Getting the two most personable voices in jazz to sing an hour's worth of George Gershwin's opera Porgy & Bess (Ella doing all the female parts, Satchmo all the male) was a good idea, but not quite as great as it sounded. Armstrong savors the down-and-dirty Charlestonisms that inspired the cadences of the music and lyrics, and they fit his happy rasp like an old shoe; Fitzgerald, conversely, sounds almost prissy every time she has to sing the word "ain't," though her melodic genius gets Gershwin's bold, supple tunes over. The arrangements are full-throttle Broadway, with a few leaps into Dixieland (including some fine Armstrong trumpet solos), but the disc works best when the vocalists break character and let their jazz side out. --Douglas Wolk

"Porgy and Bess" has just opened (with some controversy) in London's West End, though as a musical and not as an opera as it was originally conceived. Reviews have been promising and I aim to go down and see it soon. I decided to listen to this CD to put myself in the mood. I hadn't listened to it for years and I'd completely forgotten how good it actually is. Ella's voice blends with Louis' perfectly and Russell Garcia's orchestration gives them a dreamy landscape to perform against. I have one or two other CDs by Louis and Ella but this one is by far my favourite. The CD opens with "Overture" and its orchestral performance of classics like "Summertime", "I Wants To Stay Here", "I Got Plenty O' Nuttin'" and "It Ain't Neccessarily So" set the tone nicely, leaving one ever so keen for the vocal versions. Louis Armstong has a very rough tone to his voice but the emotion he packs with it is moving, most especially on the mournful "Bess, Oh Where's My Bess?" And we get all this and Louis' wonderful trumpet playing too?

Gershwin and Gershwin must be among the top composers of the last century and this opera showcases their talents more than anything I've heard. Ella and Louis are peerless as a vocal duo and though I doubt the West End performance will capture the magic in the same way they did, I still remain very keen to go see it. Is it opera or is it a jazz performance? I don't really know. I just know that I love it. And strongly recommend it.

Two thousand five hundred musicians have recorded "Summertime" --- it's a classic. (I bet most Americans can name Janis Joplin and no other singer.) As for "Porgy and Bess," the folk opera from which "Summertime" springs, it's such a classic that it's hard to believe anyone ever had a harsh word to say about it.

But after its premiere in 1935, no less than Duke Ellington said, "It has grand music and a swell play, but the two didn't go together. It does not use the Negro musical idiom --- the times are here to debunk Gershwin's lampblack Negroisms."

A quarter of a century later, the producers of the film version had trouble assembling a cast. Harry Belafonte rejected their offer to play Porgy. Sidney Poitier took the part --- and wished he hadn't. Poitier later wrote that the movie insulted black people; when he chose clips of his best performances for his tribute at the American Film Institute, he picked nothing from "Porgy and Bess."

And in 1985, when Grace Bumbry was a sensation as Bess in a Metropolitan Opera production, she slammed the opera: "I thought it beneath me, I felt I had worked far too hard, that we had come far too far to have to retrogress to 1935."

All that may be. All I know is that I have, in a long life, rarely been confronted with more genius than in the Fitzgerald/Armstrong recording of "Porgy & Bess." Set aside the achievement of George and Ira Gershwin in transforming DuBose Heyward's novel into a folk opera. Let's just focus on Armstrong and Fitzgerald, who were at the peak of their popularity when this record was made in 1957.

"Summertime" --- the first song --- sets the tone. A baleful horn figure, then violins. And then Armstrong's trumpet: slow, steady, dignified. But wait --- here comes a slurred note. And a cool little improvisation. Just enough of each. Very tasty.

Fitzgerald sings a verse. She is cool and formal. A lady. Not to be taken lightly. Now it's Armstrong's turn. Tender, but let's not kid ourselves --- this is not singing as others define it. This is melodic speech: rough, gutteral. And thus he is ideally cast: His Porgy may have his charms, but he'll have to stretch to keep Bess.

And so it goes throughout the CD. Trumpet mastery --- Armstrong has dazzling control. His tone is bright, but never shrill; there's a warmth in his playing no one else could produce. And Fitzgerald is just a study in inevitability; to hear her is to wonder how anyone could sing these songs any other way.

The queen of the jazz vocal.

There are no-brainers, and then there is this Ella Fitzgerald-Louis Armstrong collaboration --- music that imprints on your soul.

The fusion between the great two voices and the orchestra is just brilliant. Very good brass and violins that accompany Fitzeralds and Armstrongs magic voices leaves you with your mouth open.

Yes, if you know the story about Emma,it'll bring you to your knees. This album paints a picture of a very thoughtful man,with deep and honest emotions,but with the facade of goofy and humorous as a cover. This is a must have classic album for all the right reasons. This is music for mature musical tastes. Great production,a multi-track work of art,for sure.
side note-In the credits on the album were the names Keith and Jean Bristow. I worked for them for a time at a skatepark in 1978 and they brought this and a new copy of "but...seriously,folks" to the park and turned us sk8 punks on. They had vacation homes side by side with Joe and had some great stories/pics to share.
Buy this... and get a piece of rock and roll indulgence.

I was just tak'in a look see at what is still available from J.W. And felt compeled to write a little. this L.P. brings back such great memories partying in H.S. I got (the L.P.)it from Columbia house! It was the Months feature L.P. and I failed to tell them not to send it!!! imagine that. I wasn't even crazy about it when I first got it! I was young Freshman Yr., to young to (at first) understand the depth of feelings in this L.P. A Few years later I got it... and it STILL hits me with a solid Rock injection whenever I plug it in today! Its' plenty hard enough and yet is not afraid to have a soft side that I don't find cheesy at ALL! Emotionally/Musically/Soulfully I would put this on par with BAD Companies 1st L.P.) very different bands to be sure but energectically seem to be both in parody, I feel the exact same way about the B.C. L.P. today as well. Albeit J.Walsh can't sing as well (as B.Co.) it doesn't hold back the music or message.

GET THIS L.P. if it is the ONLY ONE you ever get! Then after that I would recommend "The Smoker you drink the player you get" which came out the year before in 73' after that I would say get "But seriouly folks" I see that several other good ones are only available for the big bucks now so don't delay! Anything else I could say has been said and broken down more throughly in other's comments than I need to re-cover.

Most fans agree that Walsh's true peak was in the 70's, and this is an excellent snapshot of him in top form. Much like 'The Smoker You Drink, the Player You Get', this album falls under the category of rock but is a collection of quite a few genres.
The album opener, "Welcome to the Club," shows his excellent musicianship; instead of trying to ignite the fretboard every single second and clog a song with so-called 'talent,' his skill lies in knowing when to let loose and when to lay back. After a crashing opening, the song gradually unfolds, with the standard wise-ass Walsh wit, and solos that fit perfectly, neither too flashy nor too dull, and uniformly great. Other highlights include the (mostly-)acoustic half-ballad "Help Me Through The Night" (I say half because most ballads don't end with someone blowing a raspberry at the end), the spacy "County Fair" with a well-crafted backward solo through the middle (where other artists used this to make a mediocre solo better, Walsh made it into an artform of its own), and "Time Out", the counterpart to the opening track, with great slide-work and an attention to detail most blues-based rockers didn't have (for instance, the layers of guitars during solos), as well as the classic smart-ass lyrics Joe's known for ("The maids were in the hallway, bangin' on the door/Askin' what the funny smell was,/Wake you up to tell you 'It's okay to sleep some more! By the way, is there any you can sell us?"). In fact, most of the album is a highlight--"Falling Down" and "Song for Emma" show Walsh's softer, sadder side--but with no less songwriting skill or style. And for those who like his oddball sense of humour, there's "All Night Laundromat Blues," which, he attests, was written in college at a laundromat, waiting for his clothes to dry.There's a reworking of "Turn to Stone" here, too; it's much less ragged and fiery and much more refined than the one off 'Barnstorm'--personally, I prefer the original, but some like the smoother, less-grungy sound. Also included is a version of Maurice Ravel's "Pavanne (De La Belle Au Bois Dormant)" on the ARP synthesizer.

I'd really rate this 4.5 stars--it didn't break new territory or create a genre unto its own, but it's a should-own for any classic-rock fans, and a great place to start if you're looking to get into some of Joe Walsh's music.

(I'd say listening to this brought me back to my college days...but I'm 19 and I'm still in college.)

I echo Michael J. Muscato's comments. No Joe Walsh fan should be without this album, and if you've not heard any of this after all these years, you've missed out on some truly great work. I have owned this album -- yes on vinyl -- since back in the day when it came out. I have since upgraded to the CD. It is a great album to just sit back and listen to and enjoy.

Emma was killed in a car accident involving a drunk driver, while her mom was driving her to preschool...a gorgeous, moving piece about the beauties/incomprehensibilities in life. The heavenly choir and prayer-like lyrics had always haunted me, but I never knew the backstory, and then I heard Joe HIMSELF on a radio show recount the story...how he and his wife spent the following year seated on the floor in an embrace, crying for Emma...
it's a beautiful tribute capping a strong effort by J.W.

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.

The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).

This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.

I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.

I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.

Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

    The album between the two Megadeth's biggest classics "Peace Sells..." and "Rust in Peace" can't be that bad...or can it? Well, at least the intro is quite good and "Set the World Afire" is one of their heaviest songs..."No survivors...set the world afire..."...one of their best songs at least lyrically. "Anarchy in UK" is the cover from Sex Pistols. I like Megadeth's version more...maybe because I like more Dave Mustaine's voice. "Mary Jane" and "In My Darkest Hour" are both quite sad songs lyrically and musically. "In My Darkest Hour" is a popular live track too. "Mary Jane" was released as a single like "Anarchy in UK" was too. "502" and "Liar" are quite fast songs too. "Hook in Mouth" is my favourite..it has the lyrics against the goverment and it is kinda rebellious and violent. "F is for fighting, R is for red..." FREEDOM is an important thing and there's never too many songs about it. I would say that ideas of the songs are excellent and the quality is awesome! Megadeth rocks!

    So Far, So Good...So What! has been drastically improved upon since the original had a slightly dissapointing low production, on this re-mastered version the sound quality is very high. Anyway this album is considered a dissapointing followup to Peace Sells among Megadeth fans which I personaly don't understand since this album was excellent and quite good with great aggresive and highly thrashing songs I don't see why anyone would be upset with this. This is still a definitive album from Megadeth, the lineup was changed for some reason it seemed like guitarist Chris Polland and drummer Gar Samuelson were both fired and replaced by Jeff Young and Chuck Behler and it also seemed like Mustain was going through alot of drug problems that effected the writting of this album especially with the silly lyrics for 502 even though it wasn't really a bad song. There are very few flaws in this album but I still consider this to be an underrated masterpiece the album starts of with the brilliant instrumental song Into the lungs of hell with a loud explosion sound effect then the song Set the world afire which is a technicaly fast and speedy track and is one of my favorites, its the first song Dave Mustain wrote after he was kicked out of Metallica. Anarchy in the U.K. is the only bad song on this album and the one that I thought was a dissapointing cover of the original done by The Sex Pistols, it almost ruins the flow and continuity of the album then theres the song called Mary Jane which has a very nice melody to it and the riffs were terrific its very catchy and you would probably know what this songs about from the title.

    502 wasn't so bad except for the silly lyrics about a high speed chase with a bunch of cops but the following song In my darkest hour is probably the highlight of this album and is one of the greatest Megadeth songs ever, a song inspired by the tragic death of his friend and fellow Metallica bandmate Cliff Burton and presented here with an improved accoustic intro I would describe this song as a ballad that increases with speed and then becomes more intense towards the end which is amazing then theres the song called Liar another good track which seems to be an attack towards a former member of Megadeth (I think its maybe towards Chris Poland I'm not so sure). The closing song Hook in mouth was an incendiary assualt on the PMRC at the time and an overall attack on censorship in the media, but then again who cares since its a great thrash song. If you ask any Megadeth fan and they will tell that this album has some of the best songs Megadeth ever recorded despite all of the problems Dave was going through you he still managed to pull of this great masterpiece of thrash metal, you cannot call yourself a true Megadeth fan without owning this album.

    So Far So good, but not their best, Being 8 tracks long this album still spawned classic megadeth tracks such as Set the world afire and in my darkest hour. The former being Mustaine's first composition after leaving metallica, was done with the intent of being faster and harder than his former band could achieve, and also gave rise to the band's name. The opening track (into the lungs of hell) is also killer, and is fashioned after the poem 'the charge of the light brigade' which is work based on St. Michael's offensive on hell after lucifer's exile from heaven. Other notable tracks include Mary Jane, Anarchy in The UK (a sex pistols cover), and Hook In Mouth which is a catchy tune aimed at music censorship.

    So Far, So Good...So What! (in it's origional form) used to conjure feeling. The remastered edition sounds like a group of studio musicians tried to remake the album and just didn't quite hit the nail on the head. If you bought this album on cassette when it came out in the late 80s, get your hands on that version.

    3 out of 5 stars An inconsistent album that contains some Megadeth classics. But it's only half a great album........2006-10-08

    This album has split fans for nearly 20 years. There are some out there that claim this as their favourite Megadeth release. Then there are those that see it as a blemish on the band's record, a separator between two undoubtedly classic albums in "Peace Sells...But Who's Buying?" and "Rust in Peace". So where do I stand? I'm going to be ultra boring and sit on the fence.

    While "So Far So Good...So What?" in my opinion is not as good as either of the other two aforementioned albums, it certainly has some value for any thrash fan. The problem with the album is a lack of consistency. Things start out tremendously promising with the instrumental "Into the Lungs of Hell" kicking things off in fine style. Straight away, it's obvious that the musicianship is still of the highest quality even if the production is slightly lacking. "Set the World Afire" continues the good work, its shredding riffs making up for rather pedestrian drumming by newcomer Chuck Behler.

    But here's where the problem starts. Just as on the previous two albums, the band recorded a cover version of a celebrated track. I really do feel that in each case ("These Boots" may be an exception but only just) the cover songs are the tracks that I dislike the most on each release. This time around, Megadeth recorded a version of the Sex Pistols "Anarchy in the UK". It's completely out of place and in particular as track 3 on the album. Some fans claim to like this cover but most criticise its existence in general, its punk attitude not sitting well alongside some of the more sophisticated tracks.

    Yet the inconsistencies don't end there. "Mary Jane" is another brilliant track with it's ballad like qualities and fantastic lead guitar making it one of the highlights of the album. But then it's followed by the truly atrocious "502" which once again stalls the flow of the album. I'm sure the guys thought it was funny writing this track based on speeding in cars and avoiding the cops, but its silliness wears thin awfully quickly and I find it very hard to enjoy these days. And so the album runs on with a few great moments broken up by bad decisions and a few cringe-worthy songs.

    I don't hate "So Far So Good...So What?" as a whole, but I do find it really difficult to enjoy about half of it. Whereas the album before it and even more so the one after it are filled to the brim with talent and quality, this one ends up being comparatively average.

    I must add, to the praises above, that Kathleen Battle's "Lord, How Come Me Here" is the best "quick" explanation of the long-lasting effects of slavery that I can think of. The line, "They sold my children away," says it all.

    And the VERY funny "Scandelize My Name" is also worth the price of the total album!

    Clearly you are mistaken. I don't know who that guy is-the person below recommended-but there is NO COMPARISON to JESSYE NORMAN AND KATHLEEN BATTLE!!!! Jessye Norman herself has *30* HONARY DOCTRATES from places like Harvard, Juliard, Yale, Cambridge....I mean HELLO!!!! That guy had no where near the ease, the musicality or even the breath support as these two veterans show!! It is a beautiful CD though it came out in 1991 and I HIGHLY recommend it.

    I'm going to be the dissenting voice here: thank goodness I signed this disk out of the public library 'cause I'm sure not going to listen to it twice.

    There is nothing wrong with the performances. Jessye Norman and Kathleen Battle sing beautifully, and there's no problem with the pick-up orchestra under James Levine.

    The problem, and it's huge, is the conception of the show and the musical arrangements. To make the video marketable, I suppose, the producers decided that the concert had to be big: big names, big arrangements, big effects. So we have eighteen spirituals given the musical theatre treatment, with a philharmonic chorus providing chain-gang sound effects, big brass, and big percussion -- including a chinese gong. A chinese gong in a spiritual??? Spare me! Almost every track turns out sounding like either a curtain-raiser or a big, end-of-act production number with cute and predictable modulations between some of the stanzas and the sort of curly-cue orchestral ornamentation typical of Broadway shows.

    And you know what? It all kills the spirituals stone dead. The spiritual is one of those musical forms where less is more and very little is best of all. That's how they started, after all. That's how and why they worked for their original audiences, and that's why they were powerful enough to make the transition from folk song to art song. If you want to hear Battle sing spirituals that are irresistible, listen to the set on her Salzburg recital CD, also with Levine (ASIN B00000E31B). There, the music speaks for itself and speaks with a strength and a beauty that the tracks on this disk never approach.

    "I am here," said Leontyne Price when interviewed as she opened the new Metropolitan Opera with Samuel Barber's underrated ANTONY AND CLEOPATRA, "and you will know that I am the best and will hear me. The color of my skin or the kink of my hair or the spread of my mouth has nothing to do with what you are listening to." Back in the 1960s Price was one of the greatest divas in all of opera, and it wasn't just her voice but her magnificent stage presence, combined with her social activism. All of the above come into play in this collection of secular songs and ditties, some of them traditional plantation chanties and others, art songs and a scattering of pop music. And some of them, like Gershwin's "Summertime," cross the ever-permeable boundaries between Broadway and classical. These recordings were made at different times in Price's career, and her voice, while always angelic, has different shadings and reaches a different range of timbre in each separate recording date, but there is no question that, as time goes by, she is able to impart a richness of life experience noticeably absent from some of her earlier work.

    "Ave Maria" sounds heavenly no matter which way you slice it, and as for "I Wonder As I Wander," it brings tears to your eyes. If you have a heart that's beating you will be moved by this rendition. "Ein feste Burg" is pretty strong, but Price seems more comfortable with the traditional spirituals, though perhaps it is the slightly off-kilter sounds of the Ambrosian Singers (what a name) who back her up on many of these tracks, that detract slightly from the experience. Compare "Lead Kindly Light" for a clear sense of what constitutes authority vs. what is a wee bit overproduced. If you had this compilation, and perhaps one of Leontyne Price's Christmas albums, you could attain nirvana any time you wanted to, just flip a switch and close your eyes, let her lift you up on wings of song.

    Leontyne Price (still alive) and already passing into immortality amongst vocal artists, both classical and popular. Leontyne Price stands at the pinnacle of her classical art, but those who only know her work in La Forza del destino or the Verdi Requiem are in for a heart rending treat with this album where Leontyne Price goes home to her roots in Mississippi and gives an unabashed account of the classic spirituals she sang as a young woman. Like John Mc Cormacks rendering of Irish songs there is a personal longing and devotion expressed here that reveals a side of the artist not known in the bulk of their "classical" repetoire. A sense of going home like Citizen Kane's rosebud, or as Dorothy Gale observes at the end of the Wizard of Oz "everything I could ever have wanted was right in my own backyard "

    IMMACULATE, SUPERB vocal range and style! There's no other words that can complement Miss Leontyne Price's vocal arrangements. Miss Price's voice is strong, and shrills very nicely to the instruments played on many songs listed on this double CD which is a joy to treasure; every song listed are songs I was raised to hearing and singing. Miss Price is the reason why many of these songs remain in popularity and presently used. Miss Leontyne Price has been incredible in many of her past performances.     This is a great CD. The only problem I have with it is that on some of the selections there is a boy's choir screaming in the background, and this takes away (a bit) from her performance. That said, her best selections are those that are either unaccompanied or those where her voice is not buried. Songs that strike me are - His Name So Sweet, He's Got The Whole World, Were You There, I Wonder as I Wander, Lift Every Voice and Sing, and my all time favourite Summertime. Enough said.

They most definitely are when Terfel surrounds them with his resonant baritone. Every phrase of Rodgers and Hammerstein's music is imbued with uncommon sensitivity, impeccable phrasing, and dazzling beauty. Terfel's rich and meaty voice shares a plate with delicate pianissimos, unabashed sentimentality, and swaggering forthrightness. He successfully tackles songs originally written for women. In "It Might as Well Be Spring," he transforms dippy into dapper. And he turns "Bali Hai" into a foreboding, demanding, and seductive call; the listener must helplessly succumb to the world of his sensitive manliness. His interpretations of the old standards--"If I Loved You," "Soliloquy," "This Nearly Was Mine," "Some Enchanted Evening"--are stellar. Despite the temporary lulls caused by the second-class songs from "Allegro," Terfel does a first-class job of bringing them to life.
