Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

5 out of 5 stars Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23

THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.

5 out of 5 stars Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14

The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway

5 out of 5 stars Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

5 out of 5 stars Life and Death On The Great White Way.......2007-06-24

Bob Fosse's 1979 ALL THAT JAZZ is perhaps most famous for the extreme reaction it provokes: you either love it or you hate it. There is no middle ground.

Joe Gideon (Roy Scheider) is a celebrated stage and film director famous for creating dance numbers with a super sexy style--and truly chaotic professional and personal life. Even as he edits a film he has recently directed, he begins rehearsals for a new Broadway show. Even as he duels with his acidic show-biz ex-wife over the needs of their daughter, he cheats on his girl friend with any lovely chorus girl who wants to fall across his bed. He goes from crisis to crisis in a round of late nights fueled by nicotine, caffine, alcohol, and drugs--and he loves every ego-gratifying moment of it. What he does not love is the heart attack he has in the middle of it all.

What divides viewers is not so much the plot as the overall style of the film. Like Joe Gideon, Bob Fosse (1927-1987) was most famous for his musicals, which were often akin to beautiful but distinctly dark hallucinations of super-stylized motion showing lots of skin. With ALL THAT JAZZ, Fosse takes his unique, highly surrealistic musical style and combines it with the similarly surrealistic approach of such master directors as Fellini. The result is a film that shifts between past, present, and future with glittering musical numbers that leap from the mind of Gideon himself to make wry comment on his egocentric madness--and in which beautiful show girls become the personification of death.

As Joe Gideon, Roy Scheider (perhaps best known for his tough-cop role in THE FRENCH CONNECTION) truly gives the performance of his career; he is amazing in the role of the driven, egocentric director/choreographer who will stop at nothing to pursue his desires, professional or otherwise. The film also gives us two performers who rarely appear on screen: Leland Palmer as Gideon's ex-wife Audrey Paris (a role based on Gwen Verdon) and Ann Rhineking as Gideon's long-suffering dancer-girlfried Kate Jagger (a role, ironically, based on herself.) Both prove extremely memorable--as does Ben Vereen, a performer I do not usually like, appearing here in as the emcee of Gideon's final and most memorable hallucination.

The cinematography by Giuseppe Rotunno is sharp, clean, disquieting, and manages to convey the New York of the late 1970s in remarkable detail; the editing by Alan Heim (who also worked on such memorable films as NETWORK and STAR 80) is also memorable. Indeed, be it lighting, costumes, casting, or overall art design it is virtually impossible to fault the film at any level. Even so--ALL THAT JAZZ remains as likely to divide viewers today as it did in 1979. Movie musicals have changed a great deal over the past decade or so, but ALL THAT JAZZ remains a unique offering. You either get it or you don't; you either like it or you hate it.

There are at least two DVDs on the market. One is a no-frills edition with a good transfer; the other offers several bells and whistles that fans of the film will enjoy. Recommended in either version.

GFT, Amazon Reviewer

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2007-06-18

A Fosse lovers must see. I was up for the main group of dancers for this movie oh so many years ago. I remember what I wore to the audition. We all showed up at the St. James theatre in NYC even though there was no audition notice in the trades and no announcement. I remember Fosse coming on the stage and laughing saying "how the hell did you all know about this...?" Well, word of mouth among the gypsies, that's how! He had already chosen his dancers but he liked to see what was around just in case. I was always called back and got to the last call back. Too bad right! Well the rest is history...get this dvd, it is a piece of history and a kind of dance, director, choreographer and discipline that no longer exists. SO sad!

4 out of 5 stars Well executed, entertaining, musical.......2007-03-25

The film is appearantly a loose auto-biographical account of the film's director Bob Fosse (Cabaret, Chicago, Star 80). A scrutinizing look at obsession leading to self destruction and finally the transference of pain to others. The film has too many technical high points to mention. Choreography goes without mention and has been mimicked by modern artists, sometimes blatantly. The screenplay is complex enough to be interesting but remains in the realm of 'easily digestible.'

5 out of 5 stars Eclectic Mix.......2007-02-24

Since I adore the movie, I can't help but love the soundtrack to All That Jazz. I'm not sure this CD would move every listener as it does me, but I see every scene as I listen and can't help but dance along now and then. Like the movie, this soundtrack is bittersweet and very raw in some places, cheeky and sentimental in others. For a Fosse junkie like me, it's a must have.

5 out of 5 stars "Bye, bye love"...........2007-02-09

Loved the DVD and this CD is just as entertaining. George Benson oozes showmanship so much so that it comes across just listening. "On Broadway and Bye bye love" are the stand out's.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars You'll be disappointed.......2006-09-02

Not the original artists. Very weak versions of beloved songs by marginal to downright bad vocalists.

5 out of 5 stars Pretty good musical mix.......2006-03-10

Lots of great and clear vocals. I was looking for a musical mix and this has a nice sampling of many major songs but also some more recent stuff. I haven't purchased an import before but I would do it again if the opportunity presented itself. It is somewhat annoying to have three cds when I think it could have fit onto two. Still, more than I have complaints, I have compliments about it.

Product Description

It was said that the busy footsteps of commuters would come to a standstill insde Paris Metro train stations whenever the gifted accordion player Michael Ganian played his musettes there. Huge crowds would take pause and gather to listen to this brilliant musician, who created an entirely new genre of accordion music by blending the sounds of classical music, musette, world-beat, and jazz. JPMC Records is proud to be able to offer "Ici Paris," currently the only international release by this hard-to-find artist, who sadly was tragically killed in 2000, leaving us with only the few recordings he created during his short life. "Ici Paris" contains 26 of Ganian's compositions, on which he's joined by bassist Rudolf Smahel and drummer Vitezslav Vavrda. On several compositions, the trio is accompanied by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra of the Czech Republic. Songs on this album include "Siene," "Carduelis de Musette," "Montparnasse Bienvenue," "Passion Tree," and "I Am In Heaven." His music does encompass a variety of styles and is truly unlike anything you've heard before. Supported by Smahel's capable walking bass lines and Vavrda's spirited drumming, Ganian is free to explore his complex compositions. Listening to any of the songs on this CD, you can almost imagine yourself sitting at a Parisian cafe or standing at the Metro station listening to Ganian with the rest of the awestruck crowd. "Ici Paris" includes works recorded from 1993 to 1999 and chronicles his development from vibrant street performer to accomplished composer. "Ici Paris" has consistently been JPMC Records' top selling album since its release in 2000 and we continue to get feedback from fans of Ganian's after purchasing the album.

5 out of 5 stars Music that will talk with your soul!.......2006-05-06

The music of Michael Ganian is unique. Listening to this cd while sitting in the balcony and looking at the sunset on the ocean is an experience like none other. If you like the music of Astor Piazolla, Gotan Project or Bajofondo Tango Club, this cd will surpass your expectations! Definitely buy this cd.

5 out of 5 stars His music slowed main tunnel of the Paris Metro to a halt..........2001-12-15

This extraordinarily talented person was able to bring the main tunnel of the Paris Metro to a halt just by ... playing there. An Armenian from Yerevan Armenia could hypnotize Parisians playing French Cafe style accordion music. It combines melancholic intonations typical to Armenian music with optimistic French. This is an absolutely unique virtuoso in his genre.

This cd showcases some of the best of Michael Ganian's work and is a must for those who like French cafe style accordion. With the possibility of this being the only cd of his work available, "The excellent accordionist and original composer Michael Ganian came to a tragic end and lost his life on 13 April 2000, being killed in Brno, Czech Republic, one day before his leaving for the USA"- http://www.michaelganian.cz/ -I would highly recommend adding this to your cd collection today.

5 out of 5 stars 'All In The Family'.......2007-02-04

The LaBarbera family is the nucleus of an abyss of talent, so to speak, that seems to flourish, as time moves on. The three brothers, John, Pat and Joe have been at the forefont of Jazz for more than four decades and there seems to be, however, no end in sight, which is, of course, to our benefit. Unfortunately, culture in the U.S. is not something American people seem to cherish or treasure, as the opposite side of this scenario is the case in most of Europe and other parts of the world. Jazz musicians, composers, arrangers and the like, are treated and percieved as, 'National Treasures' in some countries, as well as throughout the world, yet far too many Jazz artists in America, are forced to work at another job, in order to make ends meet, financially speaking. Americans seem to worship and idolize those entities that evolve around that sphere we know as, a ball. As a new student at Berklee College of Music in Boston, I became aware of and was introduced to Pat LaBarbera, around the year 1965-66. Shortly thereafter, Pat joined the Buddy Rich Big Band, which was a very new venture at that time. A few years after that, I ran into Pat in L.A., where he invited me and a few other musician friends to a, 'Buddy Rich Big Band' recording session on Sunset Blvd. Pat was a monster player at that very young stage of his career. A few years later, I became aware of yet, another member of the LaBarbera family. Joe LaBarbera emerged, thus, beginning a fabulous career as one of the finest drummers in the history of jazz and. Also, Joe spent more than a few years kickin' and propelling Tony Bennett into the legend and American cultural treasure, he has become. Joe was, and continues to be, without a doubt, the classiest, tastiest, most inventive and creative drummer I have ever heard and one that Tony Bennett has ever employed. Prior to Tony, however, Joe was the energy, the finely tuned power plant of the Chuck Mangione ensemble. Last but not least is, John La Barbera, whose composing and arranging skills have kept him busy for the better part of five decades. This album is a wonderful representation of just how colorful John weaves the notes of his intrinsically musical mind. John's lines and musical voicings are, at times eerie, leaving one to travel the journey he so mysteriously plots, yet, one could clearly hear and recognize those roots, which trace back to Coltrane, Ellington, Strayhorn and company. What a wonderful blessing, even a small miracle, some might say, to have three sons, who possess this level of musical genius, all from one family. The LaBarbera family, individually and from a collective point of view, have built a small dynasty in American music, specifically, Jazz, which will hopefully continue to flourish over the many years ahead. I know I am looking forward to other musical journeys this trio will take us on, in the very near and distant future. Buy this CD, sit back and travel this very colorful journey, one which John LaBarbera has weaved, along with passengers, brothers Joe & Pat.

5 out of 5 stars Great Writer, Great Band.......2006-02-26

John La Barbera is an expert when it comes to writing Jazz charts! With his last two recordings he has displayed that he also knows how to put together and lead an amazing band! I particularly enjoyed the last chart featuring the LA trumpet master, Wayne Bergeron!

5 out of 5 stars A Fantastic High Energy Big Band Production.......2005-09-23

"Fantazm is a fantastic high energy big band production with sizzling solos, great rhythm work and a brass section that delivers the big band sound with fire. Fantazm is a collection of standards and originals in the modern contemporary big band style. An enjoyable, powerful, bold and brassy big band recording that delivers a roaring musical experience and star performance from a great band."

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Organ Music.......2004-01-11

If you enjoy the sounds that the mighty Wurlitzer Pipe Organ can produce - you'll enjoy this album. George Wright is probably the best ever at mastering the multiple banks of keys and pedals of this complex instrument, and the music is very relaxing and entertaining. The sounds he coaxes out of the Wurlitzer on "Quiet Village" are remarkable. Easily one of his best - excellent on either a small office stereo, or played on a home theater system.

Album Description

Still ironically considered new artists, Fertile Ground has seven years, countless performances, and dozens of recordings to their credit. After 2 years of extensive touring, writing and recording, the group has unveiled their fourth full-length masterpiece, simply entitled Black Is… the highly-anticipated CD, is the sequel to the acclaimed 2002 release Seasons Change. This fourth full-length album, which will be internationally released and supported by an extensive world tour, contains a range of ethereal classics such as the title track, Black Is…, a soulful jazz waltz ballad full of affirmation, the joyful noise of Live In the Light; and the introspectively revealing song Naked, which gives us an example of how to truly connect with and reflect each other.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely peerless.......2005-06-03

I bought this CD after having seen Fertile Ground perform live in April. All I can say is Wow! Their music is spiritual, yet fun and lively -- they had people dancing in the crowded aisles of the theater. This is real music folks.

Fertile Ground's style encompasses jazz, reggae, samba with a little hip hop for good measure. And what can I say about Navasha Daya's voice? This vocalist sounds a lot like Phyllis Hyman to me, but far from being a soundalike, Daya is definitely a unique talent. She is a commanding presence not just because of her powerful set of pipes, but she has a way of engaging the audience that makes you want to watch this group all night. And the band does not play second fiddle to her voice because they can all hold their own. That is the hallmark of a good group -- when the musicians get to shine as much as the vocalist. As good their live show is, the CD is even better because you get to hit repeat as often as you like.

"Black Is" features 10 tracks along with some interludes and an instrumental. The title song is a love song to Black people that speaks to inner beauty and strength and exhorts the listener to remain steadfast. "Changing Woman" is a song that upholds the woman's various roles in life and is billed as a tribute to a native spirit. This is a balanced CD with some uptempo music that will make you groove, as well as some slower thought-provoking tracks.

This is definitely music for those of us with more on our minds than the latest dance step and material goods. I recommend it.

James Reese Europe was a major figure in New York's African American musical community in the years leading up to World War I, collaborating with Eubie Blake and Noble Sissle and working closely with the popular dance team of Vernon and Irene Castle. With the outbreak of war, Europe formed the Hell Fighters Band, part of the African American 369th U.S. Infantry. The band returned to the U.S. to great acclaim in February 1919, and the 24 tracks heard here were recorded in New York between March 3 and May 7 of that year. Two days later, Europe was stabbed to death by a disgruntled drummer, Herbert Wright, during an intermission in a Boston concert.

Though he was a titanic figure--Europe was the first African American officer to lead men into battle and Eubie Blake called him "the savior of Negro musicians"--his fame soon turned to obscurity. In 1995, Reid Bodger's thorough biography of Europe, A Life in Ragtime, appeared, rekindling widespread interest, and the following year saw the appearance of this music on two different CDs. A large band of brass, reeds, and percussion, with vocals by Noble Sissle, Europe's orchestra plays the popular music of the day with a distinctive spirit and a marked rhythmic fluency uncommon in orchestral ragtime. W.C. Handy is prominent in the repertoire ("St. Louis Blues," "Hesitating Blues," "Memphis Blues"). The songwriting team of Europe, Blake, and Sissle ranges in their subject matter from "Jazz Baby" to the wartime experiences of "No-Man's Land." Europe's associate Tom Bethel contributed "That Moaning Trombone" with its vocal effects, while "Clarinet Marmalade" comes from the Original Dixieland Jazz Band. Despite the references to jazz, though, this is a band poised on the jazz era, not a jazz band, with improvisation mostly limited to brief "breaks." Songs from White and African American composers alike contribute to the complex representation of black life in America, one alive with both stereotypes and new possibilities.

Another edition of these recordings, James Reese Europe appeared a few months earlier on the IAJRC label with the tracks arranged in chronological order of recording rather than the pattern here, which simulates the order of one of Jim Europe's concerts. Both versions provide a worthwhile portrait of a major figure in American music; however, they also represent slightly different philosophies of sound restoration. The IAJRC preserves much of the static to avoid loss of detail; the Memphis Archive is much cleaner and generally far more listenable. The Memphis Archive edition also contains substantial supporting material, a detailed 44-page account of Europe's life and music by Tim Gracyk. --Stuart Broomer

Album Description

James Reese Europe was the world's most accomplished black bandleader before 1920. he was internationally famous as the founder of New York's Clef Club, and as music director for Vernon and Irene Castle.

During World War I, he organized and led the all-black 369th U.S. Infantry "Hell Fighters" Band. They fought in the trenches, introduced that new music "Jazz" to the Continent, and were acclaimed in France and America as the greatest-ever regimental band.

In May, 1919, the "Hell Fighters" were on the last leg of their triumphal U.S. victory concert tour when Europe was murdered at age 39. All 24 recordings he made for Pathe in the last two months of his life are collected on this CD as well as a 44 page booklet with rare photographs and liner notes.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The transitional music mostly hints at jazz.......2000-10-26

Shortly after the IAJRC label came out with a CD reissuing all of the music recorded by James Reese Europe's unusual band during their four 1919 sessions, Memphis Archives put out a CD with the exact same material. The difference between the sets is that while IAJRC put out the material in strict chronological order, Memphis Archives instead chose to simulate a Europe concert. The liner notes of course differ greatly on these two competing sets, and the edge is given to Memphis Archives for Tim Gracyk's very extensive essay. The transitional music mostly hints at jazz but does not contain much improvisation. Europe's brand of dance music occupied its own category, including some Noble Sissle vocals, marching music, rags, waltzes, novelties and future jazz standards, and either of his sets (recorded just a short time before his murder) are recommended. Now if only Europe's eight groundbreaking titles of 1913-1914 would be reissued
