Interesting concepts and funky grooves, but falls just short.......2002-02-05
Musically, the combination of influences is original, to say the least. Anyone say globalization? You've got well-programmed, offbeat, syncopated basses, snares, and hats that never fail to move you in some way, given that extra kick at the bottom by some serious and athletic analog basses. What's left of the soundscape is overlaid with Rhodes, modulated synths, strings, alpenhorns, flutes, and even what is probably an electrified zither (the zither, featured in in Private Sky - incidentally one of the strongest tracks - gives a cool Blade Runner meets Isaac Hayes vibe). If this is sounding weird, it's because it is. Each track has a new surprise, and compositionally the songs move in and out of patterns, bridges, breakdowns, and so on. Cyril is pretty methodious about that.
Anyhow, the reason for the four stars is because even though all the elements are there, there's something missing that I can't quite put my finger on. Maybe it's that the production sounds like Para:Diso or Chaser fallen a little short of the requisite subtlety - they could have laid a few more effects or plug-ins on top of the electric piano and synths (some of them sound like an old Casio CZ5000). Or maybe it's just that they haven't yet settled into their groove yet as a music-producing entity, and are testing the water and finding their way. Either way, though, they've mapped out a completely new sonic landscape with "Hybrid Organics" and I hope to hear much more from this crazy space in the future.
