda lazy in this department, admittedly (their latest SIREN'S CALL has some particularly cringe-worthy examples). So I don't even care what "All Day Long" is about and I don't hear any words that bother me anyway. Bernard Sumner's singing is usually the last thing I pay attention to. Peace!

Blazing Latin Rock.......2007-01-29
The Del Castillo brothers are fantastic guitarists. Fusing flamenco and rock rhythms, they offer intense and often very dancable songs sung passionately by the fantastic singer alex Ruiz. On this, their 3rd album, they cut back on the instrumentals and feature more singing, some in English. Willie Nelson guests on one song,"I never cared for you".I saw them live last year and picked this disc up after the show. If they come to a club near you, see them! They are fantastic live. They are also featured on the "once upon a time in Mexico" soundtrack and the "chingon" disc.
much more fire, temperament and passion..........2006-11-12
The best what to Latin music at the moment has to offer. Music with high electricity and tension, burning and passionate guitar play, a virtuoso voice and the whole coated with a being intoxicating rhythm. Latin Music of finest ones. Very sadly that one cannot experience Del Castillo in Germany on the stage and not receive your CD.
Amazing, just amazing..........2006-08-22
There's no doubt about it, these guys are about to become a phenomenon. A latin group that sings mainly in Spanish, but that reaches you even if you don't speak a word. That's real passion.
The singing on this CD will move you from joy to tears and back again, the guitar playing will astound you, and the rhythms will touch your soul. Sound too good to be true? Believe me...I haven't done it justice!
Incredible!.......2006-06-17
I had never heard of Del Castillo until a few days ago when they appeared at the Pittsburgh Art Festival. I can honestly say that they are by far one of the best bands I have ever seen. The stage presence is spectacular, the songs are terrific, and the guitar playing is indescribable. I promptly purchased this CD at the show and I love it. I am eagerly awaiting the other two previous CDs. I can't rave enough about Del Castillo. I hope they get the fame and recognition that they deserve as they far surpass the popular bands that we typically hear all over the radio (and television) waves.

Superb music.......2000-03-30
I fell in love with one of these songs included in a Celtic collection and the album has more than lived up to my high expectations. The range of musical styles and virtuousity of this musician is staggering. It's one of my all-time favorite albums. The songs are all traditional, but "tradition" does not equal "stale and lifeless"; Nunez respects tradition enough to give it new life. Highly recommended. I'm eagerly waiting for more from him.
Carlos Nunez: One of the worlds pre-eminent pipers.......1999-02-23
I saw Carlos in concert with the Chieftains in Richmond VA last year, and was absolutly mesmerized. I immediatly added "Brotherhood of Stars" to my (complete) Chieftains collection. Carlos has collaborated on several of the Chieftains CDs, (he is sometimes referred to as the seventh Chieftain). If you are a Celtic music fan, or a Chieftains fan, (or a fan of pipe music in general) then you owe yourself the pleasure of hearing Carlos Nunez's "Brotherhood of Stars", it is truly amazing. Additionally, give Carlos's participation on the Chieftains "Santiago" a listen, I promise you will be completly taken by the mixture of the gaita and uillean pipes, pure listening magic.
Nuñez breathes new life into the celtic music of Galicia.......1999-02-16
Carlos Nuñez demonstrates his skills in this enjoyable album of contemporary Galician music. He is considered in Galicia the best gaitero (Galician bagpiper) in the world, and he showcases his talents using the gaita and also the recorder. His abilities on the Galician bagpipe (gaita) are remarkable, and the sweet melodies are quite moving. "The Brotherhood of the Stars" should not be held as an album of typical Galician folk music. There are however wonderful tracks which do exibit beautifully performed examples of Galicia folk culture (especially Negra Sombra, Os Gaiteiros da Noite, and Cantigas). Definitely a must-buy. Notable as well for the collaborations with many prominent world musicians, including Luz Casal, Dulce Pontes, Kepa Junkera, The Chieftans, Ry Cooder, Wenceslao "Polo" Cabezas, and many more.
Brilliant.......1998-11-10
I purchased this CD at the recommendation of my Spanish friends in Madrid -- they said it was their favorite; it has since become mine. The music recreates an authentic Galician atmosphere - especially track four Negra Sombra -- the voice of Luz Casal deserves to be heard.
Hearing the gaita played is an auditory experience (it is closely related to the Scottish bagpipes but sounds less strident) and the rest of the wind instruments are superb! Talk about dexterity.
This added to a mixed Spanish / Celtic sound (the Celts stopped in Galicia on their way to wherever they finally ended) makes this a wonderful CD that will delight anyone adventurous enough to give it a chance.

Customer Reviews:
The Doobies' Reunion Was Definitely Worth The Effort.......2007-04-25
BROTHERHOOD proves that the Doobie Brothers' reunion was definitely worth the effort. This album includes the hard-rocking "Divided Highway", arguably the band's best song since the STAMPEDE album, as well as the crunching "Dangerous." This CD proves that, despite years of Michael McDonald, the band could successfully recapture the gritty ambience of the early days. The surviving members' belief that the young Auistralian tourist jailed in Indonesia since 2005 for drug-smuggling was unjustly convicted makes BROTHERHOOD an essential purchase for both your ears AND your conscience.
The Doobies keep on rollin'.......2004-11-04
Before this year, the last album I bought from the Doobie Brothers was Minute By Minute. I was very skeptical to buy anything new because I thought the band was defunct. Imagine my surprise to find that since their breakup, they have put out three new albums! OK, I was still skeptical. Was this another band with a few new people thrown at it to keep the name alive to sell more albums? Well, I am happy to report that the answer is NO! This is the Doobies! An excellent new album by an everlasting band! The sound first caught me off guard because it is different than the original Doobies sound. However, after listening closely, I would rank Brotherhood with any other Doobie Brothers album. I love it! There is a lot of variety in the music on this album. From the pulse pounding beat of `Dangerous' to the very soulful `Rollin' On'. If you are a Doobie Brothers fan, you will love this album. Just don't expect to find the old Doobie's sound.
A Sonic Delight.......2004-09-08
As a thirty year fan of the Doobies I'd been a bit dissapointed by "Brotherhood" and "Cycles" from years back. I pretty much figured that the Doobies had run their course. Boy was I wrong. Sibling Rivalry is one of their best efforts ever. Crisp acoustic guitar, sweet fiddle, perfect percussion and overall groove remind me of the DB synergy of old. The grey hair may have slowed their tempo a bit but they have put down some great tracks on this one. As an added bonus for those audio snobs out there... this is absolutely the best recorded Doobies album and ever, probably one of best sound recordings so far this decade. They've got me looking forward to their next record. Safe to say... the Doobies are aging well.
Remember when they were a rock band?.......2003-09-27
Capitalizing on the success of 1989's "Cycles," the Doobies followed with this set. While "Dangerous" made the only real inroads on radio. There are enough worthwhile tracks here to justify this as a completion to your Doobies collection. It may take a couple of listens before you're fully into this one, but take the time, it's well worth it.

I wanna listen it a lot of times a day.......2005-09-22
I bought "Brotherhood" when it was released (10 years ago) and I still listen it almost everyday (And when I do it I listen about 3 times a day!!).It's impossible to bore. It's a wonderfull album.
I wouldn't sell mine by $10.000.000
GREAT R&B ALBUM!.......2005-08-09
I'd originally bought this album for the song "WHY", which is just a drop dead gorgeous soulful ballad written by Babyface. It features 3T's mega star uncle, Michael, who's soft sweet voice makes for great background vocals, but the rest of the album was actually very good too. This a good soulful R&B album & it's gem here are it's ballads. "24/7", "sexual attention" & "tease me" are great for getting you in a passionate mood. There vocals are smooth like silk & together, sound even better! In "Anything", they plead that they would do anything to keep a lover by their side. "I Need You" is a heartfelt tribute to their mother & Michael also shows up on this track toward the end with a gospel like intensity. The vocals are excellent & they're some downright great songs here. I would definitely recommend this album to R&B lovers!
Great album!.......2005-07-19
This is such a great, classic album! The songs demonstrate the soulful Jackson vocals that 3T has inherited. The songs are a nice change from all the other R&B songs which talk about sex and women degradation. Great! You got to get this!
GREAT!.......2005-06-21

Awesome album from head to tail!!!.......2005-04-18
Strange Brotherhood is by far the best NMA album. Raw, simple and yet incredibly elaborated and beautiful. The melodies are delightful and support perfectly the strong content of the lyrics. All songs in this album are great and you can listen to it from beggining to end without the minimum sense of monotony. It's really cool that this album is now available in America. Give it a try, you will love it from the first time.

Sunshine Pop!!.......2005-06-21
Best known in the USA for their hit UNITED WE STAND, this group at first was led by the eternally youthful voice of Tony Burrows. Later on, they reformed under Tony Hiller as a more ABBAesque Pop group, won Eurovision (as noted above) and were very, very popular round the world. If you haven't heard them beyond UNITED WE STAND, pick up this collection! You won't be disappointed, especially if you're a big ol' ABBA fan. Nifty stuff that will lift your spirit and make you smile!
Session group turned into Eurovision winners.......1999-07-06
In August 1969 five session singers were invited to form a new session group. Main singer was Tony Burrows of Ivy League and Flowerpot Men fame. The first success came with the second single United We Stand. This CD collects together the three US hits of the session group plus the only US hit of the group that was the face of the session group in concert during 1971-1973 and that would become the second outfit of the group, the Eurovision winning song Save Your Kisses For Me. The rest of the songs are a mix of songs from this second outfit 1974-1980. This outfit is still on tour at the end of the century
A good bouncy selection of seventies pop.......1999-05-14
Most of the groups hits are included on this CD,plus a few album tracks and a couple of previously unreleased tracks. Some of the tracks are a bit dodgy, but on the whole,a good collection of singalong pop songs. If you like Abba you'll like this,if you're in motorhead, then you shouldn't be reading this review!

Album Description
Reissued 1971 album. One of South Africa's most distinguished Jazz pianist McGregor, an ex member of the Bluenotes, released the LP in 1970 on RCA's neon label. Assisting him on the six-featured tracks were the likes Dudu Pukwana, Harold Beckett and Louis Moholo, in other words the finest jazz musicians of the late 60's.

Gorgeous.......2007-07-10
I can't imagine anybody not loving this music at first listen. Comparisons to Mingus are very apt, as this music not only slashes, bubbles, sings and rumbles: it also also possesses an elegance that comes right out of Ellington. Dudu Pukwana and Mongezi Feza play magnificently, McGregor was a wonderful composer/arranger/pianist and the band includes extremely accomplished soloists, many of whom are content to play a purely supportive role. This is one of the most beautiful - and most important - big-band jazz albums, period. Get it before it becomes ridiculously expensive again!
Stunning.......2001-10-12
This great album by a legendary band has long been unobtainable, vinyl copies change hands at high prices. The music is similar to some of Mingus' work, but with the township jive feel replacing the funky gospel of Mingus. The soloists are 1st rate, Dudu Puckwana and Mongezi Feza stand out. This is passionate music played from the heart by an extraordinary band at its peak. Bravo Chris Mcgregor!
Joyful Noises.......2001-03-17
One of the absolute key documents of British jazz (or indeed post-Ornette jazz of any nationality), this is the 1970 Joe Boyd-produced debut album by the big band formed by the exiled South African pianist and composer Chris McGregor. Basically an extension of his working band the Blue Notes (from whose ranks appear trumpeter Mongezi Feza, altoist Dudu Pukwana, tenorman Ronnie Beer and drummer Louis Moholo, with fellow SA expatriate Harry Miller on bass) utilising the finest cutting-edge British players of the time. The sax section is completed by the "SOS" team, i.e. John Surman, Mike Osborne and Alan Skidmore; from the Keith Tippett Group come cornettist Marc Charig and trombonist Nick Evans; and the line-up is completed by trombonist Malcolm Griffiths (from the Mike Westbrook band, as were Miller, Surman and Osborne) and the great West Indian trumpeter Harry Beckett. The opening track, "Mra," is five minutes of insistent riffing and rhythm (used in fact for many years as the theme tune of BBC Radio 3's "Jazz Record Requests") and cries out to be sampled. Wonderful interplay between the different sections, slightly reminscent of Tadd Dameron. The next track "Davashe's Dream" is a bittersweet ballad feature for the simultaneously caressing and slashing alto sax of Pukwana, combining lyricism and pain in a haunting way (there's also a great, slightly sardonic trumpet solo from Feza). More riffing in "The Bride" with Surman's Coltranesque soprano rising above the ensemble and knitting impeccably with the unbeatable Miller/Moholo rhythm team. "Andromeda" is a terrific, light-hearted avant-Basie swing romp with some outrageous playing from Feza and Evans (Wynton Marsalis would hate it!). The centrepiece of the album, however, is the extended 20-minute workout "Night Poem," an intricately-constructed ambient dreamland with riffs drifting in and out of focus; Indian flutes and African xylophone interacting with the free playing (Beckett, Griffiths and Osborne - on clarinet - being the most discernible). To finish with, the that's-all-folks 200 mph one-minute sign-off of "Union Special." If you dig this you should also seek out "Live At Willisau" recorded in 1973 and reissued on the independent Ogun label on CD in Europe in 1994 (and still, to my knowledge, available). Evan Parker and Radu Malfatti also appear on the latter and drive the music into even more abstract (and sometimes prototype punk-jazz) territory.

don't believe the hype!! great cd.......2005-07-12
hey this cd is one of the most under rated rap cd's ever made.if you like hard core or ass shakin hip hop then this is not for you. but if you like the mellow sounding hip hop like de la soul, tribe called quest, digable planets then you'll like this cd.
pure garbage........2005-04-20
This was one of the wackest cd's I've ever heard. Man, when I was in 5th grade, I loved hearing Helluva, the beat was great, especially sampled that oldies song mentioned previous, and they were talking about some chick they were obsessed about. But then the rest of the cd, weak weak lyrics, wack @$$ beats. I was like, this is MC Hammer level. I was so dissapointed, do not own this cd, because after one listen through every song, I was so disgusted. Save your money. This is a classic example of weak hip hop.
lame album.......2004-05-02
this shiznick was wack. 'Helluva' used a sample from an old Betty Wright song for the beat, which was mad doo doo. why the heck they formed in the damn first place.

Classic Boston Hardcore.......2005-09-15
S.S.D were the first Boston straight edge hardcore band (even though Springa was far from being Straight Edge) and pretty much ran the scene with many of their cult followers starting groups who made up the infamous Boston Crew aka The Wolfpack, a mob of cleancut, clean living, suburban kids from Boston ("a mini-army of angry youth" as D.Y.S themselves put it) who'd beat up kids at shows who weren't straight edge, particularly New York and Jersey kids. D.Y.S (that's Department Of Youth Services and not, as some people suggest, anything saucy to do with your sister) were one of those groups.
3 or 4 years before Dave Smalley would go on to front the second Dag Nasty line-up that'd make the classic D.C album "can i say" he was a gawky, shaven headed teenager sporting jeans with the Black Flag logo drawn on screaming about brotherhood, standing proud and Straight edge unity. "Brotherhood" was their original 12" released on Al Barile from S.S.D's X Claim Records in 1983 and it's everything you could possibly want from an early 80s hardcore album. Musically, it's a blast full of raw agressive buzzsaw guitared Boston H.C and chant along anthems. As with most of the key Boston bands of the time, D.Y.S were adept at doing mid-tempo growling as they were at doing fast and furious. Naturally, the godly Lou Giordano helped produced and engineered it. Was there ever another producer who knew how to capture the raw energy of hardcore that quite so well? Historically, it's a crucial snapshot of the early Boston scene and the blueprint for the whole '86 - '89 Noo Yawk Youth Crew.
"Brotherhood" got re-released by Taang in 1991 as "wolfpack" with four terrible comedy songs including an atrocious cover of Sabbath's "iron man" and a really hilarious (or so the band thought) reggae song with Dave Smalley doing an embarassing faux-Jamaican accent. You can find this on the cd alongside the second self titled D.Y.S album where they went metal (which is now called "fire and ice" for some reason..confusing, huh?) called "fire and ice"/"wolfpack" but you really shouldn't waste your money on that as everything D.Y.S recorded that you need is right chea on "brotherhood".
