4 out of 5 stars Another one of those "ya had to have been there" albums!.......2006-07-29

Though the movie from whence comes the music on the album is a classic in its own right, the soundtrack is more a time capsule of what we listened to and danced to in 1991. Most of the artists/groups found on the release have either moved on to bigger and better things (Ice-T, Gerald Levert, and multi-talented Queen Latifah), are still recording with lesser success (Johnny Gill with "New Edition" and Keith Sweat), or have faded into relative obscurity (Color Me Badd, Troop, Guy, and 2 Live Crew).

But, in their day, they ruled the airwaves.

Ironically, the song that is the most dated is the sole remake: "For the Love of Money/Living For the City (Medley)". While the two in their respective original forms are just as thrilling today as they were three decades ago, the "new jack swing" version found on the soundtrack pales in comparison, which bears evidence to the fact that some songs cannot be remade.

But, honestly, the album is a good companion to a great film and that's all that can be asked of it.

3 out of 5 stars H-U-S-T-L-E-R hustler. .......2006-05-08

This is a soundtrack I've had for years but really rarely play. The truth is it's pretty good all the way through, but only 3-4 tracks stand-out to me. Obviously the Ice-T "New Jack Hustler (Nino's Theme)" is awesome, and was kind of the unofficial theme of the movie. "I Wanna Sex You Up" by Color Me Badd may seem cheesy now, but was huge at the time, and I actually still like it. Then there's "For The Love Of Money/Living For The City" with that unmistakeable opening, a good track for the film and greed in general. The rest is a mix of R&B/Soul and light rap, all decent, but nothing too amazing. Overall I guess this serves as a good time-capsule for 1991 if nothing else, in the genres anyway. Well worth the 94 cents it's currently going for used.

5 out of 5 stars New Jack City is still going on?.......2006-03-21

New Jack City is one of the movies that really made me realize what was going on out there in the streets. Another reality is that these things are still going on today as I am typing this review. There will always be a Nino Brown with a fly girlfriend on his side. All of this is simply life period and what more can I say besides the movie is great. I look at all the people who are now older and doing their thing. We really don't see Wesly Snipes like we used to. Ice T is doing his thing with "Law & Order", Vanessa Williams has finished her work on the "Soul Food Series", Christopher Williams is missing in action for whatever reason, but he is still a nice looking man, Allen Payne was really good in "Blue Hill", Michael Michelle is doing her thing. The movie has really shined the light on life in America along with how neighborhoods do in fact change. There will always be the "Pookies" too. Great movie, outstanding cast and script.

5 out of 5 stars Still a slammin' soundtrack! .......2004-11-07

I still talk about this soundtrack album a good 13 years later. I've already worn out the original CD I bought in '91 and I'm trying to get another one. This one was loaded with funky new jack swing numbers like Christopher Williams,F.S. Effect, Guy (too funky), Color Me Badd's bass heavy track, underrated Danny Madden's Facts of Love, Ice-T's aggressive New Jack Hustler and others! The ballads are nice--Johnny Gill's ballad gives Keith Sweat's some stiff competition! 2 Live Crew's somber, message-driven In The Dust is a smart alternative to their sex-driven songs. And the surprise here was the Troop/Levert/Queen Latifah song For the Love Of Money, a strong mix of soulful R&B and the Queen's no-nonsense hip-hop style. This really was a hot song using the rap/R&B collaboration style that Beyonce, Christina Aguilera, Ja Rule, Ashanti and a number of artists use today! Phenomenal soundtrack with some gritty, urban, hard hitting beats and rhythms!

4 out of 5 stars One Of The Better New Jack Era Soundtracks.......2003-09-17

In 1991, you make a soundtrack with names like Johnny Gill, Color Me Badd, Keith Sweat, Guy, Ice-T, and 2 Live Crew its going to attract mainstream audience's. Its a really good cross-section of Rap, house, and R&B styles (New Jack Swing Era) in keeping with the attitude of the flick. The album kicks off right with a visceral cry of urban-poor rage, Ice-T's "New Jack Hustler," (also a perceptive linkage between the United States' capitalist, materialist values and the drug-pushing, murder, and gang warfare that runs rampant in its inner cities), and the one album wonder's F.S. Effect convey the same type of energy with "Get It Together (Black Is A Force)." Keith Sweat and Johnny Gill provide two of the finest numbers on this collection; Gill's "I'm Still Waiting," is one of the more popular songs the one time New Edition member recorded, and Sweat's "(There You Go) Tellin' Me No Again," is one of the better New Jack Ballads of the early '90s. While Guy's "New Jack City," and Troop's cover of the O'Jays' "For The Love Of Money," titled "For the Love of Money/Living for the City," are the albums better New Jack Swing moments; Aaron Hall's vocals are in prime form, sounding dope. Uptown vocalist Christopher Williams contributes a well put together (vocally) song, "I'm Dreaming," and the soundtrack also contains Color Me Badd's huge mid-tempo hit "I Wanna Sex You Up." The disappointment in the rap area is "In The Dust," from 2 Live Crew, seems to be the soundtrack's throwaway, but the very underrated Danny Madden's "Facts Of Life," (heavily influenced by the ojays) derserved more attention, because he wasn't a Guy or Babyface clone. Essence, A Dutch group that sounds exactly/shockingly like The Cure, also contributes to the soundtrack with "Lyrics 2 the Rhythm."

Less than six weeks after the attack on the World Trade Center, pop, rock, and R&B luminaries gathered at Madison Square Garden to pay tribute to the firefighters, police officers, and rescue workers who stepped to the fore following the catastrophe. The benefit, captured on this two-disc set, consequently has an immediacy and urgency rare among star-studded extravaganzas; the ruins of the twin towers, as well as the passions of the performers and audience, were still smoldering. With Paul McCartney, Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, and David Bowie digging deep into their oeuvres to resurrect songs appropriate for the occasion (the likes of "Let It Be," "Salt of the Earth," and "Heroes" are truly stirring), and the Who delivering a stunningly urgent three-song set, rock's senior statesmen lead the way. Contributions from Bon Jovi, Billy Joel, Destiny's Child, and others flesh out a collection that is never less than inspirational and is frequently inspired. --Steven Stolder

4 out of 5 stars 9/11 Got Me Down, The Concert for NYC Made Me Up.......2005-11-01

September 11, 2001 was a devastating day for the US. But thanks to Paul McCartney, we were soon lifted up. The Concert for New York City gathered 9/11 victims, fand and an all-star musical line-up to raise money for the victims. Among those performing were Paul McCartney, Mick Jagger, The Who, David Bowie, Elton John and James Taylor. These artists played very good sets, but it should have stopped there. Jay-Z should not have been invited, nor should Eric Clapton have. It is these mediocre performances that bring down my rating. But on the whole this is a very good and very helpful concert. And the proceeds go to help the victims. So it is a worthy buy.

4 out of 5 stars "Too Cool".......2002-09-27

This one is a keeper with songs like, America by David Bowie, Livin' On A Prayer by Bon Jovi, Izzo (H.O.V.A.) by Zayz, Miami 2017 by Billy Joel, Who Are You by The Who, and Freedom (reprise) by Paul McCartney. This one doesn't seem to leave anyone out.

3 out of 5 stars Could've Been Great, Upflifting, and Amusing.......2002-09-16

This set of songs performed by various musicians in support of some of the heroes of the 9-11 terrorist attacks falls a tad short of being terrific.

First the good: Paul McCartney's set was unbelievably patriotic, emotional, and energy-charged. The version of "Let It Be" with Eric Clapton on guitar was definitely the musical highlight of the night (the real highlight was Hilly Clinton getting overwhelmingly and deservedly booed followed closely by the booing of Ricky Gere). The sets by the Who and Bon Jovi were also highlights as was the duo version of "Your Song" by Elton John and Billy Joel (curiously and annoyingly left off this cd release).

And that brings me to the primary complaint (and the reason for the three star rating): Too much good stuff left off and too much horrible stuff kept. Example: The booing of Hilly and Ricky. Should have been left on. The John/Joel duo. Should've been left on. The "performances" by the following "artists" should've been left off: Jay-Z, Destiny's LooooveChild, Adam Sandler, and the Backdoor Boys. Basically, disc one could be skipped altogether and replaced with the repeated booings of Hilly and Gerbil.

Overall, disc two is an emotional keeper and almost makes up for the horrible stuff on disc one. My advice: Buy the set and use disc one as a coaster, frisbee, or smash it up and mail it to someone special.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic........2002-09-09

This concert was truly amazing.. The All-Star lineup of bands {minus Jay-Z and the Backstreet Boys..That was terrible} and actors was fantastic. Probably one of my favorite CDs. I recommend this CD to absolutely everyone..

5 out of 5 stars Why was the Hillary Clinton booing censored?.......2002-03-30

What a shame that VH1 saw fit to digitally remove the loud and lengthy booing Hillary Clinton received from the firemen and policemen. She is not one of us and never will be. She vilified NYC cops throughout her campaign and is universally despised by them. This lie will forever taint my recollections of an otherwise awesome concert.

3 out of 5 stars Between two extremes........2007-02-25

I was once someone who despised Yung Joc. As I listened to a large range of far more intelligent hip-hop, Joc seemed rather laughable in comparison; and to be completely honest, Joc is still a rather laughable character. However, I think a lot of hip-hop heads are taking that as far too much a negative. Like Young Jeezy and Mike Jones before him, Joc is a borderline horrible emcee, with enough charisma to cross-over to a commercial market. Joc is by no means a great rapper; he's struggling for average. However, he is quirky enough, and unintentionally humerous to appeal to hip-hop heads willing to listen to the music for fun.

Joc dropping knowledge would be blasphemous to his record label(the man IS signed to Bad Boy, after all; a label that specializes in commercial friendly hip-hop, with the only notable exceptions being B.I.G., Shyne, and G. Dep), but what he does, he does well enough to warrant him a spot in hip-hop's current market. More skilled than the likes of the Ying Yang Twins and Dem Franchize Boyz, but not nearly as talented as T.I. or Chamillionaire, Yung Joc falls into the same category as Young Dro and Young Jeezy(many 'young' emcees[no pun intended] here, eh?) as mediocre emcees who still have the ability to, at the very least, release catchy pop-oriented rap that isn't completely fodder.

Joc's the next in a long-line of coke-dealing emcees, although he's certainly no Pusha-T or Raekwon; instead, his tales of peddling are brief, and mostly focus on whatever 'glamorous' side there is to it. Beyond that, he's got cars and broads; he doesn't go any deeper than that for the most part, however, in all of this lyrical mediocrity, there are genuine flashes of potential, that show Joc may very well only be hindered by a gimmick Diddy saddled him with.

The production is, for the most part, decent. Most of it is very minimalistic, but the simplicity isn't neccessarily a bad thing. Most of the beats are catchy enough not to offend, and Joc sounds at home over them. Contrary to popular belief, most of these tracks do NOT fall under the snap category; neither snap nor crunk, they possess the same 'trap' backgrounds best examplified by T.I.'s breakthrough hit in 2003, Rubberband Man, which has since become the staple for trap-rap production.

I know a lot of people hate Joc, and even have good reasons for it; however, you can do worse(must I remind you that Bow Wow, Jibbs, and Webbie all still have careers?), and Joc still has genuine potential hidden underneath the corniness. This album isn't for the headphones, but it serves its purpose well enough.

1 out of 5 stars New Joc City: the worst place to live next to Nellyville.......2006-12-16

Yung Jocstrap is probably the worst rapper out of the south(for now)right now. Its Goin Down is the lamest club record since.....Ray J's Wait A Minute! The elementary lyrics plus the nonbeat provided Nitti(whose so-called beats all sound the same)or S****i(you be the judge)makes you scratch your head like how can people buy into this s***? I Know You See It suffers from the same flaws as Its Goin Down: Kiddie Lyrics and an Ice cream truck sounding beat plus Miss B Havin should have thrown in the towel since Bottle Action. Now for all you of saying I shouldnt judge this album based on those two songs fine. I'll judge based on these. Filler: Hear me comin, Do Ya bad(boring beat and bland lyrics about his pseudo bravado), Knock it out(juvenile sex record. The worst since Cam'ron's Suck it or not), Picture Perfect(Dumb Joc trying to teach you something? Who does he think he is kidding?), Flip Flops, Dope Boy Majic(Dope Boy Garbage), Dont Play With It(dull song with a hook that sounds exactly like David Banner's Play). Bottom Line: Definetly one on the worst albums of 2006. Childish lyrics, awkward sounding beats pretty much sum up this album. Dont waste precious time on this jocless joc. You and I know this album is dookie shoot so flip this teenage mutant ninja turtle looking motherf****r the bird and keep it moving!

1 out of 5 stars Trash.......2006-12-12

This album is almost as bad as D4L's album Down 4 Life and is worse than Dem Franchize Boyz On Top of Our Game. Yes you heard me correctly, it is even worse then On Top of our Game which is almost a miraculous feat. In other words, don't buy this trash. The odd chance you do like it I also suggest Kevin Federline's new album Playing With Fire.

1 out of 5 stars The title of this CD should've been DOPE BOY GARBAGE.......2006-12-11

Ok, 1st of all if you wanna be a rapper, DO NOT SIGN W/ BAD BOY. Ever since the late great KING OF NY "NOTORIOUS B.I.G. passed away, Puffy has been trying to make as much money of BIG as possible & exploit the dirty south by starting up Bad Boy South, & giving us such garbage as New Jock City. Anyone that knows anything about real hip hop should stay away from this crap.

5 out of 5 stars A Forgotten Treasure.......2007-06-21

I was a teen when this ablum was first released. At the time, 'Give Blood' was the hit single and the sole reason I bought 'White City'. This ended up being one of those vinyl albums that I played the hell out of. It's truly epic.... meant to be listened to in order. I never upgraded to cassette or CD, I just forgot about it. Until now. It's really such a treat to listen to this all over again. If you are a fan of Pete's, Pink Floyd (Dave Gilmour) or the Who (Tommy), I think you will love this album. My favorite song on this is 'Hiding Out', so I appreciated the bonus track.

4 out of 5 stars Not a Worthwhile Upgrade.......2007-02-26

If you don't already own this title, by all means, get it. This and Who Came First are my favorite solo outings by Pete. I would buy this CD based only on the title song - I like it that much. That said, the entire Pete Townshend remaster series is a disappointment. I had a hard time deciding, with each title, which one I was going to keep - the original or the remaster. I finally decided that, based on the extra tracks, I'd keep the remastered discs.

The remasters all have a greater clarity, but they possess a hard-edged sound that should have been rectified during remastering. Empty Glass is especially bad about this. So, if you already own these, I'd recommend living with them a while longer.

4 out of 5 stars Overlooked and Underappreciated.......2007-02-22

Many long-time fans of The Who missed out on the underpromoted solo efforts by various members of the band. Of all those works that I have heard, only Pete Townshend's have any real merit. I was pretty stoked when I read in the English music press that some of Pete's early work would be remastered and re-released. But it was obvious from the article that the writer didn't think much of White City.
I disagree. White City is nearly a masterpiece, and is one of the most overlooked and underappreciated of all Townshend's works. I liked it when it was originally released and I like it just as much in the remastered edition. While Roger Daltrey was the Who's powerhouse vocalist, it was always Townshend to whom the band turned when the vocals required a touch of nuance and emotion. And on White City, there is a lot of both.
White City itself is apparently one of the housing "estates" that are the legacy of the postwar socialist policies of the British government. Our equivalent in the US is "the projects". And both seem equally mind-numbing and violent places in which to live. This "estate" seems to be the subject of about half the CD. Songs like Hiding Out, I Am Secure, and White City Fighting paint quite a picture.
Lyrically, White City is flawless. Musically, I have my favorites. Those are the hard-driving Give Blood, the jaunty Brilliant Blues, the pounding Face the Face, the angry Secondhand Love, and the soothing I Am Secure. If you are an old Who fan and never got around to hearing any of Townshend's solo work, well you ought to hear this. And by the way, I had none of the defects on my CD mentioned by another reviewer. Maybe his was from a bad batch.

5 out of 5 stars Great album from Pete, Great re-release except..........2007-01-27

Ditto to all the previous reviews; however, my copy seems to be defective.

Like a previous customer, one of my favorite tracks is "Hiding Out", and I was excited to have the rare 12" Mix availible here. Unfortunately, 4 minutes and 43 seconds into the track there appears to be a glitch. It's present when I play the CD, when I rip it in iTunes, and even when I open the track in Adobe Audition.

The disc is of course brand new and unscathed, so I wonder if this is a defect in the binary data when the disc was manufactured? If anyone else has this problem, maybe Universal will conduct a recall. If not, I'll just send it back to Amazon for a replacement.

5 out of 5 stars Pete's Best (with note on "Night School").......2006-11-12

My favorite Pete Townshend solo album is 1985's "White City," a magnificent record with what is arguably Townshend's best collection of solo songs ever. Of course I love his other solo work, but for me, "White City" is Pete's crowning achievement outside of the Who. Thrilling rockers include "Give Blood," "Face The Face" (a Top 40 hit), "Secondhand Love," and "White City Fighting" (co-written with Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour, who also plays on the album), and great pop songs like "Brilliant Blues," "Hiding Out," and "Crashing By Design." Also, this new remaster of "White City" contains three excellent bonus tracks: "Night School" (previously only heard on the "White City" videocassette, currently out-of-print), Pete's cover of the English Beat's "Save It For Later," and an extended mix of "Hiding Out." However, I must say something about "Night School"---this is NOT the version heard on the "White City" video! I've always loved the original version of this song, as it's one of Pete's grooviest tunes ever (it even has a cool disco beat to it), with great vocals & lyrics from Pete. I remained puzzled for years why Pete never properly released the song, so naturally I was thrilled to see it listed as a bonus track on this remastered "White City" CD, and I promptly bought the disc. To my disappointment, this is an *alternate* version of "Night School." It's still very good---the song still rocks---but this version is a bit slower than the one on the "White City" video, with most of Pete's original vocals & lyrics removed. So, what happened to the original version of "Night School", Pete? That's the version I wanted! Oh well...perhaps Pete can correct this problem at a later date. And it takes nothing away at all from the "White City" album itself, which remains Pete Townshend's solo masterpiece. It's an outstanding album. Buy it!

There's a revolution goin' on ya'll. One where commericial bullsh$# on the radio is being replaced by those who live for THE ART. This revolt is being led by kats like Nicolay whom from relative obscurity, is single-handedly returning hip-hop to it's rightful owners, the MC. City Lights, from beginning to end, is a concept-like album spanning the range of beat production. From the "Theme" intro to the "Reprise" outro, this is an album that'll make you look up and realize you've been beatin' the same CD in your car stereo for like a month(I know from first-hand experience). Standout tracks include "Fantastic, Memory Lane, The Sopranos, We Can Fly, and the Reprise." All around an amazing experience! Nicolay together with kats like Kev Brown, 9th, Marc Mac and the elders Pete and Primo; will hopefully drive Hip Hop into the next generation before radio drives it into the ground.

5 out of 5 stars Nicolay is on a roll.......2006-03-11

After his work with Phonte on The Foreign Exchange, I didn't see how Nicolay could do better. But he did. The grooves here are slammin'. Phonte's cameo on the CD was a very pleasant surprise. I can't put the CD down.

5 out of 5 stars A NIGHT IN THE CITY.......2006-02-08

Nicolay got beats. You can hate all you want to, but this man has a God-given talent on the boards. Fresh off of "The Dutchmasters" mixtape come his intrumental joint, "The City Lights 1.5". This isn't your regular instrumental cd, as it blends flawlessly in between each track with backdrops of people on the street, car horns and subway cars to give the "feel" of living in the Big City (NYC). Even without the backdrops, the instrumentals alone are the perfect sountrack to the urban landscape. Instead of using the same tired drum patters that have been killed countless times in the past, Nic chooses to improvise and switch up when you least expect it, adding melodic arrangements that places him years ahead of his peers, even using an array of arrangements reminiscient of when cats actually made "music". The standout beats are the big-band horns of "Fantastic", the soaring "Light it Up", the warm "Indian Summer" and "So Far", the construction-at-work of "Band Practice", and "We Can Fly", which gives the feel of the entrance song of the Justice Leage or your favorite superhero. The climax of the album is "Victory" which builds up higher and higher, as if it's the theme to when you've beaten the last level of a game you've been busting your ass on for almost months. For fans of BBE's Beat Generation, even Jazz Enthusiasts, this will be a gem in your collection. SHOUT OUT TO THE JUSTUS LEAGUE.

4 out of 5 stars Phat Beats (4.5 Stars).......2006-02-07

Nicolay has always been nice, but it's hard to create a niche when your crew is standing in the gargantuan shadow of 9th Wonder/Little Brother. Khrysis found his own niche with that last Away Team album (National Anthem) and, in my humble opinion, this should be the album that seperates Nicolay from the rest of the JL pack. I know cats like to compare 9th Wonder to Pete Rock, but I think Nicolay has more of a PR sound than 9th does. 9th's sound is more like mellowed out boom bap while Nic has a more vibrant, soulful sound to it. Vibrant and soulful are pretty much the best descriptions for the sound of the album. There isn't a single bad track to be found on the entire LP.

Only flaws I can think of are the unnecessary interludes where the babbling that's going on actually interrupts a steady flow of dope beats (especially the ones with L.E.G.A.C.Y. on 'em). It's like a teacher slamming a book on your desk while simultaneously snatching you right out of a great daydream. Personally, I would've appreciated the interludes being left off of the album. But that's just me.

City Lights Volume 1.5 is definitely one of the better hip hop instrumental albums out there. Do yourself a favor and treat yourself to a great album from a producer who can't possibly continue to be so slept on if he keeps up this pace. I highly recommend adding this album to the collection.

Big Zion I fan... but this is probably the least favorite album of mine. The more i listened to it... the more it grew on me.. but... its nothing compared to their earliest albums. PLUS... i'm not to fond of the GROUCH. oh well, still a good cd... recommend it for true zion i fans.

5 out of 5 stars Heroes In The City of Dope? They should run for mayor........2007-04-26

This is my first taste of both Zion I and The Grouch. I'd always heard good things about them, especially the former, but never really gave either a chance. I'll be honest in admitting that I've never been big on most West Coast emcees; there's a handful of exceptions(Murs, Game, Snoop, Kurupt, E-40, Del, Cube, Dre, Asia), but beyond that, the West has never really presented me with some of my favorite hip-hop cuts. While I know that there's three very different, and prominent styles in the West(Gangsta rap artists like Snoop, Bay Area/Hyphy artists like Mr. F.A.B., and the 'different' emcees like Del), I wasn't sure what to expect from either Zion or The Grouch. What I got was Heroes In The City of Dope; an album that certainly puts the emphasis on dope.

The production on this album is magnificient. Flawless from start to finish. The majority of it was produced by the producer half of Zion I, Amp Live, who has a great range of diversity in his sounds. Getting soulful like Chi-town's best on tracks like Make You Fly, and bringing it to the Bay with Bad Lands, Amp Live constructs an album behind the boards that is sonically pleasing no matter what region you represent.

Zion is an amazing rapper. I'll state that now. While The Grouch is quite an ill emcee in his own right, Zion is in a league of his own. Borrowing social consciousness that is similar in vein to fellow California emcee, MUrs, Zion manages to craft together a string of songs with a positive message, while also being able to shed some light on the topics he chooses, providing some humor in between. His vocal tone is very smooth, akin to Q-Tip in range, and his flow almost seems effortless in execution. The Grouch has a bit more raspy of a tone, but still sounds right at home alongside Zion's. A member of the Living Legends crew which includes the aforementioned Murs, The Grouch is a bit more cynical than Zion, but still presents a positive message, even when criticizing something such as the Hyphy movement.

As a pair, the two share some incredible chemistry, something that is rare for two emcees who seem randomly placed together. This is best displayed in tracks like Current Affairs and Bad Lands, where both emcees go back and forth without missing a step. While every single track on here is certifiably dope, the stand-out tracks are still evident; lead single Hit 'Em features tight production that sounds like it could crossover given exposure, as well as an ill guest spot by Mistah F.A.B. Make You Fly features the elegant Esthero, who croons a beautiful chorus for the track; equally gorgeous is the beat Amp Live provides to it, and the pair of dope verses from both Grouch and Zion. Smack is another great track that shows the duo's chemistry, while Digital Dirt is a track that blames technology for some of society's current ills.

Heroes In The City of Dope is an excellent album that any hip-hop head should have in their collection. There are absolutely no complaints to be made, and it's certainly recommended, to new-comers and fans alike.

5 out of 5 stars Good cd.......2007-01-27

Takes some time to get use to, but after a phew listens. You really start to appreciate the music immensely. Track 2, 11, 15 are my 3 favorite songs. The rest of the songs are really well written and produced well. How ever those three songs are my favorite. Number, 11 is my new favorite song out of my whole collection of music, so far.

2 out of 5 stars I'm very dissappointed........2007-01-02

I am a long time fan of the Grouch's material. This album does not feature any production by the Grouch, and it is far inferior to his unique production style. The one song I heard from this duo from grouch's my baddest btchs cd, was very dope, far better than anything on this album. There is far too much singing and pop appeal to this album for my taste. Although this album is far better than any mainstream hip hop, buy any other grouch album, the first CMA album, or either G&E album before this release. It has one really good track, the 2nd track. The rest is truely forgettable. I'm not familiar with Zion I's material, but this is really unimpressive stuff from him. Grouch is the only reason i give this album even 2 stars. Production lacks, singing ruins otherwise good songs, and Zion I is really just boring to hear.

5 out of 5 stars It's basic. buy it........2006-10-24

I have been down with Zion I from Mind Over Matter, and basically they have evolved into one of the most diverse and intelligent hip hop groups to come out in the past couple of years. Fans of old Talib Kweli (reflections eternal) and blackstar should get this album. Two of the best MCs out there and you'll know it after hearing this album. Just check it thats it.

Only in hip-hop could a heretofore unknown from St. Louis have enough clout to get his boys put on. Of course, if the recently anonymous individual is six-times-platinum-and-counting rapper Nelly, it's easy to understand why his longtime crew the St. Lunatics warrants some buzz. Like Country Grammar, Free City brims with bass-driven, relatively sample-free, syncopated shake and a set of songs that celebrate cars, girls, partying, and making (and spending) cash. And, like Country Grammar, they make a point of celebrating their local lifestyle, with songs like "Midwest Swing," in which Nelly declares "What you think we live on the farm? N**** be for real / We got Benz, Rovers and Jags, Hummers and Devilles." Granted, the Lunatics aren't deep lyrical thinkers, but for the hazy hot days of summer, there is a real appeal to their bounce-heavy beats and drawling down-home vibe. --Amy Linden

1 out of 5 stars Nelly sucks, and so do his friends........2006-01-03

Just when you thought it couldn't get worse, Nelly decides to hook up his untalented friends, priceless. I saw these guys on mtv and they look retarded, I mean, for crying out loud one of the guys was wearing a phantom of the opera mask, is he deformed or just ignorant? Well, back to what we're supposed to be talking about, the music, if that's what you want to call it, this one is another earache waiting to happen. If listening to untalented people talk about all their money and bling bling and how cool they are gets you off than this album is just for you, if you like good hip hop than you already know not to touch this album with a 1000000 foot pole.

    2 out of 5 stars 2.5 stars from STL.......2005-09-06

I admit I liked Nelly when he first came out, it was something new and original, but there's a reason he blew up and the rest of his crew didn't and it's evident on this album, they're wack (and I can't stand Nelly anymore since every little 7 and 8 year old is on his %&#%). Of the 14 songs on here, 4 are good, 3 or 4 are ok, and the rest are $h!+. Production is ok, Jason Epeprson does 10 songs, Wally Yaghnam does 3 and City Spud does 1. The lyrics are nothing special at all and get old after the 2nd songs, and the flow of them all is bad as well. If your a little kid or like that gay radio crap then pick thi sup otherwise please pass it by, this is one of the reasons why hip-hop is in a bad state now.

City High's two-guys-and-a-girl combination will strike inevitable comparisons to their predecessors in the hip-hop neo- soulster sweepstakes, namely Digable Planets and the Fugees. But their perimeters have been adjusted to fit the post-millennial tension that urban radio is currently experiencing. Bypassing all sorts of obvious "conscious" hipsterisms, the trio's music strikes a fine balance between self-realization and street-level realness. The fact that they chose to address such basic concerns as low-income single motherhood (on "What Would You Do") and the perils of creeping with jailbait ("15 Will Get You 20"), immediately sets them apart from both the Missy Elliotts and the Lucy Pearls of the world. Stylistically, the record is surprisingly heavy on the smoothed-out R&B tip, and singer Claudette Ortiz is unquestionably more Destiny's Child than L-Boogie. But the production, handled by executive producer Wyclef Jean, DJ Clark Kent, and others, subverts the classic Quiet Storm formula and serves as an interesting counterpoint to the group's capable vocals. City High is a keeper. --Rebecca Levine

5 out of 5 stars This cd was and still is revolutionary........2006-05-13

There are many reasons as to why people think this group ended so prematurely. Some say its because they were not mature enough in understanding how to take advantage of their talents. I'd disagree. This cd is amazing, so amazing that a musical in LA which fundraises money for inner city communities has now been produced based on the cd. I wonder how many times such a thing has happened, especially since the music was made by a group of young and upcoming aritists. The music you wil find on this cd is some of the best entertaining hip-hop you'll ever come across. The kids were mentored by Wycleff, and such a professionally produced album allowed the talent of these kids, who can all both sing and rap extraordinarily well, to shine right through. And yeah, they may have come from a suburb, and thats not a city, but suburbs are basically cities, just a little more quiet. If anything living in a more quiet place allowed these kids the time to write, develop their talents and think about what they want to say.

We can all learn from the messages on these tracks, especially the most popular song "What would you do." The song is based on a real life experience and it has incredible truth in it. Real people similar to the single mother in this song are trapped in poverty today and living really hard lives. I read a quote made by one of the members of City High and he explained how its easy to judge quickly, but you have to put yourself in their shoes, and try to feel their pain. While people living tough lives shouldn't makes excuses for their ignorance, these people should also not be held responsible for putting an end to the problems. Its up to people like the group members of City High who were brought up in a better environment to help out. City High accomplished this by achieving world wide fame, and you might learn a little something by listening to their masterpiece. Buy the cd. Its worth the money.

Thi album would be good for both clubs and just for listening to contemporary hip hop. With the good beats, passionate lyrics, and good production, you have a great album. My Favorites are Caramel, What Would You Do, City High Anthem, and Sista

    3 out of 5 stars City High - actually 3.5 stars.......2005-08-06

I bought this disc as soon as it dropped in 2001, listened to it in entirety once then shelved it. I actually had it in my "sell" pile but decided to listen to it again. I don't know what was wrong with my ears back then but this is a very good debut cd from a group that we'll probably never hear from again. R&B and hip hop music in general have become a joke in that listeners are forced to listen to the same "christened few" while really talented people struggle to keep their music dream alive, put out quality music and satisfy music lovers. Unfortunately those that go outside the formulaic box are rarely heard from again after stellar debuts.

Claudette, Robby & Ryan each bring something different to the table, all can sing and rap adequately, more than a few of the songs stand out and the subject matter on their album is relevant to all.

That being said, needless to say after giving this disc a second listen, it's no longer in danger of being sold because I truly enjoy more than a few songs - Didn't Ya, Caramel, Best Friends, Sista, The Only One I Trust, So Many Things and the excellent Donny Hathaway remake, A Song for You.

I'm glad I wasn't so quick to give this cd away and gave it a second listen. If you are into r&b/hip hop and don't just write groups or artists off after one listen, you may be pleasantly surprised at how good this cd is.

    5 out of 5 stars Great CD!.......2005-07-01

For a "one-hit-wonder" group, this is actually a stellar CD. While "What Would You Do" and "Caramel" were the only main hits City High had, I'm very surprised that at least a couple other tracks didn't take off. As an avid music listener and enthusiast, this is one of my favorite CDs of all time. Each track is truly great and the lyrics have true, soulful meanings that hit me deep.

4 out of 5 stars SOUNDS OF BLACKNESS' "MERCY.."MAKES THIS BUY MOST WORTHY!.......2003-03-01

I first heard "God is Love/Mercy Mercy Me" on radio and got hooked on the song. When I found out it was by Sounds of Blackness, I searched every music store for their CD, and even on the web but couldn't find the song. Then I chanced upon it on this used CD. Man, the transition from the first part (GOD IS LOVE) a funky dance-beat Gospel inspired tune to the second part (Mercy Me) is a work of a genius. You should hear this one. The rest is so-so but this one cut makes the whole CD worthwhile to buy! Thanks, Sounds of Blackness and to seller tomhiatt2002!

4 out of 5 stars Great Interpretations of Classics.......2002-10-23

I really do love the music of Marvin Gaye and his work. To have it reinterpreted by so many different people presents a real challenge. Yet it works. Not incredibly well. But good enough to buy and listen to the variety of interpretations. They do put melodic, rapping and lyrical spins onto the work which in some ways does succeed in making it more their own stand alone interpretations rather than simply reduxes.
A great buy......perhaps go for the used price. There are some products that are materially/work product overpriced but are still worth a hearty, avid listening.

    5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2001-10-11

I first heard this while deployed in Italy.
The music of Marvin Gaye is beautiful, and the artists on the album give stellar performances. Their renditions are soulful and delivered from the heart. Don't let the fact that the cover says 'Various Artists' throw you off! This is wonderful.

5 out of 5 stars A Fitting Tribute to One of Music's GREATS!.......2001-02-19

Marvin Gaye was truly a unique artist, and this album of Gaye standards as interpreted by others adds to his legendary status. Beginning with daughter Nona's turn on the title cut, the CD triumphs on every single selection. The respective artists do not try to mimic Gaye; they simply do it their way without altering the passion of Gaye's lyrics.

Bono is superlative in his rendition of "Save the Children," BoyZ II Men blend their harmonies effectively on "Let's Get it On," while the very soulful Lisa Stansfield is just right on "Just to Keep You Satisfied." Madonna's "I Want You," slower than the original, retains Gaye's heartfelt plea to his intended paramour. "Stubborn Kind of Fellow" by Motown label mate Stevie Wonder is pure fun. Finally, Sounds of Blackness do justice to "God is Live/Mercy Mercy Me," making it perfect for the dancehall as well as the choir stand.

5 out of 5 stars Marvin would be proud of this tribute........2000-12-11

Every single song on this album is a wonderful tribute in itself to Marvin Gaye. Each artist puts their own touch on it, and makes it special, from the wonderful harmonies of Boyz 2 Men, the pulsating, haunting 'I want you' from Madonna and Massive Attack, and every other track on this album; Marvin would indeed be proud. For anyone who loves music from, and for the soul this is a must.
