Simon Rattle leads the 12 Cellists of the Berlin Philharmonic beyond their popular South American Getaway project with this trip north of the border, where they mine the sounds of American jazz, popular song, spirituals, and film themes. The results are varied, and the tracks that work best may surprise you. Chick Corea's "Spain" begins as a moving lament, but unfolds to become sweeping, grand, and celebratory. The Pink Panther theme is a lightweight but fun romp through the familiar tune (the cellists even do a little whistling while they work). Meanwhile, the oddest cut has to be Sergio Cardenas's "The Flower Is a Key (A Rap for Mozart)," on which Sir Simon Rattle himself performs both spoken word and conducting duties (he's far better at conducting). All in all, this is a pleasant, relaxing album of timeless pop favorites. --Jason VerlindeCustomer Reviews:

Both my father and Mancini received Academy Award nominations for this music. I sat in on the recording sessions - great memories!
Great CD.......2003-06-17
I think this is Henry Mancini conducting Glen Miller's orch, but I can't be sure. That said, this is the best Glen Miller I've ever heard. There is a really kick to the music here.

MILLER'S MAGIC AND BEYOND!.......2004-10-07
There are many Glenn Miller collections featuring his unique big band sound, which have ensured his iconic status, aided by his mysterious disappearance whilst flying over the English Channel and the popular 1954 biographical movie which entertained a diverse audience. With 2004 marking his birth centenary THE GLENN MILLER STORY is a series of 20 CD's in five sets which provide the ultimate tribute and includes much additional material rather than the usual popular end of his catalogue which normally fills such compilations. The previous four sets(containing CD's 1-16)concentrated initially on Miller's solo days as a trombonist with various big-bands; his own 1935 established embryonic unit; the enormous popularity of the band which reached top-listing amongst the most respected in the USA and the formation of the 418th Army Air Forces Band when Miller signed up to support the armed forces.
This four-disc set of 106 tracks presents the final chapter over the period December 1943-November 1945 when initially Captain Glenn Miller headed the 2nd. AAF Training Command Radio Unit for a six month stint in England for troop concerts, recording dates and radio broadcasts with the intention of moving through Europe as the opportunity arose. Dinah Shore recorded STAR EYES and ALL I DO IS DREAM OF YOU with the band in London in 1944 and the inclusion of many broadcast tracks show just how well the band played with superb renditions of CARIBBEAN CLPPER and TAIL END CHARLIE amongst many. Resident vocalist Johnny Desmond effectively covers the ballads with A FELLOW ON A FURLOUGH, OH, WHAT A BEAUTIFUL MORNING and SPEAK LOW amongst them, whilst the superb Crew Chiefs finely back up on many tracks. Miller's unexplained loss over the English Channel on 15th December 1944 was obviously a major blow, but under the dual direction of Ray McKinley and Jerry Gray, the band continued with the tour plan until the war ended and the musicians were demobbed. The remainder of the tracks cover various Miller-branded post-war outfits which continued the estblished sound tradition under the auspices of McKinley, Grey and Tex Beneke through the years 1946-1956 with many of the old favourites suitably recreated and new ones added. The sound quality is quite superb for recordings of this age which are well documented within the extensive notes, rare photographs and the band's musician line-up with dates fitting and following the chronological running order. There's certainly enough quality here to want to seek out all the volumes in this excellent anthology.

MILLER'S MAGIC STILL SHINES!.......2004-08-05
The musical legacy of Glenn Miller has been fuelled by his creative special sound, the 1954 biographical movie, and the ongoing mystery concerning his death in 1944. Still at the forefront of popular music, 2004 marks his birth centenary and THE GLENN MILLER STORY is a series of twenty CD's released in five volumes which provide the ultimate tribute and adds so much additional material to the usual popular numbers which normally appear on compilations. This particular collection covers the period just 4 years after the formation of Miller's own band after many years as a trombonist with many outfits including Benny Goodman and the Dorseys'. The popularity of big bands began to peak in 1939 and continued well into the 40's and Miller's RCA recording output was prolific and opportune for the demands of the American record buying public of the day and these four CD's merely cover a ten month period for the featured 100 tracks. At the time, the Orchestra was playing at the famed Glen Island Casino from where it also made frequent radio broadcasts which aided his growing popularity. In fact in a Poll he was voted 4th behind the longer established Goodman, Artie Shaw and Tommy Dorsey Orchestras. Featured vocalists, Bob Eberle and Marion Hutton are well-featured with songs like OH YOU CRAZY MOON, WHO'S SORRY NOW?, GIVE A LITTLE WHISTLE and WHAT'S THE MATTER WITH ME? The embryonic Kay Starr also did a brief stint and recorded a couple of light-hearted numbers, LOVE WITH A CAPITAL "YOU" and BABY ME, whilst Tex Beneke often dropped clarinet or tenor saxophone for the occasional spot of vocalising on songs like THE LITTLE MAN WHO WASN'T THERE. The singers often had to keep up with break neck speed arrangements so must have quickly learned their breathing techniques in order to cope! As for the band itself, there are the big-sellers, PENNSYLVANIA 6-5000 and IN THE MOOD - the latter in two versions - one studio; the other a live recording and the inclusion of many of the latter in this collection gives a fair idea of the atmosphere which prevailed in front of an audience as opposed to the better ambiance but colder feel of the recording studio. Other numbers include PAGAN LOVE SONG, BEER BARREL POLKA, JOHNSON RAG and RUG CUTTER'S SWING and these are in fact more typical of a more jazzy but typical Miller style compared to the familiar hits. The sound quality is quite superb for recordings of this age which are well documented within the extensive notes, rare photographs and the band's musician line-up with dates fitting and following the chronological running order. There's certainly enough quality here to want to seek out the other four volumes in this excellent anthology.
