Life and Death On The Great White Way.......2007-06-24
Joe Gideon (Roy Scheider) is a celebrated stage and film director famous for creating dance numbers with a super sexy style--and truly chaotic professional and personal life. Even as he edits a film he has recently directed, he begins rehearsals for a new Broadway show. Even as he duels with his acidic show-biz ex-wife over the needs of their daughter, he cheats on his girl friend with any lovely chorus girl who wants to fall across his bed. He goes from crisis to crisis in a round of late nights fueled by nicotine, caffine, alcohol, and drugs--and he loves every ego-gratifying moment of it. What he does not love is the heart attack he has in the middle of it all.
What divides viewers is not so much the plot as the overall style of the film. Like Joe Gideon, Bob Fosse (1927-1987) was most famous for his musicals, which were often akin to beautiful but distinctly dark hallucinations of super-stylized motion showing lots of skin. With ALL THAT JAZZ, Fosse takes his unique, highly surrealistic musical style and combines it with the similarly surrealistic approach of such master directors as Fellini. The result is a film that shifts between past, present, and future with glittering musical numbers that leap from the mind of Gideon himself to make wry comment on his egocentric madness--and in which beautiful show girls become the personification of death.
As Joe Gideon, Roy Scheider (perhaps best known for his tough-cop role in THE FRENCH CONNECTION) truly gives the performance of his career; he is amazing in the role of the driven, egocentric director/choreographer who will stop at nothing to pursue his desires, professional or otherwise. The film also gives us two performers who rarely appear on screen: Leland Palmer as Gideon's ex-wife Audrey Paris (a role based on Gwen Verdon) and Ann Rhineking as Gideon's long-suffering dancer-girlfried Kate Jagger (a role, ironically, based on herself.) Both prove extremely memorable--as does Ben Vereen, a performer I do not usually like, appearing here in as the emcee of Gideon's final and most memorable hallucination.
The cinematography by Giuseppe Rotunno is sharp, clean, disquieting, and manages to convey the New York of the late 1970s in remarkable detail; the editing by Alan Heim (who also worked on such memorable films as NETWORK and STAR 80) is also memorable. Indeed, be it lighting, costumes, casting, or overall art design it is virtually impossible to fault the film at any level. Even so--ALL THAT JAZZ remains as likely to divide viewers today as it did in 1979. Movie musicals have changed a great deal over the past decade or so, but ALL THAT JAZZ remains a unique offering. You either get it or you don't; you either like it or you hate it.
There are at least two DVDs on the market. One is a no-frills edition with a good transfer; the other offers several bells and whistles that fans of the film will enjoy. Recommended in either version.

Product Description
It was said that the busy footsteps of commuters would come to a standstill insde Paris Metro train stations whenever the gifted accordion player Michael Ganian played his musettes there. Huge crowds would take pause and gather to listen to this brilliant musician, who created an entirely new genre of accordion music by blending the sounds of classical music, musette, world-beat, and jazz. JPMC Records is proud to be able to offer "Ici Paris," currently the only international release by this hard-to-find artist, who sadly was tragically killed in 2000, leaving us with only the few recordings he created during his short life. "Ici Paris" contains 26 of Ganian's compositions, on which he's joined by bassist Rudolf Smahel and drummer Vitezslav Vavrda. On several compositions, the trio is accompanied by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra of the Czech Republic. Songs on this album include "Siene," "Carduelis de Musette," "Montparnasse Bienvenue," "Passion Tree," and "I Am In Heaven." His music does encompass a variety of styles and is truly unlike anything you've heard before. Supported by Smahel's capable walking bass lines and Vavrda's spirited drumming, Ganian is free to explore his complex compositions. Listening to any of the songs on this CD, you can almost imagine yourself sitting at a Parisian cafe or standing at the Metro station listening to Ganian with the rest of the awestruck crowd. "Ici Paris" includes works recorded from 1993 to 1999 and chronicles his development from vibrant street performer to accomplished composer. "Ici Paris" has consistently been JPMC Records' top selling album since its release in 2000 and we continue to get feedback from fans of Ganian's after purchasing the album.Customer Reviews:

Album Description
Still ironically considered new artists, Fertile Ground has seven years, countless performances, and dozens of recordings to their credit. After 2 years of extensive touring, writing and recording, the group has unveiled their fourth full-length masterpiece, simply entitled Black Is the highly-anticipated CD, is the sequel to the acclaimed 2002 release Seasons Change. This fourth full-length album, which will be internationally released and supported by an extensive world tour, contains a range of ethereal classics such as the title track, Black Is , a soulful jazz waltz ballad full of affirmation, the joyful noise of Live In the Light; and the introspectively revealing song Naked, which gives us an example of how to truly connect with and reflect each other.Customer Reviews:

Absolutely peerless.......2005-06-03
Fertile Ground's style encompasses jazz, reggae, samba with a little hip hop for good measure. And what can I say about Navasha Daya's voice? This vocalist sounds a lot like Phyllis Hyman to me, but far from being a soundalike, Daya is definitely a unique talent. She is a commanding presence not just because of her powerful set of pipes, but she has a way of engaging the audience that makes you want to watch this group all night. And the band does not play second fiddle to her voice because they can all hold their own. That is the hallmark of a good group -- when the musicians get to shine as much as the vocalist. As good their live show is, the CD is even better because you get to hit repeat as often as you like.
"Black Is" features 10 tracks along with some interludes and an instrumental. The title song is a love song to Black people that speaks to inner beauty and strength and exhorts the listener to remain steadfast. "Changing Woman" is a song that upholds the woman's various roles in life and is billed as a tribute to a native spirit. This is a balanced CD with some uptempo music that will make you groove, as well as some slower thought-provoking tracks.
This is definitely music for those of us with more on our minds than the latest dance step and material goods. I recommend it.

James Reese Europe was a major figure in New York's African American musical community in the years leading up to World War I, collaborating with Eubie Blake and Noble Sissle and working closely with the popular dance team of Vernon and Irene Castle. With the outbreak of war, Europe formed the Hell Fighters Band, part of the African American 369th U.S. Infantry. The band returned to the U.S. to great acclaim in February 1919, and the 24 tracks heard here were recorded in New York between March 3 and May 7 of that year. Two days later, Europe was stabbed to death by a disgruntled drummer, Herbert Wright, during an intermission in a Boston concert.Though he was a titanic figure--Europe was the first African American officer to lead men into battle and Eubie Blake called him "the savior of Negro musicians"--his fame soon turned to obscurity. In 1995, Reid Bodger's thorough biography of Europe, A Life in Ragtime, appeared, rekindling widespread interest, and the following year saw the appearance of this music on two different CDs. A large band of brass, reeds, and percussion, with vocals by Noble Sissle, Europe's orchestra plays the popular music of the day with a distinctive spirit and a marked rhythmic fluency uncommon in orchestral ragtime. W.C. Handy is prominent in the repertoire ("St. Louis Blues," "Hesitating Blues," "Memphis Blues"). The songwriting team of Europe, Blake, and Sissle ranges in their subject matter from "Jazz Baby" to the wartime experiences of "No-Man's Land." Europe's associate Tom Bethel contributed "That Moaning Trombone" with its vocal effects, while "Clarinet Marmalade" comes from the Original Dixieland Jazz Band. Despite the references to jazz, though, this is a band poised on the jazz era, not a jazz band, with improvisation mostly limited to brief "breaks." Songs from White and African American composers alike contribute to the complex representation of black life in America, one alive with both stereotypes and new possibilities.
Another edition of these recordings, James Reese Europe appeared a few months earlier on the IAJRC label with the tracks arranged in chronological order of recording rather than the pattern here, which simulates the order of one of Jim Europe's concerts. Both versions provide a worthwhile portrait of a major figure in American music; however, they also represent slightly different philosophies of sound restoration. The IAJRC preserves much of the static to avoid loss of detail; the Memphis Archive is much cleaner and generally far more listenable. The Memphis Archive edition also contains substantial supporting material, a detailed 44-page account of Europe's life and music by Tim Gracyk. --Stuart Broomer
Album Description
James Reese Europe was the world's most accomplished black bandleader before 1920. he was internationally famous as the founder of New York's Clef Club, and as music director for Vernon and Irene Castle.During World War I, he organized and led the all-black 369th U.S. Infantry "Hell Fighters" Band. They fought in the trenches, introduced that new music "Jazz" to the Continent, and were acclaimed in France and America as the greatest-ever regimental band.
In May, 1919, the "Hell Fighters" were on the last leg of their triumphal U.S. victory concert tour when Europe was murdered at age 39. All 24 recordings he made for Pathe in the last two months of his life are collected on this CD as well as a 44 page booklet with rare photographs and liner notes.
