Just as Muhammad Ali once boasted that he could "float like a butterfly, sting like a bee," Louisiana's Sonny Landreth can make his slide guitar roar like a rocket ship and dance like a ballerina. As this live set recorded on his home turf attests, few guitarists combine such power with such precision. Landreth's veteran rhythm section of bassist David Ranson and drummer Kenneth Blevins provides whipcrack support on a set of supercharged instrumentals ("Native Stepson," "Z. Rider," "Pedal to Metal") and original blues ("Broken-Hearted Road," "Wind in Denver"), building to a climax with the guitarist's signature tune, "Congo Square." Though Landreth established himself as an ace sideman from his apprenticeship with zydeco kingpin Clifton Chenier through his extended stint with John Hiatt, he really cuts loose with his own trio, generating a dynamic propulsion that threatens to levitate this Lafayette dancehall. --Don McLeeseCustomer Reviews:

Greatest Rock/Blues Slide "Live" Album of All-Time.......2006-12-07
I have all of Sonny's recordings. This is right up there with "The Road We're On" in quality. In fact, Grant Street has a couple of tunes from "Road": All About You and Gone Pecan. Of course, Sonny just blows the doors off in the live setting.
That stuff that people have said about Sonny being only an "OK" singer? I just laugh when I hear that. Forget about it. Sonny does just fine there, and anyway, it doesn't mean a thing. You see, quite simply this is some of the greatest guitar work you will EVER hear, so it's immaterial. The guitar playing is so utterly incredible that any singing that might take place is pretty much incidental. Sonny does two or three sublime instrumentals on Grant Street, and on the others he sings and throws out lightning bolts. This is not what you'd call subtle or delicate music; it's heavy blues with a strong dose of Louisiana Zydeco thrown in; every tune just ROCKS!
BUY THIS ALBUM AND PLAY IT LOUD! YOU WILL LOVE IT! BUY IT FOR ALL OF YOUR FRIENDS!

Hurricane Katrina may have devastated New Orleans and surrounding Gulf communities in 2005, but it was also a forceful reminder of the Crescent City's world renowned status as the epicenter of much American musical heritage. This benefit album (all net proceeds will be donated to the local relief efforts of Habitat for Humanity, with a portion specifically set aside to provide housing for local musicians left homeless by the disaster) picks up that latter thread, a sometimes bittersweet reminder of how deepy ingrained, yet all-too-fragile, that cultural legacy really is. Allen Toussaint's succulent reworking of his "Yes We Can Can" sets a rhythmic, optimistic tone that parallels his city's own historical resilience, while Dr. John turns in a bluesy, laid-back "World I Never Made" that's a sharp contrast to the flashes of anger he showed on Tab Benoit's earlier benefit collection, Voice of the Wetlands. Irma Thomas gives a swampy, timely edge to Bessie Smith's "Back Water Blues" while others pay tribute to the region's history of gospel (Davell Crawford, Eddie Bo), indigenous cajun folk (Buckwheat Zydeco, Beausolei, Carol Fran) and legacy as the Birthplace of Jazz (vibrantly disparate contributions from Dr. Michael White, Dirty Dozen Brass Band and the venerable Preservation Hall Jazz Band). The Wild Magnolias' medley "Brother John Is Gone/Herc-Jolly-John" is a joyous, African-rooted gumbo of musical possibilities, while Donald Harrison's sax work with The Wardell Querzergue's Orchestra's on "What a Wonderful World" is a fine preamble for Toussaint's elegiac solo piano rendition of "Tipitina and Me." Randy Newman's closer, a melancholic new version of Good Old Boys' "Louisiana 1927," is a tribute to his own N.O. roots whose refrain--"Louisiana, they're trying to wash us away"--is also a forceful, tragic reminder that history does indeed repeat. --Jerry McCulleyAlbum Description
Nonesuch Records is releasing a benefit album of newly recorded songs featuring artists from the New Orleans music community - across a wide variety of styles - to document the depth, richness and profound musicality of that unique city. Funds from the sale of the record, titled Our New Orleans, will be donated to Habitat For Humanity to aid those affected by the recent Hurricane Katrina disaster. A number of New Orleans' best known musicians have been asked to record songs that are integral to their lives and that express their feelings about the city and the recent events there. Sessions began in New York on September 20, with the Preservation Hall Jazz Band and the Wild Magnolias recording at Clinton Studios. Later the same day and on September 21, Allen Toussaint, Irma Thomas and the Dirty Dozen Brass Band recorded at New York's Avatar Studios. Further sessions in October included Dr. John, Buckwheat Zydeco, and Randy Newman, among others. Nonesuch's parent company - Warner Bros. Records - is donating all of the production costs for this record, as part of the Warner Music Group's larger efforts on behalf of the hurricane victims. Many others involved in the project are also generously donating their time and services.Customer Reviews:

What's best about Best of the Bayou Blues is Tab Benoit's spankin' electric guitar tones and lean 'n' nasty licks on numbers like the ode to Cajun living "Voodoo on the Bayou" and the stinging, vibrato-drenched epic "These Blues are All Mine." This collection of Louisiana-themed tunes plucked from Benoit's five early Vanguard albums relate to the singer-and-six-stringer's swampland raising. They also showcase his versatility--veering from his customary plugged-in blues framework to a gentle acoustic take on the Delta classic "Mother Earth" to a roaring zydeco romp through Clifton Chenier's dancehall anthem "Hot Tamale Baby." Willie Nelson guests on "Rainy Day Blues," trading vocals and blending his nylon-string guitar with Benoit's Telecaster. A brisk jaunt through Hank Williams's "Jambalaya" seems more lagniappe than main course, but when Benoit's guitar comes crying into the soulful, homesick "Nice and Warm"--which plays out like a page written in this road warrior's diary on an especially lonely night--he more than compensates for the few slights among these 15 tunes. --Ted DrozdowskiCustomer Reviews:

Houma homeboy Tab Benoit may have snuck up on some blues fans, but his status as the best and brightest of modern Louisiana bluesmen is now too obvious for any to ignore. His swamp-saturated sound and incisive Telecaster attack, also heard on the Whiskey Store and Whiskey Store Live dueling-guitar albums with Jimmy Thackery, easily personalizes classics, such as Elmore James's "I Can't Hold Out," featured here with saxist Jimmy Carpenter. But Benoit's at his best with the bayou beat. As on 2003's The Sea Saint Sessions, Benoit spotlights the musical heritage of New Orleans by using two guest vocalists who are Crescent City icons: Mardi Gras Indian "Big Chief" Monk Boudreaux and dynastic percussionist/vocalist/composer Cyrille Neville. Boudreaux vocally parades through "Golden Crown" at a fittingly funky Mardi Gras tempo, while Neville provides two songs: the percussion-embellished "Little Girl Blues" and the history lesson "The Blues Is Here to Stay," on which he vocally duets with Benoit between some of the album's best guitar work.Buddy Guy's "I Smell a Rat" is the album's longest track as Benoit, beginning with a tasty intro, takes his most extended guitar workout, conjuring up a late-night blues club feel in the process. Benoit also contributes three originals, including the zydeco-tinged title track, an anthem of Cajun pride that serves him well as a signature song. Also his is the swamp stomper "Night Train," the album opener. At the other end is a surprise finale, a sublime front-porch, finger-picking acoustic rendition of "My Bucket's Got a Hole in It". --Michael Point

Irma Thomas has long been hailed as the "Soul Queen of New Orleans," an accolade that's accurate but seems a little limited. (Imagine calling Elvis Presley the "King of Memphis Rock & Roll.") As her first album of new recordings in six years attests, Thomas can sing just about anything better than just about anyone from just about anywhere. Though the liner notes indicate that most of the material was selected before Hurricane Katrina, there's a bittersweet resonance that extends from Arthur Alexander's lament about a once happy home "In the Middle of It All" and the soul classic "I Count the Tears" to the funeral dirge of the traditional "Another Man Done Gone" and the Blind Willie Johnson blues standard "Soul of a Man." There's an inspirational quality as well, in the gospel "I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel to Be Free" and the stirring closer, Stevie Wonder's "Shelter in the Rain," with only David Torkanowsky's piano backing Thomas's transcendent voice. Other Louisiana instrumental seasonings come from Sonny Landreth's slide guitar and Dirk Powell's fiddle. Most singers who have been recording as long as Thomas resort to tricks, mannerisms, and show-off displays, but she remains the anti-diva, a stylist of exquisite understatement whose every note rings true and hits home. --Don McLeeseAlbum Description
Irma Thomas is one of New Orleans' most beloved and iconic entertainers. On 'After the Rain,' the Soul Queen of New Orleans brings her rich and resonant vocals to a surprisingly varied repertoire that spans 75 years of American songwriting, the common thread being Irma's soulful and direct-from-the-heart delivery. Spare and often acoustic instrumental settings by an all-star Louisiana band allow Irma's vocals to shine through on each song. Recorded at rural Dockside Studio in Maurice, Louisiana only months after Hurricane Katrina, After the Rain is a remarkable declaration of resilience, presenting Irma Thomas at her very best.Customer Reviews:

"I know that this is a trying time for all of us in the City called New Orleans, but I know and feel everything is going to be alright. New Orleans has a lot of strong FAITH people and I am One of them. We are just displaced for a short time and Can and Will rebuild that beautiful city bigger and better then ever. Remember God first and he will grant you good success. To all my fans, KEEP THE FAITH. Love Irma"
Irma Thomas was on a gig in Austin, Texas when Katrina hit her beloved New Orleans. She went home to find her home and all of her belongings were gone. She was for a time, considered missing, and word went out that "The Queen of New Orleans" was lost. She was found, and has set an example for the rest of her fellow New Orlean residnets for her optimism and spirit. All of the songs on this CD were selected before Katrina hit, but it is not just fortune or luck but Faith that these all work as a post Katrina Memorial. This CD has the soul you expect and is sung directly from the heart. The songs span 75 years and Irma Thomas has re-written some verses to fit the occasion. What a find, what a woman, what memories and love she invokes.
Irma Thomas invited musicians from New Orleans to play with her on this CD. It was recorded in Southern Louisiana some months after Katrina hit. The players include jazz pianist
David Torkanowski, acoustic bassist James Singleton, drummer Stanton Moore, plus Dirk Powell, playing a variety of string instruments from guitar to banjo and fiddle. Guests include guitar sensation Sonny Landreth, and bluesman Corey Harris.
"In the Middle of It All", by Arthur Alexander gives us the first example of how powerful and loving this CD will be. "The love I gave was really, really real"
"Flowers", is a song about the consequences of drunk driving. This has a low country feel... "Look., look, lookin' for the Flowers".
"I Count the Tears" is an old song by Doc Pomus. A song to sing with.. "Na, Nah, Nah, Nah, late at night, I Count the Tears" simply sung with back -up singers.
"Make Me Down A Pallet On Your Floor" is an old standard that is overwhelmingly sad. "Where are all you good time friends of mine? Where are you when I only have a dime?" so fitting for post Katrina as we now know.
"I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel to Be Free"- Billy Taylor's old song is one of the most beautifully sung songs on this CD.. Old time Gospel. Stand up and sing..
"Say'em loud. Say'em clear, for the whole side world to hear".
"If You Knew How Much" love song for everyone. "If You Knew How Much I Love You, If you Knew What I was Thinkin'. You would Never Look My Way."
"Another Man Done Gone" Irma Thomas rewrote the lyrics of the old traditional song to reflect the events of Katrina. "Another storm done gone, the water is at the door, he couldn't stay no more."
"Til I Can't Take It Anymore" an old love song. "I'll be praying that you never let me go".
"These Honey Dos," was co-written with David Egan. The lyrics reflect the independence of Irma Thomas. "You're still in that chair, that is where you is. Do you want me or These Honey Dos".
"Another Lonely Heart" is a combination of soul and country. "While you kiss me in the dark, I am just Another Lonely Heart."
"Soul of a Man" is another traditional song. "Won't somebody tell me, Answer If You Can, What is the Soul of a Man?"
"Stone Survivor" country and low down, "I ain't no apologizer, I'm a Stone Survivor".
"Shelter In The Rain" the entire CD in one song. "When you were down, I lifted you up from there".
Spare and longing, this CD is epitome of soulful New Orleans. Irma Thomas has given us a CD of memories and love, longing and forgiving, wanting and wistful. Filling us with the Faith that is needed for the people of New Orleans.
Highly Recommended. prisrob 7-01-06

This is going to be stuck in my CD player for a good long while. Lots of fun and these guys are GOOD! I just started taking boogie woogie piano after several years of classical so I can hear what they are doing and am just so impressed - I can't imagine playing this well. I like fast music and while some may say its showing off - I say 'if you got it flaunt it'!
The difficult thing with boogie is the timing - getting the right hand and left hand coordinated when they are hitting different timings and rhythms. I should say its difficult for me but these guys get it right - sooo right!
Clean recording and not a single track which I skip.

Slim Harpo recorded really good rhythm and blues. He never got too fancy; he never forgot the importance of the groove. He died young in 1970, but his music reached the Rolling Stones (who covered his "I'm a King Bee"), the Kinks (who sang his "I Got Love If You Want It"), Van Morrison, and Them (whose first single was Harpo's "Don't Start Crying Now"). A great cd, that will appeal to fans of blues, roots of rock'n'roll, swing, and rockabilly. Though Slim Harpo is a "blues" artist, his music would have been considered r&b back in the 50's, and now would be categorized as jump blues. A perfect beat for swing dancing, this music was big in jukeboxes at Juke Joints & roadhouses, across the USA in the 50's. There are a few chart hits that he had, and his popularity was immense.
A great cd, is the bottom line here.

Louisiana native Tab Benoit has been slinging his swamp-R&B-blues-rock concoction for the better part of 15 years, and from the sound of this disc's opening two tunes, it seems that little besides his backing band has changed. But when the title track kicks in with sorrowful fiddle, crying pedal steel (also played by Benoit), and a lovely, lonely honky-tonk melody, it's clear the singer/guitarist has decided to visit some unique territory. Country stalwarts Jim Lauderdale and Billy Joe Shaver swing by to provide duet vocals for Benoit's versions of their songs. Even Hank Williams Sr.'s "I Heard That Lonesome Whistle" gets covered as Benoit finds the blues at the heart of the country standard. Those who are not county lovers need not be concerned that Benoit has gone all George Jones on them. He still grinds out slabs of tough bayou rocking in the crackling "So High" and the opening "Pack It Up." There's also a heartbreaking, loungey, slow blues ("Somehow") and a soul-seared cover of Sam Cooke's "Bring It on Home to Me" that shows how effective Benoit is as an interpretive vocalist. The funky Little Feat/Neville Brothers-styled "Can't Do One More Two-Step" truly brings it home on a diverse outing that stretches boundaries and adds depth to Benoit's already impressive roots. --Hal HorowitzCustomer Reviews:

Telecaster-slinging South Louisiana native Tab Benoit is one of the brightest rising stars of contemporary blues. But he's stepped outside that promising career here, gathering a stellar ensemble of fellow New Orleans musicians (including N.O. legends Dr. John, Cyril Neville, Meters bass player George Porter, Jr., fellow bluesman Anders Osborne and fiddler Waylon Thibodeaux) to forge a musical plea about the fragile eco-system that is the increasingly depleted wetlands surrounding their hometown. But in the wake of the devastation wrought by Hurricane Katrina, the chorus of the otherwise savory, funk-charged opener "Bayou Breeze"--"Don't let the water wash us away"--now seems like a haunting, unheeded warning recorded eight months before disaster struck. Elsewhere, Dr. John injects some potent venom into "We Ain't Gonna Lose No More (Without a Fight)," taking to task an administration that's ignored the urgent needs of his homeland in favor of misadventure in Iraq. While songs like "Louisiana Sunshine" continue to focus largely on environmental concerns that grow more urgent with every tropical storm that gathers in the Gulf, it's also an album rife with New Orleans' cross-cultural musical joie de vivre, as witnessed by Benoit and Osborne's Cajun-seasoned "We Make a Good Gumbo" and the slinky African rhythms of Monk Boudreaux's "Me Donkey Want Water." Proceeds from the album's sales support a relief fund benefiting Louisiana victims of Katrina. --Jerry McCulleyAlbum Description
